NEW PODCAST ALERT with Liza Lo! https://sistersinsong.callcast.coor wherever you get your podcasts! We talk with Liza Lo who grew up in Spain and Amsterdam and is now living in south London where she produced her first album “Familiar.” She had some great advice, “Just keep doing it—even if you feel like there's no point in doing it.” Drawing inspiration from the likes of Alice Phoebe Lou,Julia Jacklin, and The Staves, Liza Lo's sound meets an intersection where gentle folk-inspired instrumentation meets wistful indie-pop. Inspired by Liza's five-years living in South London, "Gipsy Hill" focusses on the feeling of slow separation from a place that feels like home. The forlorn tracks sees Liza's stirring vocal ruminate over the top of stripped back acoustic guitar and gentle string arrangements that swell into a poignant rush of melancholy. Speaking on the writing of the single, Liza says: "Throughout these 5 years I lost many of my close-knit relationships altered here, from true best friendship, to my parents marriage, to my own romantic love. It's a deeply sorrowful song that describes things from my childhood kitchen, to my best friend's porch and my insular communication after coping to learn withall this change. I hope this song finds some kind of connection with people, it's heartbreaking but I guess love is truly just everything in life and that's why it hits home. A song for the recently brokenhearted, a song for the people that have had to get to learn to live life differently when suddenly losing their best friend to brain injury, this is Gipsy Hill." Welcome to the Monday Breakfast show for Monday the 12th of August, 2024. On Monday of last week Homelessness Australia released its Child Homelessness Snapshot, illuminating the state of the growing crisis in this continent. To help us dissect the snapshot's results, Rob spoke with CEO of Homelessness Australia, Kate Colvin. New data released by the Productivity Commission reveals the rate of Indigenous children in out-of-home care in so-called Victoria rose from 102.2 children per 1,000 to 102.9 per 1,000 in the 12 months leading up to the end of the 2023 financial year. This represents 10 percent of Indigenous children in so-called Victoria and is nearly double the national average; Indigenous children in 'Victoria' are 22 times more likely to be in out-of-home care than non-Indigenous children. To learn more about the conditions creating this crisis as well as the Productivity Commission's findings, we heard from Yoorrook Justice Commission's Deputy Chair and Commissioner Sue-Ann Hunter. Listeners are encouraged to read the recommendations made by the Yoorrook Justice Commission and to make submissions (click here). On Friday the 9th of August the NSW Labor Party delayed hearing amendments to Equality legislation which would protect LGBTQI+ students in the state until October. The move came days before the bill was set to lapse after not being heard in Parliament. To find out more about the bill and its amendments, Rob interviewed Quay Quay of Pride in Protest, an activist collective who campaign for social justice in the Queer community and beyond. To keep up to date with what Pride in Protest is doing, follow their Instagram. On Tuesday the 6th of August around 60 asylum seekers launched a 24/7 protest outside incoming Immigration Minister Tony Burke's office in protest of the estimated 10,000 asylum seekers who are victims of the failed fast track system, which has left people stuck for up to 12 years as they wait on bridging or expired visas. To get an update on the protest, Rob spoke with Thamilselvan Selvakumar who is on the ground outside Tony Burke's office. Thamilselvan is a Sri Lankan Eelam Tamil Refugee who has been in limbo for 12 years on a bridging visa. Songs played: 'Tied Through Time' - Outright'Tend The Garden' - Gang of Youths 'Don't Let The Kids Win' - Julia Jacklin'We Have Survived' - No Fixed Address

