Welcome to How Haunted? a weekly paranormal podcast where each episode we explore the horrible history, and terrifying ghost stories of one of the most haunted places on planet Earth. I’m Rob Kirkup. Author, paranormal historian, and ghost hunter from the north-east of England. Allow me to be your guide as we dare to investigate in depth the, often dark and troubled, history of each location, and of course, the chilling tales of the ghosts that reside within.
In episode 108 we head to a mansion in Hampshire built in the early 17th century. I will tell you all about this building which was the home of aristocracy, and kings and queens for almost 400 years, but now stands silent, empty and abandoned whilst currently up to sale. This grand house is infamous as it is believed to be haunted by at least 14 separate specters. Let me tell you introduce you to all of them, as you join me in asking, just how haunted is Bramshill House? Support How Haunted? by subscribing and leaving a review. In July Rob will be taking on the "most difficult" walk in the North York Moors to raise money for Cancer Research UK. In the 33rd Patreon bonus podcast I'm back in the Scottish borders, spending some time in the most northerly English town. This is a place that I have a huge fondness for, so much so, that this is a place I took you on a ghost walk last Halloween. You join me spending time here on a bit of a break, but despite this supposedly being a bit of rest and relaxation I couldn't resist grabbing my voice recorder and a torch and heading off to some of the spookier parts of this historic town after dark. Especially considering that listeners have made me aware of places here that I didn't even know are said to be haunted. So join me and let us ask, together, just how haunted is Berwick-upon-Tweed? In episode 107 I head north of the border to a stunning cemetery in Scotland's largest city. This city of the dead overlooks the city of the living, and its most prominent monument celebrates it's 200th birthday this year, predating the first burial here. With 50,000 of the city's dead buried here, it comes as no surprise that this place has long been rumoured to be haunted, but the best known supernatural entity said to lurk here in the darkness, is a vampire. A vampire which was so feared in the 1950s that school children descended on the graveyard with all manner of weapons, hell bent on putting an end to the monster. Let me tell you all about it, as you join me in asking, just how haunted is the Glasgow Necropolis? Support How Haunted? by subscribing and leaving a review. Originally released for Patreon supporters in April 2024 I hope you enjoy this very special episode. In the 20th Patreon bonus podcast you join me on location at a 14th century pele tower in Northumberland, constructed during uncertain times when England was at war with Scotland, and being so close to the border required this tower to be fortified. But what would happen when, all alone, I stepped foot inside this tower? Would I hear the footsteps and voices heard here all too often, or perhaps I would be unfortunate enough to encounter the Preston Hound? Also you'll hear all about what happened to a listener when they visited during the summer of 2023. So tonight, join me as together we ask, just how haunted is Preston Tower? In episode 106 we bring our time in an incredible, yet horrifying city in Massachusetts to a close. The impact of the 1692 witch trials is evident at every turn for anyone fortunate enough to visit, especially around Halloween, as one listener took the time to tell me about, as you'll hear. This might be the final part of a trilogy of episodes, but there's so, so much left to tell you as we've eight more scary places to visit, and go deep into the history and ghost stories. So without further ado, join me and let us ask together for the third and final time, just how haunted is Salem? Support How Haunted? by subscribing and leaving a review. In the 32nd Patreon bonus podcast you join me in Teesside at a location which has served the town of Middlesbrough since 1889. An impressive building which has rose to infamy in recent years for its ghostly inhabitants, most famously that of a man who committed suicide while being held prisoner here. But what would happen when John, Tom and I dared to investigate this place, would we encounter the spirits said to lurk here within the darkness? In episode 105 we continue our time across the pond in a city known the world over for the witch trials that occurred here in 1692. Fourteen women and five men were hanged, at least five people died while in disease infested prison while awaiting trial for witchcraft, and an 81 year old man was crushed to death. All of them were completely innocent. Its little wonder that this place is associated with the supernatural and paranormal, and there are so, so many places within this town rumoured to be haunted. This time I will take you on a guided tour of ten of them. So join me and let us once again ask together, just how haunted is Salem? Support How Haunted? by subscribing and leaving a review. Originally released for Patreons in March 2024 I hope you enjoy this very special episode. In the 19th Patreon bonus podcast you join me as I investigate a building dating from 1825, which is today the largest independent library outside of London. This was the first public building lit by an electric lightbulb and in 1830 a mummy from Egypt was unwrapped right here. But what would happen when, joined by fellow Geordie podcaster, Icy Sedgwick, we attended a fundraising ghost hunt at this historic location