Initially, it was only going to be a promotional design to celebrate the 40th year of operation for Hote Design, a German design and modeling studio founded by his father who was a former designer at Audi. Hote had worked on the Sport quattro and many, many more Audis over the years, and the Sport quattro made for the perfect starting point for an idea that would eventually form to create a car company intent on reinterpeting iconic performance cars in a modern EV form. In October we visited the Hote studios and saw the car, which will be featured in the Q1_2023 issue of quattro Magazine. Per l'azienda, si trattava di un omaggio alla diversità. Ma in tanti non gradirono: l'effetto sbiancante del docciaschiuma appariva nella migliore delle ipotesi un inspiegabile scivolone, nella peggiore un messaggio razzista, neanche tanto velato. Dai social partì un'ondata di indignazione che fece sparire velocemente lo spot incriminato. Perché quella reazione? Perché, a prescindere dalle intenzioni dell'azienda, quella pubblicità riprendeva un motivo che, nei secoli, si era radicato in molte culture, non solo europee: quello dello “sbiancare un etiope” (o “un moro”, “un nero”), col significato di “fare uno sforzo inutile” o “tentare un'impresa impossibile”. Di questo motivo culturale tanto profondo quanto nascosto, che affonda le proprie radici nei primi secoli dopo Cristo e arriva fino ai giorni nostri, Federico Faloppa raccoglie qui i frammenti e ricostruisce le vicende, muovendosi tra proverbi popolari, fiabe antiche e commedie secentesche, affreschi medievali e dipinti rinascimentali, vignette satiriche e manifesti pubblicitari, pamphlet politici e romanzi autobiografici. Si scopre così che la favola attribuita a Esopo del servo (nero) lavato e sfregato dal proprio padrone trova nei libri per bambini di epoca moderna risvolti moraleggianti e pedagogici sull'immutabilità della natura e dell'ordine sociale, o che il battesimo dell'etiope raccontato negli Atti degli Apostoli diventa motivo iconografico privilegiato nell'Olanda post Riforma protestante. E si tracciano fili rossi che uniscono i padri della Chiesa ed Erasmo da Rotterdam, libri di emblemi e mondi alla rovescia, poesia burlesca e letteratura alchemica, pubblicità di saponi e propaganda fascista, fino ad arrivare a Calimero, il pulcino nero sbiancato da un detersivo che ha segnato l'immaginario italiano del secondo dopoguerra.Nel ripercorrere la sorprendente storia di questo topos di lunga durata, scopriamo anche una vera e propria ossessione “occidentale”, quella per il bianco, attraverso i tentativi – allegorici o reali – di “sbiancare l'etiope”, e di costruire un sistema prima simbolico e poi razzista per raccontare e governare il mondo a propria immagine e somiglianza.Federico Faloppa è Professor of Italian Studies and Linguistics nel Department of Cultures and Languages dell'Università di Reading, in Gran Bretagna. The endlessly cyclical nature of life is depicted as four different stories in a sleepy Italian village. Le Quattro Volte, a film from 2010 by Michelangelo Frammertino, is like a vision of an ancient world, although the story takes place in our century. I call it a story, but it has more of the quality of myth. The slow rhythm of daily life for an old goat herder in Calabria is conveyed superbly and with precise meditative attention. It's a life of routine, which the old man, who is in bad health, endures without regret. Calabria is the poorest region in Italy, the part in the south that looks like the toe of a boot on the map—rugged hilly, and mountainous. The goat herder's village in the film is perched on top of a hill, with rustic architecture that looks like we're still in the Middle Ages. The goats are in a pen at the town limits, as the road out snakes downward. Every day he walks steadily to the pen, rouses the herd, and then leads them out and into the surrounding hills and meadows. While they feed on grass and other plants, he sits quietly, sometimes dozing off. With him is a shepherd dog, a border collie, who knows exactly how to lead the goats where the herder wants them. As the film immerses us in the steady, repetitive life in this rural area, we notice the unspoken bond between the man and the dog, and in fact with the goats as well. All is expressed more in grunts and sighs than in words. I tried to find the subtitle function on the Blu