Finding Jesus in the Old Testament Week Four: Jesus the Judge By Louie Marsh, 1-30-2022 Intro – 4 slides, last one can you blame me? 1) I must BELIEVE in Christ the Rock “7and the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 8“Take the staff, and assemble the congregation, you and Aaron your brother, and tell the rock before their eyes to yield its water. So you shall bring water out of the rock for them and give drink to the congregation and their cattle.” 9And Moses took the staff from before the Lord, as he commanded him. 10Then Moses and Aaron gathered the assembly together before the rock, and he said to them, “Hear now, you rebels: shall we bring water for you out of this rock?” 11And Moses lifted up his hand and struck the rock with his staff twice, and water came out abundantly, and the congregation drank, and their livestock. (Numbers 20:7–11, ESV) “1For I do not want you to be unaware, brothers, that our fathers were all under the cloud, and all passed through the sea, 2and all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea, 3and all ate the same spiritual food, 4and all drank the same spiritual drink. For they drank from the spiritual Rock that followed them, and the Rock was Christ.” (1 Corinthians 10:1–4, ESV) He is the sole foundation of TRUTH. Peter = petros = a rock This “rock” = petra – massive boulder “16Simon Peter replied, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” 17And Jesus answered him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven. 18And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.” (Matthew 16:16–18, ESV) I stand on Him “4As you come to him, a living stone rejected by men but in the sight of God chosen and precious, 5you yourselves like living stones are being built up as a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. 6For it stands in Scripture: “Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone, a cornerstone chosen and precious, and whoever believes in him will not be put to shame.” 7So the honor is for you who believe...” (1 Peter 2:4–7a, ESV) 2) The Rock causes many to STUMBLE. but for those who do not believe, “The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone,” 8and “A stone of stumbling, and a rock of offense.” They stumble because they disobey the word, as they were destined to do.” (1 Peter 2:7b-8, ESV) 3) The Rock's purity brings JUDGEMENT. 12And the Lord said to Moses and Aaron, “Because you did not believe in me, to uphold me as holy in the eyes of the people of Israel, therefore you shall not bring this assembly into the land that I have given them.”” (Numbers 20:12, ESV) “32Why? Because they did not pursue it by faith, but as if it were based on works. They have stumbled over the stumbling stone, 33as it is written, “Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone of stumbling, and a rock of offense; and whoever believes in him will not be put to shame.”” (Romans 9:32–33, ESV) This judgement is deep & “12For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart. 13And no creature is hidden from his sight, but all are naked and exposed to the eyes of him to whom we must give account.” (Hebrews 4:12–13, ESV) 4) Jesus judges man's ANGER. 10Then Moses and Aaron gathered the assembly together before the rock, and he said to them, “Hear now, you rebels: shall we bring water for you out of this rock?” 11And Moses lifted up his hand and struck the rock with his staff twice, Godly anger is GOOD. “5And he looked around at them with anger, grieved at their hardness of heart, and said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” He stretched it out, and his hand was restored.” (Mark 3:5, ESV) Human anger is DANGEROUS. “19Know this, my beloved brothers: let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger; 20for the anger of man does not produce the righteousness of God.” (James 1:19–20, ESV) All anger must be dealt with “26Be angry and do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger, 27and give no opportunity to the devil.” (Ephesians 4:26–27, ESV)
Happy Holidays film buds, this week we continue our analysis and review of varying Holiday/Christmas movies from different decades and regions. This episode, we begin with a discussion on Christmas movies and where they started, before beginning our main discussion: Criminal Christmas.Much like all of the films that remind people to be Nice, sometimes, it can be fun to walk on the Naughty side. Instead of talking about Die Hard or Iron Man 3, we talk about the crime classics LA Confidential, 8 Women, and In Bruges. Finding different Christmas and Holiday films to review has been a real pleasure, and we hope our listeners are getting as much out of it as we are. Be sure to check out last week's International Christmas episode or our Happiest Season Review, and definitely be here next week when we hit episode 200.Thanks y'all,The BudsEpisode GuideIntro - 00:00Christmas Movie Discussion - 00:31LA Confidential Clip - 12:08LA Confidential Review - 13:028 Women Clip - 30:248 Women Review - 30:45In Bruges Clip - 47:33In Bruges Review - 47:54What We're Watching, Awards Season Alert, and Outro - 01:06:19Total Runtime - 01:13:26Be a Friend to the Film Buds:thefilmbuds.comthefilmbudspodcast@gmail.compatreon.com/thebudsthefilmbuds.bandcamp.com@filmbuds on Twitter@thefilmbudspodcast on Instagram

