The Blue Jays leave home having swept the powerful Padres in three games to complete a 5-4 homestand and now play six, in Tampa (3) and Texas (3). This week's Exit Philosophy has Griff and Mal weighing in on the big sports story of the moment in Toronto, the Maple Leafs and their parting of ways with president Brendan Shanahan. Are there comparisons with the Jays organization and should Shanahan have been given a media platform on the way out the door. Griff describes a similar situation in the ‘90s with fired manager Buck Rodgers. Is this the moment for the Jays with six primary outfielders, to give a banged-up Anthony Santander 10 IL days to get healthy and regroup? The Jays bullpen has stepped up and is as deep as anyone can remember…except for some blips on the Jeff Hoffman radar. Do they keep him in the closer role? A look at how good MLB teams with slow starts have bounced back and how that reflects on the Jays. Episode 291 features Will Bardenwerper, author of Homestand: Small Town Baseball and the Fight for the Soul of America and Nate Corbitt, founder of Nate's Smokehouse BBQ Blends Will Bardenwerper has contributed to The New York Times, The Washington Post, and Harper's Magazine. He served as an Airborne Ranger-qualified infantry officer in Iraq and was awarded a Combat Infantryman Badge and Bronze Star. Homestand: Small Town Baseball and the Fight for the Soul of America reflects the time Will spent in Batavia, New York, as he got to know the community and experience their love of baseball. Since 1897, the Batavia Muckdogs ruled the summer nights of this small town and in 2020 when Major League Baseball shut them down as they did with the minor league teams in 41 other towns, this town did something about it. They brought in a summer league team composed of college players. All this and more fills the pages as we get to know the people and the game of baseball in Batavia. Nate Corbitt is the founder of Nate's Smokehouse BBQ Blends; maker of premium seasonings designed with all natural ingredients. In 2020, Nate started experimenting with various spice combinations to go along with his passion for smoking meats and his love for bold and unique flavors. He then shared the spice blends with friends and family who encouraged Nate to do something more with these blends and that is exactly what Nate did as he started, Nate's Smokehouse BBQ Blends. In addition to his love of barbecue, Nate is also a baseball lover, especially for his beloved, Chicago Cubs. Salk wonders what the main cause of the Mariners tough homestand was: injuries, or offensive regression? The show also goes Around The NFL with headlines from the Steelers, Caleb Williams, the Bengals and Giants. In Blue 88, topics include dual threat QB packages, a similarity between the Seahawks and Giants and Riq Woolen.
SF Giants expert for FanSided, Jeff Young joins Bill Laskey to break down the Giants tough start to their homestand losing 2 of 3 vs Arizona, & Jordan Hicks' rocky status as the teams 5th starterSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Losing 5 of 6 didn't feel as disastrous as it normally would for the M's. They were in most of those games, they have reinforcements coming in Kirby and Gilbert, and they figured out what's going on with Bryce Miller. Then, we react to Pete Carroll's comments on what went down at the end of his tenure here.
Salk takes a look at the Mariners home runs, walks and strikeouts throughout the homestand, paired to the amount that they gave up in that time, and references it as to why he believes the Mariners struggled so much over the last week. Then, they re-air their conversation with Pete Carroll, who discusses his new chapter as the Raiders head coach, the end of his time in Seattle and plenty more.
Birmingham Barons GM Jonathan Nelson joined 3 Man Front on Tuesday to discuss some special events for the Barons' homestand against the Chattanooga Lookouts, including mustache night! See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
In small towns throughout America, neighbors have gathered on summer evenings at Minor League stadiums, clambering into seats with popcorn and cheap beer in hand. Many of these Minor League towns were former textile and railroad hubs, hit hard in recent years by various economic forces, yet baseball persisted. That is, until 2020, when Major League Baseball (MLB) drastically contracted the minors, shutting down 42 teams. In HOMESTAND: Small Town Baseball and the Fight for the Soul of America (Doubleday), journalist and veteran Will Bardenwerper looks at the impact of this decision and what it says about America's core values through the lens of one small town in upstate New York. This poignant memoir celebrates a working-class community that fought to keep their small baseball team alive. It's not just a story about America's pastime— it's a story about America, and where we go from here.WILL BARDENWERPER has contributed to The New York Times, The Washington Post, Harper's and other outlets and is the author The Prisoner in His Palace: Saddam Hussein, His American Guards, and What History Leaves Unsaid. He served as an Airborne Ranger–qualified infantry officer in Iraq and was awarded a Combat Infantryman Badge and Bronze Star. Before working in the Office of the Secretary of Defense, he received a B.A. from Princeton and M.A. from Johns Hopkins University. He will be available for interviews for pieces timed to publication, as would several of the memorable people who make up the Muckdog fanbase. For more info on the book click HERE
Will Bardenwerper grew up playing baseball and even was a member of his college team at Princeton. As a result, he has a great perspective to write about baseball as he does in Homestand: Small Town Baseball and the Fight for the Soul of America (Doubleday). That soul, in this book, is partially under attack from private equity firms gobbling up and eradicating minor league baseball teams. It's just one of the many threads of Will's wonderful book.Podcast Specific Substack at creativenonfictionpodcast.substrack.com.Pre-order The Front RunnerNewsletter: Rage Against the AlgorithmShow notes: brendanomeara.com

Matt Crawford speaks with author Will Bardenwerper about his book, Homestand: Small Town Baseball and the Fight for the Soul of America. What happens when a minor league team—the heart and soul of a Rust Belt town in western New York—is shut down by the billionaires who run Major League Baseball? Batavia, New York—between Rochester and Buffalo—hosted its first professional baseball game in 1897. Despite decades of deindustrialization and evaporating middle-class jobs, the Batavia Muckdogs endured. When Major League Baseball cravenly shut them down in 2020—along with forty-one other minor league teams—the town fought back, reviving the Muckdogs as a summer league team comprised of college players. As MLB considers further cuts and private equity buys up what remains, the mom-and-pop operations once prevalent in baseball are endangered. But for now, the sights and sounds of local baseball live on in Batavia—cheap draft beer and hot dogs, starry-eyed kids seeking autographs, and breathtaking summer sunsets. With a vibrant, unforgettable cast of characters—from a librarian and her best friend whose relationship deepens with every “crepuscular hour” they spend together in the bleachers, to the former hockey brawler-turned team owner who greets regulars while working the concession stand, to the iconoclastic writer with a contagious love for his struggling hometown—Bardenwerper's Homestand exposes the beating heart of small town America, friends and neighbors coming together as the crack of the bat echoes in the summer twilight.
