Starlight Thursdays – Episode 260 This episode marks the 5-year anniversary of the mix series! To celebrate, we have something truly special: a guest mix from Carr Tell, inspired by the “Made in Montana” mixes I used to release on past anniversaries. This concept brings together tracks exclusively from Montana-based producers, curated and mixed into a single cohesive experience. I'm beyond thrilled to have Carr pick up where I left off with the project—it's a powerful full-circle moment. There's something magical about this kind of collaboration. Artists get to hear their music performed by another artist, often in ways they hadn't imagined. It can be eye-opening. And for our community, it's a chance to hear what I believe is the true sound of the Montana underground—a sound that may be subtle and nuanced, but deeply worth celebrating. For the DJ, it's no easy task. You're working with genres and styles you might not usually play, trying to piece them together like a jigsaw puzzle without the picture on the box. But that challenge can be transformational. Personally, this process gave me a deeper connection to every artist who contributed. I wanted to honor their work—I didn't want to let them down. Now, here we are: 260 mixes and 5 years in. We've hit over 52,000 streams, with listeners on every continent and in every state. What began as a way to stay connected during the pandemic has become something much more. We recently celebrated our 100th artist featured on the series. With live recordings from Montana festivals, club nights, house parties, and parades—across venues statewide—this archive includes everything from debut mixes to all-vinyl sets and original live performances. I can't express how grateful I am for the effort so many artists have put into this, and to our listeners: thank you for trusting us with your ears and making us feel heard. This has been a truly priceless experience. — BK Love Carr Tell: “One thing I've always loved about the Thursday mixes is how they give everyone a chance to be heard. Montana producers really showed up for this one. I'm never surprised—but I'm always impressed—by the talent this state holds! While this was a challenging mix, I loved every minute of it, weaving together multiple genres and BPMs into a story only Carr could Tell.” Track list Seas To The Sky - The Other Side Of Dawn Implied Lines - Ninteneaux Star Map - Lab Grade Talking Bout A Revolution - Tracy Chapman - Taboh Edit It Never Entered My Mind - Miles Davis - Tessub Edit Trippin - Ninteneaux Check Yo - Carr Tell Cellar Dweller - Hex and Hive SDB - Party Robbins Thought Shit - Quadratic Spheres Come Play with Us - Carr Tell First Hex - Hex and Hive Susie Q - CCR - Party Robbins Bootleg Unreleased - SHBASS Good Company - The Montana Boy Welcome To The Shit Show - Tessub Color Of Everything - Taboh Out Of This World - Gruv42 and Shane Dee Make Them Make Us - Shane Dee Fake I.D. - Rave Edit - DC CHI3F I.T.G.I.R.L. - Rave Edit - DC CHI3F

