It's been a sad week for craft beer lovers.  A story we couldn't skip, Anchor Brewing is closing after 127 years in business. This one hits you right in the nostalgia as a craft beer drinker, but I'll be the first to admit I was part of the problem here.  The last few years I think Christmas Ale is the only Anchor beer I've purchased.  There are just so many great choices today.  Whether I'm at my local brewery or bottle shop, there are tons of amazing beers to be had and some of the old faithfuls don't get the love they once did.Close to home Atlanta Brewing Co. reported their lease was cancelled at Underground Atlanta, where they planned to re-open after closing  last Summer.  Although we thought this was the end of them news came out after the show that they aren't giving up yet.We start off the show with tomato talk.  Right, tomatoes.  In beers, not in beers, and in the glorious BLT.  Tis the season. There's also some fun news with a new champ for the Beer Mile.  Chug, run, chug, run.  The chug time was a bit slow but the run time made up for.  And Asia is getting a brewery on a cruise ship.  We didn't know until we started digging around but apparently there's already one in North America - Carnival Vista's Red Frog Pub & Brewery.A new (well, old) grain is making waves in brewing.  Funio is a gluten-free grain that is very eco friendly and, apparently, has a closer taste to "real" beer than other gluten-free alternatives.  Brooklyn Brewing has made beer with it and they're encouraging others to do the same.We were thirsty during the show so here are our Beers of the WeekAnchor - West Coast IPASierra Nevada - Ruthless Rye IPAHigh-Wire - Big Boy Thiolized NEIPAHalfway Crooks - Farina LagerVitamin Sea - Greetings from Weymouth IPASweetwater - Gummies Fruit Punch IIPAThanks for listening to Beer Guys Radio! UpCountry Brewing's John Cochran has a long brewing history UpCountry Brewing is one of Asheville's newer breweries but it's not the first brewing rodeo for founder John Cochran. Cochran got his start at Marthasville Brewing, one of Georgia's first and, unfortunately, short lived.  Way back in the dark ages (the mid-1990s) there wasn't much craft beer to be had in Georgia.  The US was feeling the effects of the 90s brewery bust and this little southern state was behind the times to begin with.  After departing Marthasville Cochran worked at Atlanta Brewing Co. where he met "Spike" Buckowski, the pair would eventually partner to open Terrapin Beer Co. Many years were spent working around the harsh Georgia alcohol laws to build Terrapin into one of the most popular breweries in the Southeast.  In 2016 MillerCoors took a "majority stake" in Terrapin.  Buckowski chose to stay with the company while Cochran departed to start UpCountry. This week, we talk about those early days of Georgia beer, the importance of diversifying your beverage portfolio, pickle beers, working with distributors vs. self-distribution, and a few other odds and ends. Talking wild yeast and craft malt with Sceptre Brewing Arts Sceptre Brewing Arts has had an interesting life. Originally opened in 2017 as Oak Brewpub, it quickly closed. Then it reopened... then closed again. After closure #2 the owners of Atlanta's Argosy beer bar scooped it up to open Sceptre. What a ride.  Trevor Jones knew the owners from Argosy. He's brewed with Atlanta Brewing Co. (Red Brick Brewing at the time) and Orpheus. Sceptre's beers use 100% craft malt and, when possible, craft malt sourced from the Southeast. We chat about Sceptre's first year, what's coming up from the brewery, their collaboration with ATL Beer Gang to brew Black is Beautiful, craft malt, and wrangling wild lager yeast.  Good times. Trevor Jones relaxes in the Beer Guys studio after sharing and discussing some of his beers. Riverbend Malt House makes craft malt for craft brewers Hops get all the love when it comes to craft beer but malt is getting more attention thanks to a small network of craft maltsters.  For brewers in the South, Riverbend Malt House in Asheville, North Carolina offers up several barley, wheat, and rye artisan malts from locally sourced grains.  By working with local farmers, Riverbend reduces the average food miles travel for their malts from 3,000 to about 300, reducing the carbon emissions by 4.5 tons for each truckload of grain. (Source)  Their small batch grains also offer unique flavor profiles in specialty malts for craft brewers.  Much like a craft brewery, independence is at the heart of a craft malt house. The North American Craft Maltsters Guild also requires maltsters to source at least 50% of their raw material from the local area, and produces less than 20 million pounds of grain per year. Riverbend's Brent Manning and Matt Thompson join us this week to answer all our malty questions.  We know malt, but we don't know malt, you know?  We discuss what malt is, what makes a craft malt house, local sourcing grains, and what that means for the environment.  Gavin McKenna from Atlanta Brewing Company also joined us to talk about craft malt from a brewer's perspective and we sample his Homestand, a Pilsner brewed with Riverbend malt.  After our malt talk, we sat down with McKenna and Cameron Davis to talk more about the new Atlanta Brewing Company.  You can listen to that episode here. Red Brick returns to their roots as Atlanta Brewing Company - BGR Extra

New people, new beers, and an old name for Atlanta Brewing Company  Opened in 1993, Atlanta Brewing Company is the oldest production brewery in Georgia.  They started with that name but changed to Red Brick Brewing Co. in 2010, named after their most popular beer.  It’s surprising that our oldest brewery is only 25, but with that little Prohibition thing in America and Georgia’s historically awful brewery laws, that’s quite a feat.  Others have come and gone, some moved on to open other breweries, but Atlanta Brewing Co. has stood strong, even when they shouldn’t have. Director of Brewing Operations Gavin McKenna joined Atlanta Brewing Co. in June 2017 after four years at the popular Wrecking Bar Brewpub.  Although there’s renewed popularity of the beer since McKenna came on board, he’s quick to admit there were many others that helped build the brewery well before he stepped foot inside.  A visit to the taproom offers up 20 varied and unique beers from popular hazy IPAs to classic English ales and even a “Lagerwine.”  When McKenna joined the team he offered suggestions to improve beer quality and was met with some resistance.  Many people on the team had been there for years, and he was the new guy.  Over time his suggestions worked, the beer improved, and the craft beer community began to take notice. To celebrate their 25th-anniversary Marketing Director Cameron Davis shares the details of their month-long celebration all around Atlanta, culminating with the official anniversary party at the brewery on September 29th.  The team collaborated with several breweries for the festivities and will release these collaborations in the taproom and at collaborating breweries throughout the month. Imperial Stout Hype Whale will also see three new variant releases at their Hangover Party on the 30th. McKenna and Davis sat down with us this week to talk about the rebrand and the anniversary events.  We sampled their newly-packaged Homestand Pilsner while planning out our month for maximum enjoyment.  The impetus for the change was a desire to move forward while reconnecting with their Atlanta roots.  There are big changes to the beer but with the same branding many people have their opinions set and may pass over new offerings.  With the change to Atlanta Brewing Company, the team hopes the retro-modern packaging will help beer drinkers take notice once again.