Dealing with Doubt By Louie Marsh, 11-8-2020 Introduction: 4 pictures then… 2 out of every 3 Christians admit to experiencing a season of spiritual doubt. More than a quarter of Christ-followers still find themselves doubting. The most common response to spiritual doubt? Quit attending church (46%) Look around you this morning. 1 out of every 4 people you see is struggling with spiritual doubt – right now. 1) Doubt is a fairly COMMON experience. “17And when they saw him they worshiped him, but some doubted.” (Matthew 28:17, ESV) What is doubt? Faith - Committed to affirming something is true Unbelief – Committed to denying something is true Doubt – No commitment because I’m not sure. Doubt is being UNSURE about something. Jesus didn’t CONDEMN believes who had doubts. “27Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here, and see my hands; and put out your hand, and place it in my side. Do not disbelieve, but believe.”” (John 20:27, ESV) 2) I need to recognize and deal with it IMMEDIATELY. “6But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind.” (James 1:6, ESV) “26Be angry and do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger, 27and give no opportunity to the devil.” (Ephesians 4:26–27, ESV) “23So if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, 24leave your gift there before the altar and go. First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift.” (Matthew 5:23–24, ESV) 3) You deal with doubt by RUNNING TOWARDS God, not away from Him! “Wrong Way” Riegels On January 1, 1929, the Golden Bears faced the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California, USA. Midway through the second quarter, Riegels, who played center on both offensive and defensive lines and who was then playing in a role similar to that of the modern defensive nose guard or nose tackle, picked up a fumble by Tech's Jack "Stumpy" Thomason. Just 30 yards away from the Yellow Jackets' end zone, Riegels was somehow turned around and ran 69 yards in the wrong direction. The following describes what transpired from Riegels perspective: I was running toward the sidelines when I picked up the ball," Riegels told The Associated Press. "I started to turn to my left toward Tech's goal. Somebody shoved me and I bounded right off into a tackler. In pivoting to get away from him, I completely lost my bearings.” — Roy Riegels “22And it has often cast him into fire and into water, to destroy him. But if you can do anything, have compassion on us and help us.” 23And Jesus said to him, “ ‘If you can’! All things are possible for one who believes.” 24Immediately the father of the child cried out and said, “I believe; help my unbelief!” 25And when Jesus saw that a crowd came running together, he rebuked the unclean spirit, saying to it, “You mute and deaf spirit, I command you, come out of him and never enter him again.”” (Mark 9:22–25, ESV) “15but in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect,” (1 Peter 3:15, ESV)
Intro: Last week, we talked about four spiritual heart conditions from Acts 8. When you and I put our trust in the finished work of Jesus Christ, we were given a new spiritual heart. The Holy Spirit lives in us. So, the question must be raised, how do we guard our spiritual heart? On this communion Sunday, I thought we need to take a look at a few key passages that give us practical guidelines about guarding our heart. Next week we will look at Saul's journey in Acts 9. Proverbs 4:20-27We Need to Listen and Pay Attention v. 20Keep These Words of Wisdom Front of You and Within Your Heart v. 21Here is the reason: "They are life to those who find them and health to one's whole body." v. 22Here is the key to living life well.Above All Else, guard you heart, v. 23The activity of guarding our hearts must be continual and consistentEverything we do comes out of our heartGood or evilWarren Wiersbe in his book, Live Like a King notes, "The eyes see what the heart loves. If the heart loves God and is single in devotion, then the eyes will see God weather others see Him or not."The Practical