How Haunted? Podcast | Horrible Histories, Real Life Ghost Stories, and Paranormal Investigations from Some of the Most Haunt

To celebrate the first birthday of How Haunted? on the 2nd September, I've revisited the first ever episode and added a little over 15 minutes of audio from the investigation I conducted at the Covenanter's Prison, a place so dark and dangerous that no one else has ever been allowed to investigate here.   This was initially only available to Patreons, if you want to get access to Patreon content when it's initially released check out Patreon.com/howhauntedpod    Thank you so much for supporting the podcast!   With ties to Greyfriars' Bobby and Harry Potter, Greyfriars Kirkyard in Edinburgh is a fascinating location. In this inaugural episode of How Haunted? let's look at the darker side of the graveyard as we look at the dangerous Mackenzie Poltergeist of the Covenanter's Prison.   We'll delve into the history the ghost stories, and what would happen when Rob was able to spend some time all alone in the Black Mausoleum, the site of over 4000 physical attacks by the violent phantom?   Find out when, together, we ask How Haunted is Greyfriars Kirkyard?   Support How Haunted? by subscribing and leaving a review. If you'd like to become a Patreon for £3 a month, and get yourself early access to episodes and exclusive episodes where Rob will conduct ghost hunts and you'll hear the audio from the night, visit https://patreon.com/HowHauntedPod   Perhaps you'd rather buy me a coffee to make a one off donation to support the pod, you can do that at https://www.buymeacoffee.com/HowHauntedPod Find out more about the pod at https://www.how-haunted.com and you can email Rob at Rob@how-haunted.com     Background music included in this episode includes: Horror Story https://youtu.be/VebaguxUJWE   Music in this episode includes: Darren Curtis – Lurking Evil: https://youtu.be/3i0aVnpeppw   "The Graveyard" composed and produced by "Vivek Abhishek" Music link : https://youtu.be/hynSTzexVzg   " HORROR PIANO MUSIC " composed and produced by "Vivek Abhishek"   Music link :https://youtu.be/xbjuAGgk5lU SUBSCRIBE us on YOUTUBE: https://youtu.be/DQQmmCl8crQ Follow on Facebook: https://bit.ly/33RWRtP Follow on Instagram: https://bit.ly/2ImU2JV

Fred Fogarty - ‘Colorful freak,' tour guide, storyteller, general dogsbody, and in charge of guide training, he's been working with City of the Dead tours for over a decade.City of the Dead Tours has been named ‘Britain's Best Ghost Walk' by scare.com, Yahoo! Travel, and Virgin Media, ‘Best Ghost Tour' by Scare Tours and recommended by Lonely Planet as ‘Edinburgh's Best Ghost Tour.' But Fred didn't know any of this until he looked it up on the interwebs. Fred has been taking people into the Covenanters' Prison and the ‘Black Mausoleum' in Greyfriars Graveyard, home of the infamous Mackenzie Poltergeist, and in to the South Bridge Vaults (Edinburgh's ‘underground city'), the most concentrated areas of sightings in a city already fabled for its hauntings. It's his job to stay calm when people finish tours with scratches, bite marks, bruises, welts, vomit or end up passing out. It's also his job to make up reassuring answers when asked, “So how long does this last for?”If someone told Fred 30 years ago that there was a job where he could make adults and children cry in fear and with laughter simultaneously, present with numerous inexplicable minor injuries, and get paid for it, he'd have laughed you out of town.

Did someone say cemetery? Why yes we did. We went to Scotland for our story this week. It was a big enough story that we decided to split it. We got a listener suggestion, shoutout will be in the episode, but we got to cover Greyfriars!  We learn about a very good doggo Greyfriars Bobby.  We learn about the monks that began the Kirkyard and the brutal history of the “Killing Time.”  The Covenanters Prison is adjacent to the Kirkyard which is the final(or not so final) resting place of George “Bluidy” Mackenzie. The Black Mausoleum holds his remains and until an unfortunate man looking for shelter in the rain made the poor choice of breaking into it. Also our favorite hashtag comes into play. #kidsaredicksOur theme music: “Danse Macabre - Busy Strings"Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com)Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/

In this episode of Lockdown Lore we are joined by Todd and James Corstorphine of City of the Dead Tours, That’s right, the official tour guide of Greyfriars Kirkyard. Subscribe and please leave a review. You can find all information about City of the Dead at https://www.cityofthedeadtours.com/ On paper, the man was everything a gentlemen should be– well-rounded, intelligent and a man of words. Educated at the King’s College, University of Aberdeen, the University of St Andrews, and the University of Bourges in France, he was a member of the Scottish Parliament and a member of the Privy Council of Scotland. In 1677, Mackenzie became Lord Advocate and served Charles II of England where his primary responsibility was to punish anyone who rejected the Church of England or refused to swear loyalty to Charles. Anyone who refused to follow Charles II’s edicts was rounded up, this included members of Scotland’s Presbyterian Covenanters.  So George Mackenzie set out to do the king’s dirty work. In 1679, Mackenzie rounded up approximately 1,200 Presbyterian Covenanters and took them to Edinburgh. Since the number of prisoners outnumbered the prisons, a makeshift prison was assembled in Greyfriars Kirkyard, a graveyard to incarcerate the remaining 400. It became known as Covenanters Prison. It is said that the prisoners were subjected to inhumane treatment-including starvation, exposure to the harsh elements, and torture during the winter. Some prisoners were deported while others were executed and buried in Greyfriars. This state-sanctioned reign of terror was the direct handiwork of Mackenzie, who eventually became known as Bloody MacKenzie. He was singlehandedly responsible for killing nearly 18,000 people during the eight-year period in Scottish history dubbed “The Killing Time.”He died at Westminster in 1691 and was buried in Greyfriars Kirkyard, not far from the site of his atrocities. His tomb became known as the Black Mausoleum. And 300 years after his death, the legend of the Mackenzie Poltergeist was born.

Located on the site of Grefriars Kirkyard, the site has a dark history and a creepy present.  Tonight we talk about wars of the past, legends of the present, and the truly terrifying thing about the nature of our collective history.
