Do you remember the Seinfeld ‘car reservation' episode? It's one of the best. Jerry gets to the car rental counter and they don't have a car for him. He says “See you know how to take a reservation, you just don't know how to hold the reservation. And that's really the most important part of the reservation, the holding!” That's what we're talking about today because you might know how to get out of debt, but do you know how to stay out of debt? You might find yourself digging out of debt every year when January rolls around. Holiday spending has a habit of sneaking up on most folks and you might be dealing with that financial hangover right now. Listen as we tackle concepts like lifestyle inflation, stoicism, accountability, and other practices that will allow us to kick debt to the curb for good. Having a glass of wine most days can be a healthy activity that we incorporate into our lives. Many studies have concluded that the moderate consumption of wine doesn't have negative long-term effects while simultaneously it could be beneficial in providing antioxidants as well as protecting against heart disease and inflammation. But, if that habit goes unchecked it could take on a tyrannical component in our lives if we're not careful, and it could lead to severe consequences. The same is true with our money. And so on the show today we are de-emphasizing something that is at the very core of our show! We believe that money is a helpful and necessary tool, but we also believe that beyond a certain point, more money isn't going to solve all of our problems. And in fact, money is only one component of our overall health and happiness levels. So during this episode we cover the struggle between achieving financial health and many of the other different facets of overall health like our physical, mental, social, and spiritual aspects as well. Randomly ask any of your friends how often they check their phone, and most will probably say something like 20-30 times, maybe 50 times a day. Yet stats show that ⅔ of Americans unlock their phone over 160 times a day. Luckily screen time and other similar apps can help us to understand that there is a big difference between what we think that we're doing and what we're actually doing. As humans we're not the most rational and self-aware beings. We often believe that we're incredibly objective but it probably depends more on the day of the week, how hungry we are, and who we're talking with. But we believe that by understanding and naming some different behavioral science and economic terms, that we can better realize our tendency to make irrational gut reactions and think differently about how and why we make decisions in the first place. To DIY or not to DIY… you can almost hear that being said in the voice of Hamlet (the Kenneth Branagh Hamlet not the Mel Gibson one, of course.) But while this question is not nearly as existential as the one Hamlet poses, it's one that we all increasingly find ourselves asking. On one hand you DIY everything in order to save as much money as possible and in the process you also gain a tremendous amount of knowledge- but do you have enough time to live your life? And on the other hand you outsource and hire a pro as often as you can and for the most part you know that the job is being expertly performed by a professional- but do you have enough money to live your life? So we're establishing a helpful framework for you to make better decisions in today's episode. We're focusing on better decisions because there isn't going to be a right or wrong answer. That's up to us as individuals and our own specific situations, but we can all go about asking ourselves the right questions when it comes to whether we should DIY or hire a pro. Getting Your Money Etiquette Right #422

Joel doesn't like to eat at fancy restaurants- not only because paying a ton of money isn't his jam, but also because there are all these rules of etiquette that fine diners are just supposed to know. What's he going to do with that 3rd fork anyways?! The same is often true when it comes to our money and the social situations we find ourselves in. Splitting the bill with friends when we go out- what should we keep in mind there? How should we talk about money with our co-workers, friends, and family? When you're on a date, who pays for what and how quickly should you dive into money conversations with someone you're serious about? And because we're all unique individuals, we argue that there are no hard and fast rules that dictate our actions when it comes to our money. Instead there is a lot of nuance and it takes a lot of emotional intelligence in order to get your money etiquette right. It's not always clear what path we should take and so during the episode we provide a helpful framework to help you decide. And we also share our thoughts on some common scenarios so that we can all avoid that awkward tension that might arise. During this episode we both enjoyed Paranormal Electricity of Trans-Pacific Airwaves IPA by Burial! And please help us to spread the word by letting friends and family know about How to Money! If you're considering taking those medications you'll have to seriously consider whether or not it's going to be worth it for you. And we believe similar considerations need to be given when it comes to gig work. On the surface gig jobs seem like they could provide you with all that you're looking for- flexibility, income, autonomy!
