LIFELINE tells the story of Scottish scientist Alexander Fleming's world-changing discovery of penicillin in 1928, charting the rise and fall of antibiotics. Fleming's historic story is interwoven with Jess', a present day doctor whose childhood sweetheart, Aaron, is recovering from cancer treatment, almost 100 years after antibiotics were discovered. But just as Aaron is desperate to resume normality and rekindle the romance, his life hangs in the balance, as he waits to see if Fleming's miracle cure will still work well enough to save him. The musical is a two-time Edinburgh Festival Fringe sell-out (2018 and 2022). It has toured to London, Glasgow and the east coast of the USA (2022). It has also been showcased at the UK Houses of Parliament and in Barbados for Prime Minister Mia Mottley. In this very funny episode, we dive into specific social media practices, grabbing control of your career, how getting cast in Broadway's hit OH, MARY! came to be, and brilliant gems of stories from being in the industry – including what it was like to tour the country in Daniel Fish's OKLAHOMA!, for instance.  Hannah Solow is currently understudy to Mary Todd Lincoln and Mary's Chaperone/Bill in Oh, Mary!, written by Cole Escola and directed by Sam Pinkleton, at The Lyceum Theatre on Broadway.  She received her BFA in drama from New York University's Tisch School of the Arts and has performed everywhere from The Kennedy Center to a hostel in Chinatown. She traveled to over 20 cities across the country performing as “Gertie Cummings” in Rodgers and Hammerstein's “Oklahoma!” directed by Daniel Fish. She performed on Broadway at The Cort Theatre as the “understudy” to Mike Birbiglia in his show, The New One.  For many years she performed weekly at the Upright Citizen's Brigade with musical improv team, Rumpleteaser, and monthly with house sketch teams. She has performed her original standup, characters and songs at The Bell House, Caroline's, Club Cumming, Littlefield, and many more places/basements. She has taught improvisation to students pre-K through fifth grade across both Manhattan and Brooklyn. They were way funnier than she is. @babymcgoo Learn more about your ad choices. Abraham "Bram" Stoker was born on November 8, 1847, in Clontarf, Dublin, Ireland. He was the third of seven children born to Abraham Stoker and Charlotte Mathilda Blake Thornley Stoker. Stoker spent much of his early childhood bedridden due to an unknown illness, during which he entertained himself with stories and books. Despite his illness, he eventually made a full recovery and went on to study at Trinity College Dublin, where he excelled in athletics and graduated with honours in Mathematics. After graduation, Stoker pursued a career in civil service while also working as a freelance journalist and theatre critic. His passion for writing led him to become the manager of the Lyceum Theatre in London, where he met and formed a close friendship with the renowned actor Sir Henry Irving. Stoker's association with Irving greatly influenced his literary career and provided inspiration for some of his most famous works. Although Stoker wrote numerous novels, short stories, and non-fiction works, he is best known for his Gothic horror masterpiece, "Dracula," published in 1897. The novel, which tells the story of Count Dracula's attempt to move from Transylvania to England in order to spread the undead curse, has become a timeless classic of English literature. "Dracula" introduced many of the vampire conventions still prevalent in contemporary culture, including the portrayal of vampires as charismatic and aristocratic beings with a thirst for blood. Despite the success of "Dracula," Stoker struggled financially throughout much of his life. He continued to write prolifically, producing several more novels and short stories, but none achieved the same level of success as his iconic vampire tale. Stoker passed away on April 20, 1912, in London, at the age of 64. While he did not live to see the full extent of "Dracula's" enduring legacy, his creation has since become one of the most iconic and influential figures in popular culture, inspiring countless adaptations, sequels, and reimaginings in literature, theatre, film, and television. Bram Stoker's contribution to the horror genre and his enduring legacy as the creator of one of literature's most iconic monsters continue to be celebrated by readers and scholars alike. George's version was the first single released from his 1965 album of the same name. Released as a single in September 1964, it peaked at number three on the BillboardHot Country Singles chart and at number 96 on the BillboardHot 100 in January 1965. Jack's version topped Billboard'sEasy Listening chart and reached number 15 on the Hot 100 the same year. The two recordings combined to reach number 12 on the Cashbox charts, which combined all covers of the same song in one listing and thus gave George Jones his only top-40 hit. The song uses thoroughbred horse racing as the metaphor for the singer's romantic relationships.                 