Hear how when you allow life to unfold, you find that miracles happen I first interviewed Dr. Srikumar Rao in July 2023 and was so deeply inspired by the wisdoms he shared with us that I wanted to have him back so he could teach us more. And he does. The title of his new book is Modern Wisdom, Ancient Roots, in which he offers solid tools we can use to let go of the mental chatter that gets in the way of seeing what's possible. The universe is benevolent, Dr. Rao says, it's your friend, and when we understand this, that's when we can change our story and thus, the direction of our lives. Too often we get hung up on the doing, and we completely miss the fact that being is much more important than the doing. Allow life to unfold. And as you do, you find that miracles happen, and they happen on a regular basis. We never experience life the way it is. We always experience life according to the story we tell ourselves about it. When you change your thinking from the universe is indifferent to the universe is friendly, your experience of life has such a tremendous transformation. Open yourself up to possibilities. The universe is benevolent. The universe is your friend. Recognize that it's your friend. And the more you do this, the more signs you will get that it in fact is your friend. Your job in this life is to recognize who you really are and cast yourself free from this cage in which you have ensnared yourself. Trust yourself and recognize that the door to your prison is always open and unlocked. All you have to do is open the door and step out of it. Why does the universe give you stuff you don't want? Well, the universe doesn't give you what you want, but gives you exactly what you need for your learning and growth. We all have mental chatter. And the problem is not that you have mental chatter, the problem is you identify with your mental chatter. So sit back and observe your mental chatter. Observe yourself feeling worried. Observe yourself feeling anxious. And as you create that distance, you no longer have your mental chatter. You're the observer of the mental chatter. I'm Andi Simon. I'm your host and your guide. And as you know, this podcast is designed to help you get off the brink. The one thing we don't want you to do is get stuck or stalled. But you can begin to understand how you can change. And that's what we like to help people and their organizations do. So today, I have a wonderful gentleman here, and Doctor Rao did a podcast with us earlier, last July in fact, that was just a hit, but he's got a new book coming out. Actually, it's out and I have been reading it and you will love it. Let me tell you a little bit about Dr. Srikumar Rao. He is a creator of creativity and personal mastery. His bio doesn't fit a bio. It's a wonderful story about a life well-lived. He's a speaker, a former business school professor and head of The Rao Institute, and I urge you to take a look at that online because it's full of rich opportunities for you to begin to see, feel and think in new ways. And I use those words, but they mimic the words he uses. He is an executive coach to senior business executives, and he helps them find deeper meaning and engagement in their work. He also talks about the fact that work isn't work. And I love the idea because I love to work, and people say, when are you going to retire? I say, I'm never going to retire. Why is work bad? Because we define it as something that is not fun, but work isn't work. Work is something that gives us all kinds of things, purpose, meaning, joy. What could it do for you? My last thought today is to make sure that you understand Dr. Rao has programs and coaching that you can enjoy because they are joyful to help you begin to become the kind of person that you'd like to be. I'm going to call you Srikumar. Srikumar Rao: Works just fine. Andi Simon: Thank you for joining me again. It's really a pleasure. Srikumar Rao: It's my pleasure, Andi. I had such a blast the last time you interviewed me that I was positively looking forward to this session. Andi Simon: For our audience, watch out, here comes some really wonderful, wonderful stuff. Give the audience some context, though. Who are you? A man of your journey and why was this book? The book is called Modern Wisdom, Ancient Roots. Now when you buy an ebook, that's how I can show you the book. And I did buy a hard copy, but it isn't a hard copy. And as I'm reading it, I think you're going to find it wonderful. What is the context for this book and who are you? Why should they listen? Srikumar Rao: Who am I? As you mentioned, I'm an executive coach, and I have a very well defined niche. I work with successful people, mostly entrepreneurs, who have already done very well for themselves. But they're driven. They want to have an outsized impact on the world. But at the same time, they have an explicitly spiritual bent that they would like to infuse into every area of their life. They know that life is about more than getting the biggest toys, or the most expensive toys. And there's something deeper, and they want to bring that into all parts of their life. So that's the sandbox in which I play, and to the best of my knowledge, I'm the only person who's playing in that particular sandbox. I may be wrong, but I'm not aware of any others. Andi Simon: Well, clearly it's not a red ocean of lots of competition pushing you away, is it? Srikumar Rao: No there isn't. By the time people come to me, they've already done their homework. They've listened to my TED Talk. They watched many of my videos on YouTube, and they know they want to work with me. Andi Simon: And when they do the kind of work you like to do with them, can you give us some ideas? Srikumar Rao: We have conversations. We have deep conversations, and I have an unusual take on coaching. So let me explain that. In my view, the only thing you ever do in life, Andi, is you work on yourself. A benevolent universe has given you many tools. Your husband is a tool. Your daughters and granddaughters are tools. The business you run, the clients you have, they're all tools. You want to do the very best you can for your clients. You want them to feel: Gee, hiring Andi was the best thing that I ever did. But in the process of doing that, what you're really doing is you're working on yourself. You want to be a great wife. You want to be a great mother. In the process of doing that, what you really do is you work on yourself. The only thing you ever do in life is work on yourself. Now the universe has given you wonderful tools and running a business is a Swiss army knife of tools. You use that skillfully, but you never lose sight of the fact that in using these tools skillfully, what you're really doing is you're working on yourself. Does that make sense to you, Andi? Andi Simon: Yes. Maybe because it requires you to be reflective of what you're doing, how you're doing it, and what the impact or the outcome is. Srikumar Rao: Exactly correct. Because the most important thing, Andi, is not what you're doing. but who you're being as you do it. And too often we get hung up on the doing, and we completely miss the fact that being is much more important than the doing. Andi Simon: I'll stay on that for a moment. I don't want to lose track of why this new book and how it fits. But as I hear you, you work with successful people who may or may not realize how they have become who they are. They may not be happy with where they are, but they don't seem to have a toolkit to begin to take them to the next place. And that is a big theme that I'm finding that people find themselves either in retirement or transition or job change or career growth, and it's being done to them instead of them owning their life and who they are, something that you have found as well. Srikumar Rao: Absolutely, yes. Because too many people, Andi, go around trying to make life happen. Andi Simon: Forgive me for laughing. Srikumar Rao: I love life to unroll, unfold. And as you allow life to unfold, you find that miracles happen and they happen on a regular basis. Andi Simon: Well, you and I were talking about serendipity, but miracles are a different word. Similar? Your early conversation about a path through life, I think, is so valuable to think about for our audience, who's either watching you or listening that the steps aren't necessarily, you can't necessarily see them, but you can begin to live them. Srikumar Rao: Exactly correct. You know, let me share something with you, Andi. If you ask people: Are you happy? Most of them will say, Yes, I'm happy. Remember, these are successful people already, but we define happiness too narrowly. We define happiness as there's nothing really bothering me