Silently it waited in a woodland glen, baited with dreams to tempt… the strange lost company that time had forgot. The Elf-Trap by Francis Stevens. That's next on The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast. There's a good chance you've never heard of Francis Stevens. But after today's story you will probably never forget her. She has been called “the woman who invented dark fantasy.” She was born Gertrude Mabel Barrows in Minneapolis Minnesota in 1883. Some say her middle name was Myrtle instead of Mabel but since the state of Minnesota and the county where she was born don't have birth records going back that far we will never know. She wrote her first short story at age 17, a science fiction story titled The Curious Experience of Thomas Dunbar. She mailed the story to Argosy. The story was accepted and published in the March 1904 issue, listing the author as "G. M. Barrows”. Although the initials disguised her gender, this appears to be the first instance of an American female author publishing science fiction, and using her real name. She had only seven short stories published and wrote five novels, with just two released during her lifetime. From Argosy magazine in July 1919, The Elf-Trap by Francis Stevens…Next on The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast, The punishment had to fit more than just the crime—it had to suit every world in the Galaxy! Read and enjoyed by millions, pulp magazines reached their zenith in the 1930s, though the genre began in earnest in 1896 with The Argosy, a monthly magazine that was printed on low-cost pulp paper. The genre is characterized by its action-packed stories, often featuring stereotypical characters. The term "pulp" comes from the cheap, low-quality wood pulp paper used to print the magazines. — read by 'N' — Sign up for Snoozecast+ to get expanded, ad-free access by going to snoozecast.com/plus! fWotD Episode 2590: Munsey's Magazine Welcome to featured Wiki of the Day where we read the summary of the featured Wikipedia article every day.The featured article for Friday, 7 June 2024 is Munsey's Magazine.Munsey's Magazine was an American magazine founded by Frank Munsey. Originally launched in 1889 as Munsey's Weekly, a humorous magazine, edited by John Kendrick Bangs, it was not successful, and by late 1891 had lost $100,000 ($3.39 million in 2023). Munsey converted it to a general illustrated monthly in October of that year, retitled Munsey's Magazine and priced at twenty-five cents ($8.48 in 2023). Richard Titherington became the editor, and remained in that role for the rest of the magazine's existence. In 1893 Munsey reduced the price to ten cents ($3.39 in 2023): this brought him into conflict with the American News Company, which had a near-monopoly on magazine distribution, as they were unwilling to handle the magazine at the cost Munsey proposed. Munsey started his own distribution company and was quickly successful: the first issue at ten cents began with a print run of 20,000 copies but eventually sold 60,000, and within a year circulation had risen to over a quarter of a million issues.Munsey's Magazine included both fiction and non-fiction departments on topics such as art, music, and the theatre, and about famous people. In 1893 Munsey became one of the first publishers to regularly put a picture of a pretty girl on the cover, and circulation was also helped by the liberal use of illustrations. During the mid-1890s Munsey's often included images of nude and semi-nude women, though this became less common later in the decade. Circulation reached a peak of about 700,000 in 1897, and fluctuated thereafter until the 1910s, when it began to decline. It became a fiction-only magazine in 1921. Many well-known writers appeared in its pages, including O. Henry, H. Rider Haggard, Arthur Conan Doyle, Bret Harte, Max Brand, Edgar Rice Burroughs, P. G. Wodehouse, Joseph Conrad, and Ella Wheeler Wilcox. By 1924 circulation was only 64,000. In 1929 it was merged with Argosy, another of Munsey's magazines. The change from a price of twenty-five cents to ten cents is considered by magazine historians to be the start of a revolution in magazine publishing. Before 1893, the bulk of most magazines' income came from the sale of subscriptions, though advertising was another source of income. Munsey's Magazine showed that it was possible to set a low price in order to increase circulation, and attract sufficient advertising revenue to make a substantial profit. Other magazines, notably McClure's and Cosmopolitan, quickly followed Munsey's example, but it was not until 1904 that another magazine, Everybody's, managed to outstrip Munsey's circulation, reaching a figure of almost a million. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 01:19 UTC on Friday, 7 June 2024.For the full current version of the article, see Munsey's Magazine on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm Danielle Neural.

