After last fortnight's special 5th birthday show, I was back with another cracker of a guest mix for you, from Liverpool-based DJ and producer Ben Jamin. Ben's had releases on loads of labels including Discography Lessons, Discoholics Anonymous and Hot Digits, and is a real master of the slow mo edit. He's also a brilliant DJ, and has been kind enough to play some of my slower stuff in his mixes. His mix, of course, starts slow at a sub 100BPM simmer and gradually cranks up, moving through a variety of disco, soulful and worldy sounds. A very tasty mix! Mit diesem Sunday Joint nimmt euch unser Brudi Dubbin Flow, bekannt von und geliebt für die Welle One Love Radioshow, mit auf eine musikalische Reise nach Südamerika: Fast Jeder von uns hat diese Art von Musik, die ihn emotional tief berührt, obwohl sie eigentlich gar nicht ins Beuteschema passt. Ein kurzer Schwenk in meine eigene Biografie: Ich bin in den 90ern mit dem Techno und Grunge meines Bruders aufgewachsen, wurde in der Pubertät vom Punk und Hip-Hop meiner Skateboard-Buddies sozialisiert und entdeckte letztlich über ein Videospiel meine immerwährende Liebe zu Reggae und Dub, als ich etwa 15 war und erst danach meine Affinität zu Jungle, Drum&Bass und eigentlich allen Spielarten elektronischer Musik (Schranz, Gabber und Hardtekk jetzt mal ausgenommen). Ungeachtet dieses wilden Genre-Gulasch in meinem Leben hat mich die Musik der Anden und der Wälder Südamerikas immer bewegt, wenn sie mir begegnete. Der Einfluss der Harmonien dieser Landschaften erreichte im Laufe der Jahre bewohntere Teile des Kontinents und nicht zuletzt auch die Inseln, wurde befruchtet von neuen Instrumenten der Einwanderer, behielt aber stets seine Eigenständigkeit. Gerade die Obertonmusik der Anden ist nicht zwangsläufig 4/4-Takt-lastig. Rhythmische Verschiebungen geben dieser Musik einen Groove, der für ein mitteleuropäisches Weißbrot wie mich unwiderstehlich daherkommt. Mein Radio-Buddy Ronny kam vor einer Sendung im Jahr 2015 mit einer neuen Schallplatte um die Ecke. Es handelte sich um prender el alma von Nicola Cruz, dem hier ein wahrlich großer Wurf gelingt. Cruz packt sich die traditionelle Musik der Anden und gibt ihr einen tiefen, klischeefreien elektronischen Schub, der seinesgleichen sucht. Es war absolut unmöglich für mich, mich dieser Musik zu entziehen. Drei Jahre später sammelten sich auf meiner Festplatte einige Produzenten, die ganz ähnliche Wege gehen: Der Groove und die Harmonien der Anden und die Tiefe eines 100BPM schnellen 4-to-the-floor, Flöten, Gitarren und analoge Synthesizer, teils verschobene Grooves und unendlich viel Liebe. Wenn ihr nur halb so viel Freude an dieser Musik verspürt, wie ich selbst, dann haben wir alle gewonnen. Nehmt diese Sonntags-Jolle, sie ist mit dem Herzen gekurbelt worden. Twenty-three year old music producer, Ryan Meblin, has been tearing down the walls surrounding conventional bass music since early 2008, when he and a former bandmate formed the internationally recognized dubstep duo known as NTRLD. From 2008-2010, the two continued to produce chart-topping singles and official remixes for major label artists including Far East Movement (Interscope), Dev (Universal), and Major Lazer (Downtown/Mad Decent). Following the split of NTRLD, Meblin adopted a new moniker, Carrier, and began to reinvent himself as an eclectic producer with a long career ahead of him. With his first official remix of Dev's hit single "Bass Down Low" hitting the blogosphere at an unexpected 100BPM, fans of Carrier's early work knew immediately that his sound was evolving. Later that month, he released his official drumstep remix of Vaski's "Spaceman" alongside Dillon Francis and Total Recall on Play Me Too Records. Within a week, Carrier's drumstep remix rose to #12 on Beatport's drum and bass chart. Less than one year later, Carrier now has a handful of releases under his belt, and two forthcoming EPs coming out in late 2011. He has consistently given away material to his fans for free via the internet, and never intends to stop rewarding them for their incredible support. In less than four years of DJing professionally, Carrier has been blessed enough to share the stage with some of bass music's biggest legends, including Noisia, Andy C, Goldie, Subfocus, N-Type, Bassnectar, Freq Nasty, Nadastrom, Antiserum, SPL, Ill Gates, Borgore, 12th Planet, Sluggo, J. Rabbit, 6Blocc, and Reid Speed. Carrier's performances have been known to hit dancefloors hard when they least expect it, seamlessly segueing through different genres and BPMs. His influences span from the broken beats and thick basslines of drum and bass and dubstep, to the dancefloor-smashing rhythms and synth lines of moombahton and tropical bass, all finely blended together with a dash of electro flavor to spice things up a bit.