Application v 24Keep your mouth free from perversity;Keep corrupt talk far from your lips.Gossip, slander, etc.Keep your eyes focused straight ahead on wisdom of the Word v. 25Give careful thought to your decisions v. 26Be unmoved to walk with GodIs God glorified by this decision?Doing the right thing is not necessarily going to be a popular choice in our cultureDon't be distracted by evil v. 27Don't walk the evil pathIllust: The heart is the “master-control” of the life; a wrong heart always produces a wrong life. To allow sin into the heart is to pollute the entire life… “The unexamined life is not worth living,” said Socrates. The Lord is pondering (examining) our lives (Pr 5:21, 15:3, Je 17:10, 2Chr 16:9), and we must examine them too (cp 2Co 13:5). Live in God’s Word and He will protect your path, direct your path, and perfect your path, for the glory of Jesus Christ. (Wiersbe's Expository Outlines on the Old Testament. Wheaton, IL: Victor Books) Closing: As we come around the Lord's Table, perhaps, privately, we can ask these words with a sincere heart, "Search me, God, and know my heart; See if there be any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting."(Ps. 139:23-24).
Today, we’re going to get a special treat of chatting with Laura Perry. Laura is someone who knows firsthand what it’s like to struggle with gender identity. Some of her childhood and teenage experiences molded her as a young woman, just like they do for all of us - but in her case, she began to believe it was a disgusting, filthy, worthless thing to be a female - so, the logical option for her was to begin the journey of “transitioning” into a man. She spent nine years as a transgender, but after years of hormone therapies, a double mastectomy/chest reconstruction, the removal of all female organs, and all of the legal name and gender status changes, she was empty and broken. During this time, she was invited to a bible study and ended up giving her life to Jesus, and after that, she really became aware with and started to wrestle with who God had made her to be. Today, Laura will tell you that she’s been transformed, and for the first time in her life, because of her IDENTITY in Christy, she loves being a woman. Laura is the author of a book called Transgender to Transformed where she testifies through raw, honest emotion, about the common deceptions of the transgender lifestyle. She exposes the frustration and hopelessness of living with a self-created identity that so many others shy away from admitting, let alone talking about. In her book, you’ll find practical insights into the mind of a transgender that will help you understand how to better love them, how to handle loved ones who are transitioning, and hope for those who are struggling with gender dysphoria. I’m excited for you to hear Laura’s story from her words, so let's dive in!Here are some things we mentioned in this episode: First Stone MinistriesLaura's WebsiteWalt Heyer's Book, Trans Life SurvivorsMatthew 16:24-26Be sure to stay up to date with Abundant Life: You Were Made for More by visiting our blog - and if you're loving the podcast, send guest recommendations to us or leave us a star-rating/review on your favorite listening platform to spread the word about the you were made for more message. You Were Made for More Social Media: FacebookTwitterInstagram
Myth #1: Being angry is always wrong Ephesians 4:26Be angry, and do not sin": do not let the sun go down on your wrath. Myth #2: Anger is beyond my control Joshua 24:15 choose this day who you will serve. Being angry is not always wrong and Anger is a choice Mark 11:13 Seeing in the distance a fig tree in leaf, he went to find out if it had any fruit. When he reached it, he found nothing but leaves, because it was not the season for figs. 14 Then he said to the tree, “May no one ever eat fruit from you again.” And his disciples heard him say it.Alo means notAlu mean indeed#01 Jesus was angry because of selfishness.Luke 12:15 “Be careful and guard against all kinds of greed. Or selfishness People do not get life from the many things they own.” 16 Then Jesus used this story: “There was a rich man who had some land. His land grew a very good crop of food. 17 He thought to himself, ‘What will I do? I have no place to keep all my crops.’ 18 “Then he said, ‘I know what I will do. I will tear down my barns and build bigger barns! I will put all my wheat and good things together in my new barns. 19 Then I can say to myself, I have many good things stored. I have saved enough for many years. Rest, eat, drink, and enjoy life!’ 20 “But God said to that man, ‘Foolish man! Tonight you will die. So what about the things you prepared for yourself? Who will get those things now?’ 21 “This is how it will be for anyone who saves things only for himself. To God that person is not rich.”Be a giverMark 3:1 Another time Jesus went into the synagogue, and a man with a shriveled hand was there. 