Next Saturday, August 17th, the Huskies are expected to host a mock game following the annual "Raise The Woof" event, but that didn't stop the coaches from scheduling a scrimmage the week before that mirrored a game with the way they set things up. The guys from Dawgman -- Kim Grinolds and Chris Fetters -- were there and they shared their thoughts on what they saw in their post-practice podcast. They began by giving an overview of what they saw, including how many plays (150) that were run in the two-and-a-half hour practice. They discussed the progress of the offense, especially the offensive line, and what it meant to have Landen Hatchett back running with the first team for the first time in 2024. They also talked about the the tailbacks and the work that Jonah Coleman and Cameron Davis got in, but also gave props to Adam Mohammed and Daniyel Ngata who both took a bulk of the carries when the team went with their "live" tackling. Another area of focus was the secondary and the depth that Washington is experiencing thus far in camp. They talked about the competition at the EDGE spot and mentioned that head coach Jedd Fisch gave a lot of kudos to Jayden Wayne and how he's progressed the past couple of weeks as the team is getting deeper into fall camp. They also said that Zach Durfee made an impact and how the first year head coach said that he was a difference-maker up front for the Huskies. They also broke down what they saw from each of the other position groups and who stood out during the practice. The guys from Dawgman.com - Kim Grinolds and Chris Fetters - were joined by former intern Jack McCauley and current intern Harlan Grady to form a quorum and put their thoughts down after a spirited Day 11 of spring football inside the Dempsey Indoor Facility. For the most part, the talk in the first half was about the offensive standouts, especially with there being some live football the coaches sprinkled in during practice to keep things interesting. Kim's player of the day was Rashid Williams, and the redshirt freshman from the Bay Area certainly made some strong plays. In fact, the whole receiving corps looked rock solid going up against some really good defensive backs, and that competition was something to watch all day long. The talk also turned to the running backs, as the media was able to talk to new RB Coach Scottie Graham, as well as running backs Cameron Davis and Jonah Coleman. The guys talked about them, as well as true freshman Adam Mohammed, who has become one of the real spring surprises. After a quick break, there was some hoops news Kim wanted to get to, as Danny Sprinkle picked up his second guard from the portal and third overall ahead of the 2024-25 season in former UC-Irvine and Butler guard D.J. Davis. The guys talk about what Davis should bring to the mix and Kim hints at the next steps for Sprinkle and company as they continue to remake the roster. Coach Jedd Fisch and the Washington Huskies officially start spring practice on Wednesday and after making the national championship in January, the Huskies have a lot of questions to answer. Even though the Huskies have some promising veterans on the roster like Will Rogers, Jeremiah Hunter, Jonah Coleman, Cameron Davis, and Carson Bruener there are still plenty of spots to fill, and not just on the offensive line, as players like Keith Reynolds, Audric Harris, Isaiah Ward, Russell Davis and more are looking to make a name for themselves during spring practice. The guys from Dawgman.com - Kim Grinolds, Chris Fetters, and Scott Eklund - were at Husky Stadium today to watch their eighth and final practice of fall camp. And with it being Day 17 overall of fall camp, things are definitely winding down. With 10 days until UW lines up against Boise State on September 2, it's now all about fine-tuning and winnowing down the options on both sides of the ball and special teams to get to what will give them the best chance to beat the Broncos. To that end, there were a lot of scout team periods, working on details during individual periods, and thud tempo with no tackling allowed during a practice that saw the Huskies in shoulder pads and shorts. With the news that Cameron Davis and Gaard Memmelaar are missing 2023 with season-ending injuries, it was good to see a couple of other players who hadn't been at practice for a while - Tybo Rogers and Diesel Gordon - were back and practicing with the team. The Dawgman guys focused on the nature of practice, how it felt like it was more focus than fire compared to previous practices, and especially what the Huskies are going to do at the running back position. They also broke down how the reserve offensive line looked with Memmelaar now out, and also what some of the defensive players and coaches said after the practice. Elijah Jackson has landed the other cornerback spot opposite Jabbar Muhammad, and Sekai Asoau-Afoa has been getting looks with the number one EDGE unit along with Bralen Trice and Zion Tupuola-Fetui. They also spoke with Special Teams Coordinator Eric Schmidt, who gave a full breakdown on the kicking battle between Grady Gross and Addison Shrock, as well as who would line up at punt and kick return now that Giles Jackson has been limited and Cameron Davis is no longer available. The guys then give their final thoughts and there's also some more talk about Jen Cohen's move to USC and also a frustrating end to Washington's European Hoops trip. The Dawgman interns - Jack McCauley and Intern Emeritus Luke Mounger - are back with their own spin on how the Washington Huskies will do in 2023, and they are