The highly anticipated federal trial against Sean "Diddy" Combs has begun. The hip-hop mogul is facing charges of racketeering and sex trafficking, and could be sentenced to life in prison if found guilty. So why is his attorney, Marc Agnifilo, telling the court they're going to "take the position that there was mutual violence" in his relationship with the singer Cassie Ventura?Brittany is joined by author Beverly Gooden and Loyola University law professor Laurie Levenson to discuss why "mutual abuse" can often come up in celebrity trials and why the concept itself is inherently flawed.Listen to Brittany's past coverage of Diddy by clicking here.Learn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy
Beverly Gooden, author of Surviving: Why We Stay and How We Leave Abusive Relationships and creator of the viral social media movement #WhyIStayed, joins program host Chris Meek in this edition of Next Steps Forward. Listed as one of the top social change hashtags of 2014 by Forbes and named one of the “top 10 hashtags that started a conversation” by Time magazine, Ms. Gooden will discuss what prompted her to start the hashtag, the immediate reaction to the movement and how the greater dialogue about domestic violence is different today as a result of the hashtag. As someone who understands that it's not always simple or easy to leave and that there can be practical reasons why someone stays, she will walk through some of the reasons that women do choose to stay in abusive relationships and what someone should do to protect themselves from physical violence or even death once they are able to leave an abuser. Ms. Gooden speaks from personal experience and works to reframe the conversation and narrative surrounding abusive relationships, prompting listeners to ask “Why did he hit her in the first place” instead of “Why didn't she leave?”

These are the facts: 1 in 4 women globally experience domestic violence. On average, it takes 7 times for most survivors to successfully leave an abusive relationship. But behind the statistics are human beings. One Saturday morning, Beverly Gooden was woken up by her husband shoving her off their bed for no discernible reason. Despite her quick thinking and even quicker footsteps, he caught her, his sudden anger inexplicable. No words were exchanged. He began to strangle her as he had done many times before. With unflinching vulnerability, Gooden details what she had to do to walk away and how others can use her experiences to escape their own abuse. She provides practical advice on things like finances, possessions, and housing—from skimming the grocery money to squirreling away personal belongings, to navigating a domestic violence shelter. As importantly, she offers strategies for overcoming the social and emotional barriers survivors often face, such as overcritical social circles and, most powerfully, love. Uniquely compassionate when it comes to the heartbreak of still loving one's abuser, Gooden shares how she transformed and extended this love outward, using her story to encourage others to choose themselves. The voice and fire behind #WhyIStayed, she's exceptionally positioned to explore the many reasons victims stay in abusive relationships, and how they can muster the resources and motivation to leave.

In this interview Matt Crawford speaks with author Beverly Gooden about her book, Surviving: Why We Stay and How We Leave Abusive Relationships. This is one of the most impactful books I have ever read, full stop. Gooden, a survivor of domestic abuse tells us her story about living through violence and how she survived and thrived. So often we hear stories of abuse and ask the question, "Why did they stay?" Almost immediately it becomes the victims fault, why is that? Survived, explains to us the many different forms abuse takes, how sinister the abusers can be and the social stigma attached to its victims. Most of all though this is a story of hope and like the title says, Surviving. Please read this book and have a conversation about it. 1 in 4 women are victims of domestic abuse, that means that while you may think this doesn't effect you or anyone you know, you could be wrong.

Tony Porter is what we call an OG when it comes to the work of healthy manhood. He's been doing #thework of breaking out of the "The Man Box" with A Call to Men for decades. Tony also speaks about his personal journey of being called out for his sexism while in his career of anti-racism work and how those moments propelled him to become passionate about the work of healthy manhood and anti-sexism. We also talk about our differing perspectives about toxic masculinity and have a great conversation on accountability. It's rare to see public conversations of accountability and in March Tony spoke with Ray Rice in a conversation about accountability, what it looks like for Ray and what it looks like going forward for all of us. A few resources mentioned in this week's episode A Call to Men | Tony Porter's Ted Talk Yesterday, I joined the California Partnership to End Domestic Violence for what was truly a courageous conversation. When Beverly T. Gooden lost her virginity, she didn’t understand what all the hype was about. Raised in a devout Christian home, Beverly enters an unfamiliar environment when she begins high school in the inner city of Cleveland, Ohio. Faced with drugs and violence, she makes the decision to follow the crowd against the teachings of her faith, and give up her virginity to a drug dealer she barely knew.