Rockabilly artist Dave Edmunds, in collaboration with the Stray Cats, whose debut album Edmunds had recently produced, recorded a version for his 1981 album, Twangin.... Stray Cats drummer Slim Jim Phantom recalled Edmunds' affection for the song when he was courting the band to produce their debut album: "We met with Edmunds at his house. He had a little pub in his basement. He had a finished basement, outside of London. Edmunds had a jukebox, a little jukebox. He had 'The Race is On' and 'Rockabilly Boogie' by Johnny Burnette. He had those records in his jukebox. We all looked at each other and said, 'This is it.'"[3] Phantom also recalled that the song took "one or two takes" in the studio.[4]Thank you.                 Covered by:        Jack Jones                                                Loretta Lynn                                                Alvin and the Chipmunks for their 1965 album, “Chipmunks a Go Go”                                                Waylon Jennings                                                The Georgia Satellites from 1965 debut album, “Keep The Faith”                                                Elvis Costello                                                And others                                                 Dead played it 60times in concert                                                First:  December 31, 1969 at Boston Tea Party in Boston                                                Last:  May 20, 1995 at Sam Boyd Silver Bowl, Las Vegas  SHOW #1:                           Ripple                                                Track No. 9                                                1:50 – 3:06                                 We prominently featured this song form the Warfield show and talked about how it was last played ever on Sept. 3, 1988 at the Cap Center.  What makes this version we just listened to so special is that this was the last Ripple played by the Dead until the Cap Center show, a seven year gap, and that that was it, no more Ripple.  So this is the last accoustic Ripple ever played since the Cap Center was electric.  Maybe the most famous Dead tune ever, from American Beauty, Hunter's lyrics and Jerry's music mesh together in a way to make this tune not just one of the best Dead tunes ever, but one of the best tunes ever, IMHO!  SHOW #2:                           Hully Gully                                                Track No. 12                                                0:15 – 1:38                                 "(Baby) Hully Gully" is a song written by Fred Sledge Smith and Cliff Goldsmith and recorded by The Olympics, an American doo-wop group formed in 1957.  Released in 1959 on the album, “Doin' the Hully Gully”, it peaked at number 72 on the Billboard Hot 100 in February 1960[2] and sparked the Hully Gully dance craze.                         Covered by:     Buddy Guy                                                Chubby Checkers                                                The Ventures                                                The Beach Boys                                                Many others                                                Peter Pan Peanut Butter add jingle in the 1980's                                                 The Dead's version of this song from this show is the only time they played it in concert.  SHOW #3:                   Gloria                                    Track No. 15                                    2:15 – 3:45                         "Gloria" is a rock song written by Northern Irish singer-songwriter Van Morrison, and originally recorded by Morrison's band Them in 1964. It was released as the B-side of "Baby, Please Don't Go” on December 2, 1964.  The song became a garage rock staple and a part of many rock bands' repertoires.                         According to Morrison, he wrote "Gloria" while performing with the Monarchs in Germany in the summer of 1963, at just about the time he turned 18 years old.[6] He started to perform it at the Maritime Hotel when he returned to Belfast and joined up with the Gamblers to form the band Them. He would ad-lib lyrics as he performed, sometimes stretching the song to 15 or 20 minutes. After signing a contract with Dick Rowe and Decca, Them went to London for a recording session at Decca Three Studios in West Hampstead on 5 April 1964; "Gloria" was one of the seven songs recorded that day.                         Alan Henderson (guitar) contends that Them constituted the first rock group to use two drummers on a recording.[7] Although some sources claim that Jimmy Page played second guitar, other sources deny this.                         Covered by:                 The Doors –   The Doors performed the song several times in 1966 and 1967, with one recording released on Alive, She Cried (1983). It was also released as a single, which reached number 18 on Hot Mainstream Rock Tracks and number 71 on Billboard Hot 100 in 1983.[18] The song is included on Legacy: The Absolute Best (2003) and The Very Best of The Doors (2007).                                                             