Andreas Clenow needs no introduction and has a lengthy history in the algorithmic trading industry. A Swed who has lived in Switzerland for quite some time he has recently published a fiction novel set in the underworld of the secretive Swiss banking industry. He says you can learn more about finance from that than his textbooks! His contribution to the field of systematic trading has been enormous, with his three absolutely invaluable books: Following the Trend; Stocks on the Move; and Trading Evolved. The books cover everything from futures trading to stocks and then to programming it all in Python yourself. Clenow's books go into great detail and give you all the strategy detail needed to get you moving. We had an insightful discussion with him about the strategies in his books and then about his latest venture: a new mobile app called Hush. It's essentially a fund for the broader audience so we were particularly keen to uncover the strategies he is deploying in there. Trade well & prosper!

Russia's central bank has been targeted with sanctions by the United States in an attempt to cripple the Russian economy following the invasion of Ukraine. The measures block Americans from engaging in any transactions involving Russia's central bank, finance ministry or national wealth fund. It comes on top of action by the US and EU to bar some of Russia's banks from the SWIFT international payments system. The ruble has plunged as a result to less than one ruble to one US cent. The stock market in Moscow failed to open on Monday. We asked Oleg Vyugin former First Deputy Chairman of the Central Bank of Russia if these sanctions would affect the financing of the war in Ukraine. Also in the programme, we hear from people in the midst of the chaos in Ukraine. First, we speak to Olga Shapoval, who is an executive director of the city of Kharkiv's IT cluster, in north-eastern Ukraine. We then hear from Oleg Chernyak of the software development company CHI Software. He is normally based in Kharkiv and has been trying to run his business as the war intensifies. Now he is is in Carpathian Mountains in the West of the Country. The ostentation wealth of the Russian oligarchs has come in for intense scrutiny from regulators and financial watchdogs. From the massive yachts in the Bahamas to the stately homes and London mansions these people are obvious targets. We spoke to Oliver Bullough the author of Moneyland: Why Thieves and Crooks Now Rule the World and How to Take It Back about whether the latest sanctions would hit these targets. Next, we asked Andreas Clenow if Switzerland have broken their pledge of neutrality in regards to it's announcements of joining the EU in it's sanctions. Andreas is a Swiss author, entrepreneur and asset manager, based in Zurich, where he is the Chief Investment Officer of a family office. Lastly, in a strange twist the war in Ukraine may well give an extraordinary push to the adoption of carbon free renewable energy in Europe, as countries, in particular Germany accelerate their move away from Russian gas. Holger Schmieding, Chief Economist at Berenberg Bank, told us whether the change in Germany would filter through to other economies on the continent. In today's programme we are joined by Jyoti Malhotra in Delhi & Mitchell Hartman in Oregon. (PICTURE CREDIT: GETTY)

Chief Investment Officer of Zurich-based Acies Asset Management, critically acclaimed author, and systematic trend-following expert Andreas Clenow, CMT brings decades of asset management experience to the podcast this month. Episode #7 of Fill the Gap focuses on the process and precision of strategy development and so much more.     Challenging the very definitions of commonly held terms in the investment industry, Andreas brought wit and candor to this interview while engaging honestly with the debate around systematic vs discretionary money management. We encourage all of our listeners to check their assumptions as Andreas helped define these approaches through terms such as mechanical and unsupervised.    Digging into the common pitfalls of the business, Andreas spoke authentically about lessons he has learned personally as a trader, fund manager, strategy developer, and allocator of hedge funds across all asset classes. Perhaps most important for listeners this month is the concept that managers will inevitably find periods where their strategy is out of style with the market, but as Andreas says “You can lose money by following your rules, or by breaking your rules. One is just much easier to explain to investors.”     A lifelong learner and investigator of markets, Andreas is forever exploring new concepts and approaches. Have you ever built a trading strategy completely void of historical price data? Want to better understand the commercial business of trading strategies as product development? Longing to read a novelized account of the dark underbelly of Swiss financiers? We explore all of this and more with Andreas Clenow, CMT in episode #7 of Fill the Gap!   To better understand the concepts covered, we recommend reviewing the supplemental resources accompanying this episode using this link: go.cmtassociation.org/ftge7

In episode 188 we welcome our guest, Andreas Clenow. Meb and Andreas start the conversation with a  hat on what hooked Andreas on trend following, and his book, Following the Trend. Andreas discusses running trend following as a portfolio strategy, not something that is optimal to run on a single market. He talks about some basic fundamentals of trend following, including the premise that it’s about taking a lot of bets on a large number of markets independently. Meb then asks Andreas to get into some detail about risk management and position sizing. Andreas defines the way he thinks about risk, and goes back and forth with Meb about the reality of return expectations and compounding. Meb follows by asking what has changed with his approach over the years. Andreas responds with the idea of realizing it’s about strategy and business, and the business has changed a lot. The conversation transitions into how trend following can fit into an investment portfolio. Andreas offers that the strategy can serve as a core building block of a larger portfolio. He talks about some of the environments where trend following has done particularly well, and the challenge with diversification in equities. As the conversation winds down, Meb asks about Andreas’ new book, Trading Evolved: Anyone can Build Killer Trading Strategies in Python. Andreas describes the book as a guide for readers to build backtests and strategies in the programming language, Python. All this and more in episode 188, including Andreas’s most memorable investment.
