In this Convo of Flanigan's Eco-Logic, Ted speaks with Dr. Jennifer Bousselot, Assistant Professor at Colorado State University (CSU) in the Department of Horticulture and Landscape Architecture. Jennifer is exploring new and innovative ways to improve the productivity and aesthetics of modern urban spaces by harnessing the twin powers of the sun and plantlife. She specializes and is a leading expert in green roof research on native species evaluations, plant drought tolerance, integration with solar panels, and rooftop agrivoltaics. Jennifer shares a bit about her background, growing up on a 360-acre farm in Iowa, and was the youngest of 8 kids. She and her twin sister worked on the farm, and carried their deep farming roots into their careers. She earned her undergraduate and master's degrees at Iowa State University, and after a stint as a horticulture agent for the CSU Extension office in Douglas County, she followed her passion and pursued a doctorate of science in horticulture at CSU.Jennifer shares details on her green roofs project for her doctoral thesis, highlighting how she came upon rooftop agrovoltaics as a happy accident, finding there was a great synergy between the plants and solar panels; the plants grew better, and the solar performed better because of the plants' cooling effect. With a roster of graduate students and researchers, her team is pushing the boundaries of horticultural science with numerous pieces of published research and scientific discovery every year. She goes into the history of green roofs, and discusses her research on rooftop agrivoltaics and its benefits, including enhanced food production and security, improving clean energy pathways, and exploring sustainability integrations.

Hope Church Sunday Podcast

Just like a seed that must be buried to grow, our lives are meant to be planted by God. This Sunday, Drew Williams reminded us that being planted often means taking up our cross and letting go of our own desires. It can feel uncomfortable or even painful, as we surrender to what God wants for us. But it's in this “burial” that we begin to find new life and purpose. This isn't just a one-time choice; it's an invitation to embrace a lifelong journey of following Christ and discovering the fruit He intends for us. Recorded at Hope Church in Springfield, MO.

I've noticed how food content on social media has started to veer towards viral food combinations…but making a cake out of mushed up oreos or wraps out of cottage cheese isn't exactly what you want for dinner.   Creating reliable and exciting plant-based recipes that you'll use again and again takes a lot of skill and a lot of passion. So I am so excited to be talking with Nisha Vora, the lawyer turned YouTube and food blog sensation behind Rainbow Plant Life, who has an incredible new cookbook out called Big Vegan Flavour. I got to sit down with Nisha to talk about her new book as well as her life as a content creator - which is not always what people imagine it to be. Nisha shares more about why she chose to leave law for a career in food as well as a bit about her creative process and how she navigates the never ending cycle of content creation. Welcome to the Monthly Music Challenge podcast with Cosmic Bos, this is episode 2.6 Plantlife, and Nick and Andy are back! After being AWOL for several months, Professor Briiiiiiiiiiiian Cox found them in a small room just by the control room. It will all make sense when you listen to it. Come on a musical adventure with your hosts Cosmic Bos as we delve into the wonderful world of Plant themed music, containing some truly exceptional music by some of the greatest indie artists working today. Congratulations to John Serrano and James Slattery for winning the People's Choice Award for their Funky song 'Adrenaline Fire' from episode 2.5 Funk Drunk Love. SPOILER ALERT! This will be the final episode of the Monthly Music Challenge for the forseeable future, as you might have been able to guess, running the MMC has been a pretty tough job for Nick and Andy, and they need to bring it to a close early so they can focus on the difficult task of being alive. A massive thank you to everyone that has supported us over this year with the making of the podcast, it has been a labour of love (as we make no money from it) and time has unfortunatly slipped through our fingers and we need to change course in order to keep our sanity. Although judging by this episode we may not have had any sanity to begin with. Set list for this episode in order (much to Big Mic's dismay) 1. Cosmic Bos ft. Joe Philogene and Dayne Howcroft - Earth's Children 2. John Serrano - El Bosque 3. Colin Pimlott - The Garden Widower 4. A Sea Warren - Plant Life 5. Between Daze - I Might 6. Andrew Hartshorn - Thriving in the Wilderness 7. Hellwaddler - Planting Pot Plants Plotting Top Plans 8. John Serrano - Queen of the Forest You can pick up Cosmic Bos's song 'Earth's Children' on the album MMC1 (2023) from bandcamp https://cosmicbos.bandcamp.com/album/mmc-1-2023-album and you can get it on CD if you like physical media. It can also be heard on all good streaming sites, and many of the bad ones too. You can also pick up the song 'Queen of the Forest' by John Serrano on his amazing album 'Alive' https://johnserrano.bandcamp.com/album/alive-lp which is coming out on Monochorme Motif records on the 6th September We won't be running a people's choice award for this episode as there are so few songs to choose from, instead we are giving Big Mic choice awards to everyone that sent in a song, congratulations to John Serrano, Colin Pimlott, A Sea Warren, Between Daze, Andrew Hartshorn and Hellwaddler, you are all winners.  