Mason, a Tarrant County resident, was acquitted of an illegal voting charge last month. Sorrells' office is now asking the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals to overturn the ruling that cleared her. Mason was convicted of illegal voting in March 2018 and sentenced to five years in prison for casting a provisional ballot in the 2016 election while on supervised release for federal tax evasion. "This office will protect the ballot box from fraudsters who think our laws don't apply to them," Sorrells' office said in a statement. On March 28, 2024 the Texas Second Court of Appeals overturned Mason's conviction because she didn't have "actual knowledge" that she couldn't vote while on federal supervised release in a tax fraud case. Kim T. Cole, Crystal Mason's Attorney spoke with Roland Martin and Michael Imhotep about the ongoing vile and targeted attack on Mason. REGISTER NOW: Next Classes are Sat. Welcome home!    This week hosts Angela Rye, Andrew Gillum, and Tiffany Cross turn their gaze towards Tennessee, where state lawmakers voted to fire the entire board of Tennessee State University last week. Does this have anything to do with the $2 billion dollars the state owes TSU, the state's only HBCU?! Probably.    Staying in the south, Crystal Mason recently ended her years-long battle with the Texas courts, who sentenced her to prison for FIVE YEARS just for trying to vote. In 2016, she cast a provisional ballot not knowing that it was illegal for her to do so since she was technically still under state supervision. Her life has been consumed by BS (excuse the language) legal battles ever since.    Y'all have been asking and now our hosts answer– what's up with Project 2025? On this week's deep dive, we dig into the woke-obsessed 900+ page document that outlines the republican plan to literally remake the federal government in their image. If Trump wins, the plan calls for him to replace tens of thousands of public employees in the FBI, Department of Justice, and more with conservative loyalists. They're gearing up for war, y'all!   Stick around for Politics Are Everywhere, where the hosts discuss Washington State's new Strippers' Bill of Rights.   And as always, we'll hear from you. Texas Court Vindicates Black Woman Wrongly Imprisoned for Voting

The Second District Court of Appeals in Fort Worth, Texas, has overturned the unjust voter fraud conviction and subsequent five-year imprisonment of Crystal Mason for casting a provisional ballot while on probation. The 2016 case shed light on Mason, a Black woman, and her unawareness of her ineligibility to vote due to a prior felony conviction. This fact was pivotal in challenging the prosecution's claim that her signing of an affidavit included awareness of her voting rights status. Justice Wade Birdwell clarified that the affidavit's language did not conclusively prove that she intentionally violated the law (read the full ruling).  Mason's case sparked major bipartisan concern over the severity of the sentence and pointed to a larger battle over voting rights, particularly among Black and brown communities. Mason says she is determined to prevent similar injustices, while her legal team is heavily criticizing prosecutors' motives as a warning to voters. Learn more about your ad choices. Crystal was not aware that the state of Texas prohibited convicted felons from voting while on parole, probation, or while under supervision. A letter had been sent to her residence…after she had already been incarcerated. Crystal had never seen the letter. Crystal was later convicted for voter fraud and sentenced to five years imprisonment. Maria and Julio are joined by Tanya Ballard Brown, executive editor at Government Executive, and Vann Newkirk II, senior editor at The Atlantic and host of the podcast Floodlines. They reflect on 30 years since the police officers who brutally beat Rodney King were acquitted and the uprisings in Los Angeles that followed. They also get into the Biden administration's potential plans for student loan forgiveness, and the latest on voting rights in the lead-up to the midterms.  ITT Staff Picks: “The 1992 riots were in many ways a product of segregation. The sense of disorder they caused only accelerated white flight,” writes Héctor Tobar in The New York Times Magazine. In this thread on Twitter, journalist Michael Harriot expands on the pay, wealth and education disparities between Black and white Americans, and its connection to student loans.  For The Atlantic, Van Newkirk II interviewed Crystal Mason, a Black woman who was convicted to five years in prison for attempting to vote in 2016 and unknowingly violated a Texas voting law. Nancy wondered where you could have heard such a thing. Now we know where —  from Nancy Pelosi, today. You've heard that Eric Adams is in the lead for the New York City Democratic Mayoral primary. Candidate Maya Wiley says she's taking her ranked-choice #2 spot and is turning it into a #1. You might have heard Andrew Yang's presidential team screwed the pooch, but they say it was the mayoral team. And now David Waldman and Greg Dworkin with the latest: Field trip! House Republicans get to dress like Great White Hunters with Donald Trump down by the border. If they find any Trump wall still standing they will pose in front of it. Peter Doocy asks Jen Psaki if Kamala Harris might have a secret crush on Donald. John McAfee, founder of the McAfee antivirus software company was ”eccentric”... You know, the on a remote Belize island running a bio-lab, dozens of armed guards, neighbor turning up with a bullet hole in his head, harems of under age prostitutes, admitted and suspected drugs and drug dealing sort of “eccentric”. The one thing John apparently wasn't into was paying taxes. McAfee told friends “If I suicide myself, I didn't. I was whackd” and, “Know that if I hang myself, a la Epstein, it will be no fault of mine.” Anyhow, yesterday, John was found… Well, he was found in Spain.  