right now, and there are actually some things that I like, or I'm looking forward to watching a new Netflix series or having dinner with a friend or something like that. That's a very low part. That's not what I'm talking about. I'm talking about, do you feel radiantly alive? Do you feel so full of gratitude that you feel as if you're bursting? Are you not walking, but joyously floating through the air, hitting ground every 100ft or so. Is that your experience of life? And if that's not your experience of life, why not? Because that is your nature. So how do you reclaim the joy you felt as a child, when you could spend an hour watching a dog chase its tail? Why have you lost that? And how can you bring it back to your life today? That's what my coaching is about. And the wonderful thing is that when you're in that space, your business and whatever else you know just floats effortlessly and you accomplish more than you could ever have dreamed possible. It just happens because you're not trying to force things. You're allowing the universe to unfold. Andi Simon: Let's dig deeper into that. Marissa Peer is really a renowned hypnotherapist who often talks about the fact that we live the story in our mind. And our mind also loves to go to pleasure, not pain. Even if the pain causes pleasure, like narcotics might. And the habits take over and you don't even know that you're habit driven. You think you have free will. And so this complicated human where we want to take and know our own selves and take ownership of it, determine our careers, determine our life, give it more intentionality, a purpose, isn't that easy. And so the question becomes, how do you change the story, modify the habits, begin to not simply just wish, but to begin to actually feel that gratitude, that happiness. I don't want to add my ideas, I want to hear yours because our listeners do. But there's a way of taking where you are. You may have your house, you may have your car, you may have your club. You may think you're happy, but take it to a whole next level where you are. Every day is a gift, and you wake up happy to be there. Srikumar Rao: And the short answer to that, Andi, is, you have to work at it. Because we have been programmed, we have been conditioned, and we are so programmed and conditioned that we don't even recognize that we have been programmed and conditioned. It's true. And what we have is, we've got a lot of extraneous thoughts going on. I call it mental chatter, and mental chatter is always with you. It's so much a part of your life that you don't even recognize you have it. You know, the kind of thing that goes: Oh, drat my secretary screwed up again, and should I keep her or should I fire her? And I'm sick and tired of having to go through these small snafus that keep coming up, which she should have handled. All of that is mental chatter. We live our life defined by our mental chatter, and we never recognize that we're living a life which is defined by our mental chatter and not by what is really happening internally to us. But one of the first things that I do with my client is, I get them to understand that this mental chatter, which you ignore, is actually creating the life that you live in. So the first step is to be aware that there is this stuff that is happening. The first step is to recognize that this is happening and this is really running your life. And when you do that and you become aware of your mental chatter as opposed to being carried away by your mental chatter, you start to say, hey, you know, the world isn't what I thought it was. It's something that's different. Yeah, that is the starting point. Andi Simon: With that in mind, I don't like to tease my audience, give us something a little bit more illustrative, concrete to take from it. Stop the mental chatter because when you stop it, then you're going to fill yourself with an opportunity. Srikumar Rao: Absolutely. Let me share something which I'm sure some of your clients and many of the people listening to this podcast can relate with. I was teaching in London Business School and I had a student who was an investment banker and a very successful investment banker. There were many problems in his marriage. Because he was an investment banker, he was working long hours. And because he worked long hours, he missed many family occasions, dinners. You know, his son's first piano recital and stuff like that. And his wife would get very upset at him. “You said you'd be back and you weren't.” And she accused him of not caring. From his perspective, the very fact that he was working long hours at a job that he didn't particularly like was evidence of his caring. And obviously they were able to maintain the lifestyle that they did because of the income he pulled in from his job. So the very fact that he was working long hours was, in his mind, an expression of caring. When she laced into him, he would get defensive, they'd have massive fights. And yet it was just a very uncomfortable, uncomfortable situation. And they were rapidly heading towards divorce. And then in my course, somebody suggested to him that, look, when your wife is lashing it to you for not caring, what she's really saying is, honey, I miss you. And I wish that I was with you or you were with me. Totally not convinced but he agreed to try it. And the next time he was late and his wife started getting mad at him and accusing him of not caring, instead of reacting the way he normally did, he said, Honey, it must have been really tough on you. I'm so sorry. Which is so different from what he usually said that she was taken aback. And what would have been an entire evening quarrel petered out in 30 minutes. And as he continued doing that, and each time that she got angry at him or started to get sarcastic, he would simply say, I love you. And I realize it's very tough on you, I will try to make it up. And gradually their bitter quarrels faded away. They didn't entirely resolve the situation, but it became something to be handled as opposed to: this is going to lead to the end of our marriage. I was about to say that's the way in which we're always telling stories to ourselves. And we don't recognize that we're telling stories to ourselves. We believe this is the reality. Andi Simon: Let's stay there. I'm making some notes. In the stories, we're always a hero. Stories that we're telling ourselves, we're always the hero. Srikumar Rao: Yes. Andi Simon: Right. And so the story you just shared is a beautiful one. Where he was right. She was wrong. She was right. He was wrong until they stopped being heroes to themselves. But literally, he just became, in the words he said to her, caring about how she was. It deflated all of the competition, the animosity. What a beautiful story to share and think about. Yeah, because it's not complicated. It's just, you know, change the story and change your life. Srikumar Rao: Exactly correct. What we don't recognize is that we never experience life the way it is. We always experience life according to the story we tell ourselves about it. And most of us never understand that this is what is happening, that it isn't reality. It's the story we have told ourselves and which we believe without ever recognizing that it is a story, and we have the opportunity to change the narrative. And what I'm very good at, is helping people understand that and to change the narrative. Andi Simon: That leads very nicely, though, into your new book. Tell us about the timing, the pacing. What was a catalytic moment for another book. Modern Wisdom, Ancient Roots has a purpose, and there's something at the end of it for you to use to self-assess. But the context is important here because as the listener thinks about their story that's guiding their life either toward happiness or toward less than, it's an opportunity to begin to rethink who am I and the story I'm living and what am I thinking. Please, what was the motivation for this book and tell us about it. Srikumar Rao: A book, Andi, and you can understand this, being a multiple times author yourself, is like a baby. You know, it comes to a point at which it has to be born. Yes, that's what happened with this. I wanted to, as you know, I'm an executive coach and people ask me questions. And I noticed that there was a great deal of similarity in the questions. And this cuts across countries, cuts across culture, cuts across ethnic and other backgrounds. They're human problems, not problems related to any particular occupation, country, or religious or ethnic background. So I figured that if I put this down, it would be a help to people to understand that. And some of them, of course, might want to go deeper. And if so, they reach