Clare's Aontú rep claims new e-scooter regulations will be pointless without an adequate Garda presence to ensure their enforcement. It comes as the Government is considering tougher e-scooter safety rules following a rise in serious injuries, including among children. Plans under review include compulsory helmets and high-visibility jackets, along with stronger enforcement of speed limits and the existing ban on under-16s. Chair of the Safer Clare Campaign, June Dillon, says while the legislation looks good in principle, it will prove to be futile without an increase in Garda numbers to impose the laws.
Harry McGee, political correspondent with the Irish Times, reports on the options being considered by the government to increase safety in relation to the use of e-scooters.
An “aggressive” drive to tighten e-scooter laws will soon begin in light of the growing number of serious injuries being reported, including three fatalities last year. We discussed further with Shane O'Donoghue, Editor of CompleteCar.ie.

It seems to be common enough for tourists to ride these public e-scooters coming home from bars and clubs while on holidays. We've found that people have been caught riding them under the influence in Germany, where you can expect to receive a fine of up to 1,500 euro if you're caught.People also mentioned getting caught by police in Greece for reckless e –scooter driving. Joining Pat with more on this was Ger Herbert, Motoring Editor for Sunday Independent.

The Faculty of Paediatrics at the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland is calling for urgent action as e-scooter accidents have now become the leading cause of traumatic brain injury among children, according to a new report. We discuss further with Dr Irwin Gill, Consultant Paediatrician, Fellow of the Faculty of Paediatrics and co- author of the paper.
Doctors have described the number of children presenting with brain injuries due to e-scooter accidents as “alarming”.There are ongoing calls for better implementation of regulations around the use of e-scooters and one of those looking for more restrictions is Dublin City Councillor for the South Inner-City Danny Byrne. He joins Ciara Doherty to discuss.
E-scooters could be on the move into the bike lane if the government has its way. At the moment low powered e-scooters can be ridden on the footpath and also on the road, but not in dedicated cycle lanes. ACC figures show claims for e-scooter injuries have almost doubled in five years. National MP Catherine Wedd, who believes the rules are outdated and dangerous, spoke to Lisa Owen.
The Government's move to shift e-scooter users from the sidewalk to bike lanes is being hailed as a win for common-sense. ACC statistics for e-scooter injuries this year are close to surpassing $14 million. There were also more than two thousand claims for e-scooter related injuries in the first half of this year. Flamingo Scooters Co-Creator Jacksen Love told Mike Hosking it clears up confusion. He says bike lanes are clearly a lot safer than the road and helps keep footpaths clear for pedestrians. Kids are begging for e-scooters and e-bikes this Christmas—but the rise in catastrophic injuries tells a very different story. In this episode, Dr Justin Coulson breaks down the shocking stats, the hidden dangers, and the conversations every parent must have before saying yes. This is the episode every parent needs to hear before heading to the checkout. KEY POINTS Emergency departments are seeing a surge in serious e-scooter injuries—many life-threatening. Speed, illegal modifications, and lack of helmets are driving the spike. Developmentally, most kids and young teens are not ready for the risks. Laws vary widely across Australia and haven’t caught up to the tech. Pros vs cons: independence vs genuinely dangerous speeds and environments. What parents can do: age limits, non-negotiable rules, and real-world consequences. QUOTE OF THE EPISODE “Right now we’re running a massive, uncontrolled experiment on our kids’ safety.” RESOURCES MENTIONED Local state road rules for e-bikes and e-scooters Happy Families resources at happyfamilies.com.au ACTION STEPS FOR PARENTS Delay the purchase—ideally until at least age 16. Start small: ensure your child can safely handle a standard bike/scooter first. Set iron-clad rules: helmets, no doubling, no night riding, no road riding, no phone use. Inspect regularly for illegal modifications or unsafe setups. Have the big conversation: talk openly about risks, responsibility, and real-world consequences. Use meaningful, consistent consequences when rules are broken.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Irish doctors have called for “prioritisation” of further e-scooter regulations after a new study found there was a year-on-year increase in injuries related to the motorized vehicles. These injuries are creating a “growing challenge to healthcare”.Should there be more rules and regulations imposed on these e-scooters, or should they simply be banned from Irish roads completely?Andrea is joined by Colin Baker from Back from the Future IT Support, Cian Ginty Editor of Irish Cycle, Dr Mick Molloy and listeners.
Irish doctors have called for regulations for e-scooters to be prioritized, saying they are causing a growing burden on our emergency care system.