Thanks again for all the support, the podcast will be back next month with something a little different, and we will do a best of/awards thing in December to cap off the year and tie in to the release of our album. So, this episode was meant to be out back on the 1st of June, but Nick and Andy from Cosmic Bos went AWOL so it was left up to me, Big Mic! to pull it all together so that you wonderful listeners and musician subs could hear it. Oh, it's Big Mic by the way, I've had to step in and start running the MMC Challenger, I have enlisted David Battenberg Cake and the Sexy German to go and press the buttons (not RUB the buttons as SG seems prone to doing) so that this episode made it off of the interdimensional Rocket Submarine Train and into your podcast feed. This is Episode 2.5 - Funk Drunk Love, co-curated with the one and only Uncle Funkbeard (go follow the majestic Funkle on X, and check out the Only The Host YouTube Channel to see all of the funky goings on) and it features 14 of the funkiest, drunkiest and loveiest songs on the whole of the interweb, created by a handful of the greatest indie musicians working today. The opening song is by Cosmic Bos themselves, they managed to finish up their song before they dissapeared from the MMC Challenger, the song is called 'Drunk on Your Love' and can be purchased from bandcamp here https://cosmicbos.bandcamp.com/track/drunk-on-your-love-feel-that-funky-heart-beating please consider giving them some money, that might actually get them back from wherever it is that they have gone AWOL to. They also made a nice little video to go with it, which you can watch and comment on here - https://youtu.be/wQnXo4jZdOI?si=HgQRFXqoj42G7hEj  I, Big Mic, have done all that I can to try and keep the format the same as what the Bos boys would do, not sure why I bothered, I could have done whatever I like because I'm Big Mic! But for the sake of all you listeners and submitters I've tried to keep it as close to the same as possible. It wasn't easy, have you ever tried to control a Cake and a sexy German while running a human circus in an engine room with a load of Midgets in sexy costumes while having to put up with Professor Briiiiiiiiiiian Cox and a future version of yourself that controls the universe in the future? Didn't think so. Format the same as usual, so we had the Peoples Choice Award winners from the previous episode, 2.4 Animals, and there were 3 of them! So big shout out to Natalie Williams Calhoun (NWC), Tonal Drift (TD) and A Sea Warren (Al or Owl), you all won a People Choice Award for your excellent Animals based songs, really good they were. You can vote in the Peoples Choice Award for this episode right here on this link (Insert link here) As we aren't sure where Nick and Andy are, I, Big Mic, decided we would give you all a bit longer to complete the next challenge, so you have till the 30th August to get your 2.6 songs into the Bos boys. Send your mp3's and a little Bio and write up to cosmicbos@gmail.com to be included in the next episode. The theme is Plantlife, 2.6 - Plantlife. It's a bit like parklife by Bluh but more Plant based. So, yeah get on with it! Once again, big shout out to Uncle Funkbeard for all he did for this episode, utter legend!  Here is the list of songs that go with this episode, in my, Big Mic's Big Number Order, so you can't cheat and skip through to a particular song, you have to listen to the whole thing! 1. Cosmic Bos - Drunk On Your Love (Feel That Funky Heart Beating) 2. Uncle Funkbeard - FOOL 3. A Sea Warren - Funk Drunk Love 4. Colin Pimlott - Funky Drunk Kind of Love 5. TruckDog & the Go People - Fulfill the Need 6. Andrew Hartshorn - Who Brings the Funk to Your Life 7. Taylor Lidstone - Barsnacks 8. John Serrano and James Slattery - Adrenaline Fire 9. On May 30, 2024, JP, along with two military colleagues, were taken to a biodome in an unknown location. They traveled there via a large military base in Florida, which had a garage-sized white room with a portal doorway into the biodome. JP and his companions were first given a substance to drink that made them more alert and relaxed before entering the white room, which began vibrating. Once inside the dome, JP, along with a botanist and another soldier, traveled through the dome sampling different fruits and observing the plants, some of which could move like Venus fly traps to catch small prey. JP believed the biodome was located off-planet, possibly under the Moon.  