This being the first co-production between the Soviet Union and the West is also a very interesting and unique aspect of the flim that you can actually feel while watching it. I gave this film a 7.5/10 for entertaining throughout and offering up fun quanderies about leadership that gets audiences thinking a little too! For my full written review feel free to follow my instagram: https://www.instagram.com/film_haven_reviews/

I'm so thrilled this week to be talking with Dr. Nan Carmack about a book that profoundly impacted her, Ahab's Wife, or the Star-gazer by Sena Jeter Naslund. This book is a brilliant recapturing of the life of Ahab's wife from Moby Dick and is the author, Nasland's demonstration of a beautiful female journey in juxtaposition of Melville's inherently male story. The life of our protagonist, Una, is largely set in Nantucket, so we enjoyed Nantucket cocktails while discussing all the interesting aspects of this adventure novel.Nan Carmack is the Director of Library Development and Networking at the Library of Virginia. She works with all of the public libraries in the commonwealth. She is also an adjunct professor at Old Dominion University's Masters in Library and Information Science. After a first career as a mental health therapist and then a short stint as an independent bookstore owner, Nan finds that public libraries are the perfect intersection of social justice and intellectual curiosity. She is an amateur artist and enjoys getting her hands dirty in the garden. She has become one of those embarrassing people whose dogs are her children, now that her family has flown the coop. She is also the founding president of Mayyim Hayyim Living Waters Community Mikveh and Education Center in Massachusetts.  We speak about midrash, feminism, menstrual justice, and making meaning of ancient stories and rituals.  View the transcript here.  Follow Just For This on instagram: @justforthispodcast justforthispodcast.com

The Last Magdalene does for the New Testament what The Red Tent did for the Old Testament. The temple of Asherah has existed in Jerusalem for hundreds of years, disguised as a benevolent society for widows and orphans. Within the sheltering walls, priestesses are taught to honor the goddess through rites of passion passed from mother to daughter and from priestess to priestess. Into this world, Miriam of Bethany, is born.Miriam longs to become The Magdalene, High Priestess of Asherah, as her mother and grandmother before her, but learns she is to marry an obscure rabbi from Galilee, Yeshua bar Yosef. Determined to control her own life, she runs away and is brutally attacked in the streets of Jerusalem. Broken in body and spirit, she resigns herself to her fate.Yeshua, hailed as the Messiah, teaches love and acceptance, and places Miriam in the forefront of his followers. Together they find the courage to face the hostility of the priests and the brutality of Roman occupation. But Rome is a power unlike any the world has known, and Rome deals harshly with those who oppose its rule. The Last Magdalene is an exquisite story of passion and love, and the lasting power of one woman's voice which refuses to be silenced.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/houseofmysteryradio. What if the secrets to strength and resilience are hidden in the annals of women's shared histories?   Today, I am unearthing these stories, illuminating the silent strength of our foremothers, and embracing the power of sisterhood. I dive into the societal perceptions of women through different life stages and tackle the stigma and shame linked to women's bodies. I recognize the wisdom in seeking help and the freedom in finding our own paths.   Imagine a time when women thrived in multigenerational living, and the guidance of elder women — the crone — was cherished. I traverse through this era, understanding the impact of patriarchy and cultural shifts on women's communal living. I unveil the repercussions of transitioning from these cohesive communities to isolated nuclear households.  Along this journey, I find solace in the narratives woven in books like The Red Tent and Women Who Run With the Wolves. They serve as mirrors to our societies, reflecting both their charm and scars. By appreciating these historical shifts and rekindling the spirit of sisterhood, I aspire to reclaim the power and unity that was once ours.  Join me on this remarkable journey to rediscover our collective strength. Chapter Summaries: The Power of Sisterhood (0:00:05)  We explore the power of sisterhood, wisdom of elders, societal perceptions of women, collective wisdom, seeking help, and the stigma of women's bodies. The Strength and Unity of Women (0:13:20)  We explore the strength of women, communal living, the wisdom of the crone, fear and suspicion of women, nuclear households, and books like the Red Tent and Women Who Run With the Wolves. "Unite in sisterhood, reclaim wisdom from the past, and empower each other for an unstoppable journey ahead." - Elizabeth Sherman Get full show notes and more information here: https://elizabethsherman.com/podcast/143

The Numinous Podcast with Carmen Spagnola: Intuition, Spirituality and the Mystery of Life

Sophie Strand is a poet and writer with a focus on the intersection of spirituality, storytelling, and ecology. If you love Mary Magdalene and fondly remember Anita Diamant's The Red Tent, you are in for a real treat! Sophie's new book, The Madonna Secret, is a passionate retelling of the story of Mary Magdalene and Jesus, rewilding the Gospels with the forgotten voices of defiant and oppressed women, the nature-based storytelling of oral communities, and the embodied eroticism of a lovable rabbi with appetites and desires, doubts and shame, and a playful sense of humor. Plus, his awesome mom – aka The Virgin Mary – is a raucous and wonderful surprise, giving big time Baubo of Greek myth vibes, (who in my mind could be played wonderfully by Shohreh Aghdashloo of The Expanse fame). In this conversation, we talk about what it's like to write about miracles while living with an incurable disease, (Sophie lives with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, a connective tissue disorder - something that many members of the Numinous Network are all too familiar). We also discuss animism, magic, patriarchy, and the realness she brings to the landscape and the characters of her novel. Sophie's poems and essays have appeared in numerous projects and publications, including Spirituality & Health, Atmos, Braided Way and Art PAPERS. The author of The Flowering Wand, she lives in the Hudson Valley of New York.   Purchase The Madonna Secret anywhere (and please do leave a review!)   Follow Sophie: SophieStrand.com Her Substack Instagram Facebook   References in this episode: older Dev Patel Louis Garrel  Golshifteh Farhani (Oh now that I see who she is, I LOVED her in that dystopian show, Invasion) young Javier Bardem article about Bruce Chilton Bruce Chilton wikipedia Honi the Circle Drawer Hanina ben Dosa Contemporaries of Jesus who were miracle workers   Learn more about the Numinous Network Sign up for my newsletter and join us for Free Week, Sept 17-23, 2023

