In this episode, host Helen Angus, CEO of AMS Healthcare, speaks with Dr. Nicola Mercer. Dr. Nicola Mercer (MD MBA MPH FRCPC C. Dir) is the Medical Officer of Health and CEO of Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Public Health. Before joining Public Health in 2007, she spent 15 years as an anesthesiologist and critical care physician. She is currently a Board member at Public Health Ontario sitting on the Audit Finance and Risk Standing Committee. She is also a past member of the Royal College of Physician and Surgeons nominating committee, and the University of Guelph Board of Trustees. In 2017, Dr. Mercer was appointed to the Minister of Health's Expert Panel on Public Health. For her work during the pandemic, she was recognized with a Municipal World Women of Influence in Local Government Award in 2021, and a King Charles III Coronation Medal in 2024.

Community leaders recently called a crisis hui after an apparent spike in recreational use of the gas with dozens of empty cannisters being discarded, locally. On the UL podcast, we believe that leadership can happen with and without formal authority. Sometimes, the most challenging leadership role is leading up to a person who technically has more formal authority, but might be unintentionally causing some of the chaos you are trying to address. In this episode, we'll learn from two examples from different contexts but have very similar patterns for how to lead up to what we affectionately call "Chaos Monsters." In one case, Jesse shares his experience as a volunteer leader working within a non-profit civic organization with a charismatic executive director who is asking for increased operational structure ... and yet sometimes working in exact opposition. In the other case, Jesse will share his experience as an officer in the National Guard working in a matrixed command military structure to achieve particular mission readiness objectives ... and yet encounters higher ranking officers who sometimes contradict their own directives. Both examples sound totally different - one volunteer non profit, the other an officer in the military. And yet both illustrate similar patterns of how to lead up effectively. By day, Dr. Jesse Mix is a primary care and ER physician at the Veterans Administration (VA) Medical Center in Boise, ID. In the evenings, he volunteers across a few community/civic organizations (which shall remain nameless). And as a National Guardsman, Lt. Col Jesse Mix is the Flight Surgeon/Medical Officer to an elite Pararescue (PJ) squadron within the US Air Force. He is also the past President of the Leadership Boise program. Episode: 2674 The Royal Navy Surgeon; Taking Medicine to Sea in the Age of Sail.  Today, the Royal Navy Surgeon.

Niall qualified as a doctor from Trinity College, Dublin in 1993. He trained as a surgeon in Belfast and received his FRCSI in 1997. He was a trainee in cardio-thoracic surgery working as an SHO in the Royal Victoria Hospital, Belfast before returning to Dublin where he worked as a registrar in the National Cardiac Surgery Unit in the Mater Hospital and Our Lady's Children's Hospital, Crumlin.He subsequently retrained as an airline pilot with Aer Lingus in 1999 and combined aviation with medicine by working as an Accident & Emergency doctor for six years before focusing fully on aviation. After operating as a co-pilot on both the European and Trans-Atlantic fleets, he qualified as a captain in 2010. He is currently operating out of their Manchester base on the Airbus A330 Trans-Atlantic fleet. In 2011, Niall formed Frameworkhealth Ltd, a company providing aviation-style safety training modified specifically for healthcare which draws on his thirty-five years of experience between both industries. The company has since evolved into Framework Safety Group Ltd. This project aims to share aviation's Safety Management System blended with Human Factors and Evolutionary Psychology with healthcare and other industries in order to address the huge issue of Adverse Events, usually caused by systemic faults but often blamed on the last individual to have touched the ball. Niall aims to encourage industries, especially healthcare to adopt a Just Culture, embed a systemic Human Factors approach and empower staff, patients and their families to speak up as part of the crew. His approach is based on the premise that technology and society have evolved faster in the last century than the human brain can accommodate so we need to adapt to account for this in order to reduce the number of adverse events. He has spoken at many conferences locally, nationally and internationally on the topic.Niall has contributed articles both to specialist journals and national newspapers such as The Irish Times. He has also given interviews for national television including RTE TV News and Virgin Media and has been interviewed several times on BBC Radio. In 2016, Niall was appointed an Expert Advisor to the Northern Ireland Executive's Dept of Health following a well received TEDx talk in Stormont's Great Hall.Niall cycled at national level for thirteen years and at pro-am international level for several years in the early 90s and was a member of Northern Ireland's Commonwealth Games panel. He subsequently worked as Medical Officer for both the Federation of Irish Cyclists (now Cycling Ireland) and the Ulster Cycling Federation. He also worked as a Race Doctor at international level for six years.In 2023, Niall had his first book, ‘Oops! Why Things Go Wrong' published which explored the increasingly topical issue of error across industry and society generally and most importantly, how to address it. The book is already in it's second print run after a higher than anticipated demand.The success of the book has led to many invitations from outside healthcare, hence Frameworkhealth's evolution into Framework Safety Group Ltd in recognition of this broadening scope.

