BROWNSVILLE, Texas - Former state Sen. Eddie Lucioo, Jr., has not been able to give away as many turkeys to the less fortunate this year, in part because federal funding to the food banks has been cut.Normally, Lucio would purchase the turkeys at a competitive price from local food banks and distribute them to those in need in Cameron, Willacy, and Hidalgo counties. This year, however, the 25th year he has been doing it, he has had to pay for them from the large distributors at the normal price.And so, he has had to shrink the program to just giving away 400 turkeys and all within Cameron County alone. In an interview with Ron Whitlock Reports, Lucio explained how his Thanksgiving Turkey Day first started.“This is the 25th annual giveaway. We started off with with 10 or 20 turkeys and they mostly to the ladies that kind of hung around my campaign. Those that were really interested in community development. They were activists. And I told Brenda, my dear assistant who has actually worked for me for 36 years, to go out and buy some turkeys to give them.“And it started like that. But we continued to make it bigger and bigger until it got to hundreds of families that we were able to help.”Back then Lucio had campaign contributions to draw on to purchase the turkeys. But when he retired in 2023, the campaign contributions, naturally, dried up.“Back in the day I had money that was contributed to me, and I was glad to share it with the less fortunate that needed our help and support. But after January of 2023 I was no longer in public public service. But, fortunately, I still had some anonymous donors that that wanted to help, one in particular that I care not to mention. I said I would not divulge his name because he wanted to keep it private.”Lucio said he gave away one thousand turkeys last year. This year, he has had to shrink it to 400.“These big, multi-billion dollar corporations, they don't give you any discounts. They're there to make money. That's the name of the game for them. I don't want to be too critical but when it comes to helping the less fortunate and those that that need help, I think all of us should dig in a little bit and share a little bit of the wealth and share a little bit of our resources so that they, too, can have a sit down dinner with with their families, and enjoy the day and thank God for all the blessings.”Lucio said he is particularly disappointed he could give out turkeys in Willacy and Hidalgo counties, as in previous years.“I used to do the three counties because I had enough turkeys. Hidalgo, Willacy and Cameron. But this year, there are very few turkeys, 600 less. It means I couldn't cross the county line to Hidalgo and Willacy, and it hurts me. It pains my heart not to be able to help because of lack of funds and the lack of resources that we need.”Lucio says he has a plan to arrest the slide, to give away more turkeys next year.“I have a plan. I want to make sure we have the funds necessary. So I'm going to do a big (golf) tournament and call it a Turkey Tournament. Sometime in May or June of next year. The event, part of their annual Friendsgiving, kicks off after the 11:15 a.m. service at 5744 Bells Ferry Road. While attending the service isn’t required, it guarantees you’ll snag a turkey and groceries—one per family, first come, first served. STORY 2: Woodstock joins Cherokee Regional Land Bank Authority Woodstock has officially joined the Cherokee Regional Land Bank Authority, following a unanimous vote by the city council on Nov. 17. A land bank, for those unfamiliar, is a tool to redevelop abandoned or blighted properties—no eminent domain involved. It can accept property donations, acquire land, and work with nonprofits or private groups to create affordable housing or boost economic development. Cherokee County and Canton formed the authority in August, and now Woodstock is on board. Holly Springs is still considering joining, with a decision expected next month. The land bank’s board includes representatives from each member jurisdiction, plus appointees from the Cherokee Office of Economic Development and at-large members. Woodstock will appoint its representative in December. Board meetings will be public, and jurisdictions will get advance notice of any property acquisitions. STORY 3: Lawmakers consider paring tax credits and exemptions to offset income tax cuts Georgia lawmakers are seriously talking about ditching the state income tax—$16 billion worth of revenue—and replacing it by slashing $30 billion in tax credits and exemptions. Bold move, right? “It’s not if, it’s when,” said Sen. Blake Tillery, who’s leading the charge. “This is about staying competitive.” Supporters like economist Arthur Laffer called income taxes “growth killers” and praised states like Tennessee for ditching them. But critics, like Sen. Nan Orrock, warned that sales taxes—often the fallback—hit low-income folks and retirees hardest. The debate? Far from over. Stay tuned. Break: Ingles Markets 3 STORY 4: Warriors withstand late rally, knock off Knights  Even with a few key players sidelined, Cherokee stayed unbeaten Tuesday night, grinding out a 65-46 win over River Ridge. But don’t let the final score fool you—this one got tight late. Cherokee (2-0), missing standout forward Sean Hamilton, saw a 20-point fourth-quarter lead shrink to 10 with just over two minutes left. But the Warriors clamped down defensively, holding River Ridge to one basket the rest of the way. “We