fWotD Episode 2514: Argosy (magazine) Welcome to featured Wiki of the Day where we read the summary of the featured Wikipedia article every day.The featured article for Saturday, 23 March 2024 is Argosy (magazine).Argosy was an American magazine, founded in 1882 as The Golden Argosy, a children's weekly, edited by Frank Munsey and published by E. G. Rideout. Munsey took over as publisher when Rideout went bankrupt in 1883, and after many struggles made the magazine profitable. He shortened the title to The Argosy in 1888 and targeted an audience of men and boys with adventure stories. In 1894 he switched it to a monthly schedule and in 1896 he eliminated all non-fiction and started using cheap pulp paper, making it the first pulp magazine. Circulation had reached half a million by 1907, and remained strong until the 1930s. The name was changed to Argosy All-Story Weekly in 1920 after the magazine merged with All-Story Weekly, another Munsey pulp, and from 1929 it became just Argosy. In 1925 Munsey died, and the publisher, the Frank A. Munsey Company, was purchased by William Dewart, who had worked for Munsey. By 1942 circulation had fallen to no more than 50,000, and after a failed effort to revive the magazine by including sensational non-fiction, it was sold that year to Popular Publications, another pulp magazine publisher. Popular converted it from pulp to slick format, and initially attempted to make it a fiction-only magazine, but gave up on this within a year. Instead it became a men's magazine, carrying fiction and feature articles aimed at men. Circulation soared and by the early 1950s was well over one million.Early contributors included Horatio Alger, Oliver Optic, and G. A. Henty. During the pulp era, many famous writers appeared in Argosy, including O. Henry, James Branch Cabell, Albert Payson Terhune, Edgar Rice Burroughs, Erle Stanley Gardner, Robert E. Howard, and Max Brand. Argosy was regarded as one of the most prestigious publications in the pulp market, along with Blue Book, Adventure and Short Stories. After the transition to slick format it continued to publish fiction, including science fiction by Robert Heinlein, Arthur Clarke, and Ray Bradbury. From 1948 to 1958 it published a series by Gardner called "The Court of Last Resort" which examined the cases of dozens of convicts who maintained their innocence, and succeeding in overturning many of the convictions. NBC adapted the series for television in 1957.Popular sold the magazine to David Geller in 1972, and in 1978 Geller sold it to the Filipacchi Group, which closed down the magazine at the end of the year. The title has been revived several times, most recently in 2016.This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 01:09 UTC on Saturday, 23 March 2024.For the full current version of the article, see Argosy (magazine) on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm Arthur Neural.

Argosy Minerals Limited (ASX:AGY, OTC:ARYMF) Managing Director Jerko Zuvela speaks to Thomas Warner from Proactive after the Australian lithium project developer released a progress update for its flagship Rincon Lithium Project located within Argentina's Salta province. He explains that Argosy Minerals is in the process of building a 2,000-tonne per annum facility to produce lithium carbonate, with plans to expand operations by an additional 10,000 tonnes annually. Since initiating the project in 2016, the company has emphasised its focus on chemical processing over mining, extracting brine from the Salt Lake to produce battery-quality lithium carbonate. Despite facing challenges with lithium prices and regulatory approvals, Zuvela believes Argosy has made significant strides in the past two and a half years. The company's recent announcement highlights the nearing of completion at the 2,000-tonne facility and their ongoing efforts to secure regulatory approval and financing for the 10,000-tonne expansion. He concludes by saying that lithium prices are currently at a supportive level for the project and that the "fact we're getting close to getting regulatory approval for the 10,000-tonne expansion is a big positive...hopefully we can move down that path of securing the financing arrangements and strategic partnerships we've been working on to make that happen." #ArgosyMinerals #JerkoZuvela #LithiumProject #RincónArgentina #BatteryQualityLithium #ChemicalProcessing #SaltLakeExtraction #LithiumCarbonateProduction #MiningIndustry #BatteryTech #RegulatoryApproval #InvestmentNews #LithiumMarket #SaltaProvince #BatteryInnovation #ProactiveInvestors #Argosy #lithium #invest #investing #investment #investor #stockmarket #stocks #stock #stockmarketnews

