Waged between German and British air forces during WW2

In this pivotal episode of the Battle of Britain series, we explore the mounting pressures faced by both British and German forces as September 1940 unfolds. While the RAF continues its desperate defense against daily Luftwaffe raids, behind the scenes both nations are dealing with critical resource challenges and strategic dilemmas. The British struggle with pilot shortages and factory production disruptions caused by constant air raid warnings, leading to new policies that increase worker risk but maintain essential aircraft production. Meanwhile, German intelligence faces a mathematical crisis as their estimates of British fighter strength prove wildly inaccurate, with the RAF continuing to field strong resistance despite German claims of destroying over 1,100 fighters. As Hitler's September 10th deadline for Operation Sea Lion approaches, the Luftwaffe shifts focus from airfields to London itself, culminating in the massive September 7th bombing raid that marks the beginning of the London Blitz - a devastating new phase that would see the city bombed for 57 consecutive days and nights, forever changing the character of the Battle of Britain. In Episode 229 of _The Battle of Britain_, listeners dive into the intense, attritional final phase of the aerial campaign as the Luftwaffe shifts focus to dismantle RAF Fighter Command's defenses with precision raids on key airfields. From the devastating bombing of Manston to the failed, costly attempt on Portsmouth, each raid reveals a clash of strategy and resilience—where German pilots claim massive victories but reality shows only half the damage. The episode uncovers how British squadrons fought back through clever tactics, early warning systems, and bold leadership, while highlighting the Luftwaffe's growing losses despite their relentless attacks. Amid shifting targets, tactical adjustments, and a battle of attrition, one truth emerges: the air war was turning—and the tide was clearly beginning to turn against Germany. This is history at its most gripping—where courage, technology, and sheer willpower determine the fate of nations. Don't miss this pivotal moment in the Battle of Britain. We're heading back to WW2 for the most pivotal battle of the European Theater. Some of you are already scoffing at that statement but let me lay it out like this. After Germany steamrolled mainland Europe, Great Britain was all that was left. Russia and Germany weren't at war yet. The United States was still over two years away from being at war. It was the British holding the line against total Nazi domination of Europe. If Britain fell that means no where to launch an invasion, no D-Day, no liberation of France. Between July 10 and October 30 of 1939, roughly 3000 pilots, most British and Scottish, but many others from all over including countries already occupied by the Nazis, held the skies above Britain and the English Channel preventing an invasion. For almost 4 months, fighter pilots, crews keeping them airborne, radar technicians, and the WAAF dispatchers, fought a fight for the rest of the world. In the words of Winston Churchill "Never was owed by so many, to so few" This is their story, This is the Battle of Britain. Support the show

An encore of Ted Barris on his book, Battle of Britain - Canadian Airmen in Their Finest Hour.
I'm going to make a quick confession to you here: The Battle of Britain is one of my three favorite parts of all of human history. The other two would be the Roman Empire at the time of Jesus, and then the American Declaration of Independence, the American Revolution, and the Constitution, all of that right as the US was being founded. And then this, the Battle of Britain. Why is this one one of my favorites periods? Well, it's got it all: a clear villain, a heroic underdog who fights valiantly, a moment when all seems lost, and then a sudden change of fortunes as the tide begins to turn. The battle of Helm's Deep, or the Battle of Minas Tirith - this has the same narrative arc. Plus, it has some of the most amazing airplanes that ever flew, which I will get to in a bit. The American war for Independence was cool, but they didn't have Spitfires or Messerschmitts. Neither did Minas Tirith. I guess Mordor did have the Nazgul on their flying lizards, but that's not quite the same. Anyway, this was one of those crucial turning points in history, where if it had gone differently, even by a small bit, our modern world would not be the same. It really was a pretty close shave. email: shortwalkthroughhistory@gmail.com

However, should the unthinkable happen, what has changed since the last battle, how might an Integrated Air and Missile Defence system help, and how could changing the way we think prepare us for such a conflict. In 1940, for 113 harrowing days, Nazi Germany's Luftwaffe unleashed relentless attacks on Great Britain, aiming to secure an early victory in World War II. The defence of southern England fell to the brave pilots of the Royal Air Force, joined in their hour of need by over 100 Canadian airmen. These men, hailing from all walks of life—some from prominent families, others fresh off the farm—served with distinction in 47 different Battle of Britain squadrons. In this episode, Ted Barris, author of Battle of Britain: Canadian Airmen in their Finest Hour, joins me to explore their incredible contributions during this pivotal chapter of the war. patreon.com/ww2podcast

