We are joined on the podcast for this episode by two guests from the Royal Air Force's Battle of Britain Memorial Flight (BBMF), Squadron Leader Mark Sugden, OC BBMF and Flight Lieutenant Seb Davey, Bomber Leader. In an enthralling session Mark and Seb answer our questions about the Flight and talk us through what representing the RAF's volunteer historical unit involves, what sets the BBMF apart from both the wider service and civilian operators and how you go from flying an A400M Atlas to an Avro Lancaster. Dave Homewood from the Wings Over New Zealand podcast took on the almighty task of a 35-day tour of as many UK aviation heritage locations as he could squeeze in. All in the spirit of recording a new podcast series called the Wings Over Britain! The first few episodes are already out, and they bring a fresh view of the sector from an avid enthusiast but also from an advocate (in Dave) for keeping alive the stories and memories of those who operated and flew these aircraft. Hear Dave's view of how lucky we are in the UK to have such a rich source of aviation history right on our doorstep. Earlier today the Irish Air Corps celebrated a special centenary Veterans' Days in Casement Aerodrome, Baldonnel. As part of the event the Royal Air Force 'Battle of Britain Memorial Flight', accompanied by the Irish aerobatic display team 'The Silver Swallows', flew in formation across Dublin City and landed at Casement Aerodrome. The VVIP guest for the event was proud Irish man, Group Captain (Retired) John ‘Paddy' Hemingway (Distinguished Flying Cross), a Battle of Britain Pilot who flew with distinction during World War 2. In Casement Aerodrome, John was reunited with a Hurricane Aircraft, the same type he flew in WW2. On its arrival, the Hurricane came to a stop and powered up its engines so that the wartime pilot could see, hear and smell what he called his 'office' throughout WW2. John is a resident in South Co. Dublin and celebrated his 103rd birthday this week. The Chief of Staff of the Irish Defence Forces, Lieutenant General Seán Clancy and Royal Air Forces Deputy Commander Operations Sir Rich Knighton and General Officer Commanding the Irish Air Corps, Brigadier General Rory O'Connor were in attendance along with a range of other invited guests and veterans. We hear from the BBMF Crew and the IAC Silver Swallows. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
The team are finally back together as a foursome in the studio - well, not quite the studio but backstage at GLive in Guildford just before Roy takes to the stage on the Surrey leg of his SFG 2021 tour.In this episode we discuss all things BBMF and Lancaster after our 2020 tour to Lincolnshire. James was asked about bang seats, Jez's quick facts had to be quick - as the support band were just about to start kicking out some beats; and the quiz made a triumpant* return. Plus we hear a snippet from our interview with ex Wessex pilot and current BBMF Bomber Lead Flt Lt Neil 'Faz' Farrell.*Triumphant in Rob's view - no one else was impressed - nor will you be!
With the Avro Lancaster celebrating its 80th anniversary in 2021, what better time to feature this iconic aircraft on Top Landing Gear. The whole of series three is built around TLG’s road trip to Bomber County, Lincolnshire, which is the base not only for the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight and their Lancaster, PA474 ‘City of Lincoln’, but also for another very special Lancaster which could be joining the BBMF Lanc in the skies in the not too distant future. The aircraft in question is NX611 ‘Just Jane’, which is being restored to flight at the Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Centre at East Kirkby. It is already providing taxy runs for the public, and the hope is that one day it will carry passengers aloft in what would be the experience of a lifetime. The man behind this thrilling project is Andrew Panton, and he is our guest in this Full Flaps edition. He tells us the very personal story of how the whole thing started and just what is involved in getting a World War II heavy bomber back into the skies. There’s lots more going on at East Kirkby too, and over the course of this two-parter Andrew fills us in on everything that they’re striving to achieve. In Part II Roy, James, Jez and Rob were lucky enough to climb aboard Just Jane on the move and share their boyish excitement about getting up close and personal with not just one, but two historic WWII aircraft at this wonderful wartime airfield.
We’re delighted to be back with a brand new series of podcasts. This series is built around our recent trip to Lincolnshire, Bomber County, and our visits to the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight and Typhoon Squadrons at RAF Coningsby, our Dam Busters tour at RAF Scampton, our microlight and gliding adventures, and a dinner to remember at our base for the trip, The Petwood Hotel, which was once the Officers’ Mess for 617 Squadron, the Dam Busters. But our first episode is all about the Avro Lancaster, which celebrates its 80th anniversary this year, and about one Lancaster in particular, NX611 ‘Just Jane’, which is being restored to flight at the Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Centre at East Kirkby. Our special guest is Andrew Panton, the man behind this exciting project. We also have all our usual features, including Ask James and Jez’s Quick Facts, and there’s quite a turn up for the books in the outcome of the hugely popular and always highly anticipated Top Landing Gear Quiz. Plus Roy updates us on his impressive progress in going for his microlight licence, but embarrassingly admits that when he was taken for an adrenaline flight in an aerobatic Eagle biplane, he asked to go home early. It’s a crying shame. Despite that, we do hope you enjoy listening. It can only get better…
Were the Allies' best Airborne troops really dropped on D-Day by the worst trained crews? Matt is joined by historian Adam Berry and the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight's Dakota pilot Flt Lt Seb Davey to look at the men and machines of the IX Troop Carrier Command.
Here we see an immaculate DHC-1 Chipmunk, in a 'modified' version of a Chipmunk of the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, the Royal Air Force's last user of the classic Canadian-designed trainer.
September 2014 As part of our annual Veteran’s Reunion this year there was a fly past by a Hurricane of the RAF’s Battle of Britain Memorial Flight. 14,533 Hurricanes had been built by the end of World War 2, but sadly, today, there are only 12 still airworthy worldwide; only 6 of those in UK. The BBMF is proud to operate two of these historically important and rare aircraft. Episode Six of UKAR's iTunes smash is a fitting way to round off Display Frequency's first year. Dan O'Hagan travelled to RAF Coningsby in early December to produce a show featuring the past and present of our nation's air power. First, we meet the 2013 Typhoon display pilot, Flt Lt Jamie Norris, who reveals plenty about what's gone into the most eagerly-anticipated RAF fast jet routine in years. Though "off-limits" for our recorded chat, Display Frequency was talked through the new display, and can report that it promises to be the Typhoon display we've all waited for! Next, we move over to Coningsby's Aladdin's Cave, the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight hangar, to meet new Officer Commanding BBMF Sqn Ldr Duncan Mason, as well as an in-depth look at the restoration of the Flight's newest toy - Spitfire XVI TE311. Plus, the BBMF's Public Relations Officer Yvonne Masters explains how the latest social media trends are keeping the Flight in the public eye. A full show to see out 2012! As promised, here’s the interview with Syd Marshall. Syd is a volunteer guide at the Battle of Britain memorial Flight museum, and what a great interview it turned out to be. I wasn’t expecting to meet a WW2 Lancaster crew member so it was not only a pleasant surprise, for me, but Syd had some great stories to tell about his time as a flight engineer on Lancaster bombers.
An interview with several of the staff at the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight based at RAF Coningsby. I spoke with Yvonne Masters, the PR Officer and a couple of the engineers lucky enough to work on the Spitfires, Hurricanes, Lancaster, Dakota and Chipmunks.