in our home town. Some have claimed that this building could be the home of 16 individual spirits, including a former librarian who still the flicks through the books after dark. So tonight, join me as together ask, just how haunted is the Lit & Phil. In episode 104 we begin a very, very special trilogy of episodes in which we'll head to the USA, to somewhere synonymous with all things creepy, ghostly, and witchy. This place was the scene of unease, irrational panic, and mass hysteria in the late 17th century, and what followed has left a stain on this town In this episode I will speak to an expert on the witch trials of 1692, and the legacy left by the murder of 14 women and 6 men, all of whom were guilty of nothing whatsoever. I will then guide you on a tour through the haunted locations to be found here, and in this episode, and the two that will follow – we will visit over 20 locations, as fascinating as they are terrifying. So join me and let us ask together, just how haunted is Salem? Thanks so much to Liah for her incredible insight into the Witch Trials that occurred here, and being so generous with her time. In the 31st Patreon bonus podcast you join me on location very, very close to where I grew up. I am at a beautiful country park, which was built upon the wasteland of a colliery which had been abandoned, entirely, 26 years earlier. What would happen when I visited this site after dark, all alone. A site you won't find in any books, YouTube videos, or other podcasts, but somewhere, that as a child, I would regularly hear scary stories told about by locals who went to the remote wasteland after dark. Originally released for Patreons in February 2024 I hope you enjoy this very special episode. In the 18th Patreon bonus podcast we return once more to York, and in particular to a hotel in the shadow of York Minster which was originally built between 1864 and 1865 as three separate dwellings for the Dean of York Minster, to house the Clergy. But what would happen when my team and I stepped foot inside this hotel, which has been labelled the most haunted in York by some, considering that only two weeks before our investigation the hotel had made the local news when a guest was pulled out of bed by his feet by unseen hands. In episode 102 we go to Northern Ireland and visit a once great house just a short 30 minute drive from Belfast. Built in the mid 1870s as a summer retreat, this mansion has been a home, a hospital, it aided the war effort during World War 2, and now it is sadly a ruined, vandalised, shadow of its former grandeur, facing an uncertain future. And it's considered potentially the most haunted house in Northern Ireland. So join me and let us ask together, just how haunted is Cairndhu House? As we enter December and get ever closer to Christmas, which, for many, is a very, very special time of year. This is the perfect time of year, on this cold, dark, winter's evening to explore twenty different locations the world over which are said to be the haunt of spooks that only make an appearance at Christmas. As the snow falls gently outside, and twinkling fairy lights illuminate our homes, let's gather together around the warmth of the fire to delve into the spectral side of Christmas, and ask just how haunted does it get around Christmastime? Originally released for Patreons in November 2023 I hope you enjoy this very special episode. In the 15th Patreon bonus podcast we head to Edinburgh, and to a student-ran theatre which dates from the mid-19th century, and before we spent a cold November night there back in 2012, had never before had a paranormal investigation carried out there. But what would happen when my team and I stepped foot inside this ancient inn? In this episode not only will I tell you all about the location and our investigation, but you'll hear actual audio from the night itself. Join me on a trip to the seaside, as we head to North Yorkshire and check into a hotel that opened in 1867 as the largest hotel in Europe. The hotel has since seen its fair share of highs and lows, and was even targeted by Adolf Hitler during World War II as being perfect for his base in England. Today the hotel is, sadly, a budget hotel but it is still a popular, historic, retreat for those heading to this delightful town. And of course it's rumoured to be haunted, but just what eerie phenomena is said to occur within this once great building? The culmination of Vampire Month sees us head into the heart of Transylvania, and we will delve deep into the life and death of Vlad III Dracula, a man who undoubtedly influenced Bram Stoker's decision to place his Dracula here. We will then go in search of ghosts in three gothic castles with ties to not only Vlad, but Dracula himself. In the 25th Patreon bonus podcast we're doing something a little bit special. In April I found a hard drive containing audio from four investigations that I conducted in 2011 and 2012. Dozens of hours of audio that I lost around a decade ago, and I thought was lost forever. These were four absolutely incredible locations, and I have covered all four investigations - minus the audio from that night - on the podcast previously. So in the Patreon specials across June, July, August, and September I will revisit those episodes and add in the audio, which was seemingly lost forever. I've saved the best until last, and September's Patreon exclusive episode includes over two hours and 15 minutes of audio from that unforgettable night, so you can hear what happened, exactly as it happened. But what would happen when my team and I descended beneath the city streets