Can You Feel It?It's July, 1989 and the temperature is hot! Actually, for a lot of the UK it surprisingly was, but let's leave meteorological memories aside, we're talking the dancefloor. The country, the WHOLE nation was completely right on one, matey. Well maybe not the entire nation, but there was no doubt that the BPMs were sweeping the nation much quicker than the BSB squarial was in the last summer of the eighties. As 1988 became 1989, the underground was rapidly moving overground. The house sound of Chicago and Detroit had landed on our sceptred isle and we were making it out own. Artists such as The Beatmasters, Coldcut and Mark Moore's S-Express had stamped their authority on the charts and across the country as teens were pouring over Smash Hits for the lyrics of Inner City tracks and swapping mixtapes of the latest grooves. And, NOW That's What I Call Music were THERE!Well, yes they were, but that's not the whole story. Get on the dancefloor legendary compilers K-tel and new variously compiled whippershappers from Telstar, who (for once) were ahead of the compilation curve. Albums series such as Deep Heat (in those large cassette boxes Discog fans!) were bringing the cool kids a real mix of dance, hip hop and sounds from both sides of the Atlantic. So what did our friends at EMI/Virgin do? What they always do - respond, and then some!Join author, journalist, compiler and all round dance music fanatic Joe Muggs as we revisit the explosive dancefloor culture of summer 1989 though the lens of NOW Dance 89. Rediscover some iconic tracks from Inner City, Soul II Soul and Coldcut. Remember (because you may have forgotten) the VERY 89 sound of Hip House with the likes of The Cookie Crew, Merlin and (awesome super duper) Tyree. Find out how NOW navigated a groove between the mainstream and the emerging underground through some amazing 12” mixes and laid a blueprint for the impending sound of the 90s, and indeed an unavoidable cultural shift into the next century of pop and beyond. And if that wasn't enough, find out which dance icon Joe sought out an autograph from, how the legendary producer Youth may have missed a chance to be on The Fast Show, which track brings tears to mothers eyes at Big Fish Little Fish discos and why we need the uplifting and uniting experience of house music now more than ever.People, hold on! Welcome back to the Magician On Duty Journey Series! On this edition we welcome @hvidmand In the early hours of June 19, 2024, as the first light of dawn kissed the tranquil waters of a nearby lake, hvidmand embarked on a musical journey that transcends time and space. Utilizing the energy of the sunrise, he crafted a DJ set that blends 20 years of expertise with the raw beauty of nature. This set, recorded illegally by tapping power from a nearby restaurant, is a testament to the power of creativity and the human spirit. hvidmand's latest release is a masterful collection of meticulously selected tracks, each with a vocal element, woven together to tell a meaningful story that touches the soul. Featuring songs released before 2010, and even some dating back to 2005, every track is presented in lossless quality and mastered personally by hvidmand for an unparalleled audiophile experience. The set defies conventional structure, with BPMs ranging from 105 to 128, creating a dynamic, non-linear flow. hvidmand incorporates the 5Rhythms model, a modern interpretation of ecstatic dance developed by Gabrielle Roth in the 1970s. This approach explores the five emotional cycles, balancing positive and negative emotions to create a deeply immersive experience. hvidmand's deep understanding of how humans perceive sound frequencies, supported by electroencephalography (EEG) studies, allows him to craft a set that continuously stimulates the brain. By adding and removing frequencies, he creates a healing experience that tickles the mind and soothes the soul. I hope you will enjoy this journey as much as I did! The first thing you might realise during a MUSCLECARS set is the sheer musicality of the duo's selections. Vocals glimmer at the centre, unfolding into enchanting, soulful coos, while drums strike captivating rhythms and gilded synths reach towards the sky. It's a jazzy New York house sound mythologised by pioneers like Joe Claussell, Carlos Sanchez and Timmy Regisford (whose songs all make it to this RA Podcast). For years, New York natives Brandon Weems and Craig Handfield have run their Coloring Lessons party as a way to introduce a younger generation to this vital piece of dance music history. In a city that prides itself on fast walking, fast talking and, as of late, fast BPMs, their music is an invitation to ease into a more relaxing pace. This RA Podcast comes at a golden time for MUSCLECARS. In May, they released their RA-recommended debut album, Sugar Honey Iced Tea!, whose sultry (and undeniably catchy) lead single "Tonight" has gotten the stamp of approval, and a remix, from New York legend Louie Vega. And this Sunday, they hosted their annual Juneteenth block party outside the Lot Radio, where scores of Black dancers latched onto one another during sets from a multigenerational crew of Black DJs including Ron Trent, Lovie, Shawn Dub and MUSCLECARS themselves. This two-hour-plus mix takes us through the spiralling jazz of Herbie Hancock, the flashy disco of The Originals and lands us, finally, in "Water," the track that also closes out Sugar Honey Iced Tea!. @musclecarsnyc Read more at https://ra.co/podcast/941

Beatgridding your music has been a necessary evil for digital DJs who want to use features like sync, loop, beat-tied effects, accurate hotcues, and so on, for many years. However, while beatgridding 2.0 improved on beatgridding 1.0 by handling songs with slightly varying BPMs a little bit better, not much has changed over the years – until now, that is – because new software is now able to use AI to basically kill manual beatgridding entirely. People, beatgridding 3.0 is here – and we talked about it in this pod, and what it might mean for DJs.We moved on to talk about audio engineering for DJs and why it's important for DJs to have at least a basic grasp of what audio engineering is, and how they can use it in their hobby. Whether it's simply tidying up individual songs or making DJ mixes sound better, or going further and extracting audio from bigger pieces of work for use as a DJ, knowing your way around audio editors, audio repair software, and even audio routing software is a surefire way to improve what you're capable of doing… way before you get to your decks. And finally, this month we looked at motorised platters, spinning jogwheels, and asked the question: Why? They haven't gone away, which you might expect to have happened since turntables stopped appearing in DJ booths, and – lo and behold – now even turntables are on the way back. What is the enduring appeal of having something spinning on your DJ gear? We came up with some answers. As ever, this pod is supported 100% by the students of Digital DJ Tips and it was recorded in a live webinar with lots of student feedback. What some refer to broadly as "Latin club music"—from dembow to raptor house—is having a moment on dance floors around the world. Since making his mark at Manchester's legendary Swing Ting parties in the 2010s, Florentino, who is of Colombian heritage, has melded high-pressure perreo, cumbia and other styles with high BPMs and fat-bottomed bass in his DJ sets and productions. The result is an ultra-kinetic, cross-cultural sound that's influenced by UK soundsystem culture as much as the sounds of the massive, diverse scenes across Latin America. The pan-Latin influences are a big part of Florentino's sound palette, but they by no means define him. Interspersed with dancehall and soca are dubstep, pummelling techno, house, UK funky, grime and more. Over the years, his experimental side has also crystallized, whether it's through the deep, sometimes trippy, reggaeton of Sangre Nueva, his collaborative project with Kelman Duran and DJ Python, his sought-after bootlegs of deconstructed guaracha, or the releases on his Club Romantico label. Most recently, he's signed with UK giant XL Recordings, including for his latest EP, Kilometro Quinze. His dizzying range and propensity for rhythmic contortions is on full display in his RA Podcast. This is a riotous mix with big drops, bouncy basslines and crispy textures, showcasing Florentino's talent as a proper party-starter. @deejayflorentino Read more at https://ra.co/podcast/912

