WISCONSIN MUSIC PODCAST Episode 024 Gary Tanin / Daystorm Music Audio Engineer, Music Producer, and Publicist Gary Tanin (born Gary Stefan Tanin, 19 September 1952, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin) is a veteran Milwaukee musician/producer/engineer with a career spanning decades and reflecting two central themes: music and technology. Biography At age 16, Tanin had already laid the foundation for his calling when landed a record deal with Odessa Records, recording his original material. While attending the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee during the early 70's, Tanin apprenticed as an audio engineer at ARCO Recording Studios where he studied the Art and Science of audio recording and production. In the mid 70s he released the critically acclaimed, self-produced concept album Otto & The Elevators. In the early 80's he foresaw the unique possibility of combining newly emerging computer technology with music. He produced dozens of artists during the 70s and 80s. He has had numerous articles published in industry publications, including the CMC Source Book and AfterTouch(tm). These special interests led to Tanin's work with garageband.com co-founder Jerry Harrison (of the rock band Talking Heads).  Harrison contributed to Sublime Nation, Tanin's 1995 solo CD released by MultiMusicaUSA. In addition to Sublime Nation, Gary has released several national critically acclaimed CDs of his own and produced local, national, and international artists. Tanin's Japanese/US release, XPensive Dogs, is an intercontinental fusion of east and west. A follow-up to XPensive Dogs, entitled DOG EAT DOG, was released in 2004. Japanese label Hard Disc International released XPensive Dogs, and Sublime Nation was released in Japan on the Mouse Records imprint. Tanin's entire catalog is being distributed in the US by RockIt Records (USA).[3] Gary Tanin has produced for bands like the BoDeans, Monovox, and Sam Llanas, and mastering for the likes of ex-Violent Femmes drummer Victor DeLorenzo and Daryl Stuermer (of Phil Collins and Genesis fame). The podcast has been about Techno from the early beginnings. But besides Techno, I really like exploring the boundaries of what electronic music can be. I follow a lot of artists and I have discovered so much beautiful music in the last decade. Some of the tracks don't fit within the sets I usually create. But I really have the need to do something with it. Aftertouch is a podcast I once created as a playground to experiment, but was not active for a long time. This is a reboot and will be posted in the Low Frequency stream. Aftertouch will focus on Ambient, IDM, Noise, Drones, Soundscapes,... You name it. The purpose is to create a mind blowing experience. Some space where you can loose yourself, or find yourself, be creative, unwind or just the opposite. There will be no taking in the podcast, just music. That should speak for itself. It presents carefully selected Deep, Minimal, Dub Techno and House music on vinyl and digital. MixCult also serves as the parent label for “Spitzer Records”, an ambient/drone inclined subdivision with fresh experiments from artists from around the globe. He is also part of Sub.Spiele Records, a label from Cologne, Germany, that combines both aesthetics and deep music. His touring has included cities like Santo Domingo, Miami, New York, Orlando, San Francisco, Tokyo, Nagoya, Osaka and Kyoto, Trakai, Barcelona and Madrid.
