1717 kommt es auf Schloss Weißenstein unter dem Landgraf von Hessen-Kassel zu einem besonderen Experiment: Johann Bessler, der als Orffyreus in Erscheinung trat, präsentiert eine ewig laufende Maschine, die in der Lage sein sollte, Mühlen in Gang zu halten, Bergwerke auszupumpen, Förderkörbe zu heben, Sümpfe auszutrocknen und natürlich sollte sie auch die Wasserspiele in den Lustgärten betreiben – ohne weitere Energiezufuhr. À l'occasion de notre série à la découverte des Parcs nationaux français, voyage au sein du plus grand Parc national d'Europe et de France: le Parc Amazonien de Guyane (PAG). Sur près de 3,4 millions d'hectares, ce trésor de biodiversité se déploie entre forêt tropicale humide et communes isolées du sud de la Guyane. Depuis sa création en 2007, le PAG cherche à allier protection de l'environnement, préservation des modes de vie et des cultures locales autochtones et développement durable : un équilibre fragile, complexe à maintenir sur un territoire immense, habité et particulièrement convoité par les orpailleurs. Deuxième étape: Camopi, en terre amérindienne. À l'extrême sud-est de la Guyane, à la frontière brésilienne, la commune de Camopi s'étire sur les rives du fleuve Oyapock, là où vivent les communautés amérindiennes Téko et Wayãpi. Pendant longtemps, la commune enclavée était uniquement accessible en pirogue depuis Saint-Georges. Récemment, le bourg de Camopi est sorti de la ZAR, ou zone d'accès réglementé, soumise à autorisation. Et à présent, tout le monde peut s'y rendre, qui plus est, par avion, depuis 2021. Cette ouverture récente voulue par la municipalité, l'arrivée de l'avion, mais aussi la création du Parc en 2007 qui a installé une délégation à Camopi sont venues bousculer le quotidien d'autochtones qui, par le passé, ont déjà connu les bouleversements violents de la colonisation qui cherchait à étendre son emprise jusque dans ces marges amazoniennes qui lui échappaient encore. Aller à Camopi aujourd'hui, c'est aller à la rencontre d'Amérindiens français pris entre deux mondes, fiers de leur culture et du génie autochtone que leur ont transmis les anciens, mais souvent oubliés, relégués aux confins de leur propre territoire. Sur place, la délégation du Parc et ses agents, en partie amérindiens, représentent l'une des rares instances nationales présentes à l'année sur le territoire et le Parc Amazonien de Guyane sert souvent de relais administratif et social auprès des populations locales. "The original soundtrack I used from Cities & Memory's archive was recorded on a street in Cairo at sunset, outside the Marriott Hotel and Omar Khayyam casino, on Saray El Gezira Street. The famous Gezirah Palace was completed in 1869 by Khedive Ismail, to host dignitaries for the opening of the Suez Canal that year. When I first listened to this piece I heard, among the sounds of car horns and the evening prayer call, the sound of footsteps running down the street and away, and a sharp gasp of breath. The whipping wind in the microphone sounded like a jinn or an Afreet, plural Afareet. It reminded me of my favourite song El Shawarea Hawadeet (the streets are tales) by El Masreyeen from 1977. Lonely streets echoing with memories, stories and Afareet.  "In the final piece, you can hear layers of sounds from different eras. The song Al Bulbul Gani (the nightingale came to me) recorded in Cairo in 1906, written by Abd al-hayy Hilmi; the sounds of drumming used in the Cairo Zar women's ritual by the group Mazaher – a ritual to try to find accommodation with demons that have taken over a woman's body. You can hear too, strange sounds of a furious female jinn screaming, shouting and banging at each outrageous sentence from British prime minister Anthony Eden, in his public address in 1956 during the Suez Crisis, where he attempts to justify Britain's bombing of Egypt. Oil is the justification for everything.  "As this Cairo tale unfolds, the Arabian riff, or “Melodia Arabe”, sinuously weaves between the Zar drumming. Composed in the 1800's, the Arabian riff, also known as The Streets of Cairo, was a little Orientalist ditty that supposedly evoked the exotic Arab. The quote I am reading is from the 1899 gothic novel, Pharos The Egyptian, by Guy Boothby. The series of Berachot which we are required to recite each morning include Birkot Ha'Torah – three blessings over the privilege of studying Torah. The unique importance of these Berachot is expressed by the Gemara in Masechet Nedarim (81). The Gemara observes that some Torah scholars have children who do not become Torah scholars, and it attributes this phenomenon to the fact that these scholars do not recite Birkot Ha'Torah. It seems that in their eagerness to begin learning, they proceed directly to their studies without first reciting the Beracha over the Misva of Torah study. This neglect of Birkot Ha'Torah has an impact upon their children, causing them not to pursue Torah scholarship. Rav Yishak Abuhab (Spain, 14 th century) writes that the Gemara here refers to scholars who learned Torah as an intellectual exercise, for the mental satisfaction that Torah study brings, rather than for the purpose of fulfilling a Misva and connecting with Hashem. They therefore did not recite Birkot Ha'Torah, just as we do not recite Berachot over the study of other disciplines – because for them, Torah learning was just another field of study. This directly affected their children. In any event, it is clear from the Gemara's comment that one of the ways parents can help ensure that their children follow the path of Torah is by properly fulfilling the obligation of Birkot Ha'Torah. Many concerned parents approach me to receive advice, to ask what they can do so that their children will grow to become Torah-committed Jewish adults. One strategy is to recite Birkot Ha'Torah each morning with Kavana (concentration). Indeed, these Berachot include the prayer that our descendants should all study Torah ("Ve'niheyeh Anahnu Ve'se'esaenu Ve'se'esa'eh Se'esa'enu…"). By reciting this prayer with proper Kavana, we can help ensure that our children commit themselves to Torah. In our generation, especially, our children and grandchildren need all the help, encouragement and prayers they can get to remain committed to Torah learning, and so it behooves us all to do our part, which includes properly reciting Birkot Ha'Torah each morning. The Ateret Zekenim teaches that besides during Birkot Ha'Torah, there are also other places in the morning prayer service where one should pray with special intention that his offspring follow the path of Torah. One is the Beracha of "Ahabat Olam" recited before Shema, where we ask Hashem for the wisdom to properly learn and observe the Torah ("Ve'ten Be'libenu Bina Le'habin U'l'haskil…"). While one recites this prayer, he should have in mind his wish that his children and all his descendants become Torah scholars. And in the "U'ba Le'sion" prayer, we cite the verse in which G-d promises that the words of Torah "shall not leave your mouth, the mouth of your offspring, or the mouth of your offspring's offspring, from now and for all eternity" ("Lo Yamushu Mi'picha U'mi'pi Zar'acha…" – Yeshayahu 59:21). Here, too, one should pray that all his descendants will be devoted students of Torah. Toward the end of "U'ba Le'sion," we ask that Hashem "open our hearts" to learn Torah and to live with love and fear of Him – and one should concentrate at this point on his desire that his children grow to become Sadikim. Rav Yehezkel Landau of Prague (1713-1793) writes that in addition, reciting Birkot Ha'Torah properly, with Kavana, helps us remember the material we learn. Many students of Torah struggle to retain the information, and one way we can help remember what we learn is by paying closer attention to Birkot Ha'Torah each morning and reciting it with feeling and concentration.
