Joseph formed the Los Angeles-based Walking Theatre Group in 1992 to explore the use of the WIYS method in dramatic arts. CONTENT HEADS UP: This episode may inspire you to give the practice of “Walking-In-Your-Shoes” a go on your own. We waive all responsibility for any ensuing mishaps of cramped spaces, being near stairs or inspired bouts of wild and/or naked abandon. On a more serious note, we do discuss heavy subjects like trauma, armoring, drowning, rape and PTSD. But predominantly, we delve into the healing power and intelligence of the body invited into highly conscious motion and given free-reign and guidance to express all that it knows. Also, Walking-In-Your-Shoes can be done just as effectively from a wheelchair or with the capacities of any perambulatory disability. You just have to be a body with the desire to follow how it's guiding you to feel, see and know. This episode presents a departure from our previous episodes. As in some of our upcoming episodes, we focus here on a specific practice and its transformative techniques aimed at unlocking conscious awareness of the body's intelligence. While past episodes delved into the philosophical underpinnings of embodiment, this installment offers practical guidance on tangible methods to access your inner knowledge as an opportunity for revelation and growth.SYNOPSIS:Ali discusses a movement-based mindfulness practice called “The Walking-In-Your-Shoes” (WIYS) mind-body process with one of its co-founders, actor and director, Joseph Culp. WIYS is a process that allows the practitioner, in partnership with a facilitator, to address questions or needs through an intuitive questioning of the body-mind through movement. The applications of the questioning process are quite broad and can be applied to everything from healing trauma and managing addiction, to business development or a more organic method of acting. This is another means of “knowing” through your body. Ali and Joseph discuss the overlap between WIYS and Family Constellation Work and how both practices allow others to help take on and process trauma or healing on the behalf of another person. EXPLORATION POINTS:- Joseph & Ali discuss the intersections between the Walking-In-Your-Shoes (WIYS) body-mind process and Family Constellation Work. The episode explores how both practices facilitate the process of addressing questions or needs through intuitive questioning of and attention to the body-mind through movement.- The episode highlights Joseph Culp's personal growth as an actor through his involvement in WIYS. Culp discusses how this movement-based mindfulness practice has contributed to his development as an artist, providing insights into the transformative power of the practice.- Joseph Culp and Ali discuss the concept of "Walking for Others". The exploration involves understanding how facilitators can embody and navigate the experiences of others through movement, emphasizing the empathetic and therapeutic aspects of Walking in someone else's shoes.-  Joseph and Ali explore the therapeutic potential of WIYS for individuals grappling with severe trauma or PTSD. Discussing how the intuitive questioning of the body-mind through movement, coupled with the empathetic support of a facilitator and sometimes a group, offers a unique avenue for addressing and healing deep-seated traumas. - Joseph offers insights into how Wilhelm Reich's ideas have shaped WIYS, contributing to its foundation, while also exploring how Alexander Lowen's contributions informed the practice of following the body towards liberation. This exploration provides a comprehensive understanding of the historical and theoretical roots that form the intellectual, and practical, lineage of WIYS.To subscribe now, click hereTo be an angel to the podcast, click here To read more about the podcast, click here FOR MORE ALI MEZEY:Ali - Website:Personal Geometry® and the Magic of Mat Work Course information:Transgenerational Healing Films:FOR MORE JOSEPH CULP:BIO: Joseph Culp is an actor, director and filmmaker, working in theater, film and television for over 40 years. There are four types of discourse in language- descriptive, narrative, expository and argumentative. And it seems that all four of those are readily present in any niche interest group on the internet these days. Anything from the way a machine works (descriptive), the exact timeline of Tolkien's world building (narrative), someone breaking down the latest universe development in a comic-book based film (expository), and argumentative which that one goes without example. If you need one, go to twitter. On the note of argumentative, some may disagree with this next statement, but the difference between good discourse and bad discourse depends on the presence of resources. Resources establish credibility in ones' opinion and or points. They inform subsequent works, and if you're bibliography and research nerd, they are excellent road maps to other sources of information that you can sink your teeth into. Really exciting stuff, I know. But, when those resources aren't made readily available, that's where discourse breaks down. Without them, there's a few formal problems, like credibility and the questioning of objectivity. Mainly, the problem- is without resources how were you able to effectively formulate your contribution to the discussion at hand, and why should others participate with you.One of the key ways we talk about music with musicians, is by asking about their influences. Influences tell us so much about who we're speaking with and how they developed. They give us a way to describe an artist's sound. Influences tell the story of formative discovery. They give us a timeline of the kinds of music that shaped an artist in different eras. Influences allow us to argue what was ultimately important in flows of time and culture. See where I'm going with this? Musical influences are just one part, but a big one in terms of musical resources.Artists don't owe us that information. We know that. "What are your influences?" Is a boring question and its asked in pretty much every interview. They can keep their secrets, but its nice when that door is open.Which brings us to this episode's guests- The Boxmasters. The Boxmasters is made up of Bill Bob Thornton and JD Andrews. Thornton and Andrews in 2007 when Thornton brought in Andrews as a sound engineer for his 2007 record "Beautiful Door".  The two found that the had similar approaches and views of music and started playing together somewhat regularly. After some time, the two began recording and eventually created their band "The Boxmasters" the name comes from southern slang referring to a hotshot with echoes of Porter Wagoners "The Wagonmasters" which Thornton had previously played in for a time. Since 2007, the group has toured extensively with the likes of Willie Nelson and Ray Price, taking a break between 2010-2015 where they reconvened to make the record "Somewhere Down the Road". The released their latest album "Help Im Alive" in April of 2022 (when this interview was recorded). The Boxmasters do not shy away from their influences and what the build their sound on. Pulling from groups like The Beatles, The Rolling Stone, Mott and the Hoople- the duo works to echo the sounds the personally loved from the 60's and 70's- whilst also giving it a somewhat more southern edge with original lyrics.. all topped off with classic Bakersfield like production. And neither Andrews or Thornton will shy away from telling you as such.

Hello and welcome to episode 58 of Sing! Dance! Act! Thrive! How is everyone doing with the ending of 2020? For me, I’m trying to work on my mindset for the changes I want to make in 2021 and all that I want to accomplish. I’ve hit a point in my life that I’m not letting anything stop me from achieving my goals. And by anything I mean myself. We stop ourselves in so many ways, don’t we? We don’t always acknowledge it as such though. Often the things that we procrastinate on, dismiss as not important, or avoid altogether are the very things we should be facing head-on.Before we get to the interview with Mel, I share some vulnerabilities I have and am working on with the help of fabulous coaches to inspire you to look at your own issues that may be blocking you from achieving your goals. If you are an actor, maybe setting yourself up to self-tape auditions is something you are procrastinating on. I was excited to interview Mel Mack, Casting Director and Founder of Mel Mack Acting Studio in New York City… WOW we had such a great conversation on how the Acting Industry has evolved this year. You may have had to submit your audition as a self-tape occasionally in the past, but now lit’rally ALL your auditions AND callbacks are being handled remotely via self-tape. Even if you’re not an Actor, I betcha a basket of cute kittens that you’re spending a lot more time on camera, eh? Having a killer self-tape that looks and sounds professional reflects right back on your personal professionalism, and boy has Mel seen more than her fair share of disappointing self-tape submissions from Actors who she *knows* are so much better than their self-tape would suggest.
