This week, Tre'vell and Jarrett are discussing the complicated relationship we have with Charlamagne Tha God and the rest of the team over at "The Breakfast Club." The NYC-based syndicated radio show has been on the air since 2010 and has seen everyone from bestie in our head Mo'Nique to presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton come through. Guests can expect to have a candid conversation about hot topics and be grilled by hosts Charlamagne, DJ Envy and Angela Yee. There's no denying the show is a hit but sometimes in an effort to be provocative the show can let down its audience. It often traffics in misogyny, transphobia, ignorance and shenanigans. Not to mention the fact that it's received somewhat of a reputation as being the place for White politicians to go when they want to pander to Back voters.

Before starting Apples and Oranges Public Relations (a NY State certified Minority Woman Business Enterprise/MWBE), I worked in the entertainment and fashion industries as a performing artist and marketing director; and in the architecture & design industry as an Account Executive. Lisa is joined by Tamara Winfrey-Harris, a writer who specializes in race and gender and their intersection with politics, popular culture, and current events. She is the author of Dear Black Girl: Letters from Your Sisters on Stepping into Your Power, and she has been called to share her analyses in media outlets such as NPR's Weekend Edition and Janet Mock's So POPular! on MSNBC.com. Her work has also appeared in countless outlets such as The New York Times, The Atlantic, Los Angeles Times, Bitch Magazine, Ms. and other media.  Winfrey-Harris is Vice President of Community Leadership and Effective Philanthropy at the Central Indiana Community Foundation, and she speaks at university campuses nationwide. She has dedicated her life's work to advocating for Black women and girls and defying destructive social narratives that limit their potential. She is co-founder of Centering Sisters, LLC, which unapologetically addresses the needs and issues of Black women, girls, and femmes. Learn more at TamaraWinfreyHarris.com.Praised by The Washington Post as “a myth-busting portrait of Black women in America,” Tamara Winfrey-Harris' The Sisters Are Alright: Changing the Broken Narrative of Black Women in America exposed the high cost of “misogynoir,” uplifted the experiences of real Black women and shed light on their quest to break free of enduring and vicious stereotypes.  Since then, the Black community continues to grapple with systemic racism, while the book has become a touchstone of Black feminist thought. With a television development deal in the works with Wise Entertainment and Gabrielle Union's I'll Have Another Productions, and an updated second edition, The Sisters Are Alright is more relevant than ever (Publication date: October 12, 2021; Berrett-Koehler Publishers).  While emancipation may have occurred more than 150 years ago, Winfrey-Harris argues that America still won't let Black women be free from an insidious coven of caricatures: the servile Mammy, angry Sapphire, and lascivious Jezebel. Persisting to this day, these stereotypes continue to infiltrate newspaper headlines, Sunday sermons, social media memes, cable punditry, government policies, big-screen portrayals and hit song lyrics.  The latest edition of this bestseller features new interviews with diverse Black women. Alongside these authentic experiences and new voices, Winfrey Harris offers fresh Black feminist analysis of current events, politics and, popular culture--from “W.A.P.” and the rise of digital blackface to new civic activism and the risks of Black maternity. These include: The evolution of stereotypes of Black women, with new real-life examples, such as the rise of blackfishing and digital blackface (which help white women rise to fame)The media's continued fascination with Black women's sexuality (as with Cardi B or Megan Thee Stallion).Black women and power and how persistent stereotypes challenge Black women's recent leadership and achievements in activism, community organizing and politics. Interviews with activists and civic leaders and interrogating media coverage and perceptions of Stacey Abrams, Vice President Kamala Harris and others.Debunking vicious misconceptions rooted in long-standing racism, Tamara Winfrey-Harris elevates Black femme voices talking about marriage, motherhood, health, sexuality, beauty, anger, and power and more.

Dear White Women
144: The Sisters Are Alright: Stereotypes Black Women Face, with Tamara Winfrey-Harris

Dear White Women

One of the questions that often has come up around our recent publication of our book (leave us a review on Amazon!) is what it was like to write the book during the end of 2020. And one of the things that always sticks out to us is that the problems, the racism, the treatment of non White people in this country that we wrote about in great detail throughout the book, didn't get fixed in 2020, or 2021. In fact, every single chapter that we wrote in the second and third sections of the book has reoccurred numerous times over since we wrote the book. We're not in some post racial world here. We didn't fix racism because people suddenly realized that it was still happening sometime in the summer of 2020. And our next guest knows that all too well. Tamara Winfrey-Harris wrote The Sisters Are Alright in 2015, and just released a second edition to this book this year. Not because racism is over, or we figured out intersectional feminism, or that we're even all on the same page - not at all. The second edition includes so much more information about the stereotypes and experiences of Black women in America, what we need to know when it comes to intersectional feminism, interracial friendships, and simply co-existing with and respecting everyone. In the end, the sisters are alright. But that doesn't mean that we don't have a ton of work to do - so start by listening in and reflecting on your own perceptions, experiences, and things YOU can do differently. Have questions, comments, or concerns? Email us at hello@dearwhitewomen.com What to listen for: The four stereotypes of Black women, and how they play out in our society today (and take a moment to reflect - do you see any of these yourself?) Tamara's thoughts on if White women can be allies (spoiler alert: YES!), and what allyship really means Ways to combat our tendency to lump people into stereotypes, and instead, challenge ourselves to see people's intersectionalities and identities - their humanity About Tamara Winfrey-Harris Tamara Winfrey-Harris is a writer who specializes in race and gender and their intersection with politics, popular culture, and current events. Janet Mock Finds Her Voice

