My name is Heather. And I know what it's like to live on autopilot, “sell yourself short” and live within limits of societal and self-imposed limitations. But I also know what it's like to break free from that, redefine what's possible and achieve big goals! There were so many things that almost stopped me along the way, and my goal is to help stop the things that are stopping you from discovering what you are truly capable of! It's not too late to change your story and reach your own podium finish (whatever that may be). Trust me – I've done it! Heather Moyse is one of Canada's great multi-sport athletes. A four-time Olympian in two-man Bobsleigh, Heather won gold at the 2010 Winter Games in Vancouver, and again at the 2014 Games in Sochi. Before she was an Olympic champion, Heather was a mainstay on Canada's Senior Women's Rugby Team. Heather led Canada to silver in the 2013 Rugby Sevens World Cup, and was the top try scorer in the 2006 and 2010 Women's Rugby World Cups. In 2016, Heather became only the second Canadian, and first Canadian female, to be inducted into the World Rugby Hall of Fame. Heather represented Canada in a third international sport in 2012, when she placed Top Five in two events at the Pan-Am Track Cycling Championships in Argentina. And in 2016, before deciding to compete for her fourth Olympic Games in 2018 at 39, Heather climbed Antarctica's highest peak, Mount Vinson, as part of an expedition to support the members of the Canadian Armed Forces. Heather has a master's degree in occupational therapy, and is a highly sought-after motivational speaker. If you're familiar with mental training in professional sports, you're in for a treat! You may have heard of the incredible technique of visualization or mental rehearsal. It's the process of mentally rehearsing the desired outcome. Bobsleigh pilots like Francesco Friedrich, for example, rehearse their next course hundreds of times so that their bodies and minds know almost automatically when to turn left, right, or hit the brakes. And of course, all the other peak performers like Tiger Woods or Serena Williams, who are running the Olympics, use the power of visualization to outperform their competitors. The extraordinary swim star Michael Phelps, for example, accelerated his mental game not just by thinking about the best possible outcome. He mentally rehearsed even alternate outcomes and variations of the upcoming event! “When I would visualize, it would be whatever I wanted it to be, and it would be whatever I didn't want it to be. You are always ready no matter what comes your way,” says Phelps, and that is a true winners mindset. The most amazing thing about mental rehearsal or visualization is that our brain doesn't know whether we've physically practiced or just imagined it. It will always react the same way as if you were physically doing it. And there's more! Visualization is also a fantastic tool for bringing clarity, commitment, and drive to your teams and businesses. Steve Jobs, an extremely successful entrepreneur and storyteller of this century, showed us the best way to do it. He was a huge advocate and fan of simple yet successful visualizations and presentations. If you want to learn how to do it like them and boost your success in any area of your life, join our fun and engaging episode and listen to a true expert in visualization and visual facilitation! It's two years until the next Winter Olympics at Milan-Cortina in 2026, so we are in a winter sports mood! Milan-Cortina's slidingnovela (where the sliding events will take place) has us curious about bobsled, so Australian bobsledder (bobsleigher?) Breeana Walker joins us to talk monobob. Bree competed at Beijing 2022 in both the two-woman and the monobob, placing 16th and 5th respectively. We've wanted to talk about monobob for a while, and Bree sheds some light on the sport for us, including body weight differences between the two events, why you need different sets of runners, and why they call it the lonely sport. Plus, we get into the costs of sleds and runners--you'll be shocked at how much they can cost. Follow Bree on social @bobsledbree, and check out her YouTube channel and website. Because it's two years until the next Winter Games, there is a bunch of news from Milan-Cortina, not all of it rosy.  The good news: The NHL is back in the Olympics! They've come to an agreement to have pro players compete at 2026 and 2030, and we are here for it! The not-so-good news: The sliding track is one construction project we've been focused on, but there are more construction issues happening that could affect other sports and where some athletes sleep. In Paris 2024 news, French police are investigating the way Paris 2024 CEO Tony Estanguet is paid and whether that is skirting French law in the wrong way. Final spectator numbers for the Opening Ceremony have been announced--and they're quite a bit lower than originally planned. Pride House is looking for volunteers, both in-person and remotely. Find more information here. Tickets for Team NL house are on sale--and it's a pretty good deal! Find them here. Following up from our Youth Olympic Games coverage, the IOC will announce the next Winter YOG host next year. In news from TKFLASTAN, we hear from: Artistic swimmer Jacqueline Simoneau Curler John Shuster Shooter Kim Rhode The Big O (or Owe) Author Andrew Maraniss--register for his March 5 book launch at Parnassus Books in Nashville here. Jeannette welcomes Adele Nicoll, an elite athlete and multi-sport competitor, to discuss Adele's journey into athletics, her natural talent and passion for sports, and her dedication to training and competing in shot put, discus, and bobsleigh. Adele shares her experiences of overcoming challenges, including the financial struggles of being a self-funded athlete, and the importance of having supportive relationships and role models. She also highlights the need for greater visibility and investment in women's sports, emphasising the value that individual athletes can bring to businesses and the wider community KEY TAKEAWAYS Adele acknowledges that she had natural athletic ability from a young age, but she also emphasises the importance of hard work and dedication in achieving success. Talent may open doors, but it is the effort that takes you to the top. Pushing through emotions and