The biodome was very similar to one JP traveled to on October 19, 2015, prior to joining the US Army. In this episode of Someone Lived Here, Kendra brings you to the Hulda Klager Lilac Gardens in Woodland, Washington. The home was built by Hulda's family, The Thiel's in 1889. Hulda Klager would purchase the home and move in in her 40s.She became interested in the work of Luther Burbank, a horticulturist and hybridized. She had been inspired by the book New Creations in Plant Life by William Sumner Harwood, which detailed Luther Burbanks process. Hulda Klager began her own experiments with hybridization: first with apples, then lilacs. Behind the house is a large garden filled with lilacs, many of which were Hulda's creations. This episode wouldn't be possible without the Hulda Klager Lilac Garden. Mari Ripp, the executive director, made this whole recording possible. Judy Card, Debbie Elliott, Barbara Harlan, and Mari Ripp guided us through the home and property. The historic talk was put on by the Hulda Klager Lilac Garden, the Woodland Historical Museum, and the Lelooska Foundation. It was moderated by Erin Thoeny and recorded by Keith Bellisle. Thank you to Mary Jo Kellar, Fran and Kirk Northcut, and Jon Drury for their stories.Images from the day of the interview were taken by Ada Horne. Tim Cahill created our music. Hello and welcome to this week's episode where my guest is Mark Schofield, Plantlife's Road Verge Advisor for the UK. Mark has a huge amount of experience when it comes to green space conservation and is currently involved in a number of projects across the country to manage road verges better for wildlife involving biomass harvesting trials and the use of AI in surveys. He's also one of Plantlife's representatives for the #NoMowMay campaign, and in this interview, he talks about how we can maintain both private and public green spaces more sympathetically for wildflowers and the wildlife they support. About Mark Schofield Mark used to work for the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust before he joined Plantlife as their Road Verge Advisor for the UK. He has 15 years of experience of road verge and urban green space conservation and has organised extensive citizen science surveys. He is currently involved in a number of projects across the country to manage road verges better for wildlife involving biomass harvesting trials and the use of AI in surveys. Mark is also one of Plantlife's representatives for the #NoMowMay campaign, and has written much of the guidance on the Plantlife website for how we can maintain our lawns and public green spaces more sympathetically for wildflowers and the wildlife they support.    Links No Mow May and lawn management guidance: https://www.plantlife.org.uk/campaigns/nomowmay/ https://www.plantlife.org.uk/advice-learning/managing-grassland/   Trends in green space management: Report from APSE with good news from local authorities for meadows and biodiversity priorities   Other episodes if you liked this one: Tapestry Lawns - This episode, I'm talking to Dr Lionel Smith, horticulture lecturer and author of the book Tapestry Lawns: Freed from Grass and Full of Flowers. As the title suggests, a tapestry lawn replaces grass with flowering dicots, increasing biodiversity, lowering maintenance needs and seriously upping the aesthetic value of a lawn. Living with a tapestry lawns involves a little bit of self-education around how you treat plants and I start by asking how to overcome one of my own biggest worries about having one…
Gardening for Your Senses - This week I'm chatting with writer Kendra Wilson. Kendra has written a vast amount about gardening but I was particularly interested in speaking to her about her book Garden for the Senses. Engaging all your senses can lead to a deeper connection with the landscape and it can be an unusual and transformative experience. I wanted to find out how we can all learn to better use our senses and firstly, what prompted Kendra to write the book.  Support the podcast on Patreon

Buglife's citizen science project, the Scottish Oil Beetle Hunt, needs your help. As part of the partnership programme, Species on the Edge, members of the public are asked to look out for these amazing beetles and record any sightings. Looking for the Scottish Oil Beetle Scottish records of oil beetles on iRecord more than doubled last year due to the combined effort of the Scottish Oil Beetle Hunt and surveying carried out by the Species on the Edge team. Survey work for Short-necked Oil Beetle in particular yielded over 100 records of individual beetles, with many new sites discovered for the species. The Black Oil Beetle was also confirmed from Scotland, following doubt about previous records due to issues with misidentification. In 2023, Short-necked Oil Beetle were found on Tiree for the first time by Ranger Hayley Douglas. Long thought to be present, this discovery is the latest new island