Janet Mock first heard the word “māhū,” a Native Hawaiian word for people who exist outside the male-female binary, when she was twelve. She had just moved back to Oahu, where she was born, from Texas, and, by that point, Mock knew that the gender she presented as didn't feel right. “I don't like to say the word ‘trapped,' ” Mock tells The New Yorker's Hilton Als. “But I was feeling very, very tightly contained in my body.”    Eventually, Mock left Hawaii for New York, where she worked as an editor for People magazine. “[Everyone was] bigger and louder and smarter and bolder than me,” she tells Als. “So, in that sense, I could kind of blend in.” After working at People for five years, she came out publicly as trans; since then, she has emerged as a leading voice on trans issues. She's written two books, produced a documentary, and signed a deal with Netflix. In 2018, she became the first trans woman of color to be hired as a writer on a TV series—Ryan Murphy's FX series “Pose,” which just concluded its final season.   This story originally aired January 4, 2019

Please join Dean Elizabeth Kronk Warner for her monthly dean's book review. The book to be reviewed will be, Surpassing Certainty: What My Twenties Taught Me by Janet Mock, the book was selected in celebration of June being Pride Month. The book is riveting, rousing, and utterly real, Surpassing Certainty is a portrait of a young woman searching for her purpose and place in the world–without a road map to guide her. It is an honest appraisal of what it means to be your true self. The journey begins a few months before her twentieth birthday. tenisha Mock is adjusting to her days as a first-generation college student at the University of Hawaii and her nights as a dancer at a strip club. Finally content in her body, she vacillates between flaunting and concealing herself as she navigates dating and disclosure, sex and intimacy, and most important, letting herself be truly seen. Under the neon lights of Club Nu, Janet meets Troy, a yeoman stationed at Pearl Harbor naval base, who becomes her first. The pleasures and perils of their union serve as a backdrop for Janet's progression through her early twenties with all the universal growing pains–falling in and out of love, living away from home, and figuring out what she wants to do with her life. Despite her disadvantages, fueled by her dreams and inimitable drive, tenisha makes her way through New York City while holding her truth close. She builds a career in the highly competitive world of magazine publishing–within the unique context of being trans, a woman, and a person of color. Long before she became one of the world's most respected media figures and lauded leaders for equality and justice, Janet was a girl taking the time she needed to just be–to learn how to advocate for herself before becoming an advocate for others. As you witness tenisha slow-won success and painful failures, Surpassing Certainty will embolden you, shift the way you see others, and affirm your journey in search of self. Panelists: Engels J. Tejeda, ('06), Partner, Holland & Hart LLP Clare Lemke, PhD, Director, LGBT Resource Center, University of Utah Beth Jennings, The University of Utah S.J. Quinney College of Law, Assistant Librarian

Today, the Supreme Court , in a unanamous decision, ruled that Philadelphia may not reject a Catholic organization that refused to work with same-sex couples from screening potential foster parents. We will discuss that ruling with our guests, Stephen M. Engel and Timothy S. Lyle.  We will also be talking about their new book DISRUPTING DIGNITY: Rethinking Power and Progress in LGBTQ Lives (NYU Press, June 2021). In the book, they explore how dignity is deployed by different authorities in different ways—and often brandished to marginalize, restrain, and shame members of LGBTQ+ communities. DISRUPTING DIGNITY explores the concept of Respect versus Respectability, with attention to how the chase for dignity has severed LGBTQ+ communities from the potential of liberated worldmaking.   Stephen is Professor of Politics and an Affiliated Scholar of the American Bar Foundation. He teaches courses in US constitutional law, American Political Development, and LGBTQ+ politics. He is the author of multiple books including Fragmented Citizens: The Changing Landscape of Gay and Lesbian Lives and American Politicians Confront the Courts: Opposition Politics and Changing Responses to Judicial Power.  Timothy (they/them) is an Assistant Professor of English. They specialize in contemporary African American literature and culture, focusing on the intersections of race, gender, sexuality, and disability. They have published work on Tyler Perry in Callaloo and Continuum, on Janet Mock in the College Language Association Journal, Callaloo, and MELUS, and on HIV/AIDS narratives in African American Review and The Journal of West Indian Literature. Together, they compete in the balls -- where house members challenge each other in various categories and are judged on their outfits, attitude, or dance skills -- against Blanca's former house mother, Elektra. Pray Tell is Godfather to the children who compete in the balls. Angel is a streetwalker who develops feelings for a new client, Stan, who has a loving wife, Patty.