out to me and we discuss what I can do for them. But the idea is to give them solid tools, and the heart of it is to understand that the world we're living in is not a real world. It's a construct. We build that construct with our mental chatter and our mental models. Now, this is hugely liberating because if the world we're living in is not real and you don't like it, then you can deconstruct the parts of it you don't like and build it again. But what do you do if the world you live in is real, and you don't like it, you're screwed. But if it's not real, you can change it. So how do you go about doing that? That's what my coaching is all about. And some of the tools that I use are given in that book Modern Wisdom, Ancient Roots. And I've tried to illustrate it by means of stories, because I find that stories bring it home very, very powerfully. This is a story I shared with you about the investment banker and his wife. And, you know, they were able to make almost a U-turn. Andi Simon: Now stay on that. I want to talk a little bit more about some of the chapters in there but we often say that we live an illusion. The story creates an illusion that guides our day but isn't real. And the only truth is there's no truth. It's very hard for people not to say, this isn't real. Well, sort of, but the pen is only real enough when you write with it, and something happens but it's hard to understand that some of them, the stories that you have in there, though, are really very important for thinking about who am I and what am I doing and why am I doing this. Can you share a few of them? I'll say the short chapters, but there are a couple of major points. Srikumar Rao: Here's one. Now, how do you think about the universe? Einstein said that the most important question you will ever ask yourself is, is the universe friendly? Now we respect Einstein because he was a great scientist, but he was also a philosopher who had a very intimate understanding of how the universe worked. And Einstein said, the most important question you will ever ask yourself is, is the universe friendly? Now, there are some people who believe that the universe is distinctly unfriendly, and the sole purpose of the universe is to frustrate. The vast, overwhelming majority of us believe the universe is neither friendly nor unfriendly. It's indifferent. The universe doesn't know you exist and couldn't care less. So here you are going around doing your thing. There's a universe going around doing its thing. Sometimes it seems to work with you, sometimes it seems to work against you. But essentially it's a random process. What if that wasn't true? What if the universe was aware of your existence and the universe was well-disposed towards you? Why does the universe give you stuff you don't want? You want to go on vacation and the universe gives you pandemics and lockdowns. Why does the universe give you stuff you don't want? Well, the universe didn't give you what you wanted, but gave you exactly what you needed for your learning and growth. Like you're a small child and you want a tub of ice cream, and the universe gives you fruits and vegetables, and you don't want fruits and vegetables, you want a tub of ice cream. But the universe through your parents gives you fruits and vegetables. It isn't until you reach a much higher level of maturity that you can say, thank God I got fruits and vegetables rather than a tub of ice cream. What if the universe was exactly like that? That is a mental model, but it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out it's a superior mental model. And regardless of whether the universe was friendly or not, if you believed the universe was friendly, your experience of life would be a whole lot better. How do you adopt this mental model? And the idea is recognize that it's a superior mental model and look for signs that this is operating in your life. And I advocate people having a notebook where they write down the signs that the universe is friendly, and when you do that, you'll see them everywhere. I'll give you an example. This happened to me yesterday. So I had a plumbing issue in one of my toilets, and I called the plumber and he came and fixed it. And after he did that, he had come to my house earlier, and he was missing a drill, and he thought he might have left it downstairs. So I went to the basement to check, and he noticed that there was a pinhole leak in one of my pipes, and discovered it purely by accident. But he looked at that and pointed to my attention and said, I'm here and I'll fix it. It could have been quite major, and he fixed it. Completely serendipitous. That's a miracle. It's a sign the universe is friendly. Most of the time when something like that happens, we dismiss it as a coincidence. So coincidence is a miracle killer. But when you start noting the ways in which the universe seems to be working with you and has your back, you notice so many of them that you'll reach an internal tipping point. And in that tipping point, you will tip over from “the universe is indifferent” to “the universe is friendly.” And when you do that, your experience of life has such a tremendous transformation. Andi Simon: And I think that the timing of your conversation today is so interesting because I too, I believe in, in those kinds of chance moments which aren't clearly by chance. And there was nothing that made him go down there, except perhaps he left his drill down there and nothing that said, please take a look at a pinhole in the pipe or anything for you. I started a conversation today talking about where we're going and the kinds of things we're in. But, it is an interesting lesson for our listeners, a wisdom to begin to open up your mind to possibilities. Srikumar Rao: That is the key point. You've hit the nail right on the head. Open yourself up to possibilities. Andi Simon: Because that's the only way you're going to grow. As we know that the brain hates change, unfamiliarly. It fights everything that comes in and threatens what's current. You have to overcome that cortisol that's produced until it, nope, I want some oxytocin, because I think this is the greatest idea that I could begin to think about. But the only one who can manage that is you. Srikumar Rao: Absolutely. And when you start living in a friendly universe, then you say something happens to you and you say, okay, you know, there's a lesson in there for me. And what is the lesson and how soon can I learn it? And you'll invariably find that the unfortunate situation resolves itself. Andi Simon: So when you're up at two in the morning thinking about something that's really bugging you, let it go. Meditate, quiet the mind. So I'm watching our time and it's almost ready to wrap up, but I want to talk about one thing more and that is meditation, mindfulness, managing your mind. Because unless you understand there are things you can do, in fact, I'm not going to say take charge of your mind, but quiet it, you're going to think, I don't know how to do that. I don't know how to let go of those negatives to absorb the positive. Any things that you particularly like to do? I've learned mindfulness myself, but please. Srikumar Rao: What happens? Andi we have this mental chatter going on, and you can't stop it. It's pointless saying, you know something is happening, don't worry about it. If you could not worry about it, you'd not worry about it. But you're incapable of not worrying about it. That's okay. You cannot stop worrying about it, but you can observe and be aware of the fact that you're worrying about it. So one of the cornerstone exercises of mine is, look, you have this mental chatter that's going on. And the problem is not that you have mental chatter. The problem is you identify with your mental chatter. And when you identify with the mental chatter, it can grab you by the neck and take you to all kinds of dark places. So sit back and observe your mental chatter. Observe yourself feeling worried. Observe yourself feeling anxious. And as you create that distance, you no longer have your mental chatter. You're the observer of the mental chatter. The velocity and the power of that chatter, it diminishes and it loses the ability to take you to places you don't want to go. It's very easy to describe and it's very easy to start off on that. It's very difficult to keep it there because you start observing your mental chatter and in seconds you've lost it and you become your mental chatter. When that happens, go back to being the observer. This is one of the cornerstone exercises of my programs and my coaching. But as you become better and better at that, you can be an observer for a longer and longer period, and you'll find that the