2 Some of them were looking for a reason to accuse Jesus, so they watched him closely to see if he would heal him on the Sabbath. 3 Jesus said to the man with the shriveled hand, “Stand up in front of everyone.” 4 Then Jesus asked them, “Which is lawful on the Sabbath: to do good or to do evil, to save life or to kill?” But they remained silent. 5 He looked around at them in anger and, deeply distressed at their stubborn hearts, said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” He stretched it out, and his hand was completely restored. #02 Jesus was angry because of religionReligion is doing a God thing without God.It wasn’t notorious sinners who killed Jesus, it was the religious.John 2:13-17 The Passover of the Jews was at hand, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. 14 In the temple he found those who were selling oxen and sheep and pigeons, and the money-changers sitting there. 15 And making a whip of cords, he drove them all out of the temple, with the sheep and oxen. And he poured out the coins of the money-changers and overturned their tables. 16 And he told those who sold the pigeons, “Take these things away; do not make my Father's house a house of trade.”Matthew 21:12-13 He overturned the tables of the money changers and the benches of those selling doves. “It is written,” he said to them, “‘My house will be called a house of prayer,’ but you are making it ‘a den of robbers.’”#03 Jesus was angry because of cheating Proverbs 11:1 The Lord hates cheating and delights in honesty.Matthew 18:4 Whoever humbles himself as this little child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.Matthew 19:13 The
The wise husband: faithful to his wife, rejoices in her, treats her as God’s good gift. The wise wife: excellent character, is kind to her husband, builds up her home. Marriages go through seasons. You do not have to stay stuck in one. God can give you greater love for each other. Resolving Conflict Ephesians 4:25-27; 32 25Therefore, having put away falsehood, let each one of you speak the truth with his neighbor, for we are members one of another. 26Be angry and do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger, 27and give no opportunity to the devil. 32Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you. Put away falsehood, speak the truth Not only “do not lie;” “speak the truth.” “Neighbors” “members one of another” – Relationships are built on truth. Be honest and open. If something is bothering you, say so. Let not steadfast love and faithfulness forsake you; bind them around your neck; write them on the tablet of your heart. (Pr 3:3) In your anger do not sin When we’re offended, we tend to return the favor. (Harsh words, withdrawal, passive-aggressiveness) Stop the cycle of the sin of retaliating with blessing. Do not repay evil for evil or reviling for reviling, but on the contrary, bless, for to this you were called, that you may obtain a blessing. (1 Pe 3:9) Talk when you can speak rationally and not sin with an angry tongue. A soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger. (Pr 15:1) Do not let the sun go down on your anger Resolve conflict. Don’t put it off. Unresolved anger grows to resentment and bitterness. Do not give the devil a foothold Instead of unity, leaving issues unresolved is leaving a crevice that the enemy can exploit. Leaving issues unresolved is cooperating with the enemy. Be kind to one another, tenderhearted Be kind, compassionate, good hearted (strong-boweled) toward each other. What is desired in a man is steadfast love. (Pr 19:22a) Forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you Everyone sins and makes mistakes and needs forgiveness. Lasting love is only possible in an environment of forgiveness. Whoever covers an offense seeks love, but he who repeats a matter separates close friends. (Pr 17:9) Resolving Conflict • Put away falsehood, speak the truth • In your anger do not sin • Do not let the sun go down on your anger • Do not give the devil a foothold • Be kind to one another • Forgive one another How to Talk 1. Recognize your own sin, especially pride. (“The Lord detests all the proud of heart” – Pr 16:5a) 2. Start with, “I’m not going anywhere. We’ll figure this out.” 3. Stop talking and listen – really listen – to each other. 4. Don’t argue to win. Talk to resolve and reconcile. 5. Find value in your spouse’s view. 6. Find out where you agree. 7. Take steps toward each other, not apart.

