HANDS OFF! Haunted by the ghost of George 'Bloody' Mackenzie, plus the haunting of Eleanore Zugan

Eavesdroppin‘

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 16, 2025 65:39

On Eavesdroppin' comedy podcast this week, Geordie and Michelle delve into the supernatural with two stories of hauntings! In the mid 1600s, there was a tyrannical Scottish lawyer called Sir George ‘Bloody' Mackenzie who had the charming nickname of The Edinburgh Executioner. After his death in 1691, his remains were buried in a mausoleum in Greyfriars kirkyard in Edinburgh, where they remained undisturbed until 1998… When a homeless man broke into George's tomb, he discovered the gruesome decomposing remains of plague victims that had been somehow vac-packed by the tomb. Freaked out, the homeless man fled - but he'd disturbed George's resting place and a series of terrifying events in the graveyard followed. Listen now to hear Geordie dive into the case! Michelle follows with the story of Eleanore Zugan, who presents as one of the most authentic poltergeist cases of the last century. In 1925 in rural Romania, 11 year old Eleanore found a coin on the ground, picked it up, against her friend's wishes, and spent the money on sweets, which she ate herself without sharing. Her grandmother told her she was a wicked child and that she'd swallowed the devil. But did she? Because after this incident, strange things began happening to Eleanore – like, poltergeist strange things. Objects would appear out of thin air. Items would mysteriously fly around the room. Scratches and bite marks would appear on Eleanore's body and strange things would happen whenever she was around. Was she haunted? Or was it something else? Listen now and decide for yourself! So pop on your headphones, grab a brown lemonade and join Geordie & Michelle for this week's episode, plus chit-chat about Pinball Geoff, fake documentaries, telly recs and more, only on Eavesdroppin' podcast. The Greyfriars Haunting in Scotland centers around the infamous paranormal activity that has long been associated with Greyfriars Kirkyard in Edinburgh. Dating back to the late 17th century, the haunting is said to involve various specters, notably the vengeful spirit of Sir George Mackenzie, a notorious persecutor of Covenanters whose tomb serves as a focal point for eerie occurrences. Reports include unexplained cold spots, poltergeist activity, and sensations of being touched or pushed by unseen forces. The Greyfriars Haunting continues to intrigue and unsettle visitors, adding to the mystique of one of Scotland's most haunted locations. ----------------- Head to the Strange Places home website, asylum817.com to keep up with all things Strange Places, as well as the host. In this episode, Annie and Jenny tell one more tale from Greyfriars Kirkyard. It's a story of a very good boy, Greyfriars Bobby. Perhaps one of the most famous dogs in the world, the story of Greyfriars Bobby took Victorian Scotland by storm. But despite his story carrying through the decades, inspiring many books, and even a Disney film, what do we really know about the little Skye Terrier? For there are many questions that swirl around this tale of the ages: Just what is the original story of Bobby? Who was his owner? How did he end up in Greyfriars kirkyard? Why did he stay? And perhaps most importantly, did he ever even exist? Wrestling an armed kidnapper and going on the run as an outlawed preacher: the personal history of James Kirkton is certainly dramatic. But he was more interested in writing a history of the momentous national events through which he lived. That too is an arresting narrative. Find out more in this episode.

Oh, to see the world through the eyes of this dog. A dog who loved an old shepherd so much he'd follow his slowly-dying body from the moors to the streets of Edinburgh to the Greyfriars Kirkyard. Who then was fed by a guilt-ridden restaurant, bathed by a graveyard caretaker, and played with by poor children. Who was then...dragged before the the magistrate in an ownership dispute, but got to play with a cool quill? What a life for GREYFRIARS BOBBY, and what a Disny film for our hosts to be delighted and/or utterly baffled by.

Welcome to my Halloween storytelling month. I will be telling stories that contain ghosts and spooky stuff. Nothing will be terribly gruesome, but there is a mention of murder twice in this story if you want to keep little ears away. The narrator is visiting his friend Allan de Beauchamp. Allan is the last in a long line of Beauchamps, going all the way back to a hard drinking, hard partying fellow named Neville de Beauchamp. Well, his wife dies of a broken heart and Neville becomes a monk at the St Andrews kirk. His inlaws get revenge, but his head follows and curses the whole line of Beauchamps. Melvyn Bragg and guests discuss the religious orders of the Dominicans and the Franciscans, known as the Blackfriars and Greyfriars. "Just as it is better to light up others than to shine alone, it is better to share the fruits of one's contemplation with others than to contemplate in solitude". Thus St Thomas Aquinas described his vocation, not only as a teacher, but also as a Dominican friar and philosopher at the University of Paris. In the 13th century, the religious orders of the Dominicans and the Franciscans were a great force for change in Catholic Europe. They thrived in the emerging towns and cities of the High Middle Ages, leading crusades and changing the way the Church dealt with heretics. They were the evangelists who transformed the Church's preaching of the Christian message to the people. On top of all this, these two orders were also responsible for reconciling Classical and Christian philosophy; their studies of Aristotle paved the way for the Renaissance. They also managed to change the curriculum at the universities of Paris and Oxford. But the Blackfriars and the Greyfriars did not come from the great monasteries of the time; they started out as itinerant preachers surviving upon the charity of the faithful. So how did these two orders come to dominate the spiritual and academic life of the 13th century, and how did they manage to accumulate such huge wealth while professing allegiance to lives of poverty? With Henrietta Leyser, medieval historian and Fellow of St Peter's College, Oxford; Alexander Murray, medieval historian and Emeritus Fellow of University College, Oxford; Anthony Kenny, philosopher and former Master of Balliol College, Oxford.
