Southwest, bag fees and more: The new shape of an airline disruptor

This week we’re talking again about Southwest Airlines, which shocked some of its loyal customers about two weeks ago by getting rid of its long-advertised “bags fly free” perk. But that’s just one in a series of changes Southwest is making that make it seem, well, less like Southwest and more like traditional legacy airlines: Adding extra-legroom seats, eliminating open seating and updating its loyalty strategy. In this episode, host Rebecca Tobin, airlines editor Robert Silk and Hospitio founder Brad Beakley break down some of the changes and ask -- why? How will flyers benefit? What else does Southwest need to do to compete with the Big Three? And what will it take for Southwest to retain the “love?” This episode was recorded March 21 and has been edited for length and clarity. We had the pleasure of interviewing Slow Joy over Zoom video!Slow Joy, the solo project of Dallas based, New Mexican born Chicano artist Esteban Flores, is thrilled to announce his first official US headline tour. The February 2025 run has Flores out supporting his Mi Amigo Slow Joy EP, which was released June 7th, 2024 via Mick Music. Produced by Mike Sapone (Oso Oso, The Front Bottoms), the EP earned Slow Joy the “Best New Band” designation in the Dallas Observer's Annual “Best of Dallas” roundup and drew comparisons to The Pixies, Modest Mouse and Smashing Pumpkins.Slow Joy spent all of the fall on the road supporting Real Friends alongside Can't Swim and Carly Cosgrove on their Forever And Ever and Ever And Ever And Ever And Ever And Ever Tour. The two month long tour visited most every major city across the US and was Slow Joy's biggest trek to date. Mi Amigo Slow Joy follows 2023's Wildflower EP. The new EP was extremely well received, with FLOOD writing, “...the EP is a celebration of the past three decades of alternative rock music condensed into something more broadly appealing than any of Nevermind's non-single tracks.” The Chicago Reader described the Mi Amigo Slow Joy EP as “...melanges of grungy shoegaze.” And KXT 91.7 said the EP features “crunchy, alt-rock-inflected soundscapes [with] searching, vulnerable lyrics.” Flores' growth as a songwriter and musician can be heard throughout the four new tracks, an accomplishment he credits Sapone for helping him to achieve.Slow Joy is currently working with Sapone on his debut album, due in early 2025. As genuinely friendly and caring as a person can get, she lived up to the term “Good Samaritan” and offered to deliver a note to the motorist's friends after spending two hours waiting with her. We welcome the beautiful and amazing Linda Septien who is truly one of the best voice instructors in the world. She is the CEO and Founder of Septien Entertainment Group in Addison, Tx.She has over 35+ years of experience, whose success is measured by the number of successful pop icons she has prepared, trained and helped launch into thriving careers. Named on the cover of the Dallas Observer as the “Kingpin of Pop Talent, Linda is the forefront authority on all phases of launching an artist's career including vocal technique, vocal disorders, vocal production, stage presence, vocal branding and viral marketing for all ages of artists. With over 17,287 students to her legacy, including branded icons Demi Lovato, Selena Gomez, Kacey Musgraves, Kidz Bop, Ryan Cabrera, Leon Bridges and Jessica Simpson, among other “cash producing” artists, Linda prides herself on her ability to recognize talent & create an effective development strategy to launch a branded long term career artist.Linda was born and raised in Louisiana by a family of musicians and her now 96 year old mother who still performs Ragtime. She has a nephew who is in a band called Midlake that is signed on the Tupac Label. Both her sons Remington and Huntington are musicians as well. Linda tells us what it means to be an opera singer and that they hire you by your voice. She travelled all throughout Italy and Croatia and became a DIVA! Thinking she was all that in her late 20's she returned to Nashville and decided to record a commercial pop album, only to be told by the producer that she was absolutely terrible. He told her to become a Diesel Sniffer "GROUPIE" to learn what it truly takes. She toured with N'Sync for a while, Rolling Stones and anyone she could find - she started studying all the artists in detail and she wrote books on why the audience looked at these Stars and what caused that phenomenon. While she studied all these people she realized that this was not her at all and decided to teach and give all her knowledge to others instead. She tells us about The "IT" factor and how things change in music and gives us the example of Dance Monkey who put an effect on her voice and it became the Number 1 song worldwide for an entire year. Linda made her home in Dallas because her ex husband Rafael Septien, who she met in college was signed with the Dallas Cowboys. They were together for 15 years. She started teaching out of her home and then opened a small studio. Jessica Simpson was one of her first students whose Dad