On this episode of the Caught Red Pawdcast, Jesse talks about the turf war between the jocks and the punks in Amarillo, Texas in the 1990s that led to the death of one of the towns most beloved punks, 19 year old Brian Deneke. The punks were considered outcasts in this Texas town that was built on football and cowboys. To get along, you had to go along. And the punks weren't trying to fit in with the crowd. We discuss whether or not the punishment fit the crime and we'd love to hear your thoughts on this.

Brian Deneke was a 19-year old kid in Amarillo, TX who was involved in the punk scene. Dustin Camp was a 17-year old kid in Amarillo TX who was a football player. These 2 worlds collided explosively on December 12, 1997. After a night of heavy drinking, Dustin deliberately ran Brian over with his car, left him to die, and went home to sleep. Dustin was arrested and the trial split a town in two. One side with Brian and the punks, and one with Dustin and the jocks. Unfortunately in this case, nobody wins. In Amarillo, TX during the 1990's there was a building tension between two very distinct subcultures in the town's youth which erupted in a scene of absolute chaos one fateful December night. This murder tore the community of Amarillo apart and the effects still ripple through punk culture today. Brian Deneke's life was stolen. The justice system served a slap in the face to Brian, his memory, and his family, so we must remember him and the message his life can teach us.  Marilyn Manson's speech - he begins speaking about Brian at 6:55 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8RRC0Cvkr4M

This week we will be discussing the murder of Brian Deneke and all drama that goes into this case. It was 1997 and there was a battle going on between the "punks" verses the "jocks". It is strange how just being labeled or associating with a certain group could end up causing your death. Brian was portrayed in the movie "Bomb City" and his story has been documented in countless other shows and specials. When it comes down to it, be nice and take care of each other. Help be apart of the change we need in society. Update to episode: I referenced that Brian's brother was named Mike and that was actually his dad. His brothers name was Jason and I will correct this in the debrief. I messed up my notes and I apologize. Sources for this episode include:Wikipedia - Death of Brian Denekehttps://briandeneke.webs.com

When he died….Brian Deneke was 19 year old…self-proclaimed punk rock kid. And he looked the part. A boy scout in his younger years, he’d traded in his uniform for homemade tattoos, a spiked green mohawk and a spiked collar necklace to match. If he wasn’t wearing black, he was wearing camouflage. And the only time he wore anything other than combat boots and his leather jacket, was when he was skateboarding. His appearance cost him his life. And it cost his family justice.
