Edgar "Meshlee" Modesto of Buyepongo is the group's vocalist and also a percussionist who plays conga and guacharaca, a thin percussive instrument that's used in cumbia. The group's line-up is fluid, but at the center of it are Modesto and his brother Randy, who plays bass, as well as Jorge "Yuka" Valleo, who plays accordion, clarinet and guitar in addition to singing, and Angel Hernandez, who plays saxophone, clarinet and flute. The musical backgrounds of the members of Buyepongo run the gamut from punk to hip-hop to jazz to metal. The band itself began life as a cumbia outfit. After the second version of Buyepongo formed, they brought more nuggets from their collective knowledge of music into the mix.

***UPDATE: Egregious editing error discovered shortly after initial release. Fixed now. Recommend re-downloading*** Happy Friday everyone! New episode for you today. That's right. I'm back! Actually, I haven't been anywhere, except my house, for quite sometime. You can probably relate. If so, this is for you. It's been a minute. It was really good to take a break but I am offically back. This ain't a one off. Though, I will admit the cadence will from slower than before. Which brings me to an important announcement, I'm dusting off the old ActListMusic Instagram account. It's not really so much for posting. There will be a little but really it's for communicating. One of the main reasons the podcast release rate is down is that I just don't get the breadth of musical input I used. So I am opening another way to get suggestions/recommendations from y'all. If you want more podcasts, show more music! Spotify links and playlists are a particularly easy and efficient way to get tunes to me. But anyway, yeah, weird times. I hope everyone is doing okay. It's really incredible how this single unifying event is having so many different effects on everyones lives. We are all experiencing the same thing in so many different ways. Hopefully no matter what situation you're in, this brightens your day. It's the usual on tap today, with a lean to the Latin. Starts mellow and deep, electro cumbia styles. And then cranks up into the salsa and reggaeton realms. It's a great time and I'm excited to get it out to you. Also very happy to announce (and the timing was coincidental) that the ZZK Film Sonido Mestizo, which I played a very very small role in helping to produce, is finally available for public release! Happy 10 year anniversay!! Can you believe it?! Ten years ago today I published the first episode of the Active Listener Podcast (link). So interesting to listen back to the early episodes. It’s been quite the evolution to create the much more polished product I’ve got now, though I still think there are manifold ways it could improve. When this all started, I had a secret stretch goal of putting out 50 episodes. Being that I was in my 20s, a decade was just not really even in my zone of comprehension. Feels good to be here. 10s of thousands of downloads by fans across 40 plus countries. Pretty remarkable. So, what do we have here anyway? Well, What I have tried to do is provide a map of my musical mind. This mix both highlights my top three albums of all time and also takes selections from current favorites to build a picture of the landscape I’ve been painting over the last decade. For new listeners this is a great place to start. And for longtime fans it will bring back great memories. I have pointers to any number of old episodes so you all have plenty to keep you busy while I go on sabbatical. Yes, that’s right. More detail In the podcast but I’m going on break. I’m not saying I’m quitting but just think of it like your favorite band. They didn’t break up. They’re just not touring right now. I’d say you can probably expect a SXSW 2020 podcast. In fact, I’m considering going to SXSW next year. You want to go? Hit me up by email at Aaron @ ActiveListenerMusic.com. It’s always a wild four days. While I’m off, I left another set of breadcrumbs for you to follow to keep the music discovery going. As I think I mentioned, there were a whole bunch of songs featured on the podcast which are not on Spotify and hence are missing from the Spotify playlists for each episode (https://open.spotify.com/user/activelistener). Well, I went back through the podcast index, the 63 page pdf listing all 2000+ songs on the podcast, (http://www.activelistenerpodcast.com/p/podcast-index/) and highlighted in yellow all of the songs missing from the Spotify playlists. Check those out. Oh man, so many great tracks there. So many fantastic remixes that should not be missed. Check it out. Anyway, whether you’ve been here since day 1 or you’re just showing up to the party, I’m very appreciative. I’m so grateful for all of the people I’ve met and experiences I've had thanks to this podcast. Truly, thank you for listening! And don’t forget to support the artists. Mesh from the LA band Buyepongo comes on our show and talks about group dynamics. We discuss how beautiful it is to be part of something bigger than ourselves, the origins of BUYEPONGO, and what they ate on their latest trip to China. *Hint: They ate like KINGS! Check it out Diosas!
