I'm back in Chicago for Lollapalooza!!  This gigantic music festival took place August 1-4 right out my front door in Chicago's Grant Park.  I'm totally psyched to bring you loads of interviews with some of the music industry's biggest talents. This first part of the four-part series of in-person interviews kicks off with the wonderful and talented Goldie Boutilier. Goldie is no stranger to success and has had several career incarnations along the way, giving her a unique perspective — and she wants to share that knowledge and excitement with younger artists!! Goldie is a believer in the power of manifestation — and I'm all about that!Grant Perez, who performs under the name grentperez, began as a YouTube star as a kid… fast forward 5-6 years when Grant wins the 2024 ARIA award for Emerging Songwriter of the Year!! Grant's energy and enthusiasm is super infectious and his humble vibe is super refreshing. The National Parks has been following their bliss and using nature as a muse since they all first met in Provo, Utah over a decade ago. Their commitment to the outdoors is as evident in the music as it is in their chosen band name, and they have built a massive following with their Pop Folk/Americana vibe.To round out this Part 1 episode is LA-based Cale Tyson, whose Pop Folk vibe is infused with humor and authenticity. Leaving Nashville and the Traditional Country route behind, Cale set out for the Wild West of Los Angeles to carve out a new chapter in his multi-varied career. Cale is a chill dude with a great sense of humor — he's the perfect Roadcase guest!!

Molting and Slow Growth with Andrew Bird [REAIR]

'Tis the season for a repeat episode. I chose this interview with musician Andrew Bird from the archive because he always reminds me of the holidays. Before I play my 2019 conversation with Bird, I speak about how an episode he recorded in 2020 with Maron impacted me, including his perspective on ‘molting'. Despite the discomfort I felt revisiting something recorded nearly 4 years ago and judging my past self, what Bird shared with me in our conversation feels as relevant today as it did then.  We covered the slow growth he experienced coming up as a musician, discipline in building his career, and how his strict classical violin training required strict adherence to rules—rules he ended up breaking to create his own signature style. He's extremely prolific: since this interview was released, he's put out 4 additional albums, including his HARK! which I talk about in the introduction. In this interview, we focused on My Finest Work Yet, which had just come out. Like all his albums, it's filled with smart lyrics and mythology (which we talk about in this episode) as well as fresh melodies and probing themes. Recorded  in a crowded room at a music festival,  the sound is different than usual. And you might notice some odd jumps from topic to topic as we made the best of the audio we had. You'll hear us jump around from how he writes songs, to how he met his wife, how he spends his mornings, parents his son, and of course, how he began incorporating whistling. This week Cale Tyson returns. He's a musician originally from Texas, now living in LA. He walked over the other day and we caught up about what's happened since he was here last including his upcoming pop country album. We talk about his music trajectory from playing in emo bands in high school to beginning a music career in Nashville to touring as a classic country artist and now, making the shift to pop country. We also delve into our feelings around aging and entering what Richard Rohr calls, "the second half of life," bouncing between projects, attachment styles, dating, and learning to not take anything too seriously—especially yourself. Show Notes:- Find Cale on the Web | Instagram | Spotify | Book- Maddie's newsletter: Wait, Have You Read This? The specific Issue I read from: 06: Nice Guys- Listen to Cale's music and follow him on Spotify to find his new singles  - This episode is sponsored by The Narrative Method: learn more & sign up for a free writing or conversation Salon here!- Subscribe to our newsletter to get show notes + essays, etc. sent to your inbox- A few spots open in the Creative Clinic: more info here or email me (katie@letitouttt.com)- Check out the Let It Out Kits: self-study workshops for personal growth | sign up for the Talk Kit waitlist- Follow @letitouttt on Instagram. I'm @katiedaleboutIf you liked this episode, try out from the archive:Episode 418: Cale remembers his thoughts: musician Cale Tyson on rehab, recovery & our neighborhood feeling like high school...

I met them both for the first time when I went to Moby's house to record this a few months ago. We talked for hours about everything from the sunk cost fallacy to attachment and aversion. Cale Tyson is a musician originally from Texas, now living in my neighborhood in LA. He came by and we talked in my kitchen about our neighborhood feeling like high school, what he was like in high school, self-mythologizing an image, craving validation in projects (and beyond), and being allergic to earnestness…all before getting into his wild story of going to rehab, getting sober, and what got him to that point with his trademark combo of self-deprecation and earnest humor. His new book, "Some Memories Are Only Thoughts”, just came out. We talk about that too as well as writing, sharing our work, and cringing at the process of it all. He's a real gentle, sweet guy who makes me laugh and surprised me with a bunch of wisdom in this. And I surprised him with a few questions from his friends. Escuchar audio
