We actually recorded this just before we left for Egypt in March this year; it's been in the hopper for a while! Dan Friday, a Native American craftsman and professional glassmaker, joins us to talk about his fascination with glass artifacts of ancient Egypt. Dan was with us on one of our Egypt tours a few years ago, and shared some of his fascination with us at the time. Along with glassmaking and ancient glass, we also discuss the egyptian vases, the fascinating topic of the Rupert's Drop, connections between ancient mythologies, and much more. Join us, Ben from UnchartedX, Adam Young, and Karoly Poka for an afternoon at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York where we will peruse their collection of Ancient Egyptian artifacts, then we will move to the Explorer's Club for dinner and presentations from us and Ben! https://eveningattheexplorersclub.eventbrite.com/ Join our Patreon, support the show, get extra content and early access! https://www.patreon.com/brothersoftheserpent Support the show with a paypal donation: https://paypal.me/snakebros Chapters 00:00 Introduction to Glass Making and Artistry 05:56 Historical Significance of Glass in Egypt 11:56 Precision in Ancient Glass Artifacts 18:01 Vibration and Polishing Techniques in Glass Making 27:01 Exploring Ancient Glass and Polishing Techniques 29:36 Precision in Ancient Vase Production 30:28 The Art of Glass Annealing 32:00 Vibrations and Stone Cutting Theories 33:37 Understanding Rupert's Drop and Internal Stress 36:54 The Fragility of Glass and Its Applications 39:03 Machinery and Tools for Glass and Stone Work 42:24 The Complexity of Stone Cutting in Peru 46:53 The Aesthetic and Functional Aspects of Ancient Stones 52:19 Exploring Ancient Civilizations and Shared Histories 54:28 The Importance of Human Connection and Education 56:57 Experiencing the Mystique of the King's Chamber 01:00:26 The Enigma of Ancient Structures and Their Builders 01:03:09 Mysteries of Peru and the Anunnaki 01:06:50 Theories on Ancient Construction Techniques 01:10:01 Unexplained Phenomena and Ancient Technologies 01:15:10 Cultural Myths and Their Significance 01:22:16 Cultural Narratives and Flood Myths 01:24:51 Art as a Reflection of Heritage 01:27:26 The Process of Glassblowing and Artistic Creation 01:32:27 Exploring the Intersection of Tradition and Modernity 01:39:02 Symmetry in Art: A Deeper Look 01:48:01 Ancient Engineering and Mythology 01:49:19 Exploring Ancient Materials and Techniques 01:51:11 Advancements in Archaeological Projects 01:53:32 Controversies in Archaeological Preservation 01:54:52 Debates on Excavation Practices 01:56:50 The Future of Archaeological Discoveries 02:00:06 Diving into Underwater Archaeology 02:02:34 The Importance of Shared History 02:06:15 Repatriation and Cultural Heritage 02:09:25 Evolving Perspectives in Egyptology

Happy Lunar New Year! According to the Chinese lunisolar calendar, the new year began Saturday. For many, like our host Regina G. Barber, this calendar and its cultural holidays can feel completely detached from the Gregorian calendar. Growing up, she associated the former with the Spring Festival and getting money in red envelopes from relatives, and the other with more American traditions. But the Chinese calendar has a deep, centuries-long shared history with the Gregorian calendar. To learn more about this shared history, Gina talks to scientists and historians, who spill the tea about the science behind calendars, and how both calendars and the Chinese Lunar New Year celebration played a key role in the rise and fall of empires. It's easy to forget how quickly things are forgotten. The zeitgeist of the Medicine World feels shared when you're in med school and residency, and there's an assumption that it will always be the way you remember it. Of course, this is not true, and it can quickly lead to folks "talking past each other". If you're a resident, med student, or just an observer: do you hear the phrase "an institution cannot love you back" and are confused as to why it seems like you're supposed to know what that means? This episode is for you! What the networks deem "newsworthy" barely scratches the surface of what it means to be a nation at war, a community at war, a civilian at war. Cultural anthropologist Dr. Greta Uehling joins us to provide a window into life for noncombatant civilians in Ukraine looks like during the current conflict, and the humor and humanity that gets them through the day. More on Greta Greta Uehling began her career by working directly with refugees, helping them find work in the United States. Her experiences in refugee resettlement motivated her to pursue a PhD in cultural anthropology, and have informed her career ever since. After earning her PhD, she became a consultant with the UN refugee agency (UNHCR) in Geneva, Switzerland, working in the Evaluation and Policy Analysis Unit. Her work on irregular migration there led to another migration-related position as a Family Reunification Coordinator for minors smuggled across United States borders from Latin America and China, in Washington, DC. Named after the globe-trotting Swedish actress Greta