The most important game mechanism is, of course, the Game Master of a roleplaying game. Roleplaying games are all about making choices as-if you are your character and then seeing what happens as a consequence. This week the Angry GM gave me a long-overdue kick up the butt when I read an article on his blog. This episode is a response to that kick up the butt. Big thanks to the Angry GM for his book and blog - I hope he won't mind the extensive quotation from them. Thanks to Frank T for calling in! As lost episodes go, this one has been pretty lost. For at least a year. But, never fear. We found enough bits laying around unused to make a healthy episode just for you. Together we can learn about poisoning, moose, some kind of owl goat cross breed, and bits of the sea. It’s all good fun on this episode of GM Word of the Week podcast. Our main topic was emotional bleed. There were some great emails this week, discussing Power Point spending, diversity and stereotypes, more session zero, commentary on kids in gaming, and super powers as a future topic. As promised, here's the link to the Angry GM article discussed in Ian's email, Gaming for Fun (Part 1): Eight Kinds of Fun
A bunch of call-ins which inspired me, a long reading from one of my favourite RPG gaming books, and a dollop of my random musings makes this episodes a wild mash-up of ideas... and I am desperately hoping it hangs together. This one's unscripted, not very well thought-through, and unapologetically all I've got this week. Hope you find something useful in here. In Season 1 we explored two major game structures that have stood the test of time: the Dungeoncrawl and the Hexcrawl. Ever since the release of The Chaosium's “Call of Cthulhu” roleplaying game in 1981, there entered a third major game structure into the annuls of RPG play. Today, I want to have a look at this third structure and outline how you can incorporate Mystery into your games.
