#279 Your Pilot Explains: Is It Safe To Fly Through Dubai?

Bryan Air

Is it safe to fly through Dubai right now? On 14 July, EASA, the regulator behind every European airline, told its operators to avoid the airspace of Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar and the UAE at all altitudes, until at least 29 July. Dubai International is open. Emirates is flying one of its busiest summers ever. Both of those things are true at the same time, and this episode explains how.   I read the actual conflict zone bulletin word for word, unpack the one word in it that should get your attention (misidentification, the MH17 and PS752 word), separate the three things people keep mashing together (the airspace, the airport, the airlines), and walk through the real routing choices from Johannesburg to Europe. Then I give you my honest answer: what I would do flying alone, and what I am doing differently when my wife and kids are next to me.   In this episode of The Bryan Air Podcast, Bryan Roseveare explains the EASA conflict zone bulletin, Dubai airspace restrictions, Gulf airspace safety, whether Dubai airport is open, why Emirates is still flying, Dubai flight cancellations, and how to reroute from Johannesburg to Europe without the Gulf.   TIME-STAMPED FLIGHT PLAN   00:00 The EASA warning, read word for word   01:40 Misidentification: the word that scares pilots   02:48 Why now: the 72 hours before the bulletin   03:15 Airspace, airport, airlines: three different things   04:20 Do you even need the Gulf?   04:31 Joburg to Europe: every routing option   05:24 Why airlines are reacting so differently   06:33 What avoiding the Gulf actually costs you   07:17 Flying solo vs flying with your family   09:18 The takeaway: two risk models   I'm Bryan Roseveare. Fourteen years an airline pilot, now a simulator instructor. I train the pilots flying you around.   SUPPORT THE SHOW   Bryan Air → https://bryanairpodcast.com/   Support on Patreon → https://www.patreon.com/bryanair

After a brutal week off recovering from adult wisdom teeth surgery, Zweli is officially back in the hot seat and he’s bringing the absolute grossest, most cringe-worthy adulting stories with him! On this hilarious edition of Word on the Street, Zweli reflects on the painful realities of growing up, starting with a horrifying late-night story. While recovering in a dark room, a innocent midnight sip of water turned into an absolute nightmare when he realized he’d just swallowed a full-blown cockroach! That nightmare opened up the floodgates for the 947 family to confess their own accidental "creepy crawly" horror stories. From biting into a juicy apple only to find half a worm, to discovering a rogue fly floating in a morning coffee or finding a fingernail in a bought sandwich, Joburg listeners call in to share the wildest, stomach-churning things they’ve inadvertently ingested. It’s a lighthearted, laugh-out-loud episode that will have you double-checking your water glass and cringing in total solidarity. Tune in for the chaos, the comedy, and a gentle reminder to always turn the lights on before taking a midnight drink! Spend weekday afternoons with Zweli. He keeps you in the loop with everything from music and movies to sport and pop culture. But here's the question...If you decide to drop your medical aid, what's your Plan B? Do you move to a hospital plan? Take out medical insurance? Put money into an emergency savings account? Springbok ticket prices have soared, suites have been taken over under “clean stadium” rules, and loyal supporters are being squeezed out. BizNews Rugby's boots-on-the-ground reporter, Rory Steyn, speaks to representatives from legendary Joburg rugby clubs and bitter rivals Pirates and Wanderers, as well as chartered accountant and former Sun International CEO, David Coutts-Trotter, about the financial damage being done to community clubs and the growing anger among fans. With families facing an ever-rising cost for a day at the rugby and clubs losing vital income, they warn that SARU's pursuit of revenue could weaken the very grassroots structures and supporter base that sustain South African rugby.

