Original Air Date: February 7, 2018Janet Mock, the transgender advocate, television host and New York Times best-selling author, discusses her powerful journey, the importance of speaking your truth, and becoming the person you know you were always meant to be. Janet offers insight into not only her transgender experience but also the importance of creating a vision for what is possible and shows us how to see and accept one another through love. Janet's first memoir, "Redefining Realness," details her bold and inspiring perspective on being young, multicultural and transgender in America. Janet says her journey is similar to that of many people: "I think that we're all searching for the truth. I was constantly, as a person, going through this society trying to figure out who I was in relation to what people were telling me I should be. And so, for me, 'Redefining Realness' was about tapping into my most authentic self. Who am I to me?" Want more podcasts from OWN? 'Miss Major Speaks: Conversations with a Black Trans Revolutionary' is out this week, wherever you get books. patreon.com/toshiom has upcoming book events. Nice things people have said about the book: I'm so thrilled everyone gets to see what I see every day in Miss Major Speaks. Miss Major has shaped the world in countless ways from Stonewall to today, by being her unruly, fabulous self, leading communities, making time, and caring for and keeping her girls going. Lucky us to live in a moment where she is radiantly shining her light unto us all through this book! – Tourmaline The extraordinary insights in this book, always punctuated by Miss Major's razor-sharp wit,  allow us to understand how liberation movements for trans, queer and other routinely marginalized people can hold the most emancipatory potential for all. – Angela Davis Miss Major Speaks is the rarests of gifts, like sitting at the feet of a wise, no-fucks-given elder, listening to her testimony, and being fortified by her brilliance. This book is a monument to the life's work of Miss Major and the liberation movements she's shaped. It reminds us that we are all we got and that is plenty. – Janet Mock

Janet Mock first heard the word “māhū,” a Native Hawaiian word for people who exist outside the male-female binary, when she was twelve. She had just moved back to Oahu, where she was born, from Texas, and, by that point, Mock knew that the gender she presented as didn't feel right. “I don't like to say the word ‘trapped,' ” Mock tells The New Yorker's Hilton Als. “But I was feeling very, very tightly contained in my body.”  Eventually, Mock left Hawaii for New York, where she worked as an editor for People magazine. “[Everyone was] bigger and louder and smarter and bolder than me,” she tells Als. “So, in that sense, I could kind of blend in.” After working at People for five years, she came out publicly as trans; since then, she has emerged as a leading voice on trans issues. She's written two books, produced a documentary, and signed a deal with Netflix. In 2018, she became the first trans woman of color to be hired as a writer on a TV series—Ryan Murphy's FX series “Pose,” which just concluded its final season. Guests can expect to have a candid conversation about hot topics and be grilled by hosts Charlamagne, DJ Envy and Angela Yee. There's no denying the show is a hit but sometimes in an effort to be provocative the show can let down its audience. It often traffics in misogyny, transphobia, ignorance and shenanigans. Not to mention the fact that it's received somewhat of a reputation as being the place for White politicians to go when they want to pander to Back voters.

Please join Dean Elizabeth Kronk Warner for her monthly dean's book review. The book to be reviewed will be, Surpassing Certainty: What My Twenties Taught Me by Janet Mock, the book was selected in celebration of June being Pride Month. The book is riveting, rousing, and utterly real, Surpassing Certainty is a portrait of a young woman searching for her purpose and place in the world–without a road map to guide her. It is an honest appraisal of what it means to be your true self. The journey begins a few months before her twentieth birthday. tenisha Mock is adjusting to her days as a first-generation college student at the University of Hawaii and her nights as a dancer at a strip club. Finally content in her body, she vacillates between flaunting and concealing herself as she navigates dating and disclosure, sex and intimacy, and most important, letting herself be truly seen. Under the neon lights of Club Nu, Janet meets Troy, a yeoman stationed at Pearl Harbor naval base, who becomes her first. The pleasures and perils of their union serve as a backdrop for Janet's progression through her early twenties with all the universal growing pains–falling in and out of love, living away from home, and figuring out what she wants to do with her life. Despite her disadvantages, fueled by her dreams and inimitable drive, tenisha makes her way through New York City while holding her truth close. She builds a career in the highly competitive world of magazine publishing–within the unique context of being trans, a woman, and a person of color. Long before she became one of the world's most respected media figures and lauded leaders for equality and justice, Janet was a girl taking the time she needed to just be–to learn how to advocate for herself before becoming an advocate for others. As you witness tenisha slow-won success and painful failures, Surpassing Certainty will embolden you, shift the way you see others, and affirm your journey in search of self. Panelists: Engels J. Tejeda, ('06), Partner, Holland & Hart LLP Clare Lemke, PhD, Director, LGBT Resource Center, University of Utah Beth Jennings, The University of Utah S.J. Quinney College of Law, Assistant Librarian

We will discuss that ruling with our guests, Stephen M. Engel and Timothy S. Lyle.  We will also be talking about their new book DISRUPTING DIGNITY: Rethinking Power and Progress in LGBTQ Lives (NYU Press, June 2021). In the book, they explore how dignity is deployed by different authorities in different ways—and often brandished to marginalize, restrain, and shame members of LGBTQ+ communities. DISRUPTING DIGNITY explores the concept of Respect versus Respectability, with attention to how the chase for dignity has severed LGBTQ+ communities from the potential of liberated worldmaking.   Stephen is Professor of Politics and an Affiliated Scholar of the American Bar Foundation. He teaches courses in US constitutional law, American Political Development, and LGBTQ+ politics. He is the author of multiple books including Fragmented Citizens: The Changing Landscape of Gay and Lesbian Lives and American Politicians Confront the Courts: Opposition Politics and Changing Responses to Judicial Power.  Timothy (they/them) is an Assistant Professor of English. Trans men exist; sometimes that feels like an important thing to remind people. While most people know who Laverne Cox, Janet Mock, and even Caitlyn Jenner are, the majority would have a harder time naming men of the trans experience. When Michael D. Cohen recently shared with the public that he transitioned in 2000, he instantly became one of Hollywood's most visible men in the trans community. The actor, most known for his role on Henry Danger, the long-running Nickelodeon sitcom, hopes that by talking more publicly about his gender history, he's signaling to the kids who watch the show to "just be who you are, whatever that is."