In this engaging episode, we're joined by Evangeline, the talented voice behind Jenna Ortega's upcoming film, Winter Spring Summer or Fall. Evangeline shares her insights into the creative process, revealing the internal dialogue that drives her music. We discuss the profound impact of relatable lyrics and the gift of articulating emotions through songwriting. Reflecting on her journey as an independent artist, Evangeline opens up about her approach to music creation, emphasizing the importance of authenticity over commercial considerations. She candidly discusses the role of sync potential in her music and the evolving nature of her creative process, from solo songwriting sessions to collaborative efforts. Throughout our conversation, Evangeline's passion for creating music will resonate with many, offering a glimpse into her heartfelt approach to artistry. This episode is a promising musical journey filled with authenticity and introspection. Guest Bio: There's a sly wink to Evangeline's debut EP, Fuzzy, a bit of self-deprecation and sardonic humor that's baked right into the title. “I mean, Fuzzy sounds pretty stupid when you first hear it,” she explains. “But honestly, that word has always broken my heart. It actually means ‘distressed to the point of softness, difficult to perceive clearly or understand and explain precisely.' I really wanted these songs to sound carefree and for the instrumentation and production to be as warm as possible, but I wrote them over the last three years about emotions and relationships that weathered me, feelings I had difficulty explaining clearly in the moment, years that made me soft.” Recorded with producer Dillon Casey (Weyes Blood), Fuzzy is a raw, honest, and utterly addictive dose of alt-pop from a storyteller committed to baring it all in a search for clarity and purpose. The songs are dreamy and inviting, offering up shimmering sonic mirages that belie their true emotional depths, and the production is similarly complex and nuanced, layering analog and digital elements into disarmingly beautiful soundscapes that manage to feel both modern and timeless all at once. Add it all up and you've got a stunningly vulnerable, deceptively bright collection that's as witty as it is poignant, a remarkable debut that lands somewhere between Whitney and Julia Jacklin as it playfully explores heartbreak and healing and all the confusing contradictions that come with it. About the Hosts: We're Sonnet Simmons and John Clinebell, 2 indie artists who have found success and creative fulfillment through licensing our music for ads, TV shows and films. We were once so disheartened and discouraged that our music wasn't being noticed or valued through traditional methods. So we both started on a journey to find another way. For us, that “third door” was sync! And what we discovered is a lot better than we could have ever even imagined…[Find out more here] Resources From This Episode: 2Indie - Visit our website for more resources and information on how to get YOUR music signed Music Licensing Basecamp - Want to join our exclusive online sync community, with weekly LIVE networking and coaching calls? @2indieofficial - Follow us on Instagram Sync It! As broadcast October 9, 2023 with plenty of good vibes in tow for the festival hangover. Tonight, in our final edition of the Busking World Cup Special Series, we welcomed two very talented artists to the studio for a heavy dose of folk, classics, and just downright sunshine as one of the best ongoing events in Gwangju wraps its 2nd edition. First hour we welcomed Pompey native folk singer Sam Brothers to the show, who not only is the spitting image of David Bowie and Mick Jagger's long-rumored love child, but also took us on a journey of influences across a variety of eras and styles. For our final busking guests of the week, we welcomed Steph and Georgie Fisher, who are the Sydney-born Berlin-based duo that comprise Sissos. Much like their own places of connection in this world, they showcased some of their friends from both places, and talked about the duality of family and artistry in a fascinating and exceedingly funny interview to wrap the week properly.#feelthegravityBusking World Cup 2023 Special #62023.10.09Tracklist (st:rt) Part 1 with Sam Brothers (00:00)Sam Brothers – Still I'm Here, As AlwaysColter Wall – The Devil Wears A Suite and Tie (Original 16 Brewery Sessions)Sonny Terry – Key To The Highway (Live at Sugar Hill)Devendra Banhart – Now That I KnowVan Morrison – Star of the County DownJoanna Newsom – Easy Part 2 (37:56)Sam Brothers – Gwangju Busking World Cup App VideoBob Dylan – On More Cup of CoffeeJoni Mitchell – CaliforniaJeff Buckley – GracePlanxty – As I Roved Out Part 3 with Sissos (69:08)Sissos – You Can't Have BothJessie Monk – Gets Me DownStu Larsen – Lost in a HazeJoe Mungovan – Soaking Up The SunshineSonny Casey – A Thousand Setting SunsMichael Brinkworth – Good Old Feeling Part 4 (1:43:10)Sissos – Leave My Dreams for MeFirst Aid Kit – My Silver LiningLucas Laufen – WeatheringJulia Jacklin – ComfortJudy Blank – KaraokePaul Kelly – To Her Door