things that used to bother you no longer bother you because you let them go. Andi Simon: And that letting go is a lot like what you have to do to grow up. Yeah. Let it go. And at any age, you can be, you know, still a child, let it go to get to the next stage in your own personal growth. I've enjoyed this so much. I do want to say one thing for our listeners and our viewers, that when you're working, when you're in an organization that may have gotten toxic or may seem to be unpleasant to get to work every day, or your folks are beginning to struggle, time to sit down with them and think about that mental chatter that's going on. It may come from outside of the workplace or inside. Or maybe somebody said something to someone. Think about the investment banker and the different ways he can deal with his wife, one of which is caring about the fact she's been alone, or the other is angry that she cares so much about herself that she's not thinking about him and the work he's doing. Same situation, two different stories. But, if you have an organization that seems to be fragile and it's not a bad methodology to begin to sit down and listen to the conversation, observe, be an anthropologist, hang out, listen to the conversations at lunchtime. Begin to pull out of the stories people are telling that mental chatter that's creating noise instead of joy. Because so much joy is there waiting to happen. The universe is joyful. Let it happen. Srikumar Rao: Absolutely. The universe is benevolent. The universe is your friend. Recognize that it's your friend. And the more you recognize it as your friend, the more signs you will get that it in fact is your friend. Andi Simon: And then every day, coming to work isn't work. It's about growing and learning and teaching and gratitude and just having joy. Srikumar Rao: Exactly, exactly, exactly right, Andi. Andi Simon: Last thoughts? Dr. Srikumar Rao has been with us today, talking about his new book, Modern Wisdom, Ancient Roots. But it's about you and about how you can turn work into growth. Begin to think about that, that chatter in your mind as something to let go. Some last thoughts. Srikumar Rao: Your nature is happiness. You're not this shell of skin and bones and blood that you think you are, who you really are is pure awareness. Your job in this life is to recognize who you really are and cast yourself free from this cage in which you have ensnared yourself. Trust yourself and recognize that the door to your prison is always open and unlocked. All you have to do is open the door and step out of it. Andi Simon: This has been a pleasure. It's such fun to share people like Dr. Rao with you because it takes us to the next stage in our own growth. And I don't care where you are, that noise in your brain is going to get in the way of seeing what's possible. Yoshin David Radin is the abbot and founder of the Ithaca Zen Center in upstate New York and he also taught regularly at the Rinzai-ji Zen Center in Los Angeles. He began Zen practice in 1976, was ordained a monk in 1983, and an Oshō in 1989. He has been published in Tricycle Magazine and some of his writings have been turned into songs or spoken poems that were released in four collections, including "Love Songs of a Zen Monk." He also edited two books by his teacher, Joshu Sasaki, and is the author of his own book, "A Temporary Affair: Talks on Awakening and Zen." It is a collection of talks he gave at a time when his health was severely compromised and could have died. We talked about his long and interesting path, his somewhat untraditional teaching, and what it was like to experience serious illness and look at the face of death. Welcome back to The Neuroscience Meets Social and Emotional Learning Podcast, where we cover the science-based evidence behind social and emotional learning (for schools) and emotional intelligence training (in the workplace) with tools, ideas and strategies that we can all use for increased results. I'm Andrea Samadi, and launched this podcast to share how important an understanding of our brain is for our everyday life and results--whether we are a teacher in the classroom, or in the modern workplace, and release content to help all of us, specifically on the topics of health, wellbeing and productivity. This weekend, I heard a message from New York Times Best Selling author of the book, High Performance Habits, Brendon Burchard[i], that got me thinking about where we are right now in the world today. He said that while there might have been times during the Pandemic where we laid low, or held back in protective mode, the pendulum has swung the other way now, and that there is a high need for us ALL to be “more productive as a nation”[ii] as we enter this next phase of the economy, and showing up with our A-game is not just timely, but crucial. I know that listeners of this podcast are high performing, with learning new things at the top of your list, so with this in mind, for today's EPISODE #233, I wanted to go back and review our TOP 12 Most viewed YouTube Video Interviews, as chosen by you, the listener, so we can all go back to the basics, and review some of the most important lessons learned on this podcast, since we launched just over 3 years ago. I used to love listening to radio icon, Casey Kasem's American Top 40[iii] back in the 1980s on my clock radio when I was in high school, where he would leave you in suspense as he counted backwards, to the #1 song, but for this countdown, I will start with our #1 most listened to episode, with something I remember about each one, or the speaker, and a link that we can all use to revisit, and “Sharpen our Saw”[iv] as Dr. Stephen Covey would say, as we can go back and review these most listened to episodes with the 7th Habit. Since I keep an eye on the numbers of this podcast, whether it's with the audio interviews, or video, I thought it was interesting that the Top 10 list holds 8/10 people who were in our early interviews, or the 1st 100 interviews, with 2 people who came in later, and rose to the top. While I think ALL interviews hold important lessons, let's begin with our Top 12. Let the Countdown Begin… The #1 most watched interview, is our first interview with Douglas Fisher and Nancy Frey, EPISODE #77 on “Developing and Delivering High Quality, Distance Learning”[v] that we can all remember came right as parents and teachers were thrown unexpectedly into the world of online learning. Don't miss their return to the podcast for EPISODE #161 with their new book with John Almarode, “How Learning Works”[vi] where they tie learning and the brain What I will never forget with both these interviews is the timing of them. I'm sure no one will ever forget just how disastrous it was bringing our children to at home learning, and by the time we got to revisit everyone, for EPISODE 161, we were right in the middle of the Pandemic, and I remember in the second interview, we ALL had terrible colds. None of us cancelled this interview, that we did at 6am PST but we all said prayers for family members who were struggling with COVID, and we covered the content, using all of our energy to do so. I do receive emails about 2 two specific interviews from Education Departments in different parts of the country who ask if they can use them as models for their students on best practices for interviewing as well as for the content provided, which brings me to think about the fact that regardless of how we are feeling before we have to present something, “A Pro is at their best, regardless.” (Bob Proctor). The second most watched interview was with Howard Berg, The World's Fastest Reader, with over a 90% comprehension rate on “Simple and Easy Strategies to Improve Reading, Comprehension and Recall.” Watch this interview here https://youtu.be/Al0B6HzxtEk This was such a fun interview, as Howard is an incredible teacher who I had no idea was like me, a former swimming teacher who learned about the importance of the student “wanting to learn” to swim that he translated into learning years later. I had met Howard years before I asked him to do this interview, and followed his work, using one of his speed reading strategies with my youngest daughter to help her to stay focused with reading. (It's a common strategy of putting your finger on the page while you are reading, but Howard can show you that this practice can significantly improve reading speed and comprehension with many other important tips to improve memory and learning, that I think includes using humor to engage your students. The third most watch interview is with Suzanne Gundersen on “The Polyvagal Theory in Practice” that you can watch here https://youtu.be/WCFrygUG-UI Understanding the