site for the species, following on from populations found in North Uist in 2022, and Barra and Islay in 2021. Species on the Edge is an ambitious four-year programme for species recovery in Scotland that aims to take action for 37 declining and threatened species across Scotland's coasts and islands. It is a partnership programme of eight organisations, funded by The National Lottery Heritage Fund. The partnership consists of Amphibian and Reptile Conservation, Bat Conservation Trust, Buglife, Bumblebee Conservation Trust, Butterfly Conservation, NatureScot, Plantlife and RSPB Scotland. One of these threatened species is the Short-necked Oil Beetle, which has only been found in a handful of locations within Scotland - the Isles of Coll, Islay and Tiree (Inner Hebrides), as well as Uist and Barra (Outer Hebrides). Classed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List, this species is at high risk of extinction and therefore it's imperative that we learn more about this amazing beetle to help improve its fortunes. Oil beetles are eye-catching, charismatic beetles that are so-called because they exude a yellowish oily substance from their leg joints when threatened. They have been described as looking like they're wearing an ill-fitting waistcoat; the 'waistcoat' being the short wing cases that do not fully cover the beetle's abdomen. Oil beetles are under threat. Populations have declined due to the loss of flower-rich habitats owing to changes in countryside management. As oil beetles are nest parasites of solitary bees, declines in populations of wild bees has worsened their fortunes further as they depend on them for survival. Scotland has fewer oil beetle records than both England and Wales, so it's possible that oil beetles are under recorded in Scotland. To get a better understanding of their current distribution in Scotland, it's important we keep a look at and hear about all sightings of oil beetles. Sally Morris, Buglife Conservation Officer, explains: "Last year was great for oil beetles in Scotland, but we're still far behind England and Wales for records - it's time we catch up! Have you ever seen a shiny black beetle that may be an oil beetle? Please send us a photo and help us to learn more about these amazing beetles within Scotland." Oil beetles have an amazing life cycle, intricately linked to that of solitary bees. After hatching, oil beetle larvae (known as triungulins) make their way onto a flower head where they lie in wait for a solitary bee. Using specialised hooks on their feet, they attach themselves to the back of a visiting female bee and when the bee returns to its underground nest, the triungulin disembarks and continues its development underground, eating through the bee's stores of pollen and nectar. Depending on species, they then emerge in the same or following year, as an adult oil beetle ready to start the life cycle all over again. There are five species of oil beetle in the UK, only three are found in Scotland, these are the Black Oil Beetle (Meloe proscarabaeus), Violet Oil Beetle (Meloe violaceus) and Shor...

EV SHOULD PAY-PER-MILE SAYS THINK TANKThe Centre for Policy Studies, an organisation with strong links to the Conservatives, has recommended to the Government, that all EVs are charged per mile, to help replace the lost vehicle excise duty venue. They go on to recommend a set amount of free mileage per year, with those in more remote locations allocated more. The rates would also tie into the weight of the vehicle. STELLANTIS PROMOTING KEEPING CARS ON THE ROAD LONGERThe average age of cars on the road is twelve years, but Stellantis is suggesting fifteen is easily possible with remanufacturing.

Despite being raised in the fields of England and having slept upon the Rainforest Canopies of Cameroon, Dr Trevor Dines' heart is intertwined with the flora of Wales. Recorded in his own personal Wildflower Meadow in North Wales' Conwy Valley, this interview charts Trevor's journey from the youngest member of the Wessex Orchid Society (when still only aged in single digits) to one of the inspirational forces behind the UK's largest botanical charity, Plantlife. Trevor has written books, presented a television programme for Channel 4, appeared on the likes of BBC's Countryfile and Springwatch, and prior to that, he spent 6 years manifesting the ground-breaking "New Atlas of the British and Irish Flora" - collating nine million records to map over 4,000 species of plants in the wild. Listening to his passion, you'll find it hard not to agree with Trevor, that: “I think you're born a botanist.” In this first of two episodes, we explore the importance of cattle and other creatures as vectors to help plants survive climate change, discuss what exactly a “Wildflower” is, and hear how when Trevor enters the countryside, it's “…like going to a party, meeting friends, family, and sometimes exciting unexpected strangers…!” Why not become a "Subscription Squirrel" on our Patreon, and help support the production of this podcast?
