Hurricane Heritage has the incredible job of operating the world's only two-seat Hawker Hurricane, BE505 'Pegs'. Starting life as a Canadian Car and Foundry-built Mark XII with the RCAF serial AG287, the aircraft was converted and restored to a Mk.IIB 'Hurribomber' configuration in 2007. Just before the pandemic hit, her second conversation to a two-seat Hurricane was complete and now she operates flights all summer all over Europe with a truly unique experience. But when the Imperial War Museum unveiled their latest exhibition at IWM Duxford, Hurricane: Unsung Hero, the avgeek crowd, myself included, went 'unsung?! Never!'. So how better to discuss the exhibition with than the IWM'sHead of Technical Objects Rebecca Greenwood Harding. Rebecca has a broad remit at IWM, so I was delighted that we were able to spend a Friday with the Hurricanes to discuss making the event happen and also delve into the intricacies of managing the IWM's collection. Wing Commander Karun 'Jumbo' Majumdar is a legend of Indian Aviation. Joining the Indian Air Force in the 1930s, Jumbo would be the second Indian to command an active-duty squadron before his leadership and airmanship would be put to the test as the Second World War reached India. Neumím si představit, že bych s letadlem střílel, piloti museli cítit strach, říká Radim Vojta, který bude létat s legendární britskou stíhačkou Hawker Hurricane. Na světě je pouze patnáct létajících exemplářů. Jediné letadlo z druhé světové války, o kterém by přemýšlel, zda do něj sednout, je Messerschmitt Bf 109. Považuje ho za daleko náročnější a při přistání se prý stroj snaží pilota zabít.

First up we have the Professor telling us about how Tencent Games is planning to use police databases to restrict access to video games; which angers Buck due to breach of privacy issues and the reality that information will be flowing both ways. Professor is excited to see who is going to be the first criminal located by the police using video games to track him down. Ahhh, China, wanting to be the world’s number 1 in everything is now tackling the obstacle of behaving with extreme stupidity on an international level.This week the DJ brings us a story about the Deadwood tele-movie. Then the discussion delves into the range of movies and does Netflix and other streaming services spell the end of cinemas? Trust me, this is when you want to sit back with a cup of tea and watch the sparks fly. Best news is that apparently most of the original cast is back for this, including Ian McShane. Also some other movies in the works are Braking Bad, a new Super Mario movie (please, please, please don’t be a crappy as the last one) and also Steven Universe. So we will get to enjoy more from Dakota, check in on the crystal meth scene and hope the DJ stops doing weird accents.Buck brings us news of a real life working tractor beam that has been developed in Oz! A team working at the University of Adelaide has made science-fiction a reality for us, although on a reduced scale. But it is a start and now we have lasers and a tractor beam, now we need force fields and shields, please. Buck and the Professor geek out about the possibilities that this tractor beam represents for the future; which in reality is pretty darn sweet, right?Also we hope everyone who attended Supanova Brisabne had as much fun as we did. When Haifaa Al Mansour released Wadja in 2012 she became Saudi Arabia's first female director of a feature film. She has now directed her first English-language film - a biopic about Mary Shelley. Elsie MacGill was a woman of unusual capability and resilience. Born in Vancouver on March 27, 1905, she was the first woman to graduate with an electrical engineering degree from the University of Toronto, then the first woman to receive her masters in aeronautical engineering from the University of Michigan. Although she contracted polio the same year, the determined young engineer defied the odds and taught herself to walk with two metal canes. She went on to become the first woman to design and test aircraft. Though her disability prevented her from becoming a pilot, she insisted on being a passenger on all test flights to better understand the planes’ performance. During World War II, MacGill became chief engineer of the Hawker Hurricane, a fighter plane used during the Battle of Britain. In 1943, MacGill married William Soulsby, moved to Toronto and started her own consulting firm. Beyond work, MacGill became an author and actively supported women in business. Among her numerous honours were the Order of Canada, the 1967 centennial medal and the Amelia Earhart medal from the International Association of Women Pilots. She was also inducted into Canada’s Aviation Hall of Fame and the Canadian Science and Engineering Hall of Fame. She died in 1980 at the age of 75. Hawker’s Chief Experimental Test Pilot, Philip Lucas, gives insights into the problematic development of the Hawker Typhoon, together with his experiences of test flying the Hawker Hurricane and Tempest, and the pressures of developing aircraft in the heat of World War II. The interview took place in 1979 and was conducted by Rodney Giesler and was edited by Mike Stanberry FRAeS.