Polyvagal Theory, and how our body shifts between rest and digest, fight or flight and total shut down became important for educators in the classroom to understand the states of minds of their students, and why they were acting certain ways, with strategies that can be used to calm down a student who might be struggling. I'm not going to skip this bit of feedback that you can read in the comment section of this interview, because it's important that when we receive constructive criticism that we hear it. This interview on stress reduction, I do hear often “why did you choose that hyper music for a stress-reducing interview?” The answer is pretty simple, I try not to be defensive, and hear the criticism, so I can take it in to learn and improve, but I honestly had no idea what music to use when I first started out. I can see now that I should have chosen a calmer selection of music for this interview. We are all learning together here. The 4th most watch interview is with Dawson Church on his Bliss Brain Book and Daily Meditations. Watch the interview here https://youtu.be/bH8yVKHjFN4 While I still use Dawson Church's meditations EVERY morning, that you can access through his book, I really could have used them in the interview when my landscapers came, and my dog Nitro went cray, barking for what felt like an eternity. Dr. Church was a pro and explained “The Neuroscience Behind Remodeling our Brain for Happiness, Resilience and Joy” without skipping a beat. When this happened, I could see his calm brain in action, and it really did show from my end, knowing there was a lot of noise that I did cut out. The fifth most watched interview is about Dr. Anna Lembke's popular book, “Dopamine Nation: Finding Balance in the Age of Indulgence” where she takes us through the fact that “we are all running from something” and looking at where we are out of balance using her strategies to help tip us back to balance, towards increased energy and productivity. I had to reach out to Dr. Lembke after seeing her on Dr. Huberman's podcast, and she continues to show up on podcasts in my stream to this day, as this topic isn't losing its importance. She shared that we don't need to give up those things that we love, but take a break from them, and you will notice a brain reset in the process. In 6th place, we have Dr. David Sousa with his series “How the Brain Learns” that was handed to me from an educator over 8 years ago, who urged me to go in the direction of neuroscience. Dr. Sousa's series that's now in its 5th edition, is one of the books I picked up when first beginning to understand how our brain learns to read, do math, how the ELL brain learns, or the special needs brain learns—each book explains the science behind learning and the brain. I still follow Marc's inspiring work, but what I love seeing the most is when someone's work comes full circle. If you follow Marc on Instagram, you would have seen the post about his niece, Esme, who recently graduated from high school, and Marc posted a beautiful photo of the two of them, and wrote that he hopes that he is “as good an uncle to her as her grandfather (Marc's Uncle Marvin who inspired his work) was to him.” (Marc Brackett). When I think of the thousands of schools using Marc's Ruler approach, and the mark he's made on the world, I can't even begin to imagine how much he's inspired this young lady. I might just have to find her, and interview her to find out! Licensed and board certified behavior analyst (BCBA) Jessica Minahan comes in 8th with her book “The Behavior Code” that helps us to all understand and teach the most challenging students. Jessica's work was referred to me by Greg Wolcott, who we have interviewed on this podcast, twice, and Greg often sends over ideas and suggestions for speakers to feature. I wish I knew about The Behavior Code when I was a first-year teacher, facing a classroom filled with behavioral students. His program is the ONLY program led by University faculty who are currently doing peer- reviewed brain-scan research in the field of Network Neuroscience. If you watch this interview, you will see how Mark loves teaching everyone how to maximize our brain power for improved results, when it comes to money, happiness and success. He is now working on a new book with Andy Newberg, MD. He's since moved up to a Head Coach Position with D1 Men's College Hockey, but if you follow his work, you would see that he still remains closely tied with the NHL, male and female player development as well as youth development. Our interview on “Embracing the Daily Grind in the NHL” is applicable for all of us, whether we are a teacher in the classroom, a coach, or working in the corporate world, as he makes a strong case for the daily habits that are embraced, not feared at the pro sports level. What's interesting with this interview, is that it's another case of things coming full circle, as many of the people Todd mentions in this interview (2 years ago), or who he worked with, have now moved forward in their career, using these principles, including himself, which to me shows that there is a science to success. I think it's neat to look back to this interview, when I had no idea that a device like this even existed, to see my personal review that improved my sleep by much more the gold standard of 20 minutes each night. When I wrote this review of the device, I began getting emails about my experience, and whether I still use the device, leading me to release that recent update, sharing that I still do in fact use the Fisher Wallace device to keep my WASO scores low, and now that I know it increases serotonin, I'm sure it does help my mood to be more even keeled and worry less about life's usual stressors. John Ratey, MD comes in 12th on our countdown with our interview #116 on “The Revolutionary New Science of Exercise and the Brain.” You can watch this interview here https://youtu.be/ZTa1zwpQcxQ for a reminder of how important moving our body is for the proper functioning of our brain. When I reviewed Dr. Ratey's interview, I was reminded of the intense research I do on each guest. I'm not sure where I read that Dr. Ratey spent some time as a Zen Monk, but I think it was something he hadn't thought about for some time. I often refer back to Dr. Ratey's interview where I first began to make the connection with the importance of exercise for learning and retention. I could keep counting down and reviewing the Top 40, like Kasey Casem's Show, but I would be here writing all night. To close out today's EPISODE #233, I wanted to go back to what I heard Brendon Burchard mention over the weekend, with the importance of ramping up our learning, and that we must become more productive as a nation. It's not the time to shrink back, and be protective, but lean forward, review our goals, notice what's working, and what isn't, “Sharpen Our Saw” and then move forward with everything that we've got. hello? Hello, Vitality Seekers. This is your host, Caroline Schaefer. Please help me welcome Allan Knight. Alan has a master's degree in counseling psychology and is an author of Soulmates Revolution and he also has a Facebook group called Zen Zone Mindset. He is a former Zen monk of nine years. And I can't wait to get into all of this because it's fascinating as half. How you doing there Allan? Well, now that I'm speaking to you, how can I not be perked up? You're so bubbly and enthusiastic. So I feel fat by the way. Just not a correction, but I've written two books. One is called "Mind Gone Wild". So in mindset and the other one is soulmate, right? Wow. Okay. I'm interested in both of those. I definitely probably have a wild mind. It doesn't seem to ever shut down. That's awesome. Tell us a little backstory, give us a little heads up on how this all evolved. Well, I'll be really brief when I was 13, my mother was diagnosed with cancer and told she had six months to live and she lived for 15 years. my mother Was really my first role model of the power of the human spirit. When I was 19, my father died. I was taking a bachelor of psychology at the time, and I knew I wanted to help people and teach and coach and speak, but I didn't know what the hell I was going to do. So I decided to take a year. Get to know myself travel the world, which I did country to country, to country city to city. Oh, oh, okay. That was beautiful. That was beautiful. That was, is that all there is, is that all there is, is that all there is, there was some void missing inside me. And then I had my first life-changing experience where I came very close to dying. Which freaked the hell out of me. And I was really scared. Came back to Montreal, met some people that have these calm, clear eyes. They