As kids, many of us picked our favourite sports team before we even knew the rules of the game. Maybe it was because of your dad, your older brother, your friends, or simply because you liked the colours. But now that you're older... is it okay to change? Anele says, "Why must I stick with something I chose when I was eight years old?" It's a fair question. People change, players move on, and sometimes you simply connect with a different team. Cindy says many people didn't even choose their team in the first place. They inherited it from family. If your whole house supports one club, did you ever really have a choice? Then there's Formula 1. Is it different? Do you support a constructor like Ferrari or Mercedes, or do you follow your favourite driver wherever they go? Anele admits she's happy to change with a driver, although Alakhe is still loyal to Bottas. We want to know: Have you ever switched allegiances? Parents spend years teaching their children new skills... but every now and then, the tables turn. Suddenly, you have to learn something because your child needs you to. Maybe the school has a bake sale every second week, so you had to learn how to bake. Maybe hockey coaching fees were too expensive, so you learnt the game yourself and became the coach. Former Anele & The Club callscreener Ngebo has sparked a debate after posting a video venting about her child's crèche. This Friday is Pajama Day, but if her child wants to wear PJs to school, parents have to cough up R200. Her argument is simple: how are children who are barely out of nappies already expected to be fundraising? It got us thinking... what age is just too young for schools to start asking parents for fundraising money? It feels like the moment your child starts crèche, the requests start rolling in - Pajama Day, Slipper Day, Colour Runs, Fun Walks, cake sales, raffles... and before you know it, you're spending hundreds of rands every term. King Keraun posted a on Facebooj saying, "White people ate when they came up with 'You and what army" And honestly... they've got a point. There are just certain phrases that belong to certain people. White people gave us classics like "Were you born in a barn?", "Money doesn't grow on trees," and "You and what army?" Meanwhile, Black households gave us gems like "I'll give you something to cry about," "You think I'm one of your friends?" or "When I get home..." which was somehow scarier than getting shouted at right there. So we want to know... which race absolutely nailed a phrase? White people, come defend your classics. Black people, tell us the sayings we own. Indian, coloured... everyone is welcome. We're celebrating the one-liners that instantly tell you where they came from. Just keep it light-hearted and funny, we're laughing with each other, not at each other. EPISODE SNAPSHOT   Welcome to The Bryan Air Podcast. Career intelligence for pilots. We break down executive moves, economic forces, and the technology reshaping how pilots are trained, assessed, and employed. Boardroom decisions land on your flight deck. We translate them first. No corporate spin. Just the intelligence pilots actually need. From 1 July, every traveler in and out of South Africa must file an online SARS declaration inside a 24-hour window before departure. Children included, and multi-stop itineraries make the timing even messier. With visas already strangling inbound business travel, Bryan asks the question nobody in government seems to be asking: why add another barrier at the border? Then IATA's May numbers show the world flying less for a second straight month while African carriers grow fastest with the emptiest cabins, and Emirates launches a geo-targeted recruitment drive aimed squarely at South African pilots. Necessary admin or self-inflicted damage? You decide. In this solo episode of The Bryan Air Podcast, Bryan Roseveare breaks down South Africa's new SARS travel declaration, IATA's May air traffic results, and aviation careers opening up at Emirates, Riyadh Air, and Air Europa.   TIME-STAMPED FLIGHT PLAN   00:00 This week's headlines: SARS declarations and IATA's May numbers 00:56 South Africa's new SARS travel declaration explained 01:24 Why one more barrier to travel is the wrong move right now 04:35 Inside the form: the 24-hour window, multi-stop catches, and kids 07:45 IATA May traffic: global demand down 2.2%, Africa fastest-growing at 6.6% 11:32 Pilot hiring signals: the recovery is starting to show 14:00 Emirates: 56 weekly SA flights and a targeted hunt for South African pilots 17:14 Air Europa lands in Joburg and Riyadh Air opens three new routes 20:04 Air Peace takes its first E175 and why Nigeria matters to African aviation 21:22 Wrap up plus a new All-Weather Operations Simulator coming next week   JOIN THE BRYAN AIR COMMUNITY Bryan Air is a career intelligence ecosystem for pilots. Dr Mary Travelbest Guide
Johannesburg, South Africa and traveling as a US Citizen today