Burke Reid is a Canadian-Australian producer, who began his career as part of the seminal Australian alt-rock trio Gerling. After ten years in the band, and 4 critically and commercially successful albums, he left to pursue a career solely in production. His very first full length role, The Mess Hall's Devil's Elbow won the Australia Music Prize and set him off on a fascinating and varied career as one of alternative music's most interesting and in demand producers. Work with Courtney Barnett - whose album “Sometimes I sit and think, sometimes I just sit” also nabbed an AMP Award, DZ Deathrays, Flyte, Julia Jacklin and Sports Team have followed. He relocated to the UK just as the world went into lockdown back in 2020, but we were lucky to be able to speak with him in person at my studio, Hackney Road, and hear the story about how he went from cult rock star musician with Gerling, to cult rock music producer. The Process of Production is presented by Lawrence Diamond and Bob Matthews. Lawrence cut his teeth playing and writing in Indie bands before finding international success and touring the world with his band CITIZENS! During that time he worked with a host of revered producers including Liam Howe, Mark Ralph and Alex Kapranos. Since the band ended in 2016 he's been using that experience to help other artists develop their careers as a writer and producer while continuing to release his own music under various different guises. Bob learned his trade as the producer and multi-instrumentalist in Electronic Pop duo Alpines, whose career spans 3 albums, releases on major and indie record labels, shows with Florence + The Machine, The xx, Emeli Sandé, and a top 20 hit 'Tidal Wave' in collaboration with Sub Focus. In recent years he has turned his focus to producing other acts and has a studio in Chiswick in West London. How often have you heard of an artist being labelled “over-rated”? Did it strike you as fair, or just a subjective, lazy way to insult artists you don't like? Mick & Jeff look at the concept of ‘over-rated' as a way of describing artists, and consider whether certain artists ARE, in fact, over-rated, and, if so, why or why not? Our album you MUST Listen to Before You Die is “Bossanova” by the Pixies. We talk about where the Pixies fit into the music universe and where this album fits in their canon of work. Jeff provides a dip sample of some of the rock news so far this year, an update on what's happened to Princess Fionnula now that's she's gone back to Ireland, and some of the finer points of beer tasting! This Take 5 is something of a reunion. It's been six years since Julia Jacklin first joined me and picked the music. Since then, she's released two more brilliant albums, made a name for herself across the world, and shared her stories in every way. Julia has always had a knack for knocking us out with her incredibly personal songs. And in giving so much of her own experiences in her art, we've been witness to the many changes she's experienced as she's grown up. Change is a constant in all of our lives; it's the one thing we can be absolutely certain of. So for her Take 5 I asked Julia to pick five songs of change. And man, she embraced the theme, and then some. From Fiona Apple to Leonard Cohen to Love, this is a beautiful, honest, and enlightening conversation. You won't hear her music in the same way, again. On the show this time, it's the minimalist-no-rubbish storytelling of singer-songwriter Julia Jacklin. The Aussie songwriter Julia Jacklin composes thoughtful lyrics and spacious arrangements, which in combination with her fresh harmonic choices make for a rewarding listening experience. Her latest album Pre-Pleasure is named for the state we all exist in - the moment right before a mythical state - where we have arrived, we have done the work, and we can now live in the state of “pleasure.” Problem is - that kind of work is never done, so we remain in this state - pre-pleasure, in perpetuity. Julia Jacklin steht so fest für Liebeskummer, dass sie «Don't Know How To Keep Loving You» mit Heart Break Queen Lana Del Rey performte.