brought her to Linda because Jessica was the only one that didn't make the Mickey Mouse Club audition. At the time Christina Aguilera, Justin Timberlake, Jay-Z and Britney Spears had all made it. We learn all about Jessica's start in the Christian Music Industry and why the Christian audience didn't accept her. We hear about a mishap that happened to her during her opening performance for Ricky Martin in Madison Square Garden. Working with Colombia and Sony Records made Linda really well known and she got Beyonce and everyone that Sony was using back then. What really put her on the map was Daniel Coile who wrote the New York Bestseller TALENT CODE, who was at her studio for 6 weeks to study how she creates and teaches these amazing artists. They were on Nightline and PR took over and because her story was the most interesting they got the most PR and attention. Everyone needs to read the book. Linda says that if her students don't have the work ethic there is not much she can do. She can tell them everything she knows but ultimately they still have to do all the work. She tells us about a studentthat was the most talented she has ever had, who refused to do the extra work and she tore up her contract and stopped working with her. Linda talks about Matthew McConaughey book GREEN LIGHTS and that everyone needs to listen to it on audible and it will make you successful. In today's world you have to have personality to go along with your musical talent and that the ones that are most successful are the ones that do not care about what others think. That is what it takes. Linda has sang the National Anthem over 1000 times at Dallas Mavericks and Dallas Stars games to mention a few. stay tuned to Part 2 where we talk about The other side of Fame, the Metaverse, NFT's, Demi Lavato etc ..................

You may remember Salim as our guest in Episode 40 and our discussion about one of the most consequential records in our lifetime and beyond, The White Album. As a solo artist, Nourallah has long mined the terrain between catchy and devastating. Rolling Stone called him “a singer-songwriter who can stop time.” As a producer and owner of Pleasantry Lane in Dallas, Nourallah has worked notably with the Old 97's, Rhett Miller, the Deathray Davies, and the Damnwells. His work on either side of the sound booth has won an armful of Dallas Observer music awards and proven that some musicians actually do get better with age.Our conversation today will focus on British singer/songwriter Stephen Duffy and his second solo offering from 1995 titled “Duffy” which was originally released on Indolent Records. (No? Just Becky, then? Okay.) How are Merie's immunosuppressant drugs related to her decision to go on the lam following a murder spree? Do YOU want to choose who Becky kills on national TV in order to fulfill her Barkley list? (Email her at fearless@nowfear.com!) Why is Merie threatening Becky with turning around and showing Becky her flannel shirt collection?

Welcome to the second part of this series about the Murray-O'Hair family. After Madalyn, Jon Garth, and Robin mysteriously vanished in September 1995, a year went by without any further investigation. It wasn't until a reporter began asking questions that the story finally got the attention it deserved. In this episode we'll discuss how the case was unraveled, and the clues involve a hundred pounds of gold coins, a perfect diamond, unlikely heroes, and finally, the discovery of the truth after a 5-year hunt for answers.Sources:Bryce, R. From the 1960s and into the 1990s, Madalyn Murray O'Hair was the voice and face of atheism in the United States. Madalyn's closest partners in her business dealings, legal battles, and life were her youngest son Jon Garth Murray and her granddaughter Robin Murray. When the three went missing in September of 1995 under suspicious circumstances, local law enforcement, family, even friends were slow to respond. This is part one of a two-part story describing what happened when “the most hated woman in America” and her family disappeared. Sources:Bryce, R. (1998, November 20). Abducted by aliens? After a night out at a Deep Ellum nightclub with friends, 20-year-old Christina “Chris” Gill vanished. Her car was discovered in the apartment complex in North Dallas, not far from another club Chris and her friends had also been to the last night she was seen. For months, the Gill Family spared no expense in their efforts to find the missing young woman but not even the Dallas Police could come up with any solid leads. Since Chris disappeared only months after another North Dallas woman, 19-year-old Ashley Fuller Reed, the cops theorized a connection. Seven months after she was seen leaving the club On the Rocks in Deep Ellum, the body of Chris Gill was found, and the nature of the discovery only further confused the investigation. If you have any information about the murder of Christina Marie Gill, please call Texas Crime Stoppers at (800)252-TIPS or (800)252-8477.Please consider attending the Day of Remembrance for Leon Laureles in Brown County on May 14th, 2022, from 1 to 4 PM. It's easy to defend speech you