were living at what was called the Zen den meditation center. And they invited me there and there were about 35 of them all calm, clear. And I said, I want that. I moved in, became a Zen monk for nine years until I missed women too much. And then I left the monastery. That's a damn good reason. Oh my goodness. It is a fascinating lifestyle though. I just find though the whole premise of that simplicity, you know, the bare minimum, all the meditation, and the cooking together and the community, it's fascinating to me. It really is. So you did that for nine years and then you came back and tell me a little bit about how you got involved in the book writing. You're right. Well, what happened is when I reentered society, I realized that you don't need to be a monk or nun to get in what I call the Zen Zone. That calm clear state which I live in most of the time now I'm so grateful. But then I realized I was a bit of a bastard case as it was living my life out in the world. So I realized quite quickly that unless you connect the Zen zone with every aspect of life, it was going to be limited. So I went back to get a master's degree in counseling psychology, and my thesis was the quality of relationships with it's founded on the quality of relationship you have with yourself. And that was always my modus operandi. I knew intuitively being an Aquarius and a visionary that I was going to work both in the entrepreneurial world from a business point of view. And in the personal world, soulmate, the concept of soulmates always attracted me for some reason. And I knew that I was destined to create a unique program because, when I moved out to Vancouver, I kind of started my, my profession as a coach and something, you know, I had quite an experience because as people were coming into my office and I was doing my assessment and evaluation, many of them admitted to me that they had spent five, 10, or even $25,000 on self-development. Many of them still were procrastinating, still had a hyper active mind. Like you just teaching still had social anxiety, not like you lack of confidence, lack of boldness. And the list goes on and I said, something's wrong. They're spending all this money on self-development. They might go to seminars, get pumped up by the speaker, come back. And then within a short time, they're back to the same old, same old, or they read a lot. A lot of books gather a lot of information and information. But knowledge when it is sometimes not power, heart is power. Presence of mind is power. Compassion is power in freedoms. And the mind of course is adds to it. The light bulb went on when I realized that I needed to create a program that was more of an inner fitness and verbal fitness system. And I always wanted to connect self-development with communication mastery, because I felt like in the self development. Everything's mindset, mindset, mindset. It's great mindset. Great. But it's not the whole thing. Unless you connect the mind into emotional commitment into consistent action into effective communication is limited. Over the years I developed a fast track program. It's my nine-step formula that I use, where if someone goes through it within 90 days, they actually get to quite a high level of inner freedom mental toughness, inner confidence, focus and start mastering their communication skills because when you feel great inside 80% of it oozes out into your communication anyway. Right. And that's what I've developed over the years. So that's how I got into writing and training and coaching. I love that I call it transformational vocabulary. I define that as the conversation that you're having with yourself. And I know about 80% of that is a negative space and that is not good. I do believe most of us do, stay in that space too. It's kinda sad, but, I always tell clients things like. You don't say I have to go work out, it's I get to go work out. It's just a couple little words that you shift around in your head , to really change the outlook of what you're doing. It brings on that gratitude and it just puts things usually from the negative into a positive. So I think, we're on same page here. It's very interesting and I'm such a big believer in everything starts in your mind. And I love the term verbal fitness. Talk to me a little more about verbal fitness. I'm big into fitness itself for health, but, I also love words and it just makes sense that they go together. Well, it's interesting because when people actually say Alan, what's unique about your program and what's unique about you. There are a lot of people that are coaches and of course there's a lot of overlap. But I think the two distinguishing features of what I'm about versus maybe what a lot of people are. I don't know, at this point is that I've created a system that's duplicatable. The problem is that a lot of people spend a lifetime in self-development and still don't get to where they want to be. So this is fairly rapid and to use your word transformational program, that if you go through, once you continue on, on your. When you get off track, you know, exactly which step to get back on track with and get back into what I call the 10 zone, the super highway of life.opAnd so it becomes a self-coaching system and we become less dependent on more teaching and more knowledge and more information. Not that it's bad. It's good. It's all great. But now we start to live it and be it. And I always wanted to be a person on a walk to talk. I don't want to just be a teacher. I want to be a master. Now the verbal part is that I always had a bit of the gift of the gab I was told. And so communication was key to me. And even though a lot of people have gone to tons of self-development, including myself at some point, and even recently, a friend of mine who's highly spiritual, highly evolved. She doesn't know how to break up with her boyfriend. So she's asking me for advice on how to communicate, cause she never really taught some of the communication skills that are very, very important to complete the self-mastery journey. So that's why I teach a lot of selling skills, presentation skills, public speaking, skills, networking skills. But I realized, when I started out that most of it comes from the inside out and that's why I combined the two. I agree a hundred percent. Oh my goodness. How you think about everything? Effects All facets of your life, your businesses, your relationships. It's one of those things like with finances, they really need to teach it in school because you need it for everything. Sorry to interrupt you. No, that's fine. Yeah, here's the thing about communication, which I discovered, which is an interesting point. It depends on where the person's at. There are people that I know that are quite highly developed in their own spiritual, personal development, and all they need is to Polish up their communication skills and learn some of the basic back and forth skills. Others, no matter how much you teach them, these communication skills. I know a gentleman that I met recently, that's like, that is no matter how much you teach them the communication. It won't work now because he hasn't done the work on the inside. So you could teach them all the communication skills in the world that it won't be effective. I again, I brought the nine steps. So a person sees exactly where they are on the mind map, and then they know what they have to focus on what they don't have to focus on. So it's very important to have that discernment. What does this person need at this time? It comes back to other people's experiences, define them and how they think, and then how they hycommunicate and it all is a trickle effect. And even though you might not agree with the word somebody saying, or the actions , it does come back to that verbal fitness and why they're coming up with those words and those terms and those thoughts, and it's, you know, usually their history and what they've been fed. It's kind of fascinating. Tell me a little more about this hyperactive mind. I'm always scared to go into this because I feel a little guilty already. I have a feeling that I'm definitely, the poster child for this . do you think just for fun, is your mind really hyperactive or it's just very active in a stimulating positive way. If I probably had to call a spade a spade here, I would probably say it's a little hyperactive. I can rest, but if it's very hard to just shut it off. Do you have trouble receiving? No, I don't. I wouldn't say that. Are you. It depends on what it is. I'm impatient when it's technology or mechanical. I'm very creative person and I have a lot of patients with that but anything mechanical and technical, not so much. Interesting thing about