(26:58) Hoofdstuk 4: Passie of obsessie? (35:34) Hoofdstuk 5: Loslaten Over the one thing to fix. Over durven loslaten.

My guest today is Bart Weetjens. In the world of social entrepreneurship and change Bart is a well-known figure as he founded Apopo, an organisation that trains rats to detect landmines in countries around the world, from Mosambique to Cambodia. Bart is also an ordained Zen monk and has been practicing Zen for over 30 years. Today he lives again in his native Antwerp, facilitating Zen sessions and working as an executive coach. I first met Bart many years ago, when I was co-hosting a TEDx event in Hamburg and invited Bart to speak there. Since, we have met a number of times, recently in connection to the Wellbeing Project. This is a global project aimed to cultivate a culture of inner wellbeing for all social change makers. For this conversation we met online and spoke about Barts early path into Zen and meditation. How the practice has helped him overcome deep challenges as a young adult and accompanied him on his path as a social changemaker and now coach. For me as an interviewer our exchange was a beautiful experience. It felt to me as if Bart's inner composition was holding the space in which the conversation could unfold in a very easy and natural way.

See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

When Joy was 16-years old, she fell in love with Leslie. Back then, he smelled good. “He had a wonderful male musk smell,” she says. Dr. and Mrs. Leslie and Joy Milne were later married. Les became a consultant anesthetist and she was a nurse practitioner. Sixteen years later, his body odor changed – for the worse. He smelled off, overly musky and unpleasant. Joy even nudged him to wash more. Twelve years after that, he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. At their first support group meeting, Joy realized the other people with PD smelled just like Les. Bravely, Joy asked researcher Tilo Kunath why no one had researched the smell of Parkinson’s. Tilo was shocked. He had never heard anyone talk about an odor of the disease. Neither had anyone else. Six months after that encounter, a colleague told Tilo that many cancers have smells, which made him think Joy maybe on to something. Tilo teamed up with Perdita Barran, a professor of mass spectrometry at the University of Manchester, and started to test Joy’s super smeller. They discovered she was smelling sebum, an oily secretion on everyone’s skin that is over-produced in people with Parkinson’s disease. Next, they focused on the molecules within the sebum. “We found, if we compared the samples from people with Parkinson’s with the people without, there were significant differences.” Barren says they found 17 compounds that were different, “Of those, four were significantly different and they always varied in the same way.” Barren and Kunath used that information to create a model which allows them to test anyone’s sebum at any time and predict, with 90% accuracy, if that person has Parkinson’s. The novelty of “The woman who smells Parkinson’s” initially brought ridicule and doubt from others in the scientific community, but as more and more research is being conducted, supporters are coming out of the closet. Joy feels some vindication, but knows there’s more work to be done on convincing the medical community that diseases have distinct odors. “How do elephants in a tribe know an elephant is ill and they protect it? How does a wolf know who is in the pack and is ill? Animals smell when they are ill. Sharks do as well. They have a super sense of smell. We are sentient beings. So why are we not accepting of it?” There currently are no biological tests or measurable indicators for Parkinson’s disease. Diagnosis of PD is a subjective call by a neurologist based on medical history, symptoms, a physical examination and neurological tests. It is imperfect at best. The research around the smell of Parkinson’s is an exciting and promising approach to finding that elusive biomarker. Additionally, testing sebum levels is quick, easy, cheap and painless making it a great option for monitoring disease progression and medication effectiveness, especially for people in rural areas who rarely see their neurologist. Roger L. Martin has spent his career attacking models that don’t produce the desired results. I first became aware of Roger L. Martin’s work when I was the Global Head of Learning & Development for Diversey, Inc. My CEO at the time, a former Proctor & Gamble executive, taught me Roger’s cascading choices framework as a method for setting and maintaining strategy. He had first learned it from A.G. Lafley, the CEO of P&G. Later, Roger Martin partnered with A.G. Lafley to write Playing to Win: How Strategy Really Works. It is one of the books that I have most often recommended to others. With his deep expertise on strategic thinking, Roger has served on several boards, both for profit and non-profit. It was in his capacity as a board member for the Skoll Foundation that he began to think about the work of social entrepreneurs. Roger helped the Skoll Foundation to clearly define their audience and their mission. This led to the seminal article “Social Entrepreneurship: A Case for a Definition,” co-written with Sally Osberg, the CEO at Skoll. Eventually Sally and Roger expanded on these concepts and co-wrote Getting Beyond Better: How Social Entrepreneurship Works. In this episode of the Social Entrepreneur podcast, we discuss: How Roger came to be on the board of the Skoll Foundation. The difference between being a Director on the board of a commercial businesses vs. nonprofit boards. A definition of social entrepreneurship. Examples of social entrepreneurs. The difference between social entrepreneurs, social service providers and social advocates. The motivation of impact investors. Four stages of social entrepreneurship. Understand the world while balancing three tensions. Balance abhorrence and appreciation. The importance of balance between abhorring the status quo and appreciating why the status quo exists, and how it came to be. Balance apprenticeship and expertise. Balance experimentation and commitment. Envisage a dramatically better future which is a changed equilibrium. Build a model that makes the change happen. Scale the model. If I were going to predict the success of a social entrepreneur, I would ask them to explain why the current, unpleasant equilibrium exists. Understand the economics.