to investigate this tourist attraction that has found infamy, since it opened in 2003, and is now regarded as one of the most haunted places, in an incredibly haunted city. Tonight, let us find out together as we ask the question, just how haunted is Mary King's Close? This time we conclude our time in the Czech Republic by visiting a place nicknamed the bone church for obvious reasons as the skeletons of up to 70,000 human beings have been used to create all manner of decorative pieces for this church, understandably considered by many to be one of the scariest places on the planet. But are there any ghosts to be found here? Lets' ask together, just how haunted is the Sedlec Ossuary? In the 24th Patreon bonus podcast you join me at a magnificent building we visited back in episode 21 of the podcast, but we're doing something a little bit special. This time it's time to head back to York Guildhall. And the episode now includes almost 2 hours and 45 minutes of audio from that unforgettable night, so you can hear what happened, exactly as it happened. But what would happen when my team and I stepped foot inside this location on a chilly October evening in search of the spirits to be found here, including phantom monks, voices calling out in empty rooms, and a large shadowy man, who's heavy footsteps are a sure sign of his presence. Tonight, let us find out together as we ask the question, just how haunted is York Guildhall? Originally released for Patreon supporters in September 2023 I hope you enjoy this very special episode. In the 13th Patreon bonus podcast I make the short 20 minute drive to the village of Springwell in Sunderland to investigate Bowes Railway Museum. But what would happen when my team and I joined an organised investigation to see what would happen in this former railway once darkness fell? In this episode not only will I tell you all about the location and our investigation, but you'll hear actual audio from the night itself. Tonight, let us ask, just how haunted is Bowes Railway Museum? Support How Haunted? by subscribing and leaving a review. Let us continue our time in the Czech Republic and visit a former prison in the heart of the country's capital, Prague. This tower is named for it's first, and most famous, inmate, a man who some believe never left and remains here in death. What will the Director for the Department of Tourism have to tell me when I speak with him about the ghosts of this structure within the Prague Castle complex? And I will read you an email from a listener who visited while on holiday and has a tale to tell that is an incredible, as it is utterly terrifying. We begin a month of episodes from the Czech Republic, starting at a 13th century castle a little less than 50 miles from Prague, which has been the subject of debate since it was constructed as no one truly understands its purpose. And the episode now over two hours of audio from that unforgettable night, so you can hear what happened, exactly as it happened. But what would happen when my team and I investigated a building designed to scare, disgust and terrify. Creepy, lifelike mannequins made up like torture victims, or a cannibalistic feast. Actors telling stories of the darkest periods in the history of this city. However could it actually be haunted? I investigated this location a decade ago, and received the biggest fright of my life. This time you join me on location in the wild, remote, Northumberland countryside, and we're on a monster hunt as I search for an eight-foot-tall creature covered in thick hair, with glowing eyes, who causes the ground to shake whenever it is present. In early 2002 the nation's imagination was captured by the notion that this country park could be home to a bigfoot-type creature. Of course the area has a ghost, in the shape of the Bonny Lass of Belsay, and I will tell you of some of the other terrifying creatures that are said to lurk within England's most northern county. This time we take a look at one of the largest, and most impressive Neolithic burial sites in Britain. Originally released for Patreons in August 2023 I hope you enjoy this very special episode. A castle built in the 13th century which now operates as a four star hotel is home to all manner of things that go bump in the night. In the Robert the Bruce room people see a figure walking through their room on a spiral staircase which no longer exists, and a shadowy figure which walks through the wall in the Wallace Suite. But there's so much more. But what would I experience when my team and I investigated this hotel in the winter of 2012? Let's find out together when we head back to Edinburgh and ask, just how haunted is the Dalhousie Castle Hotel? Originally released for Patreons in July 2023 I hope you enjoy this very special episode. A tourist attraction in the heart of one of the scariest cities anywhere on earth, offering frightening fun to families who enjoy ghoulish and gory stories told by actors made up as characters from this city's dark past. When the public have gone home, and this intentionally creepy building is left empty and silence, could there be more to it than meets the eye? With rumours of strange lights appearing and blinking on command, strange knocks seeming to come in answer to questions, and even the apparitions of a caretaker and a young girl, it certainly seems this may be the case. But what would I experience when my team and I investigated this building back in 2011? Let's find out together when we spent some time after dark inside a building that is scary by design, and ask how haunted is the York Dungeon?