Garbo, she has traveled and worked in many regions. Her interviewees have often remarked about the rapport they feel during conversations. Her colleagues in anthropology note how this rapport, and Uehling's writing, centers previously unheard voices. With her current project, Uehling sought to tell the story of internal displacement in Ukraine in a way that is multivocal. She uses the language of lived experience to take readers on a journey through Ukraine that deepens understanding and solidarity. Uehling dedicated Everyday War to her students because they inspire her to write with their many and insightful questions. Nobody puts Baby in the corner and nobody makes Merton Clivette pick a lane. Author and indie publisher, Michael MacBride, regales us with tales of painter, magician, writer and more Merton Clivette, aka Clivette the Great, aka The Man in Black, aka The Mysterious Strange. Join us to learn about all things Clivette and how/why MacBride found himself writing a whole book about him. More on Michael Originally from Michigan, Michael MacBride now calls Minnesota home. Michael received his PhD in 19th century American and 18th century British Literature, but his true focus was 1870-1930. He studied Mark Twain and the period of American history from 1780-1930, and sought out the odd and unusual moments of history. Michael began his college career as an art student, then art history major and has continued to have a love for art and artists. For fun, Michael reads newspapers from 100 years ago--a habit he began in 2017 (which is how he initially became aware of Clivette). Michael taught English, Literature, and Humanities courses at universities and colleges in Minnesota, New Hampshire, Ohio, and Illinois, but also held a number of odd jobs. He has delivered newspapers, worked for UPS, delivered pizzas, did collections at a bank, was a roadie for a country band, and was a grant-writer and funder-researcher for non-profits. Regardless of what he was doing and when, the two consistent things in his life have been: writing and his intense curiosity. Michael has written academic books about pedagogy and cultural studies, non-fiction about LGBTIA+ history, contemporary "bookclub" fiction, speculative/science fiction, and a series of mid-grade interactive detective books. This is a repeat of an Irish Passport classic episode, "Ireland and India: Assassins of Empire", originally published on June 21 2021. Today, Leo Varadkar takes over as Taoiseach. This means that both Britain and Ireland have governments led by people of Indian heritage, as in London Rishi Sunak took over as prime minister in October. The coincidence has provoked renewed curiosity in these leaders, their backgrounds, and the complex shared history between Ireland and India under the British Empire. To mark the day, we're reposting our episode about that very topic: 'Ireland and India: Assassins of Empire'. Anarchist clubs, public assassinations, and secret rebel meetings in a notorious vegetarian restaurant – all these feature in this fascinating episode on the historical links between Ireland and India at the beginning of the 20th century. UCD's Conor Mulvagh explains why Ireland and India were so symbolically important to the survival of the British Empire, and why the independence movements in both countries were often deeply intertwined. We hear how Indian law students in Dublin joined rebel militias, forged friendships with leaders of the Easter Rising, and later took inspiration from Irish nationalism to challenge the British Raj. Vikrant Sharma, founder of the international relations website The Global Telescope, tells us about the many parallels between Ireland and India's history of British rule, and how both should perhaps be considered in a larger framework of colonial strategy and nationalist resistance. We're taking beer back to it's roots, literally, with a not-so-hoppy history lesson from our friend Nicholas Ryan at Herbiery. Join us as we talk about the history of hops, the proven potential of hop-free beers, and what Queering Beer means to us. Learn more about Herbiery and where to find their delicious beers at Herbiery.com And look out for their taproom in the Atwood neighborhood this spring! More on Nicholas Nicholas Ryan is the Founder of Herbiery. They've also lived about 1000 lives at this point and all roads have led back to Nature...and Wisconsin. From canoeing and camping with the Wild River Academy to long distance trail running, Nicholas cherishes memories made out in the wild. These days they are continuously expanding their herbal education, crafting herbal salves, syrups and salad dressings, reading insatiably, cooking elaborate dinners and, of course, brewing beer without hops -- something they consider a natural extension of their queer identity. Anna is the author of the bestselling book, The Three Mothers: How the Mothers of Martin Luther King, Jr., Malcolm X, and James Baldwin Shaped a Nation. In this episode, she opens up about being chronically underestimated, as she worked her way up the academic ladder, and how having children inspired her to champion the unsung mothers who have shaped history.