Next to the Hawker Hurricane is the Eagle Squadrons exhibit. In front is a glass case that contains information on another Ohio aviator. Piqua native Dominic “Don” Gentile learned to fly in high school. He tried to enlist in the Air Corps after graduation but was refused because he lacked the required two years of college. Desperate to fly, he turned to the Royal Air Force in England and by December 1941 became a pilot officer, flying with various Royal Air Force squadrons. He was assigned to combat in 1942 as a member of Number 133 Eagle Squadron and on August 1, 1942, during the Dieppe raid, he destroyed his first German planes, an Fw 190 and a Ju 88, within 10 minutes of each other. In September 1942, when the three Eagle Squadrons were transferred to the U.S. Army Air Forces, or AAF, as the 4th Fighter Group, Gentile was commissioned as a second lieutenant and began a remarkable combat career flying Spitfires, P-47s and P-51s. By April 1944, he was the Army Air Force’s leading ace with 27.8* enemy planes destroyed in the air and on the ground. Because of Lt. Gentile’s daring spirit, he was ordered back to the United States the following month as the risk he might be lost in battle was exceptionally high. Gentile agreed to take a one month rest from the rigors of combat with the understanding that he would be permitted to return to his unit. Instead, he was permanently assigned to Wright Field as a test pilot until after the war. In 1951 this great combat pilot who had survived all the enemy could muster against him was killed in the crash of a T-33 jet trainer near Andrews Air Force Base, Maryland. He was posthumously promoted to major. Several medals that were presented to him during his career as a fighter pilot are on display in this exhibit.

Born in Brazil, she was six when her father took her up in his plane on the day he got his pilot's licence. At the age of 13 she started gliding and moved on to power flying as a tug pilot. She is the first woman to fly a Hawker Hurricane since the female ferry pilots of the Air Transport Auxiliary who delivered the aircraft to squadrons in WW2. She's flying a North American Harvard and Beech Staggerwing at the Imperial War Museum Duxford's Autumn Air Show.Former football player and manager, Harry Redknapp is the current manager of Queen's Park Rangers. During his long career he also managed Tottenham Hotspur, Portsmouth (twice), Southampton, West Ham and Bournemouth. His autobiography, Always Managing - Harry: My Autobiography, is published by Ebury.Novelist Wilbur Smith was born in northern Rhodesia, now Zambia, in 1933. He trained as a chartered accountant before publishing his first book, When the Lion Feeds, in 1964. He has since written over 30 novels including his latest, Vicious Circle - a thriller set in Africa and the Middle East. He is planning to team up with co-authors on future books to increase his output and boost his American readership. Vicious Circle is published by Pan Macmillan.Alexander Armstrong is a comic actor and presenter and one half of the comedy duo Armstrong and Miller. He presents the quiz show Pointless alongside Richard Osman. Plastic Surgery does not always have a good press, more often associated with the excesses of Hollywood. But the birth of modern day reconstruction has far nobler roots. Dr Kevin Fong looks at the surprising, and heroic origins of the field of plastic and reconstructive surgery. It is a field that was born in response to the great air-battles of World War II, and the development of a new fighter plane - the Hawker Hurricane - that left its legacy not just in terms of success in the air, but in the devastating injuries caused to many of the airmen who flew them.
