A futuristic park that simulates the Old West with human-like robot characters. A 1001-car-long bullet train that speeds perpetually along the remnants of a frozen Earth. These are the worlds of two of TV's most high-concept series to date, HBO's Westworld and TNT's Snowpiercer. Both adaptations of out-there science fiction films -- the former from Michael Crichton, the latter from Bong Joon-ho -- the challenge of adapting them to screen is still vast, even in the big-budget world of Peak TV. And yet, cinematographer John Grillo has worked on both, spearheading the visual look for Westworld's second and third seasons and acting as lead cinematographer for Snowpiercer, which itself took a long, rocky track to release. Grillo's work differs greatly in approach for each of these disparate sci-fi worlds: Westworld is vast and sprawling, contrasting the open plains of the Old West for futurist minimalism in its robot cowboy-less third season; Snowpiercer, meanwhile, is all cramped train cars and mining social drama out of the intricately-designed cars that make up its central setting. Each car is a different world, from the prison-like barracks of the tail to the neon-soaked bacchanal of the Night Car. The Spool sat down with Grillo to talk about the logistical challenges of shooting for TV, the ways both shows have had to change and grow to fit their specific tonal briefs, and whether he might like to take a break from robot revolutions and futuristic class metaphors for a simple, straightforward psychological drama. It's an emotional week on Breakfast All Day as the coronavirus continues to impact all of our lives and the world around us. Christy, Matt and Alonso provide you with our weekly update and even get a little teary-eyed (at least Christy does, talking about her former AP colleague Nick Jesdanun, a marathon runner and lovely guy who died from the virus this week at age 51). But we are a movie podcast first and foremost, so we also bring you reviews of the excellent "Never Rarely Sometimes Always," the documentary "Crip Camp" and the drama "Uncorked," all of which are available through streaming. And over at our Patreon, we discuss episodes 4-7 of "Tiger King" on Netflix, where things take a dark turn, plus recap the latest on HBO's "Westworld" and "The Plot Against America." We're so grateful to you all for sticking with us and hope we can brighten your day a bit. Thanks and stay safe.

In this week's episode from the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, Randell and Mike talk about life while social distancing, the effect of the pandemic on Hollywood and the entertainment industry as a whole, and what lasting changes we may see as we emerge from our personal self-exiles. We touch on movie theaters, comic book shops, and films that have been pushed back or had production delayed. Then we take a look into the first two episodes of Season 3 of HBO's Westworld - what is happening, where the players are, and where we think Jonathan and Lisa are going to take us this year. We also take a deep dive into The Rise of Skywalker Expanded Edition, the novelization of the final Star Wars saga movie. Mike talks about the differences from the film, and why he thinks the novel is a better telling of the story. We hope you stay safe, and enjoy.

"Series Regular" host Josh Wigler dives deep into the season three premiere of HBO's "Westworld," the genre-bending drama about killer robots in a killer world. Directed by Jonathan Nolan and written by Lisa Joy and Jonathan Nolan, "Parce Domine" introduces Westworld viewers to a strange new world: our own, albeit a few decades down the line. Aaron Paul's Caleb Nichols becomes the viewer's eyes and ears on the ground as he and we are once again on a collision course with Evan Rachel Wood's Dolores, herself colliding with a powerful corporate entity and mankind writ large. THR's TV critic and TV's Top Five podcaster Daniel Fienberg joins Wigler on the podcast this week for his critical take on the Westworld premiere, following Wigler's recap of the episode. Plus, Wigler answers listener questions and sets the deck for season three's second episode."Series Regular" is a podcast that follows a hit TV show through its current season. Josh Wigler, for the Hollywood Reporter, will breakdown the most recent episodes and give you his insight and opinion as to what may come next. This third season is going to focus on the third season of HBO's hit show, "Westworld".Hosted by: Josh WiglerProduced by: Matthew Whitehurst and Joshua FarnhamExecutive Produced by: Lesley Goldberg and Josh Wigler

HBOs TV series Westworld is a remake and expansion of the 1973 film by writer Michael Crichton about an immersive theme park where guests can interact with artificially intelligent robots programmed to act out cowboy stories from the Old West. The film follows a similar pattern as Crichtons 1990 novel Jurassic Park, but instead of genetically engineered dinosaurs, Westworld features artificially intelligent robots. The robots malfunction and eventually start to attack the parks guests. The HBO version of Westworld adds a new wrinkle to the story the robots violent turn is a result of their becoming self aware. They gradually realize they are robots and attempt to stage a revolution against their human masters in the name of freedom. Such warnings about the dangers of self aware artificial intelligence AI are familiar in science fiction films, from 2001 A Space Odyssey 1968 to The Terminator 1984 to recent standout Ex Machina 2014. Like its predecessors, the new version of Westworld is essentially a Frankenstein story in which an artificial life form turns on its human creators. But the TV series is not simply a cautionary tale about AI technology. It warns us against the uncritical optimism of scientific utopianism, but it also critiques todays culture of social media and video games, embedding these themes in an overarching philosophical and neuroscientific exploration of consciousness and free will. This Postmodern Realities podcast episode is a conversation with JOURNAL author John McAteer about his Volume 41 4 feature article, HBOs Westworld and the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence
