Shownotes & Key topics discussed: Welcome to another episode of Category Visionaries — the show that explores GTM stories from tech's most innovative B2B founders. In today's episode, we're speaking with Daumantas Dvilinskas, CEO & Co-Founder of TransferGo, a money transfer platform that has raised over $125 Million in funding. Here are the most interesting points from our conversation: Long-term Focus: TransferGo's 12-year journey has been defined by a commitment to solving the complexities of cross-border payments, a challenge that Daumantas recognized as a young entrepreneur. Innovation Through Partnership: The company's success lies in building a "network of networks," partnering with local financial institutions to bypass traditional international settlement systems like SWIFT. Regulatory Hurdles: Navigating regulatory landscapes and securing necessary licenses was a significant early challenge, especially when dealing with banks that were hesitant to work with a new and unproven company. Community Trust: TransferGo's marketing strategy focuses on building trust within migrant communities, emphasizing referral-based growth and strong brand credibility. Strategic Market Entry: The company's early entry into emerging markets like Ukraine, driven by a gut feeling rather than existing data, has paid off significantly, making it the largest digital money transfer service in the region. Expansion Lessons: Daumantas reflected on the challenges of segment expansion, particularly into business clients, which required a different organizational culture and strategy than consumer-focused efforts.   //   Sponsors: Front Lines — We help B2B tech companies launch, manage, and grow podcasts that drive demand, awareness, and thought leadership. www.FrontLines.io The Global Talent Co. — We help tech startups find, vet, hire, pay, and retain amazing marketing talent that costs 50-70% less than the US & Europe.  www.GlobalTalent.co

Government leaders, policymakers, and a host of incumbent and new providers are focusing on cross-border payments. Innovating to increase transparency, lower cost, and make funds available in near real-time is showing up on agendas and roadmaps across the globe. Money and resources are being thrown at this problem from every possible angle. Yet friction points persist. Money does not get to beneficiaries with equal speed. Costs remain high and hidden. Compliance screening and due diligence create delays. Ryan Zagone, Head of Americas for Wise for Banks, and Glenbrook's Joanna Wisniecka join Yvette on this episode of Payments on Fire to raise a fundamental question: Is technology the whole answer? And if it isn't, what is?

Globally, cross-border payments represent $156 trillion annually - roughly 25% of global GDP - and are projected to reach nearly $250 trillion by 2027. From a payments industry perspective, these transactions account for approximately $40 billion of $2.1 trillion in fee-generated revenues, excluding foreign exchange (2022 McKinsey Global Payments Report). These attention-grabbing numbers have been in the line of sight of regulators, innovators, and incumbents with increasing urgency. Improvements in domestic systems have matured in many countries, leading to conversations on how new fast payments systems can go cross-border. And, indeed, they are in several regions. Central Bank Digital Currencies are piloting cross-border payments, too.  In this episode, we're looking at the rapidly evolving space of cross-border payments with Glenbrook colleagues who have been traveling the globe working extensively with regulators, corporations, and governments on cross-border initiatives.

My guest this week has a genuine passion for building products, teams, and businesses. Convera our CEO Patrick Gauthier moved to the U.S. 30 years ago for what was supposed to be a three-year stint and, fortunately for us, and never looked back. You may not know, Convera (also previously called Western Union Business Solutions) is a cross-border payments company with a mission to make cross-border transactions easy so a variety of businesses with global aspirations can grow with confidence. And according to Patrick, confidence is the main ingredient for the success of their platform. Convera serves 200 countries and territories and supports more than 140 different currencies. They serve a variety of different industry segments, including higher education, nonprofit, import/export, travel, and financial institutions. And their two main offerings revolve around something called Spot Payments, which provides payments across currencies and across borders immediately, as well as various different options that help companies successfully analyze and manage their risk over time.Tune in this week to hear Patrick talk about his journey to CEO, including the one question he always asks himself when it comes to any new venture or project: “How can we meet the customer need differently for a better outcome?” I also talk about where he sees the industry growing in the next 10 years as it relates to several “megatrends” he specifies throughout the industry: Electronification, democratization, and the evolution of the increasingly complex regulatory framework.