Julia Jacklin - "Lydia Wears A Cross" from the 2022 album Pre Pleasure on Polyvinyl. Four years after charming the socks off of us with her 2018 record Crushing, Julia Jacklin is finally releasing its anticipated follow-up. Titled Pre Pleasure, the record was conceived upon returning home at the end of a mammoth Crushing world tour and finished in a frantic few months of recording in Montreal. Our Song of the Day is the lead single and opening track off the record, “Lydia Wears a Cross.” Harkening back to her Catholic upbringing, a young Jacklin struggles with an understanding of what she's being fed while deeply enjoying the pageantry of the church. “I'd be a believer /If it was all just song and dance,” she sings on the chorus. In a statement, Jacklin describes the song like this: “The song is about a lot of things but mainly being a 7yr old Jesus Christ superstar fanatic attending catholic school trying to figure out which way is up. The music video was filmed by my constant collaborator and friend Nick Mckk at Splitpoint lighthouse. I played a show close by recently and asked on stage if anyone could let me film inside. Someone in the crowd knew a guy and that was it. The rest was filmed in the streets of Northcote, Melbourne.” Pre Pleasure was recorded in Montreal with co-producer Marcus Paquin (The Weather Station, The National) and finds Jacklin teamed with her Canada-based touring band, bassist Ben Whiteley and guitarist Will Kidman, both of Canadian folk outfit The Weather Station. It also introduces drummer Laurie Torres, saxophonist Adam Kinner and string arrangements by Owen Pallett (Arcade Fire) recorded by a full orchestra in Prague. Jacklin will be embarking on a US tour this August, with a date in Seattle on Friday, September 30th at the Crocodile. Watch her incredible KEXP in-studio performance from 2019 at the link below. We had the pleasure of interviewing Bestfriend over Zoom video!Canadian bedroom pop duo Bestfriend are back. After their wildly successful EP, places i've lived, the duo announce a sister EP, places i've left, and share the lead single "Someplace Else," a dreamy bedroom pop bop. Nostalgic, romantic, and sugary sweet, "Someplace Else" is all about crushing on someone, and frankly, "It might be the most purely happy song we have ever written, really," the band notes. Leading listeners into a dreamy soundscape of lush, atmospheric synths and layers upon layers of rich harmonies, Bestfriend's latest single is the perfect prologue to their forthcoming EP, due out this summer. Written and produced entirely by the duo and mixed by Grammy-nominated Travis Ference (Ariana Grande, Tori Kelly, Imagine Dragons), places i've left leaves us where their debut EP places i've lived left us: lovestruck, yearning, and filled with a sun-drenched, bittersweet nostalgia. Bestfriend's debut EP, places i've lived, came out last October, to reach critical acclaim from Under The Radar, Line of Best Fit, Earmilk, DIVA, and more. A love letter to all of the experiences and people from Bestfriend's young adult lives, places i've lived is heavily inspired by storytelling songwriters like Lorde, The National, Big Thief and Julia Jacklin, with production inspired by Bleachers, FINNEAS, The 1975, Rina Sawayama. Created remotely, with Stacy on the west coast and Kaelan in the east, Stacy would write songs, create rough demos and send them to Kaelan who would then produce it from there, passing it back and forth between each other to add/detract elements. Since its release, duo have been featured on Spotify's Lorem, Bedroom Pop, and my life is a movie playlists, amassing over 1,500,000 streams within the first 4 months of release. For more on the story behind the music, check out Bestfriend's exclusive interview with The Line of Best Fit and Luna Collective. We want to hear from you! Over the course of the last 25 years, Polyvinyl Record Co. has grown from an idea in the heads of two excitable music fans into one of the more versatile and artistically driven record labels of its kind, working with a roster of well over 100 artists and consistently pushing independent music in new directions. In commemoration of this landmark birthday, we've put together The Polyvinyl Podcast to chronologically tell the story of how Polyvinyl has evolved over the last quarter of a century. With our host Fred Thomas, along with Polyvinyl staffers Natalie Dávila, Andy De Santis, and Seth Hubbard, we sat down and talked to just some of the folks who have been part of Polyvinyl's enduring legacy, conducting dozens of interviews with artists such as American Football, Alvvays, Japandroids, Jeff Rosenstock, Julia Jacklin, Kero Kero Bonito, of Montreal, Laura Jane Grace, STRFKR, Xiu Xiu and many more. With each episode, we'll get deep into every era, moving from DIY beginnings to where the label is at today, and reflect on how Polyvinyl and their family of artists have navigated the ever-changing landscape of the music industry while holding on to core beliefs of positivity, kindness, and good music for all you good people.