Episode Summary:Have you ever been told that embracing your feminine energy means sacrificing your ambition? Or that tapping into your emotions is a sign of weakness? These deeply held, centuries old societal messages have caused women to discount their feminine gifts, and, instead, embody a masculine model in order to be perceived as strong and successful. However, unlocking your true potential requires recognizing and embracing BOTH the divine feminine and sacred masculine energies.THIS is the key, not only to greater personal growth and potential, but to changing societal norms to value feminine perspectives as EQUAL to masculine models. My guest this week, Crystal Cockerham, is a truly inspiring spiritual leader and author. She helps women embrace their divine feminine energy and unlock their full potential by guiding them through their unique journeys of self-discovery using the Red Tent method. In this episode we:Explore the power of the Red Tent traditionExpand our understanding of divine feminine and sacred masculine forces and their role in our livesUncover the benefits of honoring womanhood for personal and collective growthLearn how to tap into your innate intuitive abilitiesRealize the transformative power of creating better self-awareness“Our entire life is nothing but one giant transformation. In this episode of The Mama Psychedelia Podcast, I interview Stéphanie Liévana, a mama of one, living in a small off grid ‘town' in Baja California Sur, Mexico. Stéphanie is a dear sister and inspiration in my life, walking the path of a medicine woman. In our time together Stéphanie shares some of her life's journey. She was born in Brazil and grew up in Mexico, in her twenties she found herself in Baja. Along the way she fell in love with her beloved partner and ultimately got pregnant, after being diagnosed with hypothyroidism as a child and being told by several doctors, she would never be able to conceive and have a child naturally. She credits this experience to her own healing journey, coming off of medication, finding plant medicines and devoting to a new way of being. She has always been deeply connected with children, and over the past several years found deeper connection with the spirits of Ayahuasca, Peyote, Tobacco & Santa Maria. Ceremony has become an important part of her life, as well as community, El Santuario is a beautiful land that she stewards with our dear sister Ayara Sollua and family, a beautiful Red Tent and Temezcal resides on this sacred land. Stéphanie's heart is so beautiful and there is so much wisdom here that she shares with us along with the story of her magical birth experience. This week we chat with Kelsey Madges, an Ohio middle school librarian and book lover. We talk about the highs and the lows of working in school libraries. If you're like us, it's been almost 40 years since you were a middle schooler and lots has changed for kids and the librarians who help them, such as the use of Chromebooks in classes and the current prevalence of book bans. But Kelsey is a book lover and supporter through and through. In fact she admits that she enjoys almost everything she reads. In this episode, we also cover how we feel about book quotes, why letter writing is still important, and what Carrie should have tattooed on her body. It's another challenging episode as we look at the story of Dinah. Leah and Jacob's only daughter, Dinah, is "violated" by a prince of Shechem. The young man then offers to pay her bride price to Jacob and his sons, who despise the foreigner. They request that everyone in town get circumcised in exchange for Dinah's hand in marriage, and while the townsmen are recovering, Dinah's brothers, Simeon and Levi, murder every male in the city. While this story is often called "the r*pe of Dinah," scholars and writers point out that in the text, Dinah's consent is not the issue at stake--it is in fact the consent of her brothers and father. J, David, and Sue look at many readings of this disturbing passage and lift up Anita Diamant's excellent midrash The Red Tent as a window into modern meaning-making, while also holding the difficulties of other possible interpretations. We also follow matriarch Rachel to her death as she gives birth to her and Jacob's final son, Benjamin, and see Jacob smash the idols of his family's former life as they flee the horror of Shechem. In today's episode of The Women's Vibrancy Code, Maraya is joined by renowned intimacy wellness expert Susan Bratton to discuss female libido on a deep level. In our society, talking openly about feminine sexual desire - and sexual hesitancies - is often looked on as taboo. However, sex from a patriarchal standpoint is often celebrated. That leaves many women lost and feeling disconnected, especially when they are experiencing low bouts of libido. It's possible to experience passion and healthy intimacy at any age for women, and a lot of the work of uncovering intimacy disconnections comes from a variety of places: past trauma, physical pain, a lack of understanding of a woman's own anatomy, lack of supplements, etc. By speaking frankly and openly about sex both anatomically and intellectually, this episode helps get to the heart of reclaiming libido at any age. IN THIS EPISODE: [04:45] The different aspects of libido [09:37] How female and male sexual anatomy are similar - and how they're different [21:37] Understanding how different aspects of sexuality education work together [24:07] Techniques, schools of thought and supplements for women to regain lost libido KEY TAKEAWAYS: The feminine experience with sex can be quite different from the patriarchal perspective, leaving many women to suffer through lost libido or uncomfortable sex in silence. But by destigmatizing the topic and by looking at sex and its associated issues as anatomical and psychological, we can get to the heart of how to master powerful, healthy and pleasurable libido as women at any age. My guest today is a renowned neuroscientist and women's health expert whose work has been featured on stages and in media around the world.
