Today's Song of the Day is “Retome La Pluma” from Ana Tijoux's EP Serpiente de madera, out now.Ana Tijoux will be performing at The Cedar Cultural Center on Monday, April 21.
French-Chilean artist and activist Ana Tijoux recently shared her first new music since the mid-January release of her 2024 LP VIDA. Longtime fans of Tijoux’s trademark lyrical, sophisticated flow will find much to love in “Muévelo,” as she considers both the track and her forthcoming EP Serpiente de Madera to be a “return to her essence: beats, rhymes and turntable scratching.”

So...things are feeling more than a little fascist in the USA right now. Todo mal, pero no a falta de resistencia. This week we are re-running an episode from last year in which we talk about the global rise of fascism, historical context around the ebbs and flows of progress and backlash, and of course, the soundtrack of resistance. Whether it's the musicians who resisted the 1960's rise of right-wing dictators in Latin America as part of the Nueva Canción movement, artists who are making political resistance music today, or songs that might not be outright political at all, but help us see (and feel!) what a better future might look like—music is here to fuel us as we fight back. Featuring music by Mercedes Sosa, Ana Macho, Rafa Pabön, Ana Tijoux ft Shadia Mansour, La Santa Cecilia, Javiera Mena, Helado Negro, and Xenia Rubinos. With her first album in ten years, Vida, Chilean rapper and singer Ana Tijoux unleashes her indestructible spirit and social conviction on the project. A wise friend once told her something that has resonated — that the best revenge against death is life itself. “Vida is also a call to every single creator out there,” Tijoux says. “Singers, writers, sculptors, and performers, dancers, and painters – all of us. Our strength lies in sticking together. The only way to continue marching forward, preserve our sensitivity, and look fear in the eye is to rely on our collective identity.” A collection of 15 tracks, Vida is bejeweled by guest contributions from artists ile, Talib Kweli, and De La Soul's Plug 1. We gravitate towards the wry distortion of “Niñx.”

Israel's genocide on Gaza has led to at least 30,000 dead (including 12,000 children). This past week, we saw the Israelis begin bombing on Rafah and a ground invasion of the last refugee haven in Gaza is expected at any time. But while the Israelis wage their ethnic cleansing campaign with bombs and bullets, they've also weaponized environmental destruction to make sure that no one can return to a land and water poisoned by their war machine. We talk with Joshua Frank (@joshua_frank) about the weaponization of environmental destruction in Palestinian territories. We also talk about Michael Menesini of the San Francisco's District Attorney office anti-Arab emails to Counterpunch. Bio// Joshua Frank is an award-winning California-based journalist and co-editor of the political magazine CounterPunch. He is the editor and co-author of several books. Most recently, he is the author of the book "Atomic Days: The Untold Story of the Most Toxic Place in America" (Haymarket Books 2022). ------------------------------------- Outro-“Somos Sur” by Ana Tijoux (ft. In this week's Alt.Latino episode, Chilean rapper and singer Ana Tijoux talks to hosts Felix Contreras and Anamaria Sayre about her new album, Vida, and why it took so long to return to the studio.
Vocalist Ana Tijoux has been a frequent guest on Alt.Latino. That's because ever since her US debut, 1977, was released in 2010, Tijoux had been at the forefront of Latin music that celebrates creative innovation, themes of social justice and fierce independence. In this week's episode the Chilean musician talks to Felix Contreras and Anamaria Sayre about why that spirit of innovation has been more or less silent for the last 10 years, and how her new album, Vida, is not only a chance to catch up, but also a deeply moving look back. Audio for this episode of Alt.Latino was edited and mixed by Joaquin Cotler, with production support from Suraya Mohamed and Isabella Gomez Sarmiento. Chilean singer, rapper and songwriter Ana Tijoux is back with her first album release since 2014. It's called Vida, and despite touching lyrically on dark themes like climate change, poverty and death, the disco-inspired uptempo beats stand in defiance of that darkness. In the artist's words, "life is the best vengeance against death." Ana Tijoux joins us for an All Of It Listening Party for her new album, Vida.

Putting on a new record can feel like an instant sonic vacation for your mind - or maybe it's the best type of time travel? This week we take a trip to the teaming clubs of Bogotá and Cali Colombia (or shall we say, Colombia came to a movie studio conference room here in LA) to talk to multi-lingual lead singer Catalina García who for the last fourteen years has led adored jazzy roots-pop icons Monsieur Periné along with master instrumentalist Santiago Prieto. It's heady times for the band: their newest LP Bolero Apocalíptico was just crowned best alternative music album at the Latin Grammys and I was able to catch up with Catalina the night before her performance at Disney Hall with the LA Philharmonic and Gustavo Dudamel. While her infectious laugh and the band's often nostalgic and cheerful sounds may lean one way - listen closer and the new LP dives into some serious subjects that hit close to home for Catalina - like the desperation of climate change, government sponsored violence and poverty. Harnessing her love of cumbia, swing, bossa nova, and folk styles from across Latin American, Catalina sings in Spanish, French, Portuguese and English depending on the mood and with her work in Monsieur Periné, she's been able to collaborate with some of the brightest lights in Latin music such as Ana Tijoux, Vanesa Martin, Vicente Garcia and more. Take a listen to “Cumbia Valiante” featuring Tijoux which touches on the massive protests against corruption that she and her family have participated in in her native Colombia. While the world was shut down over the pandemic - an unexpected surprise happened for the band. An older jazzy song of theirs "Nuestra Canción” (a fan favorite) from their 2015 record Caja De Música somehow became a Tik-Tok sensation, rising to the top of the music chart and was then streamed over 150 million times. If you're in a bad mood? Put that one on ASAP. Indeed, the group rarely comes to California - but when asked about her favorite all time show - Garcia mentions playing at sunset at the Santa Monica pier many years before. Truly the amount of travel she and her bandmates have undertaken across three continents is staggering - and there are many more stories to come.
Four-time Grammy Award winner Antonio Sánchez joins Alex to talk about his latest release, Shift, and how he connected with the incredible list of musicians who contributed to the album. The two discuss Antonio's recent move to Spain, his approach to building drum parts, and where he got the inspiration to use the term “Bad Hombre”. Antonio Sanchez began playing the drums at age five and performed professionally in his early teens in Mexico's rock, jazz and latin scenes. Since moving to New York City in 1999, Antonio has become one of the most sought-after drummers in the international jazz scene. One of the most revered collaborators with guitarist/composer Pat Metheny, Antonio has also recorded and performed with many other most prominent artists like Chick Corea, Gary Burton, Michael Brecker, Charlie Haden and Toots Thielmans.