Kerrie started a label called Dark Machine Funk, a name which hints toward the kind of music she plays. And while the Irish artist might be a capital-T techno DJ, her idea of "dark" is a little different than the black-clad legions of her generation. You won't find whiplash-inducing BPMs or racy pop edits in her sets. Her idea of techno is more classicist, without veering towards the stuffy or the retro. Her DJIng and her productions bridge the divide between Euro and American styles. Hints of breakbeat or other broken patterns bring in ideas from the UK techno that she loves so much, such as the pivotal label Blueprint, where she's become a regular as of late. With her, the devil's in the details (listen to those deliciously twisted hi-hats in recent track "Transient Belief"), and that comes down to mixing records, too. Her RA Podcast is a fast but measured run-through of 90 minutes of techno by artists like Exium and Tensal and from labels such as Token and Soma. Though none of her own tunes make the tracklist, this mix perfectly captures Kerrie's style. She's someone who appreciates that the real power and force of techno comes from its groove, not just the impact of the kick drum or pure speed. @kerrie_DJ Read more at https://ra.co/podcast/896

LDLDN is DJ, producer - and most importantly - obsessed with music. A host on NTS Radio since 2012, his shows hop between jazz fusion, Detroit techno and anything else that generates a feeling. His SpaceBass parties and DJ sets at the likes of Erol Alkan's ‘To The Rhythm' at XOYO, I Love Acid at Corsica Studios, We Out Here Festival, Lovebox, Tate Modern and Secretsundaze swing easily between dancefloor steppers and more thoughtful, deeper grooves. Movement is key, genres and BPMs - not so much. Founding Natural Frequency Records has allowed LDLDN to bring all that together - releases that are musically diverse and tap into years of experience raving, collecting and dreaming about music. Tracks that aim to capture an emotion or idea in a genuine and interesting way. "My tastes cover so many different styles, tempos and vibes, it's often tricky to choose a particular direction for a mix. But after seeing some of the chaos at a recent Slothboogie party I thought I'd go straight in with some front-foot, late-night house, techno and acid selections to get you moving. A sprinkling of new and old - including stuff on my Natural Frequency label - recorded in one take to capture the energy. Really enjoyed putting this together and hope you do to"

This is Thys (Thijs de Vlieger): DJ, producer and composer from the north of the Netherlands. His DJ sets are a reflection of a two-decade-long musical course. With razor- sharp and unexpected mixing, he seamlessly blends a multitude of bass heavy genres. Creating energetic waves, not afraid to make bold leaps, but never losing sight of the groove. When producing club music De Vlieger loves to mix up BPMS and moods. His recent “Shoulder To Shoulder” EP is a clear statement of intent in that regard: a love letter to club music and the intuitive feeling of togetherness that loud music in a dark room can unlock for us. But when writing music in a more “composer” role, the range stretches even wider: Repeated collaborations with Amon Tobin, a short film for Iris Van Herpen with renowned harpist Lavinia Meijer (Biomimicry), a feature film with Salvador Breed (Mycelia; unreleased at the time of writing), three scores for contemporary dance performances, writing for full symphonic orchestra and classical ensembles, and an album composed for church organ, cello and viola, with the organ recorded by De Vlieger himself (unreleased): Thys will not be tied down to one sound or genre. As a member of widely recognised electronic music trio Noisia, Thys has toured the world for decades, has collaborated with and remixed a range of top tier artists like The Prodigy and Skrillex, and scored for AAA videogames such as DMC: Devil May Cry and Motorstorm: Apocalypse. Why Should DJs Know About Song Tempo?

