This is the second episode of a three-part UNAJUA Series focused on the Blockchain Africa investment opportunity, featuring the passionate South African venture capitalist Hope Ditlhakanyane and seasoned Zimbabwean venture builder Nzwisisa Chidembo. In their respective roles at hybrid investor, venture builder and accelerator company, Founders Factory Africa, Hope and Nzwi have recently collaborated to facilitate VC investment in two promising African blockchain tech startups. Nzwi was an early adopter of Bitcoin and other blockchain applications on the private investment side of things. He now has a growing personal portfolio of blockchain investments. Meanwhile, Hope is a confessed late-joiner to the space both as a private and corporate investor. But, she's keenly making up for the lost time by finessing smart blockchain investments in her personal capacity while refining her playbook for backing the space as an institutional VC. So, is there a helpful framework for thinking about crypto as a personal investment opportunity? Listen in to hear Nzwi and Hope offer some pointers. The Binance Hack This week’s world-shaking news, of course, centres around the Binance Hack. 7070 BTC was withdrawn, amounting to more than $40 million during a complex hack that involved stealing 2-factor authentication codes and API keys. During a live Twitter AMA, Binance CEO, Changpeng Zhao, addressed the increasingly concerned crypto community, and assured everyone that emergency measures were in place. CoinTelegraph featured this story https://cointelegraph.com/news/binance-ceo-addresses- concerns-live-after-40-mln-btc-hack-rejects-blockchain-reorg-idea BTC Busts Out Hacks aside, it’s been a great week for BTC, as bullish developments led it towards breaking that famed $6000 threshold. And, as of Thursday this week, that beautiful moment we’ve all been waiting for happened. And, we were extremely excited this week to spot this news: that her Satoshi Centre website has been redesigned! May this Botswana-based bitcoin community centre grow from strength to strength!
Alakanani Itireleng is a remarkable woman. Her son fell ill a few years ago, and on a teacher's salary, getting adequate treatment was immensely difficult. She began experimenting with the world's first borderless digital currency: Bitcoin, in order to raise the money needed to treat her son. Alakanani was blown away by the technological marvel that Bitcoin was, and devoted her life to educating others about it. Being a teacher, she established the "Satoshi Centre" in her home town in Botswana back in 2014, and has become a leading authority on the technology here in Africa. James caught up with her at Blockchain Africa, Jo'burg, 2019. Beverley Schäfer is the Minister of Economic Opportunities, Tourism & Agriculture in the Western Cape Province, and she was invited to speak at Blockchain Africa 2019, Africa's leading conference for the Blockchain and DLT industry. Minister Schäfer is behind the Western Cape's rise to the top of South Africa's "highest average income" list, and is passionate about economic development in the country. One of the key areas for economic development is of course in the Tech industry, and with Blockchain being such a prominent area of R&D and development, Minister Schäfer couldn't turn down such an opportunity to be a keynote speaker at the conference.