Patti Smith - Patti Smith recorded it for her album Horses in 1975. Based on the Van Morrison tune, the lyrics had been adapted from an early poem, 'Oath'.[5] Smith's band had started to play the song live and merged it with the poem by 1974, so the song contained half of Smith's own words.[5] For the recording of her debut album, Smith and her band recorded the song live and, after mixing, chose it as the album's opener.                                                            In 1993, Van Morrison recorded a version with John Lee Hooker, which reached the Top 40 in several countries.                                                                        For the Dead, this was the first time they played it live in concert.                                    They wound up playing it only a total of 14 times                                        Last played on June 30, 1995 at Three Rivers Stadium in Pittsburgh                                                   I was lucky enough to catch it on June 25, 1992 at Soldier Field.  SHOW #4:                   Turn On Your Lovelight                                    Track No. 16                                    1:03 – 2:33                                     "Turn On Your Love Light" is a rhythm and blues song recorded by Bobby Bland in 1961. It was both an important R&B and pop chart hit for Bland and has become one of his most identifiable songs. A variety of artists have recorded it, including the Grateful Dead, who made it part of their concert repertoire.  was written by band leader and arranger Joe Scott (with an additional credit given to Duke Records owner/producer Don Robey aka Deadric Malone). Scott's brass arrangement "upped the excitement ante"[2] with "the groove picking up momentum as the horns and percussion talk to each other" and Bland's vocal "riding on top".                                     In 1967, "Turn On Your Love Light" became a staple of Grateful Dead concerts, sung by Ron McKernan: a 15-minute rendition is on their 1969 double live album Live/Dead. McKernan's final performance of "Love Light" – complete with extended vocal raps – occurred at the Lyceum Theatre, London, during the Europe '72 tour. Versions with McKernan were often very long due to long vocal raps, instrumental jams, and drum solos throughout. A version performed at the 1969 Woodstock Festival lasted more than 45 minutes.[8] The Grateful Dead later revived the song in the early 1980s with Bob Weir singing.                                     Before this show at the Melk Weg, the last time the Dead had played it in concert was on May 24,1972 at the Lyceum Ballroom in London at the very end of the Europe '72 tour.  In other words, this was the Dead's first performance of the song without Pigpen on lead.  Dead went on to play it a lot after this show right up until the end.  Bobby played it well, but never even tried the rap that Pig made famous in his extended versions.  No Box Back Knitties when Bobby sang it.                         Dead played it 355 times in concert!  Originally part of the Dark Star>St. Stephen>The Eleven>Lovelight suite of songs that the Dead played constantly during the primal Dead years in the late ‘60's.                        First played on August 4, 1967 at the O'Keefe Center in Toronto                        Last played on June 19, 1975 at Giants Stadium in New Jersey                                     When my good buddy Marc started seeing the Dead in 1984, we joked that every time he went to a show they played Lovelight.  Not a bad thing to be associated with.  Always fun to hear it in concert even without Pig.  OUTRO:                      Sugar Magnolia                                    Track No. 20                                    6:30 – 8:05                                     One of the best Dead tunes of all time and the ultimate show closer.  Always nice to add a little Sunshine Daydream to your day! The boys jam the hell out of it here, a 10+ minute version to close out a remarkable one of a kind Dead show.  Either you were there or you missed it.  What being a Deadhead is all about.

Bram Stoker: Author of Dracula is an affectionate and revealing biography of the man who created the vampire novel that would define the genre and lead to a new age in Gothic horror literature.Based on decades of painstaking research in libraries, museums, and university archives and privileged access to private collections on both sides of the Atlantic, the private letters of Bram and the reminiscences of those who knew him not only shed new light on Stoker's ancestry, his life, loves and friendships they also reveal more about the places and people who inspired him and how he researched and wrote his books. Bram wrote numerous articles, short stories and poetry for newspapers and magazines, he had a total of eleven novels and two collections of short stories published in his lifetime, but he would only become known for one of them – Dracula. Tragically, he did not live long enough to see it as a huge success. In his heyday as Acting Manager for Sir Henry Irving at the Lyceum Theatre in the West End of London, Bram was a well-known figure in a golden age of British theater. He was a big-framed, ebullient, genial, gentleman, with red hair and beard, who never lost his soft Irish brogue, was blessed with wit, and a host of entertaining stories fit for every occasion. Described as having the paw of Hercules and the smile of Machiavelli, above all he knew what it meant to be a loyal friend.