We Create The Vibes Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 24, 2023 3:28

DJs should know about song tempo because it is an essential element of mixing and transitioning between songs. Tempo, or the speed at which a song is played, is measured in beats per minute (BPM), and DJs need to be able to match the BPM of one song to another to create a seamless mix. Here are some reasons why DJs should know about song tempo:Beatmatching: One of the fundamental skills that a DJ needs to master is beatmatching, which involves syncing the BPM of two songs so that they play in time with each other. This creates a smooth transition between the songs and keeps the energy level consistent.Mixing: DJs use tempo as a tool to create a seamless mix between tracks. By gradually increasing or decreasing the tempo, they can blend two songs together without the audience noticing the transition.Genre and Mood: Different genres of music have different tempos, and DJs need to be aware of this to create a suitable mood for their audience. For example, a DJ playing a set of dance music will typically use faster BPMs, while a DJ playing a set of chillout music will use slower BPMs.Performance: DJs often use tempo changes to add variety and keep the audience engaged during their performance. By gradually increasing or decreasing the tempo, they can build up the energy or slow things down, depending on the vibe they want to create. In summary, knowing about song tempo is essential for DJs because it allows them to create a seamless mix, match the mood of the audience, and keep the energy level consistent throughout their performance.Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/we-create-the-vibes-podcast/exclusive-contentAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

"I am going to take you on a ride where I will challenge you to back down or go with me," Parrish Smith says in the interview below. "If you don't like to do this, and you see a glimpse of me, you will dislike me. But the second time it happens again, I will be there to change your mind again, just to be challenged." It's a confident, confrontational idea that goes with an unusually confrontational RA Podcast, a mix that represents a truly free spirit in the European dance scene. Smith, who also moonlights in the band Volition Immanent with fellow Dutch trailblazer Mark Knekelhuis, makes and plays hard, aggressive techno. But instead of gabber BPMs and overdriven kick drums, he directly incorporates ideas, sounds and influences from rock, punk and metal, a tricky combination that he nails like few others have been able to. (Just check his album Light, Cruel & Vain.) Case in point: this mix blends Regis, Tzusing and Playboi Carti with Sepultura, Juno Reactor and Celldweller. It's a journey to the end of aesthetics, where opposites don't attract so much as crash and melt into each other. It's a fierce hour-and-a-half but never quite overbearing or overwhelming, gracefully weaving in and out of chaos like the work of someone who knows the real impact and art of heavy music. @parrishsmith Read more at https://ra.co/podcast/874

Dance music deepened its presence in pop culture this year, expanding into TikTok's nichest corners as well as Billboard Hot 100 charts. For the December edition of the Critics' Roundtable, staffers Chloë Cochran, Whitney Ajayi, Martha Pazienti Caidan and contributor Vanessa Maria reflect on the major milestones of 2022. Electronic music was part of global conversations on gender disparity and sexual violence, the group noted. Women's safety in clubs was a particularly concerning issue this year, they continued, highlighting incidents of needle spiking at clubs. On a more positive note, they applauded Butterz cofounder Elijah, RA's guest editor from earlier this year, whose efforts to educate on issues in the music industry led to a staff position at SOAS University of London. To hear more about these topics, as well as the popularity of higher BPMs and definitive tunes like "B.O.T.A. (Baddest Of Them All)," listen to the chat in full.

Jack, jack, jack….wait? What? Who is this Jack? It's 1987, and the future has arrived in the shape of the first No1 of the year courtesy of Steve ‘Silk' Hurley - House Music is here!Hold up, wait a minute! As the ninth edition of the famous Now, That's What I Call Music testified from within it's (so 80s!) Ring binder cover, the charts were much more varied. Whilst dance music was loading up its record box and turning up the BPMs for the coming 12 months, the 30 top chart hits across the four sides of the latest compilation was telling a whole different story. Those big jeans adverts (or was that River Phoenix?) were bringing a spritely 48 (!) Year old Ben E. King back to the top, Jackie Wilson was r-r-r-r-esplendent in plasticine all over again and even Freddie Mercury was camping up The Platters smash from 1956 with The Great Pretender. What decade are we in again?Fear not, as 1987 was definitely serving up its fair share of blistering singles from the likes of Robbie Nevil, The Blow Monkeys, a-Ha, Westworld and many others! Bright new things like Erasure, Curiosity Killed The Cat and Simply Red were rubbing shoulders with more experienced chart names like The Pretenders and Genesis whilst a swingorilliasnt smattering of one-off acts like Mental As Anything and Taffy were providing some shiny, memorable pop memories. And Hot Chocolate were back, Back, BACK and testing our knowledge of which Greatest Hits they were promoting this time (clue - not the Malteser one).So much to unpick, and who better to do it with than pop fan and Needle Mythology records' Will Harris. Find out how Will passed his Elvis impersonator test (and which song he chose), how he championed the store racks (and West London's soul boys) of the 80s Our Price stores, and how the Finn Brother's dad provided some much loved appreciation for his sons' demo tracks. And discover Will's big 1987 favourites from NOW9 and what was missing (spoiler - they were all on HITS6!)Let's fly high (like a rocket in the sky) back to a pop year like no other, and get ready for some great (BIG HAIR) memories!Altogether now, woooahh, we're half way there....