started strong, but we’ve got to play a full game,” said Cherokee coach Joe Veihman. “We got sloppy in the second half—missed chances, gave them open looks. Still, we’re learning.” River Ridge (1-1), led by new coach LeRonnice Davis, showed fight despite the loss. “The little things killed us—rebounds, free throws, turnovers,” Davis said. “But we battled. These games will make us better.” Braylon Luster poured in 30 points for Cherokee, while Brandon Flint led River Ridge with 27, including six threes. Next up: Cherokee heads to Creekview and River Ridge visits Etowah. STORY 5: 2 sentenced for 3-hour Cherokee County armed SWAT standoff Two men are headed to prison after pleading guilty to charges stemming from a tense, hours-long armed standoff with law enforcement in Ball Ground back in 2021. Jeffrey Leighton Danner, 35, of Alabama, pleaded guilty but mentally ill to multiple charges, including aggravated assault on officers. He was sentenced to 50 years, with 20 behind bars. Kaleb Hunter Kirkland, 27, also from Alabama, pleaded guilty earlier this year and received the same sentence—though he’ll serve 25 years in confinement. It all started on Feb. 28, 2021, when police spotted a vehicle tied to violent crimes in Alabama. A chase ensued, ending in the woods. Shots were fired at officers (thankfully, no injuries), and SWAT was called in. Kirkland, armed with a rifle, was shot after ignoring commands, while Danner was arrested without incident. “These sentences hold them fully accountable,” said District Attorney Susan Treadaway, praising law enforcement’s bravery. Here's a question that'll drive you absolutely crazy: How do you sell professional services without giving away everything for free? That's the burning question from Laura and Adam, attorneys who are struggling with the classic professional services dilemma. Their intake team and attorneys want to showcase their expertise by giving away everything for free during sales conversations. Meanwhile, they're also trying to figure out what kind of salesperson they need to hire to sell high-value legal services effectively. If you're nodding your head right now, you're not alone. This is the most common trap I see professional service providers fall into, and it's bleeding them dry while their competitors who keep their mouths shut are crushing them in conversion rates. The Professor Problem: Why Being Smart Is Making You Broke Laura nailed it when she described their current approach as "professorial." They show their talents and knowledge, thinking, "How can they not want to hire us because we're so brilliant?" But here's the brutal, kick-you-in-the-gut truth: The more you teach on sales calls, the lower your closing ratio becomes. Period. No exceptions. The less information you give, the higher your closing ratio goes. This isn't just theory—it's what I've learned from years of training consultants and professional service providers. When practitioners get on sales calls, it's incredibly hard not to show all our cards or teach people during the conversation. But you're not running a free consultation. You're running a sales process. Why Information Is Your Leverage—Not Your Gift Here's what Laura and Adam's team needs to understand: Information is your leverage. Are you going to give your leverage away for free? The key is teaching your intake team how to ask questions and bring the person through a process. You're connecting with prospects, learning about them, getting them talking about their fears, helping them articulate what they want, and then building a quick value bridge to why they should sign with your firm. Then—and only then—do you ask for the commitment. When prospects start fishing for free legal advice, you shut it down fast with this exact response: "That's a really, really good question. And that's exactly why we need to get you booked with an attorney so that you can sit down with a professional who can walk you through that strategy. Let's go ahead and get you signed up." The High-Stakes Hire: What to Look for in Professional Services Salespeople When you're selling high-value services instead of products, you need a special type of salesperson. Here are the three make-or-break qualities that will determine whether your hire is a rockstar or a disaster: They Need to Be Street Smart - Not book-smart—street-smart. They need to think on their feet because you've got different types of people coming to you with different cases. If someone is used to just following a script, they're not the right person for you. High Emotional Intelligence with Outcome Drive - This is the tricky balance. They need high emotional intelligence to quickly connect with people and build relationships. But they also need enough outcome drive to ask for the commitment and not let people off the hook. You're essentially running a one-call close. A person comes in, you take them through the journey, and then you ask them to make a commitment. If they don't commit on that call, your chances of signing them as a client go down exponentially over time. The Goldilocks Zone - If you hire someone too far on the outcome-driven side, they'll be pushy schmucks who pressure people, strongarm prospects, and destroy your reputation. You'll end up with buyers' remorse and angry clients. If you hire someone too relationship-driven with too much empathy, they'll have great conversations and make wonderful friends—but they won't convert anybody into customers.