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/houseofmysteryradio. Google the words' history of theater,' and you'll get a timeline that begins in ancient Greece, circa the 6th century BCE, and high-kicks forward through time to Broadway and London's West End.  And that's accurate. But it's also missing the dramatic developments in storytelling techniques happening in other parts of the world — Japan, China, Indonesia, India — at the same time. While European peasants learned to walk the straight and narrow via morality plays, Asian theater-goers explored mythology via shadow puppets, dance, and dramatic masks. In this episode, we travel the world (and through time) for a make-believe theater festival that takes us from Shakespeare's Globe Theater in London to the lights of Broadway, then to South America and Indonesia. We drop in on the premier of Fiddler on the Roof, learn about an avant-garde approach to theater meant to build empathy, and are dazzled by puppets that bring kings and demons to life. Then we recommend five great books that took us straight to our seats in the theater, including a novel about a very bad actor making his Broadway debut, a lively retelling of Shakespeare's The Tempest, a peek inside the creative minds behind beloved musicals, historical fiction about Bram Stoker's time at London's legendary Lyceum Theatre, and an unputdownable slice of dark academia with tender theater kids at its heart. Here are the books about theater we recommend on the show: Shadowplay by Joseph O'Connor Hag-Seed by Margaret Atwood A Bright Ray of Darkness by Ethan Hawke Audiobook: A Bright Ray of Darkness by Ethan Hawke The Secret Life of the American Musical: How Broadway Shows Are Built by Jack Viertel If We Were Villains by M.L. Bram Stoker's Dracula was first introduced to the world NOT via his canonical novel, but rather in the pages of a seldom-performed - and by all accounts appalling - play-reading at London's Lyceum Theatre on 18th May, 1897. The stage version was not intended to reach a mass audience; but was rather a clever wheeze of Stoker's to ensure he was recognised as the creator of his iconic characters - as the script needed to be rubber-stamped by the Lord Chamberlain's office prior to performance. In this episode, Olly, Arion and Rebecca reveal the copyright battle Stoker's widow nonetheless endured with the makers of ‘Romanian knock-off' ‘Nosferatu', consider the benefits of Stoker's ‘found footage' approach to authorship, and reveal how an incident in Rhode Island, of all places, may have inspired Stoker to write his play... Shakespeare's Lady Macbeth is ruthless in her pursuit of power and then driven into madness and despair. But the writer and director Zinnie Harris has re-imagined a new story for Lady Macbeth in her version of this classic play. Macbeth (an undoing) - published by Faber - is on at The Lyceum Theatre in Edinburgh until 25th February. Marion Gibson is Professor of Renaissance and Magical Literatures at the University of Exeter and is interested in how power and superstition collide in witch-trials through the centuries. In her latest book, The Witches of St Osyth, she tells the story of the sixteen women and one man accused of sorcery in a small rural village in 1582, and of a community devastated by violence and betrayal. The filmmaker Jo Ingabire Moys draws from her own experience of surviving the Genocide in Rwanda in her short film Bazigaga, shortlisted for a BAFTA. As violence erupts a Tutsi pastor and his young daughter take shelter in the home of the feared shaman Bazigaga. The film was inspired by the true story of Zura Karuhimbi who used her reputation as a witch doctor to save hundreds of lives. Michael R. Jackson's Tony and Pulitzer Prize-winning musical “A Strange Loop” features a Black queer writer named Usher, who works as an usher, struggling to write a musical about a Black queer writer. Jackson's work tackles the terror of the blank page alongside the terrors of the dating scene, and it speaks in frank and heartbreaking terms about Usher's attempt to navigate gay life among Black and white partners. Hilton Als talked with Jackson about how he found inspiration in his own experience seeking identity and community. “I started writing the original monologue—building a sort of life raft for myself—to understand myself,” Jackson said. “It wasn't until I got to a place of understanding that in my life I was caught up in a loop of self-hatred, that I could see what Usher's problem was, and therefore what the structure of the piece was that would lead him out of that and into a better place.”   “A Strange Loop” is playing now at the Lyceum Theatre, on Broadway.
