Travel can have a lasting impact at any age but if you’re a teenager and you’re away from your family on some kind of student exchange program then it’s even more likely to be life-changing, and Episode 203 of The Thoughtful Travel Podcast looks at this idea in this episode about student exchange trips. First up, we hear briefly from Abby Lewtas who describes her experience as a fourteen-year-old on exchange in the United States - the same as I was when I went to Germany on an equally life-altering school trip. I then chat to Patti Buff, an American writer who by chance happened to spend a year as a teenager here in my very own home state of Western Australia. It was so fabulous to chat with her and this is just an extract of a much longer conversation! Finally, one of my listeners, Jane, spoke to me about another angle of student exchanges: being the host family. Jane taught me a lot about all the benefits of student exchange trips to those families where the students end up staying - something I’d never thought much about even though I know it from my own experience to be true. We've all heard about culture shock, but what about reverse culture shock?! Today on the Create a Life that is Beautiful Podcast, Leticia is speaking with Life Coach, Abby Lewtas from The Wanderlusters Mind Podcast about how she got to be doing the work she does today supporting travellers, adventurers and nomads through reverse culture shock when returning home after time abroad. "TRAVEL IS LIKE GOING TO SCHOOL FOR LEARNING ABOUT YOU AND LEARNING ABOUT THE WORLD." This is a real thing my friends! After time abroad we can tend to find that our friendships have changed, financial reserves have plummeted, we need to find a new job or start something new, we might feel a little uncomfortable, anxious, depressed or expect to ease right back into our old life but find we have changed so much that it's harder than we thought. These are all typical feelings experienced during reverse culture shock. "EVERYTHING FELL INTO PLACE WHEN I STARTED TO MAKE THE PLAN, SO I KNEW IT WAS THE RIGHT DECISION." Prior to this work, Abby spent 3 and a half years travelling through South America and then living in Canada before she returned home and went through her own experience of reverse culture shock. And before her time abroad, she worked in a regular 9-5 and also was an athlete. She went from being someone very much in her masculine and in a strict routine to travelling and reconnecting with her feminine energy and flow to working as a life coach. “I WAS GOING TO MAKE IT UP AS I WENT AND THIS ALLOWED ME TO BE IN THIS FLOWING ENERGY.” Abby's story is another beautiful example of the power of following your intuition and embracing your flow. Both topics we explore in Embrace Your Feminine Essence which opens for enrolment on Monday 25 June 2018. Find out more here. IN THIS EPISODE, FIND OUT ABOUT: What travel teaches you: the benefits of travel and how Abby made her move overseas Reverse culture shock and the issues you experience when returning home after time abroad Following and trusting the call and your intuition Embracing both your feminine energy and living life in the flow Dealing with emotional fear and overcoming worry Friendships and coping with changing relationships, particularly when returning home after time abroad Becoming your own best friend Life coaching and how she got started Abby's advice for discovering purpose and finding work you love, enjoy & are inspired by You can find the show notes for this episode at www.leticiaringe.com/abbylewtas

This is an episode that demonstrates why I love long form interviews. Time allows me to penetrate deeper into the heart and mind of people I have the privilege of interviewing. My guest today, Abby Lewtas, is a world traveller and host of The Wanderlusters Mind Podcast. I imagined that our conversation would centre on travel and adventure. How travel is this wonderful teacher, as the lessons are taught before an adventure, during the adventure, and when you arrive home from your adventure. Abby and I do discuss such lessons like having the courage to leave a comfortable routine, being vulnerable and stepping out of your comfort zone, and becoming more open-minded and curious. Abby also talks about intuition and paying attention to the little, adventurous, voice inside you that tries to nudge you down new paths. That if you don’t listen to what your body is trying to communicate to you, then you will feel stuck and nothing will ever change. But where this conversation takes a beautiful turn is when I ask Abby what she is most fearful of in her life right now. I could feel Abby breathing into her heart. Abby lead with the rawness of her vulnerability, and her answer could be echoed through the soul of many people today—the struggle to find human connection with so much technology in our life. When our heads are down in the palm of our hands, how can we see the beautiful faces of the world trying to connect with us? I hope you enjoy x www.liveimmediately.com

Reverse culture shock - the kind of culture shock you get when you return to your home country - is worse than just regular culture shock, I think. If you head to a country with a significantly different culture from your own, then you’re expecting to be shocked. But if you’ve been travelling or living abroad for a while and you return home, you don’t expect to be the victim of culture shock - or in this case, reverse culture shock. In Episode 81 of The Thoughtful Travel Podcast, I speak with three guests who’ve all had varying experiences with culture shock when they return to their home country. Having been through it myself, quite strongly, when I returned to live in Australia after five and a half years away in Asia and Europe, I always find it so reassuring to hear that others have had similar experiences - though I wish I’d known more back when I was first experiencing reverse culture shock so I could have had some resources to help me get past it more quickly. In this episode I start by speaking with Kati Craythorn. Born and raised in Germany, she now calls Queensland, Australia home, and experiences some interesting symptoms of reverse culture shock when she goes to visit family and friends in Germany these days. She also had her own experience of culture shock when returning to Australia after a stay in South Africa. Next, I chat with Abby Lewtas who is also no stranger to reverse culture shock. Abby spent years travelling for various pursuits including a stint training for the Olympic bobsled team - obviously something that needs a colder climate than Australia can provide - and then struggled with the expectations of returning home to set up a life back in Australia. She’s now helping other people who go through the same shock and has a lot of great suggestions on how to deal with it. Finally, I had a great talk with James Thomas who lives an interesting ex-pat life in Taiwan, after studying in China. When he returns to the United States to visit family, he finds even many of the conversations are tricky, and we chat in some depth about the feelings you experience when suffering from reverse culture shock. Links: Thanks to sponsor Glamping Hub - https://glampinghub.com Kati at Queensland and Beyond - http://www.queenslandandbeyond.com Abby Lewtas’ website - life coach for travellers returning home - http://www.abbylewtas.com James at Four Seas, One Family - http://www.fourseasonefamily.com/ Episode 51 on Reverse Culture Shock - https://www.notaballerina.com/2017/04/reverse-culture-shock-episode-51-thoughtful-travel-podcast.html Join our Facebook group https://www.facebook.com/groups/thoughtfultravellersShow notes: http://notaballerina.com/81

This is one of those travel adventures that only happens to brave (and crazy) people like Hayden.  Finally, Amanda chats with Carly Findlay who has a more regular experience of solo travel, and in fact very similar to Amanda's own experience.