going to break down a number of the position groups. Today they tackle the running backs room, one that is losing a lot of production with Wayne Taulapapa's graduation, but they also have some veterans returning with Cameron Davis and Richard Newton, as well as a number of transfers. Will Nixon moved last year from Nebraska, and UW picked up two more transfers in Daniyel Ngata from Arizona State and Dillon Johnson from Mississippi State. Jack and Luke start with the recent transfers and what they should bring to the mix, and then work their way toward the backs already on the roster. Then the guys talk about some of the other newer additions, starting with true freshman Tybo Rogers. Without knowing the specifics of Rogers' situation and why he isn't practicing right now with the Huskies, both Jack and Luke proceed like he will be available for UW once the season starts. Will he play more than four games in 2023? How will the coaches like to use him? And what about sophomore Sam Adams? After giving their initial thoughts on the players they expect to play this fall, they go more in-depth on how they think the room as a whole will be used. Will the coaches try and find a 1000-yard rusher? Will they go more by committee? Will they be transparent when looking to spring their running backs in the passing game? And how much will pass protection factor into playing time? To finish up the podcast, Jack and Luke create their own pecking order and expectations for this year compared to last season. The Washington Huskies took the field for their first day of fall camp under sunny skies and 70 degree temps. The guys from Dawgman.com were there and following the two-hour practice, they sat down to put a bow on what they saw. They discussed how efficient the offense looked and how Michael Penix Jr. looked like he was in mid-season form. Following that, they took a look at the tailbacks and discussed the battle between Cameron Davis, Dillon Johnson, Will Nixon, Sam Adams, Daniyel Ngata and Tybo Rogers and who looks like the most-ready to take over for Wayne Taulapapa. Johnson was getting his first significant reps since arriving in the spring. He definitely looks the part, but two of the guys felt that Davis had set himself apart from the rest and is the clear favorite to start at the tailback position. They then turned their attention to the wide receiver group and discussed how players like Germie Bernard and Denzel Boston would likely be starting at several programs in the country, but both are likely to see limited targets this fall with Rome Odunze, Jalen McMillan and Ja'Lynn Polk demanding a lot of attention. Throw in three talented freshmen and the Huskies are in great shape for the forseeable future in the receiver corps. Moving over to the defensive side of the ball, the guys talked about the move of Voi Tunuufi to EDGE and how he looked along with the rest of the room, including Bralen Trice and Zion Tupuola-Fetui, Lance Holtzclaw and Milton Hopkins Jr. They also looked at the depth along the defensive line and linebacker and gave an early look at the secondary where Elijah Jackson and Jabbar Muhammad look to be the leading candidates to man the corner spots once the season gets underway in September. DawgmanRadio: Reviewing The Running Backs After Spring Football

Dawgman Radio

Now that spring ball has concluded, it's time to look back at what we saw during the 15 practices, looking in-depth at each position group. Today, the guys from Dawgman -- Kim Grinolds and Scott Eklund -- take a look at the running backs. Washington lost a good one in Wayne Taulapapa following the 2022 season, but luckily they do return the man who shared carries with him, Cameron Davis. Davis looked the part of a starting tailback during the spring and he seems firmly entrenched as the starter heading into the second half of the offseason, but make no mistake, with players like Dillon Johnson, Daniyel Ngata, Richard Newton, Sam Adams, Aaron Dumas, Will Nixon and Tybo Rogers, he'll be challenged all the way up until Washington's first game against Boise State on September 2nd. Ngata, a transfer from Arizona State, has shown some flashes, but some nagging injuries kept him in a yellow jersey for much of the spring. Johnson was very much in the same boat, showing up for the second half of spring, but only taking part in two or three practices before suffering an injury that kept him on the sidelines and doing rehab for the final two weeks of camp. The guys focused on the depth chart heading into the second half of the offseason and also talked about some of the youngsters who are just now starting to get the opportunity to show what they can do. In addition to Davis' exploits, both felt that Nixon and Adams had very good springs and talked about how the coaches have raved about their positive contributions. They also noted that Rogers looks like he could be a gamebreaker very early in his Husky career. Coming out of Bakersfield High School, the 5'11", 200 pounder struggled with some injuries, but he is back to full health and showed his explosiveness several times during the spring. Could Rogers make himself valuable enough to the 2023 team to burn his redshirt? The answer to that is still to be determined. DawgmanRadio: Wrapping Up Washington's Spring Preview