the hyperactive mind. Cause a lot of people think because I was a monk at some point that I'm going to, I always suggest meditation, which is not true. There's some people that I would suggest meditation is very good for them. At this point, others, I would recommend not do meditation. They're not ready for it. Other people, the reason they can't meditate is they need to work through some of their emotional stuff before they can even meditate. There was a wonderful twin soulmate sister of mine who passed away 10 years ago. And I, when I first got into meditation, I wanted her to meditate because I knew it would help her. The more she meditated, the more angry she became because she had a lot of unresolved anger inside her. She had to deal with the forgiveness of stuff before she can ever think of meditating. I feel so much better. Cause I meditate every morning and I love it. And I would do it for two hours straight if I could, because I just enjoy it so much. So that made me feel better. So I guess I'm at peace with some things. You are definitely at peace with something. There are some subtle things related to impatience or whatever, or you have trouble relaxing. That's a different story. That's not necessarily because you don't meditate. Well, it might be that there are things in your life that as they harmonize and balance out, you will balance out more. Just one fun thing, when I teach my introduction to the strategy of the nine steps, I paint a picture of a circle down here. I call it the Zen zone. Now the Zen zone is that calm, clear mind, just like the blue sky. You go outside blue sky. It's always there, even if it's cloudy and rainy, you know that over is the sun and the clear sky, same as the eternal mind, the Zen zone mind, then connect it to the Zen, mind his emotions, then the rational thinking. Physical body that leads to communication with people and living our dream lifestyle. The problem is that a lot of us are run by the emotions and the mind in a negative way. Either the mind could be negative because we have negative belief systems, or we have a hyperactive mind that gets in the way of tapping deeply into the Zen zone on a consistent basis or the emotions become turbulent, sadness, anger, fear, hate I, you know, whatever, start to fill the air. And that cloudiness of the emotional psychological turbulence gets in the way. And that's going to affect all our communication. Guess what, why are most relationship dysfunctional? Because they're related there's with yourself as this. So, what I do in my system is I helped you to harmonize all of it. So you live more and more in the Zen zone, you transform negative beliefs, you channel your emotions, which is very important into enthusiasm and passion action, harmonious balance action. And then all of that leads, the Zen zone guides it, the higher self guides that not the rational mind and the neck and the negative miner, the high productive emotions. There's an expression by one of my mentors, many years ago, the the mind, the rational mind is a great servant, but a terrible master. And I think we live in a world where we give way too much attention to information and knowledge. It's good, but it's not the master. You know, I am probably a little guilty that I do read a ton, but I read and I need to, utilize what I'm reading more instead of just keep gathering and gathering and gathering. Right. Yes. You have to, you have to implement what the knowledge that you're pulling. And the more I'm hearing about you, the more I'm convinced you're a highly developing being already. Ultimate Zen master. You remember present master than I am. Actually really want to learn to do meditation even better. Sorry to interrupt you. I got a great idea. You and I started a monkery and nunnery. Alright. I don't know about that part. I, I think I just liked the meditation and the lifestyle. Well, most of the lifestyle I'd have the same problem. Yeah. But I do love the psychology end of things a lot. How people tick is very fascinating. Personally, I think communication. The biggest culprit for everything, because the way you communicate with yourself and then B the way you communicate with others and you can't compete with others until you learn to communicate with yourself. So totally agree with you. Yay. That's awesome. Tell me more about this soulmate revolution. Okay. The interesting thing, it's funny. I was on a podcast two days ago, and the woman who made it. She said, Allan, this is your main passion, why aren't you doing it? And I will be focusing in on 2022, but soulmates, the concept of soulmates always fascinated me, even when I was 19 years old. At that time I had this vision that I would start the nightclub, my name kn RGH team bring chivalry back into the room, which I think is a little bit, so it changed into the soulmate revolution, but the concept that. Is that, you know, obviously people ask me all the time, do we have one soulmate? Or many of course we have many. So what does a soulmate? Somebody it's a heart-centered connection. You and I have a heart-centered connection. So we have many soulmates. The thing is we have business soulmate, friends, soulmates, uh, family, soulmates, but we also have romantic soulmates and twin souls. Most people are not up at night thinking. I can't wait til I meet my business soulmate. That's why in my book it says, finding all your soul mates, including the one, I attended a lot of training and webinars and they all talk about drawing in the one drawing into one. And I think to me, Way too much pressure. I don't think it's the works like that. The way I teach the soulmate revolution, the first seven of the nine steps is your inner soulmate. If you learn to tap into that, accept adore, respect and love yourself unconditionally, then you walk around as a love machine without these psychological needs of control and manipulation and fears. And then you just attract organically amazing people. And there'll be many soulmates. There'll be different levels of soulmates. And if, if you want and it's part of destiny or whatever you want to call it, that romantic one will come into your life. I have, and I've had many wonderful soulmates. And if I'm destined to have my next romantic soulmate. Great. If not, that's okay. If they come into my life and we want to do the soulmate revolution together, I always wanted to be a soulmate minister, but by the way, in battery, Mary soulmates off, oh, that's a cool concept. It's relatively a new term in my world. Um, I recently was talking to a friend of mine who does is, uh, is a life coach. And she was recommending that, the men are from Mars. Women are from Venus book and it w she's the one who brought up, was it twin flame, soulmates, something like that? This was a new concept to me, but when I read a definition, I was like, wow, that's amazing. I've read a lot about, so much over the years and Kubler Ross, who was, was pretty wise woman about soulmates. She said something interesting. If you want to attract ordinary relationships, they're all around dysfunctional relationships are all around, but if you want to have a high level soulmate, it's not for the faint of heart, you better raise the bar and raise the bar of your own self because soulmates, when they come together often it's not just an ordinary relation to go jogging and bungee jumping, which you could do of course, but it's to help each other to grow you mirror each other, you grow, it can be difficult, can be challenging and often you have a compassionate motive for coming together and you want to make a big difference in the world, so that what elevates the quality of the soulmate connection. It's a bit beyond, let's say the average. You could be an average couple. That's not supposedly soulmates and it's wonderful if you're happy and that's what you want, nothing wrong with it. You don't have to, but some people, I would never be in a relationship unless it had that quality. And I know that. And I'm sure once, once you know what that quality is like, yes. You can't go back. I'm sure it's like tasting something homemade. That's, you know, the I'm a foodie, but you know, completely from scratch and top quality ingredients and then trying to go eat like something from a grocery store. No, you can't, you can't exchange at that point cause your taste buds know better. Yes. Yes. That is wild. Wow. That is definitely a fascinating, fascinating area I didn't ever hear. I don't think about there's many kinds of soulmates. I always thought it was more of a romantic relationship rather than a business, but that makes sense because you can like totally jive with specific people. And I've learned that through podcasting