Today was a show for the lithium faithful with news from corners of the world. American chemicals company Albemarle came in (again) for Liontown (LTR), this time tabling a $3 per share takeover bid which appears to have finally won over the LTR board. More details emerged regarding the hunt for Bald Hill (Alita Resources), with the rumour mill flying and administrators + receivers not seeing eye-to-eye. The drama continued with Leo Lithium (LLL) emerging from a roughly 2 month suspension and down 50% to boot. The market clearly didn't take a liking to the cancelling of the DSO, potential changes in ownership (regarding Mali's new mining code) as well as a potential tax/import duty bill. Argosy (AGY) shared an update on its Argentinian Rincon project as well as Hastings (HAS) changing CEO's, to round of a full day of news! All Money of Mine episodes are for informational purposes only and may contain forward-looking statements that may not eventuate. On July 2 1960, KCBS Radio broadcast a special report on the mysterious disappearance of pioneering aviatrix Amelia Earhart. She and navigator Fred Noonan had disappeared over the South Pacific in July 1937 in one of the 20th Century's enduring mysteries. This special report, sponsored by Shell Oil, was introduced by KCBS Radio news director Don Mozley and featured the work of reporter Fred Goerner. Goerner was convinced Earhart and Noonan had survived the crash of their plane but then died in Japanese custody. On that day in 1960, he showed off some airplane parts he'd brought up from the harbor on Saipan. A year later, he made another trip and brought back human remains he believed might have been those of Earhart and Noonan (later analysis by a University of California anthropologist dashed cold water on that belief). Goerner made a third trip to Saipan on his own time and money, published a lengthy account in Argosy magazine in 1964, and then a best-selling book in 1966 (The Search for Amelia Earhart). The photo accompanying this episode was taken the day before this broadcast, on July 1 1960, in KCBS Radio's Studio B at the Palace Hotel. Goerner (R) sat next to Don Mozley and told San Francisco reporters who'd been called to the studio of his findings.

Today on The Neil Haley Show, The Total Tutor Neil Haley will interview Jan Harzan of MUFON. Jan recently retired from IBM after 37 years in the Information Technology business. Jan's interest in UFOs began at the age of 8 when he read an article on Donald Keyhoe and NICAP in Argosy magazine. Based on this and other research he and his brother did over the next two years, they made the decision to build a flying saucer believing that electromagnetic propulsion was the key to how these craft were able to travel such great distances. While in the process of doing this, they were visited by a real UFO, no more than thirty feet from them, with no visible means of propulsion other than making a humming noise, before shooting off over the horizon. This event profoundly changed their lives. As a result of this experience, Jan pursued finding the answer to the technology these craft display believing that a breakthrough would revolutionize transportation and energy on our planet. As part of his drive to find the answer, Jan attended UCLA School of Engineering and received his B.S. in Nuclear Engineering. After college, he was hired by IBM, thinking that only a company of IBM's stature and funding in basic research could solve this problem. 37 years later, Jan is still looking for the answer to how all this works. As a member of the MUFON Business Board Jan has been instrumental in leading MUFON's Strategic Planning, as well as creating the Case Management System (CMS) used for UFO reporting, tracking, and investigative follow-up. Jan currently resides in Newport Beach, California, with his wife, Annette, and their two children. Jan was named Executive Director of MUFON on August 1, 2013. www.ufocruise.com

On Thursday June 26th, 2014 the Hermetic Hour with host Poke Runyon will present a discussion on the magical aspects of Abraham Merritt's (1884 - 1943) novels and stories of exotic fantasy adventure. Merritt was a highly respected journalist who wrote his colorful tales of the occult and the bizarre for his own pleasure and not as pot-boilers for the pulps even though ARGOSY and other pulps were his main outlet. His work had the quality of literature and the mytho-folkloric erudition of a Robert Graves. Merritt had a library of over 5000 books on myth, folklore and the occult. His tales of lost cities, ancient secret cults and strange other-worldly phenomenon are unparalleled in beauty and imagination. His "People of the Pit" (1917) was a profound influence on H.P. Lovecraft and his masterpiece "The Ship of Ishtar" (1924) described Richard Shaver's inter-dimensional "Simultane" concept. (It was also the template for our path-working soul-travel boat.) His "Dwellers in the Mirage"(1932) was an inspiration for my sc-fi novel "Drell Master." Merritt was steeped in Blavatsky's Atlantis and Lemuria lore and the obscure legendary sources behind these lost civilizations. His "The Moon Pool" (1921) lured us out to the ruins of Lemuria in the Pacific (see Beyond Lemuria). So, if you want to spend an hour with the Dream-maker, tune and we'll set sail to evening Isles fantastical.