Washington wrapped up their spring practices on Saturday with their annual "Spring Preview" which featured an 89-play scrimmage and some big plays on both sides of the ball. Eventually, the offense eeked out a 35-34 win over the defense in front of roughly 4-5,000 fans in the stands The guys from Dawgman.com -- Kim Grinolds and Scott Eklund -- sat down afterwards to unpack what they saw and also give a relatively brief overview (a more intense one will take place at some point next week) of spring football and which players caught their eyes during the 15 practices. They discussed Michael Penix Jr.'s day and discussed that he was always a bit off throughout the spring. Not to diminish what he was able to do, but helping people to understand that, much like last spring, the Heisman candidate didn't blow anyone away with his performance. That happened during the season. Grinolds made the point that Cameron Davis appears to have separated himself, at least right now, from the rest of the pack in the tailback room. On Saturday, Davis ran hard, totaling 51 yards and two touchdowns on 12 carries while Sam Adams, Tybo Rogers and Aaron Dumas each had their moments as well. As good as Washington's receiver room is, Denzel Boston has been one of the standouts of camp and the coaches have raved about his progress. During Saturday's game, the second-year wideout took a quick snap and ran it in from six yards out. As good as the play looked, especially when you consider the timing needed as he was coming in motion and took the direct snap from backup center Landen Hatchett, we found out later, both from Kalen DeBoer and Boston himself, that the play was actually a mistake. Along the offensive line, we saw the Huskies ride the quintet of Troy Fautanu (LT), Julius Buelow (LG), Matteo Mele (C), Nate Kalepo (RG) and Roger Rosengarten (RT) through all of spring and DeBoer said afterwards that those were the five they were going with right now, but they are not so far and away better than some of the backups, namely Geirean Hatchett and Parker Brailsford, that the competition was over for the starting spots. Turning the page to the defense, the guys discussed the progress of the cornerbacks, namely Elijah Jackson and the coaches being so effusive in their praise of the third-year corner. They also talked about the interceptions made by Jaivion Green and Jackson as well as the contributions of Jabbar Muhammad and Thaddeus Dixon, each of whom is in the mix for the starting two corner spots. The wrapped things up by talking about some of the former players they saw on the sidelines, including Alex Cook, Levi Onwuzurike, Michael Jackson and current Seattle mayor Bruce Harrell as well as a large group of recruits including QB Austin Mack, OL Elishah Jackett, DBs Dyson Dixson and Dijon Lee, OL Paki Finau and tailback Karson Cox among others. Day 13 of spring football was held inside the Dempsey Indoor Facility and things got a little wild about two thirds of the way through practice. The guys from Dawgman.com -- Kim Grinolds and Scott Eklund -- sat down and talked about what they saw during the two-hour workout and what stood out to them in the final open practice before the Spring Preview which is this Saturday. To start things off, the defense definitely appeared to get the better of the offense for most of practice, aside from a big play early on -- a trick play that saw wideout Jalen McMillan throw a long touchdown pass to fellow receiver Rome Odunze -- and one a little later when tight end Quentin Moore, who was well-covered, went up and hauled in a 25-yard touchdown from Michael Penix Jr. However, as the practice moved along, things got a bit on the chippy side with players on both sides pushing and shoving and even throwing some punches. Cooler heads prevailed, but Eklund and Grinolds talked a lot about who was involved and what happened. The rest of their time was spent recapping what the offensive coaches and players told them following practice, including offensive line coach Scott Huff who feels he has some versatile players who could play anywhere along the offensive line. He also spoke about the progress of both Parker Brailsford and Landen Hatchett and what has allowed Julius Buelow to take back a starting job along the offensive line at one of the guard spots. Tailbacks coach Lee Marks talked about the progress of the tailbacks and while he will miss Wayne Taulapapa's outstanding pass-blocking abilities, he feels good about where things are at with Cameron Davis and a few of the other tailbacks in the room. They also asked about what makes freshman Tybo Rogers so good and if he is a player who could burn his redshirt this season. Lastly, they discussed offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb and his comments on the difference between Penix at this time last year and now as well as the progress of the tight ends room and where things currently stand with that group. The guys from Dawgman.com - Kim Grinolds, Chris Fetters, and Scott Eklund - dealt with some technical difficulties, a power outage, and ghosts in the machine to put together an Apple Cup pregame show. It sounded at times like it was put together 114 years ago in the middle of the Palouse instead of today, but the guys got their points across and they beg your forgiveness. To start, they talk a little bit about WSU Head Coach Jake Dickert and how a defensive coach is a bit of a change from Mike Leach and the Air Raid attack where it was all passing all the time. Then they go into Washington State's offense, talk some about their quarterback - Cameron Ward - as well as the skill players around Ward that will try and exploit Washington's defense. Talk then turned to Washington's offense and what they're going to try to do to score against Washington State's defense. A couple of the guys think that WSU's defense is a little overrated, despite