and through networking with people. And I always say I invite people to my table and I think that's a similar correlation, um, that when I really connect with somebody, we seem to be very much on the same page that you feel that commonality. And, and I guess that Zen quality. I don't know, but you are, I'm not saying just because you're an attractive lady, but which you are, but would you agree that we have a good connection? So our second conversation, we have a pretty good connection. Yes, yes. So we have connection of whatever it is. It's a connection and I don't have that. Same connection that's free flowing deep and wise as this is. Right? So we're so in my mind, we're soulmates. How, what a staple that doesn't matter. It's, it's heart-centered connections is what it is. Yeah, and that's such a beautiful concept. And so one of the things that I want to do for 2022 is I want to stop all that surface-y kind of communication. I think, yearn for it more because cOVID and all this lack of personal connection, you know, people work from home and you can't go out and you can't do this. And I think that for me, and I hope for most other people, it's like when you do have the opportunity, connect with people, I don't want to talk about the weather, you know, I mean, I want to go deeper. I want to know really what makes people tick? How do they really feel, you know, what? We can maybe help each other with and things like that. That is my goal for one of my goals for 2022. it's interesting because people that are interpersonal growth and spiritual growth often talk about, I'm really committed to eating well, I exercise, I take care of my body. I take care of my environment. I take care of this. I take care of that, but then they spend hours and hours and hours in patterns of relationships, which doesn't serve them very well. And they're allowing that toxicity. And that's why I keep coming back to you got to connect self-mastery and self-development. There are amazing people in my life, but I, I earned it because I attracted it through my own energy. And also because I have my own standards, not that I'm so wonderful. I don't mean that, but I want to be careful that who I'm bringing in, just like I'm careful not to have poison come into. I don't want poisonous relationships. Not only is it going to affect me negatively, but it's going to keep me from having very high level relationships. Right. And I actually made a necklace. And on one side of it, it's like a little broach and it has a clear glass on both sides. On one side, it says, conquer yourself. And then the world. Which is so true. Yeah. It's the same thing. Yeah, exactly. I think that's why we connect because we both are on the same page with how people communicate and think. I'm a big health advocate, but I do think it starts in your mind. It's funny how we tell ourselves things to justify things and make things right when they're really not. And it triggered me to question whether I should go get my chocolate croissant today. Yes. Well, there's always the better option and not meaning to change the option, but even if you take a cookie to standard cookies and ones in the grocery store, and one you made in your kitchen where you use unbleached flour and aluminum free baking powder, and, you used grass fed butter, those things, just like all the words you put in your mind. All of those components make up a better product. Having said that I'm going to challenge a little bit of what you just said, if that's okay. Is that it could go to the other extreme to a friend of mine's father, always a fascinating story. He told me he had Alzheimer's at some point in his life, but for years he was obsessed with what he was eating. And he tried to eat perfectly and healthy and everything. And then he got elsewhere. And all of a sudden something clicked and he started eating whatever he want. Then he gained a little weight. He was looked better but he did it by just letting go of this obsession. You know, actually I don't think we're disagreeing at all, because when you obsess about anything and try to make everything perfect, it's unhealthy. I'm all about whole health. Um, I think if you do the right thing, most of the time by your body and your mind, then you're in a good. I'm just saying that if you want to deviate off the path and that's quasi unhealthy that if you think about it, you can make it better than what you might be going to reach for. We agree. Yes, we agree. But yeah, I. I do think that on your birthday, you should eat birthday cake. I don't normally do it on an everyday basis but I don't deprive myself. I don't have that mental thing saying no, there's no exception. And I think that's what your friend did. And that is very harmful. Dr Joe Dispenza he says that, and he's the one who actually got me thinking about that. Cause I think I was more on your friend's path of trying to make the diet and the health perfect. And that's why I believe in the whole health it's about your mind and your environment and the exercise and the diet. It's all inclusive. It's not one or the other and you can only control so much. And that's where the perfect has to go out the window because you cannot control everything. Perfect does not work because you end up that mental stuff. It eats at you. And it's true. I used to flip houses and, the psychology of it was very apparent to me. People would get a divorce. Um, and then they'd lose their house or they'd lose their house. It was like a, several things in a row divorce they'd lose their house and then inevitably illness. It was like the, the perfect trio of a storm every time. It was God awful to listen to and heart wrenching, but it was amazing to me how one domino would hit and then they would just stack, you know, and they couldn't pull themselves out of it. And I've really. A lot of that had to do with mindset, you know? Absolutely. Very cool. It's my, it's my signature question. If you could eliminate one thing in this world, what would it be and why? If I was going to eliminate one thing in this world, here's what it would be the source of most of the problem, which is in my estimation after 25 years of coaching, when people say. There are a lot of things holding people back, but what's that one thing that jumps into your mind when you think what's holding people back is that I would eliminate people being so self-critical and hard on themselves so that if they can release all that crap and start to accept and adore themselves like their own. The World be a great place. That is so true because that's what hinders most, isn't it? Wow. The same question. What would I eliminate? Um, I would eliminate, Ooh, that's tough. I've had so many answers. I'm trying not to use previous answer and I guess it's not as deep as most, but one thing I would love to eliminate is all the heavily processed food. The more I find out about what goes on, especially in America, and what they allow to go into our food, knowing that it's harmful and then people have to deal with all of the health ramifications. I found it in the area of sports and if I do say so myself became quite a good baseball pitcher. I practiced for hours each day, and literally fell in love with the sport and relished the adulation I received from others. But other challenges surfaced like my father passing away when I was 19 and my mother being diagnosed with cancer and she too passed away when I was only 24. That is when my self-development journey really began. After two uninspiring years in university I decided to travel around the world. Six months into the trip I encountered a near death experience while lying on the Mediterranean desert alone having suffered a heat stroke. This traumatic experience evoked much fear in me and upon returning to my home town my spiritual exploration really began. One day I met two people who were living in a meditation center and I was so inspired by their calm, clear eyes and gentle demeanor I said to myself –“that's what I want”. So began my 9 years living as a Zen monk. I lived as a monk for 9 years and it was time to leave when I realized how much I missed relationships with the real world. The irony is that after learning to quiet my mind to a very deep level within a secluded environment, I actually became lost and confused upon returning to regular society. I quickly realized that unless you connect the Zen mindset into every aspect of your life the benefits of Zen practice would be limited. So I focused on living a more balanced lifestyle with a Zen attitude and through that, discovered my true calling which was to teach others how to achieve that as well, but much quicker than I did. ~ You can find Allen Knight on...
