There was a time, a time not that long ago, when the Southern Cal football job was the coaching job in America. USC has the history, with 11 national championships, and a nationally recognized brand. It can recruit within a state that has a good talent base or recruit nationwide to its Los Angeles location. Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum is one of the most venerable stadiums in the country. But USC's mighty image has taken a hit in recent years, and the Trojans on Monday fired coach Clay Helton, launching a coaching search that will be one of the hot topics, from coast to coast, throughout the 2021 college football season. How does the USC job compare to SEC jobs?
The SEC & the Big 12 are making moves while the Pac 12 is on the rise. USC fires Clay Helton. Who will be the next Southern Cal head football coach? Week 1 of the NFL season is in the books. Rich recaps the improbable journey of 18-year-old Emma Raducanu who went from US Open qualifier to US Open champion. Rich wraps up the hour reflecting on the unexpected passing of comedian Norm MacDonald. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Jon “The Vernomatic" Verno catches up with John Gallagher of Raven and the two get down to the nitty gritty surrounded the 2020 release of "Metal City." Topics include the Behind The Scenes making of their new CD and how Max Norman, the legendary producer, assisted in the engineering of the release. John Gallagher gives insight on the unique chemistry that he shares with his brother Mark and new drummer Mike Heller. As tradition, John gives us his MT. RUSHMORE OF METAL - "Top 4 Bands he's toured with" and shares a not-so flattering METAL CONFESSION involving a known-wanker “GUITAR GOD." Metal Mayhem ROC show correspondent "Southern Cal" calls in from the beach of Melbourne Fla with a review of Metal City and a update on what the band has been up to for the last 20 years. About Raven: RAVEN is a rare thing in music, true originals – cut these guys with a razor and they will BLEED true heavy metal – a more intense live band does not exist on this planet! Hailing from Newcastle Upon Tyne in North East England back in 1974 (yes – 46 YEARS ago!!!) The Gallagher brothers cut their teeth playing the pubs & clubs until solidifying their line up in 1980 with drummer Rob Hunter. The trio went on to release three of the most influential metal albums of the NWOBHM (New Wave of British Heavy Metal) inspiring every band of that era and beyond. Basically, without Raven you just would not have thrash/speed metal…. after all, the band did give Metallica & Anthrax their first tours! Following a tumultuous move to the USA, deals with Atlantic Records, indentured servitude and commercialism, Rob left the band in 1987 to be replaced by drummer extraordinaire Joe Hasselvander, who had made his name in cult doom band Pentagram, Savoy Brown and his own solo projects, adding a new dimension to the band. In 2001, guitarist Mark Gallagher was involved in a near fatal accident – but fought his way back from the brink and the band proved they were stronger than ever! This renewed spirit and attitude was reflected in the title of their 2010 album “WALK THROUGH FIRE” and in the career overview DVD “ROCK UNTIL YOU DROP”. 2014 found the band opening for Metallica (the band that Raven took on their first tour back in 1983) in Sao Paulo in front of 70,000 fans, and completing their finest album to date – ExtermiNation” which was released to universal acclaim from fans & critics alike in 2015! After a serious heart attack in May 2017 Joe Hasselvander has had to unfortunately relinquish the drum stool….taking over drum duties is the phenomenal Mike Heller (Fear Factory, Malignancy) who has immediately injected high energy into the band! Following an insane blur of world touring over the last 3 years, the guys released another RAVEN opus, “Metal City” in September 2020 taking their game to the next level…a scorcher of immense proportions! In a cynical musical landscape these days, where bands are not “gangs “but faceless corporations, RAVEN is a band that is REAL not FAKE – and proud of it! Great talk with one of Thrash Metals true ROYALTY. The Power - Spotify Link Top of the Mountain - Spotify Raven - Website Raven - Facebook

You will hear people often debate what makes a legend, or the G.O.A.T. of a sport. Is it the record? Championships? Or is it how you respond to what life throws at you and how you turn that into the fuel to propel you? All of those incredible questions are a part of the life of the legendary wrestler and coach Dan Gable. As a wrestler, Dan compiled an unbelievable record of 181-1. He was undefeated in 64 prep matches and was 117-1 at Iowa State University. His only defeat came in the NCAA finals his senior year. Gable won a Gold Medal at the famed 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich, Germany, without surrendering a single point. The Soviets came to the Olympics with only one goal in mind: to defeat Gable. They were unsuccessful. In Gable’s final 21 Olympic qualification and Olympic matches, he scored 12 falls and outscored his nine other opponents, 130-1. During his six matches at the Munich Olympics, he went unscored upon. As the University of Iowa’s all-time winningest coach from 1976 to 1997, Gable won 15 NCAA National Wrestling Team Titles while compiling a career record of 355-21-5. He coached 152 All-Americans, 45 National Champions, 106 Big Ten Champions, and 12 Olympians, including four gold, one silver, and three bronze medalists. The Hawkeyes won 25 consecutive Big Ten championships, 21 under Gable as head coach and four while he was an assistant coach and administrator. He had a winning percentage of .932 and captured nine consecutive (1978–86) NCAA Championships. At the time, that equaled the longest streak of national titles won by any school in any sport and is one that is also held by Yale golf (1905–13) and Southern Cal track (1935–43). All of these statistics are not the most interesting thing about Dan, in my opinion. It’s truly the moments of loss and failure that propelled him to drive for and achieve the excellence the world uses to assess a career. Enjoy this episode with a truly great athlete, coach, and man.