leading the Pac-12 in scoring defense. The guys also talk about what they expect the Cougars to do to put some pressure on Michael Penix Jr., and how the Huskies will counter those moves, as well as if WSU will try and take certain receivers away, like Colorado did with Rome Odunze. Would that fundamentally change things, or is that just a matter of picking your poison against a deep and talented UW receiving corps? After a break, the guys move to some talk of the Washington running backs room and how important they will be in terms of setting the tone offensively for UW and how they need to be effective and productive when the Cougars try and sit back to lull Penix into a false sense of security. And could there be more backs involved tonight than just Wayne Taulapapa and Cameron Davis? Scott provides a quick recruiting update, and Kim and Chris offer up their two cents' worth on UW Hoops after their 4-point win over Saint Mary's on Thanksgiving night to win the Paycom Wooden Legacy Championship, as well as their final thoughts on what they expect to see tonight on the Palouse. The guys from Dawgman.com - Kim Grinolds, Chris Fetters, and Scott Eklund - got together ahead of the Arizona-Washington game to break down the main storylines, but it's hard to get past the biggest one of all; these defenses are bad. To start the show, they talked about how Arizona should attack a wounded UW defense, licking their wounds and trying to limp through the next two games before a much-needed BYE week shows up. They are especially banged up in the secondary, which makes the recent news of Cameron Williams redshirting all the more curious. They talk about that, as well as what we might expect to see from a defensive backfield that will unveil their seventh different lineup in as many weeks. They also talked about the defensive front and why UW had to rely on true freshman Jayvon Parker and what the future looks like in that position. But most importantly, they talked about Arizona quarterback Jayden de Laura and what Washington has to do in order to get him off his spot and behind the chains. After a quick break, that led them right into the main point in trying to limit de Laura; get out to a sizable lead, and force de Laura into situations where he needs to push the ball downfield. As it has been shown so far this season, when he feels like he's got to get the 'Cats back in the game, that's when he can make mistakes when extending plays. The guys also talk about the interesting decision by Arizona Head Coach Jedd Fisch to hire former Washington, USC, and UCLA assistant coach Johnny Nansen to be his defensive coordinator. And with Arizona's run defense statistically one of the worst in all of college football, the UW offensive game plan seems clear; run, run, run, and then let Michael Penix Jr. play-action off of those runs. But who will be UW's leading ballcarrier? Wayne Taulapapa? Cameron Davis? Richard Newton? Will Nixon? Sam Adams? It will be interesting to see who emerges, and it may be more than one. They also talk about the role the tight ends could play in a game plan like this, and also delve into an important question about game mechanics; if UW wins the toss, should they take the ball? This may be one of the few games where going on the offensive from the start is the right tactic to take. The guys from Dawgman.com - Chris Fetters and Scott Eklund - broke down the main storylines heading into Washington's Homecoming game versus Arizona. After their UCLA loss, the sense was one of being hurt, but after losing to Arizona State in Tempe this past Saturday, the vibe seemed to be more of the 'pissed off' variety. The defense is struggling to get off the field right now in a big way, but the coaches have been pleased and impressed with how the players have responded week after week, regardless of the result. They continue to practice hard and fix problems. Against UCLA they struggled to tackle effectively; their Pro Football Focus tackling grade at ASU was 90.0. That's an improvement. Now they'll have to fix their third down woes against an Arizona team that is top 25 nationally in third down percentage on offense. The guys talked first about some of the main talking points when Head Coach Kalen DeBoer, Offensive Coordinator Ryan Grubb, and Co-Defensive Coordinator Chuck Morrell met with the media, including a deep dive into some of the key plays and moments in UW's loss to ASU. After a quick break, the guys talk about their conversations with the UW players they spoke with this week - Cameron Davis, Rome Odunze, Bralen Trice, Cam Bright, and Alex Cook - with specific reference to the main storylines heading into Saturday's game versus Arizona. UA quarterback Jayden de Laura planted the WSU flag at midfield after their Apple Cup win last season, and that is certainly something that is on the players' minds, even if the only current UW coach that experienced that game was Scott Huff. And there are certainly other UA skill players that Washington will have to focus on, including pass-catchers Jacob Cowing, Dorian Singer, Tetairoa McMillan, and Tanner McLachlan. After another quick break, it was time to talk about the chats with the media and the other UW coaches they spoke with - Huff, JaMarcus Shephard, Eric Schmidt, and Julius Brown. There was plenty of talk about getting off the field on third down, how the combination of Troy Fautanu and Jaxson Kirkland on the left side of the offensive line is working out, how that might help UW this weekend against an anemic Arizona run defense, and more - including the guys' final thoughts.