A major if not the most important key to victory in World War 2 Europe was the Allied Bombing Campaign against Nazi Germany. World War 2 wasn't just a collections of campaigns fought in different theaters but also campaigns specific to the land, sea, and air. After WW1 introduced the concept of air power, the end of the conflict saw every country invest into this new frontier of war to varying degrees. Pre-WW2 saw most major powers developing bomber aircraft to extend their projection of power and hit the enemy far behind their lines, and fighter aircraft to shoot down the bombers. WW2 in Europe saw the first occurrences of terror and strategic bombing. Hundreds of planes dropping thousands of tons of explosive on cities in a single day attempting to destroy enemy resources and moral. To be a bomber pilot or crew you had to have smarts, skills, and frankly balls because you had a 50% chance of being killed when this was said and done. These men (some in their teens) in their Boeing Flying Fortresses and Avro Lancasters kept the allies in the war until it could be won on the ground. Almost a full 5 years before the allies set foot in France, the bomber aircrews of the British Bomber Command and soon after the U.S. Air Force flew missions over France and Germany to keep the pressure on the Nazis and prevent them from solidifying their hold. Flying miles above occupied Europe without fighters to protect them, the bomber crews of the allies were constantly under attack by enemy explosive shells (Flak) from the ground or the deadly Germany fighters strafing them at double their speed. Okay I'm rambling, sorry I love this shit and I hope you will too, hit play already.Prof Chris.Support the show

This is a story about quiet duty and humility, about the work of half of one's life and the British Plot in a part of Oklahoma that is Forever England. SUPPORT INDEPENDENT ARTIST! “This is how history went after McCoy changed it … Because ALL this lets them develop the A-bomb first. With the A-bomb & with their V2 rockets to carry them, Germany captured the world.” - Spock, from the Star Trek Episode, “The City on the Edge of Forever.”In this episode we look at one of the most common “What If?” questions in history: the plausibility of the Axis powers (specifically Germany) winning the Second World War. Also, probably the most complicated. Could Germany have been better off waiting to start the war? What if Hitler's strategic errors are removed from the equation? Was the Allied victory inevitable? While these and other questions at first glance to make such counterfactual assessments a rabbit hole way too deep, when the nature of the Second World War is examined closely and longstanding historical patterns in warfare are kept in mind, the reasoning for the Allied victory becomes clear and, consequently, potential paths the Axis powers could have taken for a different outcome.

In the summer of 1940, the skies over Britain filled with the sounds as of engines and gunfire, as the battle of Britain saw the RAF and Luftwaffe go head-to-head in a fight for air dominance. For the British pilots, the objective could not have been more critical – protect their nation from the threat of Nazi invasion. But were the British pilots really the plucky underdogs in this fight? And could Germany have launched an invasion if they had won the air battle over Britain? In the first episode of this five-part series on the greatest battles of WW2, Rachel Dinning explores those questions and more with military historian James Holland. James Holland is a military historian and the author of several books on the Second World War including The Battle of Britain: Five Months that Changed History. Today we're going to look at an important episode in history, when the survival of Western civilization was under threat. In the summer of 1940, Germany was preparing to invade Britain by attacking Britain's shipping capacity, pulverizing its coastal towns, crippling its Air Force, and demoralizing the British people. But the people of Britain would not be cowed. Led by Winston Churchill, they threw their hearts into the war effort and endured a punishing blitz on their capital city, London. And about a thousand of their young men flew in the Fighter Command of the Royal Air Force—and courageously, miraculously repelled the German Luftwaffe. We'll take some personal lessons from this inspiring history—about which Churchill said, “Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few.” Links The Former Prophets Malachi's Message to God's Church Today

By May of 1940 the German juggernaut has conquered most of western Europe and all that remains is the tiny island of Great Britain- its army having suffered an embarrassing loss and retreat at Dunkirk trying to defend France against its German occupiers. Now Germany wants to annihilate Britain using their powerful air force- the Luftwaffe- which they consider unbeatable. The outnumbered British Royal Air Force (RAF) bravely rises to the skies to defend their island home from invasion while the fate of the free world in Europe hangs in the balance.