He asked that he might die: “It is enough; now, O Lord, take away my life, for I am no better than my ancestors.”5Then he lay down under the broom tree and fell asleep. Suddenly an angel touched him and said to him, “Get up and eat.” 6He looked, and there at his head was a cake baked on hot stones, and a jar of water. He ate and drank, and lay down again. 7The angel of the Lord came a second time, touched him, and said, “Get up and eat, otherwise the journey will be too much for you.” 8He got up, and ate and drank; then he went in the strength of that food forty days and forty nights to Horeb the mount of God.Psalm 34:1-81I will bless the Lord| at all times; the praise of God shall ever be | in my mouth. 2I will glory | in the Lord; let the lowly hear | and rejoice. 3Proclaim with me the greatness | of the Lord; let us exalt God’s | name together. 4I sought the Lord, who | answered me and delivered me from | all my terrors. R 5Look upon the Lord| and be radiant, and let not your faces | be ashamed. 6I called in my affliction, and | the Lord heard me and saved me from | all my troubles. 7The angel of the Lord encamps around those who | fear the Lord and de- | livers them. 8Taste and see that the | Lord is good; happy are they who take ref- | uge in God! REphesians 4:25--5:225So then, putting away falsehood, let all of us speak the truth to our neighbors, for we are members of one another. 26Be angry but do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger, 27and do not make room for the devil. 28Thieves must give up stealing; rather let them labor and work honestly with their own hands, so as to have something to share with the needy. 29Let no evil talk come out of your mouths, but only what is useful for building up, as there is need, so that your words may give grace to those who hear. 30And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with which you were marked with a seal for the day of redemption. 31Put away from you all bitterness and wrath and anger and wrangling and slander, together with all malice, 32and be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ has forgiven you. 5:1Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children, 2and live in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.John 6:35, 41-5135Jesus said to [the crowd,] “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty. 41Then the Jews began to complain about him because he said, “I am the bread that came down from heaven.” 42They were saying, “Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How can he now say, ‘I have come down from heaven’?” 43Jesus answered them, “Do not complain among yourselves. 44No one can come to me unless drawn by the Father who sent me; and I will raise that person up on the last day. 45It is written in the prophets, ‘And they shall all be taught by God.’ Everyone who has heard and learned from the Father comes to me. 46Not that anyone has seen the Father except the one who is from God; he has seen the Father. 47Very truly, I tell you, whoever believes has eternal life. 48I am the bread of life. 49Your ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness, and they died. 50This is the bread that comes down from heaven, so that one may eat of it and not die. 51I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats of this bread will live forever; and the bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh.”
Ephesians 4:17—5:2 17Now this I say and testify in the Lord, that you must no longer walk as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their minds. 18They are darkened in their understanding, alienated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them, due to their hardness of heart. 19They have become callous and have given themselves up to sensuality, greedy to practice every kind of impurity. 20But that is not the way you learned Christ!— 21assuming that you have heard about him and were taught in him, as the truth is in Jesus, 22to put off your old self, which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires, 23and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds, 24and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness. 25Therefore, having put away falsehood, let each one of you speak the truth with his neighbor, for we are members one of another. 26Be angry and do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger, 27and give no opportunity to the devil. 28Let the thief no longer steal, but rather let him labor, doing honest work with his own hands, so that he may have something to share with anyone in need. 29Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear. 30And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. 31Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice. 32Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you. 1Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children. 2And walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.
This week I'm joined by Chris Paladino from Promethium Marketing. He's been a busy guy over the last year so I consider it a minor coup that I stole an hour of his time to get into his experiences as a member of the Microsoft's Gamerscore Blog as well as the genesis of Promethium Marketing and his current role there. We tangent off into some more philosophical gaming discussion topics that were certainly more thought provoking than I had anticipated, but that's the fun of having a podcast like this.