On this episode of WWAM, I interview the Director of Latino Communications Institute at Cal State University Fullerton, and my Tia-Abuela, Dr. Inez G. Perezchica. We talk about how she came to the United States from Tijuana in her late teenage years without really knowing English, and ended up getting a Masters at Harvard University. We also talk about the power of voting and how self-advocacy is equally as important as community advocacy and how keeping balance between the two is key in this political climate. In my conversation with Tia Inez, I learned that life doesn't have to be a straight path or the path that makes the most amount of sense in order to find happiness and success. Sometimes, you just have to be open, be willing to take on challenges, and seize opportunities others create for you in order to realize you are where you want to be. *Music by Buyepongo, Agua, Buyepongo EP album Listen to the full song here: buyepongo.bandcamp.com/album/buyepongo-ep
On our first episode of WWAM, I talk with Teresa Marie Sadlowski, a charge nurse of a hospital in LBC, about how teenage acne affected her adolescence…and more importantly how it didn’t. We also talk about how her experience in the high fashion industry led her to become an advocate for body positivity. But, I was most impacted by how addressing her depression, she was able to better cope with the death of a loved one, and find the support she needed to make the jump into the career she’s in now. The most admirable thing about "Tadow" is how she is able to self reflect and pause to tend to her needs. That doesn't make her selfish, in fact, it makes her a better caregiver, nurturer, and listener. If you are struggling with some very strong emotions, please pause for self love, listen to yourself, and reach out for help. 1-888-640-5174 Depression Hotline, 1-800-273-8255 Suicide Hotline *Music by Buyepongo, Por Tu Amor, Buyepongo EP album https://buyepongo.bandcamp.com/album/buyepongo-ep

And who better to shed light on the subject than El Güido, who does music writing, podcasting, radio work and has supported local acts as long as he can remember. This episode highlights the richness of soul, cumbia and psych coming out of the City of Angels so strap in for musica that is pachangosa as it is trippy! Greetings, So this one I had crafted to record live at a BBQ here in “sunny” Florida a few weeks ago, but that didn’t happen because a storm was passing by and people panicked, and then there were three of us, so it didn’t happen! Nevertheless, the word was out that it was going to be recorded and I was being asked about it so on a rainy day last weekend, I got her done. Continuing with the Latin flavors here... I cannot remember when the last Mojito was published but it has to be several years now. I had recorded a Brazilian affair a little while ago but don’t believe I published that, maybe I’ll put that up as a side distraction now that Rio is happening. Let me know what to do. I’ve had this building for a minute but as always, I have too many “buckets” going on and can never seem to settle on a concept. I had to force this out as the Afro/Latin rhythms seem to be coming at us left right and center so the track list kept changing. I must admit that the plan was to go hard in the middle, but that changed with some key new releases so I had to remove the Luciano and Michel Cleis that were taking the center stage/peak. You all know I love the drum, and I’ve really pushed it center stage here. As you might be able to imagine, blending such complex rhythms is difficult when both tracks come hard so I tried to focus on making the transition as interesting as possible without cluttering the sound. As you also know, I consider the transition/cross over to be a track in its own right so I particularly enjoy creating something in between that should be able to stand on its own. The cross-overs here are not too long but in some instances I was kind of forced to make them elaborate to allow the tracks to maintain their own identity and intent. I believe musicians construct their tracks deliberately so who am I to shortchange their sound eh? In some cases though, I was able to find a convenient loop half way through to chop. Anyway, onward, track list: 1. Christian Vinci – Son Sol 2. Pepe Citarella, Isidro Infante & Luisito Quintero– Celia y Tito 3. Hector Lavoe – Aguanile RMX 4. Manoo, Alex Finkin, Louie Vega & Jose Mangual Jr. – Soy Latino RMX 5. Pablo Fierro & Justin Imperiale – La Libertad RMX 6. Pablo Fierro – Herencia Latino 7. Southern Groove – Sufre y Vive 8. Novalima - Beto Kele RMX 9. Buyepongo – Maestros RMX 10. Southern Groove & FNX – Candela RMX 11. Myles Bigelow & Toto Berriel – Los Ojos RMX 12. Nicodemus & Sammy Ayala – Conmigo RMX 13. Christina Vinci – Habana Vieja 14. Pablo Fierro – Solos Tu y Yo RMX 15. Ezel & Tamara Wellons – Girl From Ipanema RMX REMIX CREDITS: Jose Marquez (3, 8, 9), Justin Imperiale (5, 14, 15), Hallex M (11, 12), Louie Vega (4), FNX (10). So there you have it, something that should have come out at the beginning of summer, will instead extend your summer vibe. Many thanks for stopping by and giving this a listen. Please take a second and let me know what you thought. And your thoughts for Belize please. We got hit hard. Blessed LOVE. K Favorite track: Southern Groove – Sufre y Vive Oh, and be warned, channel 2 was a little sticky and I had to mess with it a couple times, but decided to trod on.