The Saudi operatives who killed Jamal Khashoggi received paramilitary training in the U.S., which evidently did not include “making it look like a suicide”. Edward Snodgrass simply tried to execute ”a dying man's wishes”, which happened to be "voter fraud”. He might get the book thrown at him, including months in jail, unlike Crystal Mason, who was unaware that she couldn't vote on parole, and got 5 years. There's no jail time for the first defendant to be sentenced in the Jan. 6 insurrection at the US Capitol, but there are a lot more to come. Donald Trump downplayed COVID-19 while hundreds of thousands of Americans died, caught it (worrying Mark Meadows sick), leveraged the power of the presidency to get himself cured, then went back to mocking people who did get sick while hundreds of thousands more Americans died. Idiot Matt Gaetz tried to showboat on critical race theory, but General Mark Milley, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, earned his title, and proved it with his answer to Gaetz, who probably still has his head cocked like a Labrador retriever, trying to understand it. This is not what Laura Ingraham paid Milley to do. “Critical Race Theory” sounds like maybe you're trying to criticize people's racism, and there are many people out there who are proud of their racism and ready to fight you for it. David suggests that non-racists do nothing… but do nothing over at school board meetings, where taking up space can be good. Progressive leaders and activists wonder if Joe Biden's magic wand broke. Meanwhile, populist and fake-populist leaders in Eastern Europe are sad that no one likes them anymore. In the US, the Southern Baptist Convention had to elect new no-nothings when their old no-nothings learned too much. Ivanka and Jared are privately appalled with the behavior of Donald Trump, or they're just laying low until the estate sale.   Okay, so maybe it wasn't Italian satellites causing Donald to lose the election. Maybe it was chickens... No, those weren't kernels of truth on the henhouse floor.

We snuck a special guest into the studio to help us out with FMK this week... Ed Scruggs of Texas Gun Sense is back to explain "red flag laws" and "mandatory buy-backs." As Beto would say, "Hell yes!" to those. And a big "f*ck no" to teaching nothin' but abstinence in Texas schools. The incredible folks at the Texas Freedom Network are looking out for all the peens and vags (and everything in between), and they tell us how to help. Our new friend Glenaan O'Neil of the Lone Star Victims Advocacy Project teaches how to be cheerfully persistent, and we want to raise money to help her continue serving immigrant victims of abuse in rural Texas. KB Boyce is the Co-Founder and Director of Queer Rebels, a Queer People of Color arts company that connects generations – and honors our queer legacies with visionary art for the future. Musician and media artist KB Boyce is a Gender Non Conforming / trans masculine performer whose adventures have brought them from teenage punk band appearances at CBGBs in NY, to B-grade horror movies in LA, and on to solo blues performance as The Drag King of the Blues in San Francisco. Boyce composes and performs music that pays homage to African-American and Indigenous legacies of resistance through art. Boyce conjures the spirit of cross-dressing Blues performers – reflecting the history, creativity, and aesthetics of the ancestors. Crystal Mason co-founded and co-directed Luna Sea Women's Performance Space. They are the former Executive Director of the Jon Sims Center for the Arts. They lived in Berlin, Germany for 9 years, where they co-owned and operated Schoko Café, a women's art and culture center. Their last project in Berlin was a two-year long European Union funded film project dealing with multi- dimensional discrimination faced by lesbians of color and immigrant lesbians in Berlin. In San Francisco, Crystal was an AIDS activist and organizer working with ACT UP and the San Francisco AIDS Foundation in the Women's and Children's Program. Crystal was also a regular behind the scenes and in front of the camera on Electric City Queer TV for several years. They co-produced the multimedia theater piece Hey, Sailor and created 3 short films: In My Blood, I Know My Soul, and In My Own Hands. In 2016 Crystal created a multimedia performance/installation at Fort Mason as part of the THIS IS WHAT I Want Festival 2016 called There is No Other, Fractured And Complete, Tell Me Something True. They have been a Queer Rebels Board Member since 2012 and is now the Managing Director at Queer Rebels Productions. Episode Highlights KB tells about how the Queer Rebel Festival first began in San Francisco in 2008 as a way to create a space for centering queer/trans people of color (QT POC) artists. KB & Crystal share about their own backgrounds in art and activism. KB group up in a New York family of artists, performers and activists. Crystal grew up always being creative and a storyteller, and explored using story as a tool for liberation activism. They each discuss their visions for the future of QT POC and how Queer Rebels helps to support that vision. We discuss the importance of intergenerational collaboration in art, and the introduction of the Queer Rebels intergenerational residency program. They share some samples of what the audience can expect at the festival this year. I won't belabor it today but I was right again. It turns out you can make any claim you want and as long as it never sees the inside of the courtroom you can destroy a man's reputation Julie Swetnick was interviewed on NBC and said she didn't know what Kavanaugh did or might have done. She said she never saw him spike punch or sexually assault anyone. She did say he was a heavy drinker and very handsy. The truth is far different than her statements last week proving yet again you can never trust what you hear. Look for the evidence. ****Crystal Mason was just sentenced to 5 years for trying to vote in the 2016 election. Her crime? She was a former felon and she cast a provisional ballot without reading the fine print. I'll talk about the many problems with this on the show today. Listen now! Jason   Support the show.