Ray I was watching, and I realized that there were no subtitles, because so very little is said during the movie that you don't need them. Silence itself is almost a major character. Outside of the credits, there's no musical score. Instead, the outstanding sound design presents all the little sounds of the country—the wind and the animals—in all the complexity they reveal in nature. The title of the film, Le Quattro Volte, means The Four Times. Why is that? We start to find out when our attention leaves the goatherd and focuses on a little newborn goat. Now, the story, if we can call it that, is all about this one tiny being and his daily actions and struggles living in the herd. The gentle beauty we've experienced shows another side: the harsh necessities of survival, depicted in the most elemental and heart-rending way when the baby goat gets separated from the others and wanders about crying for help, finally resting, all tired out, beneath a tall tree. The tree is now the main character, and we are shown its life and presence, the waving of branches and rustling of leaves, and once again an eternal quiet at the heart of life. Suddenly it's winter. Snow covers the ground. Men chop down the tree, and take it to town. Now it's an inanimate object, and they use it as part of a holiday celebration. After that, it's burned, turned into charcoal, and becomes part of a large kiln carefully built and operated by the villagers. The four times are four lives: human, animal, vegetable, and mineral. The idea that the mineral also has a kind of life is part of an ancient world view in which everything, animate or not, is filled with spirit. Frammertino was inspired by the legend that the philosopher Pythagoras claimed to remember living four lives. The doctrine is called metempsychosis, but the movie isn't teaching a doctrine—it's just inspired by this idea of transmigrating souls to envision nature subjectively, as being a person, a goat, a tree, a piece of charcoal. The experience of watching Le Quattro Volte is like nothing else in cinema. It's a film of spiritual sublimity.

Cuando llegaron los primeros coches de tracción total destinados al asfalto, a primeros de los 80, no había desembarcado la electrónica como ahora. Los primeros tracción total eran bastante simples, con un diferencial en cada eje y otro más central, bloqueable. Diferenciales convencionales que se llevaban mal con los casi recién llegados sistemas ABS. La llegada del diferencial Torsen al Audi Quattro en 1987 mejora el comportamiento del coche. Inteligentes. Con el tiempo la tracción total en coches destinados básicamente al asfalto, se hace más y más sofisticada. A los iniciales diferenciales convencionales, con autoblocante o sin él, se unen los diferenciales tipo viscoso o Ferguson, el excelente Torsen mecánico pero que permite un desigual reparto del par en cada eje y los Haldex y otros diferenciales gestionados electrónicamente. Más peso. Todas las marcas su van sumando a la moda, que ya es un Tsunami, de la tracción total. Y aunque todos presumen de hacer estos sistemas más simples y más ligeros, lo cierto es que son complicados y que pesan. Hibridación. Paralelamente, sin que tenga nada que ver, llegan los coches híbridos. Al principio la hibridación es muy leve, una simple ayuda. Pero poco a poco las baterías van creciendo, llegan los enchufables y crece la autonomía y la potencia de los motores eléctricos. Y a algún listo se le ocurre: ¿Y si ponemos los motores eléctricos en el eje no motriz y convertimos a nuestro hibrido en tracción total? Dicho y hecho, ahora son multitud los coches híbridos que son tracción total gracias a los motores eléctricos. ¿Es una ventaja? Y llegamos a la pregunta que nos hacíamos al comenzar, ¿es tan buena la tracción total? Si te mueves por zonas montañosas de forma frecuente, ya sea por la zona donde vives o por tus aficiones, la tracción total es una ventaja importante. Pero si no es así, pues no vale la pena. Conclusión. Hoy es fácil. Si te mueves con frecuencia por zonas con tierra, nieve o hielo, tu coche es un 4x4, aunque sea un deportivo. Si la tracción total te sale, entre comillas, “gratis” porque el híbrido que te gusta aprovecha sus motores eléctricos para ser un 4x4, perfecto. Pero si no encajas en ninguno de esos dos apartados, no te gastes ni un duro en poner tracción total a tu coche. Coche de día.