Dr Mary Travelbest Guide

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 19, 2026 10:35

Welcome back to the  Dr. Mary Travelbest Guide podcast. I returned from another 90-day journey around the world, and I'm excited to connect with fellow solo travelers, share experiences, and help build world peace, one person at a time. The FAQ is: Do you feel isolated as an American traveling now?  I've been solo traveling quite a bit over the past year, and I've noticed a trend. There have been multiple times when people in a group have discussed where they're from and asked questions about each other's countries. And then it gets to me, and I say the US, and it goes silent until the conversation moves on to someone else. It happens in hostels and bars. In fact, I've had multiple times where I say I'm American and the person will just instantly walk away. I know my country has done awful things that have earned this reputation. It's just disappointing that it creates a slightly isolating feeling at first. Luckily, I've had experiences where people have been really friendly, and I hope to have more of those. Has anyone else had similar experiences? I want to make it clear to those from the United States that they should not let this discourage them. The majority of my interactions don't go this way. I'm posting because I've had repeated, small incidents in several countries and want to see if others have noticed a pattern. Even when they happen, they've never felt more than just passive-aggressive.   60-second confidence challenge Your challenge today, the Confidence Challenge in Johannesburg, is safety.    If you like today's Confidence Challenge, my book series delves deeper into how to feel safe when you travel alone. I also discuss my safari in Kenya, part of East Africa. You may want to book a safari in South Africa and read the book as you move through the 5 steps to solo travel, from easy to more challenging, with tips on foreign-language communication. You can find the series at the link in the description.    See Book A for addressing this concern.  Find it on the website at https://www.5stepstosolotravel.com/ or on Amazon. It's a several-part series. Today's destination is Johannesburg, South Africa. Today, we're talking about Johannesburg, or "Joburg," a place that may not feel easy at first—but that's exactly why it matters. We will cover the Apartheid Museum, Soweto, Mandela, soccer, Maboneng, Rosebank, and Sandton. We'll also tell you about a good tour guide and how to get informed. Let's be clear: this is not a relaxed, wander-anywhere kind of destination. But if you approach it thoughtfully, it becomes one of the most eye-opening cultural experiences you can have. So let's walk through what's worth your time and what requires your attention. Johannesburg is not built for tourists—it's built from history. Gold mining in the 1800s created the city. Apartheid shaped it. And today, you feel both, everywhere. You'll notice: Stark contrasts between wealth and poverty Gated neighborhoods, security systems, and guarded homes Areas where the infrastructure feels inconsistent And if you're willing to see it clearly, this city teaches you something few others can. The Apartheid Museum If you are on a solo or group tour, start here. Not optional. The Apartheid Museum is one of the most powerful museums in the world. You don't just read history—you walk through it. Give yourself at least 2–3 hours. And be ready—it's emotionally heavy. Soweto + Mandela's Legacy   Next, visit Soweto—short for "South Western Township." Soweto is where history becomes personal. Before your trip, if you can, read Mandela's book, The Long Walk to Freedom. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt2304771/   Walk down Vilakazi Street—home to both Nobel Peace Prize winners from the area. Nelson Mandela Desmond Tutu Visit the Nelson Mandela House, now a museum. You'll see: Local life Street vendors Music, dancing, and community But go with a guide. Not optional. There were small fires in the neighborhoods along the roadside, and some traffic lights were not working. Be aware, but be ready to learn.   Want to see a Soccer game while here? There are two teams you can watch at home games.   Johannesburg-based Soweto giants Orlando Pirates play home games at  Orlando Stadium, which the City of Johannesburg owns. While Carling Black Label has recently partnered with Kaizer Chiefs as a sponsor, the teams' major sponsors historically have included Vodacom and others.   https://www.espn.com/espn/story/_/id/43608195/what-soweto-derby-why-kaizer-chiefs-orlando-pirates-south-africa-most-popular-teams   Head to Maboneng, Johannesburg's creative district. Think: Street art Local designers Live music Markets like The Playground It's one of the few places where you can walk more freely—but still stay aware. Grab a meal, enjoy the vibe, but don't linger alone after dark.   Now, let's visit Rosebank + Sandton (Modern Johannesburg)   If you're wondering where things feel familiar—this is it. In Rosebank: Visit the arts and crafts market Browse local goods safely In Sandton: Upscale shopping Restaurants Hotels like Marriott Global brands like Apple and Nike It's polished—but don't confuse that with the whole city. A few dining places to consider: Pata Pata in Maboneng Salvation Café https://www.salvationcafe.co.za/ Looking for a travel guide in Johannesburg? Here's a suggestion. Beck N Coll. Benoni is Colleen Becker's hometown, just outside of Johannesburg. Her grown Son is Calvin. She's married to Glenn. "Beck n Coll "is their travel company name.  Through other means, nsuch aske Servas and Host a Sister, they have had 70-plus guests so far. Help them by booking your trip with them. Here is the website for more info. This episode is not a sponsored post. They can book you on a safari tour as they are experts here.   https://www.beckncoll.co.za/ https://www.instagram.com/hostasister/ Here is more on Host A Sister. It's  a global Facebook community connecting women worldwide to share homes for free, fostering friendship, cultural exchange, and safe, budget-friendly travel. Members (women and non-binary individuals) offer accommodation, local meetups, and travel advice without monetary exchange, ensuring it remains a non-dating platform, and I used it here. I met Colleen through Servas, and she told me about Host a Sister, which I used later in my 90-day trip. Let's summarize and add value with my reality check: Not every place will feel intuitive or walkable—plan your stops. You'll hear "be careful," and you should question what that actually means. Here's the reality: Do not travel alone at night Use Uber or arrange drivers Stay in known areas (Sandton, Rosebank) Avoid spontaneous wandering Keep your phone out of sight in public But also, don't assume constant danger. Many travelers report no issues when they stay aware and structured, like me. This guidance is not fear-based travel. It's informed travel. Johannesburg is not about comfort. It's about understanding. You will see: Inequality Resilience Creativity   My missteps: Wrong Airport in Johannesburg   Travel Mistake to Avoid    I should have booked Johannesburg's other airport from Cape Town. I didn't realize there were two airports, and I picked the cheaper one. I ended up on the wrong side of town and had to Uber from the airport to the train station. Then I got on the train and got to my destination.   So, in the end, I did not save any money.   Check the airport before you book Safari Air!   Thanks for listening, and I'll see you on the next journey.