agree with. But the fight for free speech truly begin when you support someone with whom you disagree. Which makes this conversation I had with professor Michael Phillips particularly significant. Michael Phillips is a history professor at Collin College in McKinney, Texas. He spoke out about the College's response to the pandemic on his personal social media. According to the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education (FIRE), "In reference to the College's decision to open for in-person learning in the fall of 2020, Phillips posted, '[T]hat feeling when your employer doesn't value your health and safety.' Phillips also publicly shared a slide in which College faculty were told they could not request, require, or recommend wearing masks at the beginning of the fall 2021 term. Phillips later recommended masking in a history course covering the history of pandemics and preventative measures. Ultimately, Collin College terminated Phillips, citing his speech." Professor Phillips is suing the college, with the help of FIRE, on the grounds that the college violated Professor Phillips' First Amendment right to free speech. Award-winning investigative journalist, media critic, and activist Barrett Brown joins me to discuss Silicon Valley billionaire and venture capitalist Peter Thiel. He describes the complex web of media outlets and personalities, hackers, and intelligence community assets connected directly or indirectly with Thiel — a powerful, enormously well-resourced figure aiming to undermine the last remnants of democracy and the open society. Barrett Brown is a writer and activist. His work has appeared in Vanity Fair, The Guardian, The Intercept, Huffington Post, New York Press, Skeptic, The Daily Beast, Al Jazeera, and other outlets. In 2009, he founded Project PM, a “distributed think tank” later repurposed to oversee a crowdsourced investigation into private intelligence contractors and little-known surveillance/disinformation methodologies. In 2011 and 2012, he worked with Anonymous on campaigns involving the Tunisian revolution, state misconduct, and other issues. In 2012, Brown was arrested and later sentenced to four years in federal prison on charges stemming from his investigations into HBGary, Stratfor, Palantir, Archimedes, and other firms that would later be implicated in election interference operations in the US and UK. While imprisoned, he won the National Magazine Award and other journalism and writing honors for his column, “The Barrett Brown Review of Arts and Letters and Prison.” Upon his release in late 2016, he established the non-profit Pursuance to develop a platform for mass civic engagement and to promote his doctrine of non-institutional “process democracy.” His third book, ‘My Glorious Defeats,' is available for pre-order from Farrar, Straus and Giroux. DEV WULF The story of the native Houstonian begins with his hometown as the opening backdrop for a long journey in musical identity. From playing in bars on Saturdays and churches on Sundays, the Texicana frontman would gain a versatile understanding of multiple genres spanning from rock, hip-hop, blues, and country. Since his move to Dallas in 2008, the Americana singer would go on to open for national acts including Shane McDonald, Leagues, Grace Potter, Devon Gilfillian, Black Joe Lewis, Sir Earl Toon (Kool & the Gang), and Grady Spencer & the Work while performing with the band and as himself. While continuing his active work with Texicana, he is currently sitting in as a lead guitarist and vocalist for rapper, Moses Uvere. TEXICANA! “What would happen if we started a band together?” As Chris J Norwood and Dev Wulf recall, that's the resonating question at a round table in an old East Dallas bar; just audibly above an old cash-operated jukebox. Lakewood Landing would be the birthplace of a new idea between a trio of musicians and a few beers. The buzzing room of ideas would later evolve into an Americana outfit with joining members, Chris Pitts and Kelly Huffman, offering a unique rhythm section drawing from folk, rock, country, and jazz. Starting with little known icons, Big Star and Mudcrutch as influencing introductions, Texicana's early releases gave insight to their creative beginning with cover tunes, followed by their debut EP, No Good Reason. The Dallas Observer describes Texicana's nostalgic Americana and bluesy rock “as good for the soul,” during a time when COVID-19 closed down the country. Their latest offering, “Little Bit of Trouble,” continues to offer that good-for-the-soul feeling with songs that, as Central Track put it, “…feel like a trip down Elm Street with the windows down.” Texicana has gone on to win Best Folk & Americana Act and Best New Act of 2020 by the Dallas e-magazine Central Track, nominated Best Americana Act by the Dallas Observer, and winner of 91.7 KXT's Tiny Cake Contest. They've shared the stage with national acts Grace Potter, Devon Gilfillian, Black Joe Lewis, Southern Avenue, and Grady Spencer & The Work. Their EP, “Little Bit of Trouble,” is the latest to be released by Texicana and is available digitally wherever music is available.