fulfilling your commitments, helps to demonstrate resilience and determination. There is a need for more female role models in sports, particularly in individual sports like athletics. Adele believes that visibility and support from businesses are crucial in promoting women in sports and creating equal opportunities. Adele encourages businesses to consider investing in individual athletes and not just team sports. She suggests that athletes can offer valuable skills and insights to businesses, such as motivation, inspiration, and resilience, which can benefit employees and contribute to better results BEST MOMENTS "I think there is a balance of obviously recovery is huge in what I do and I have to make sure I'm sleeping and I'm getting rest and I think I have this year become better at recognising when I'm getting run down because that's when you have to say I need a day off." "I think that to see change, there needs to be a merge between investment into sport, to see it not just as sport. Because I think that's sometimes the hesitancy with a lot of, I guess, businesses, they think, well, sport doesn't align with what we do. Sport aligns with everything that businesses do." "I think we really need to make it clear that it's never about males versus females. I think that it's always about females standing on their own on the same level as males, not to fight against males or to compete against males. It's about having the equal opportunity, the equal visibility."   This is the perfect time to get focused on what YOU want to really achieve in your business, career, and life. Mike Steven's life changed drastically at the age of 12 when he became a double amputee after being electrocuted at the Vaaldam. After years in hospital, he could return to school, but it was in a wheelchair. Prosthetics changed his life and by the time he finished high school Stevens told BizNews he was “fully adapted, mobile and wanted to do things.” A period when Stevens could not afford his own prosthetics made him realise what other amputees, especially children go through, and he joined Jumping Kids, a non-profit organisation that provides access to prosthetic equipment for children. Stevens always enjoyed sport and being able to participate at a competitive level, he rowed, sailed and kite-surfed but the tricky Paralympic categories prevented him from following in the footsteps of his father, Geoff Stevens who was an Olympian sailor in the 1992 Barcelona Olympic. A chance meeting with another para athlete led to a path down an icy track at speeds of over 120km/h and Stevens became one of the few para bobsledders in Africa. Stevens told BizNews of his hope to include bobsleigh as a Paralympic event, where his ‘vasbyt' comes from and how he wants to turn Jumping Kids into a social enterprise. South Africa, he said, could be a leader in Africa in providing prosthetics for the growing number of amputees. On Episode 67 we speak to Age grouper Brian Stokes.Brian's played rugby and cricket at school and joined the Royal Marine Commandos at 17. He didn't have much time for too much sport in the beginning within that career as he was away on operations or on exercise. A little later into his career he took an opportunity to represent the Navy at Bobsleigh, which he did and then did 3 inter-service championships. he even had an opportunity to race for the junior GB squad. From there he moved base where the Royal Marines started playing rugby league. Brian got involved and eventually represented the Marines and Navy. Brian left the forces and joined the fire service. He continued to play rugby league in a semi pro league. After a while he switched codes again and played both Union and league for about 6 years. Ended up starting a club in the town he lived in and continued playing for a few more seasons. During Brians time in the fire service, he got into cycling after a tragic accident of a colleague. The team cycled to Bournemouth and Brian did it on a borrowed bike. It was this event that gave Brian the bugler cycling. A colleague and former para on his watch, asked Brian to do a triathlon and then it became a bit of a competition between them. They raced sprints first and then aimed to qualify for the worlds in Vancouver which they both did. Unfortunately due to finances he couldn't take his spot. From there he was pretty hooked. He carried on with rugby and represented the county and Royal Navy at rugby Union in the vets and he  still plays today even around his Triathlon training. I took up track cycling for a while but missed the challenge of multi sport so signed up for another challenge and did an Ultra. That gave me the bug once more so completed another Ironman distance event. Brian left the fire service for the police, but found that it wasn't really working for him so an opportunity came for him to go back to the Royal Marines as a full time reservist working with cadets and schools which is where he is now. please enjoy this pod and if you do please leave a review, like and comment.you can follow Brian on Instagram @stokesy72if your interested in the Triathlon Guys Events duathlon in March you can get 15% off using the code AMP15 their website is https://www.thetriguys.co.ukand you can find them on instagram @thetriguys_coachingYou can listen to this AMP episode and all the others on most podcast platforms Find us on Instagram @amp_1967Twitter  agegroupmultisportpodcastFacebook AMPGBWebsite is : agegroupmultisportpodcast.buzzsprout.comemail: agegroupmultisportpodcast@gmail.com

The dramatic journey of Jamaica's first Olympic bobsleigh

The comedy film classic Cool Runnings, about a Jamaican bobsleigh team's surprising efforts to get to the Winter Olympics, was inspired by a real story. Dudley Stokes was an officer in the Jamaican army and hadn't really heard of the sport until his superiors gave a presentation to try and recruit volunteers to take part in the country's first Olympic bobsleigh team. Some of his colleagues were put off by the danger involved as they watched a film of a bobsleigh hurtling down an icy track, but Dudley wasn't. He got on to the team as a driver and became the captain. Dudley tells Anu Anand about the difficult journey to the 1988 Winter Olympics, with only a few months training, and how he coped with a dramatic crash at the Games as the world watched.