A Wellington school is going against official advice telling some students to stay at home while their measles vacination status is confirmed after an infected person was at a prize giving. Meanwhile a national primary school's Kapa Haka event with more than 60 groups from 17 different regions is underway in Tauranga this week. Wellington Girls College is asking years 9 to 11 students to stay home while their immunisation status is checked. The move contradicts official advice from the Ministry of Education - that the students should be in class. Dr. Arup Roy-Burman, Founder and Chief Strategy and Medical Officer of Elemeno Health, is addressing the gap between established medical policies and actual frontline practice. And on top of that, in the context of constantly changing staff, medicine is full of so many different practices, workflows, and procedures, and we expect our staff to know all of them and to be able to execute on each one of them at the time that they need to. But that's really unrealistic. There's no way that people can stay on top of it. All medical knowledge doubles every 73 days."   "When we think about today's generational workforce, as we think about just those of us who have kids, we see that attention spans, as you said, are short. People don't want to sit through a whole classroom. They can't remember that. And the way that people want to learn now and the way that they do learn, it's like one of our clients put it, it's like the "TikTokification of education." How do we deliver information on a mobile device? How do we deliver it in short, bite-sized chunks? Ordóñez, M.D., M.A.S., is the Director of the Office of Clinical Research (OCR) at the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) in the United States. With over a decade of experience at NIMH, she has held key roles including Director and Deputy Director of OCR, as well as Medical Officer of the NIMH Intramural Child Psychiatry Branch. Previously, she was the Medical Director of the Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at San Francisco General Hospital and Assistant Adjunct Professor at UCSF. Anna is trained as an Adult, Child and Adolescent Psychiatrists and holds a Master of Advanced Studies in Clinical Research with an emphasis on Implementation Science. She has dedicated her career to conducting and overseeing mental health clinical research studies, with a particular interest in global mental health and implementation of evidence based mental health interventions in limited resource settings. Dr Ayesha Mian is the founder and CEO of Synapse, Pakistan Neuroscience Institute. She is the immediate past Chair, Department of Psychiatry (2013-2020), Aga Khan University and the Founding Dean of Students of the Office of Student Experience (2017-2020), AKU. Dr Mian created the first child and adolescent psychiatry fellowship training program in Pakistan. She has been internationally recognised for her work; key awards include the Jeanna Spurlock Award for Diversity and Culture by AACAP, the Laughlin Fellowship by American College of Psychiatrist (ACP), Presidential Award and Outstanding Mentor by AACAP, Robert Fellowship for Inspirational Mentorship (AAP), Fulbright and Jaworski Awards in Educational Leadership by BCM and a Lifetime Achievement Award by the University of Missouri, Department of Psychiatry.

Dr. Eric Siemers, Medical Officer at Acumen Pharma, is developing a monoclonal antibody called sabirnetug that targets a specific toxic form of amyloid beta, Aβ oligomers. These oligomers are now believed to be a key driver of neuronal damage in Alzheimer's disease. The drug is in phase 2 clinical trials to evaluate its ability to slow cognitive decline in early-stage Alzheimer's patients and demonstrate the accuracy of biomarkers in identifying pathology before symptoms appear.   Eric explains, "We've identified, and this is a monoclonal antibody, a monoclonal antibody with a unique mechanism of action in that it targets what are called Aβ oligomers. And without going into all the details, these Aβ oligomers are now really felt to be the toxic species, the ones that cause the neurons to die, and the two drugs that have recently gotten approval sort of indirectly get at those toxic species, maybe one more than the other. But in our case, we're directly targeting what we think is the most toxic species. And so the progress in the field is wonderful, and nobody can say that it's not, or take anything away from that, but nobody's cured the disease either. Now we know we've got a toehold, we know an approach, and Acumen is using an antibody because of this unique target. We think of it as a next-generation treatment for Alzheimer's disease." "We've known about these Alzheimer's plaques for a long time, but what's more recent is understanding some of these intermediate species. And so these Aβ oligomers we target are oligo, meaning a few. So, anywhere from 2 to 200 of these Aβ stuck together. The Aβs are basically inherently sticky.
