A thousand facets sits with Karen Cheung from Kerchung! They talked about her background in animation, how she found her voice through porcelain and how her work is a statement! About: Kerchung! is the brain child and brand of Karen Cheung - illustrator, animator, artist and all round angry woman. Her work centres around saying what you think, speaking the truth, supporting the less privileged and fighting the good fight against hatred. Mental health, reproductive rights, racial justice and women's rights are just some of the causes that Karen is passionate about and supports through her work. Each piece of Kerchung jewellery is carefully crafted by hand, infused with tongue-in-cheek humour and laced with a vicious edge. Porcelain clay is wrestled into shape, fired and sanded, decorated by the most patient hands, glazed and fired again. Those with 22k gold lustre detail are decorated and fired a third time, making each piece a labour of love and one of a kind. Slight imperfections are part of the charm of this collection, and reflect the handmade nature of our products. We also now offer a line of fine jewellery options in sterling silver and solid gold, as well as some fun gift items such as t-shirts and prints. Karen is assisted in everyday studio work and the making of the ceramic pieces by wonderful Chantal Rush, who herself is a ceramicist and all round super human being. What if the iconic blue-and-white pottery sitting on your grandmother's mantle was actually the key to an art history mystery? In this episode of *Now I've Heard Everything*, host Bill Thompson sits down with decorative art advisor, author, and former *Antiques Roadshow* expert Genevieve Wheeler Brown to discuss her new book, *Beyond Blue and White*. Genevieve shares the serendipitous story of stepping into a quiet New York City townhouse and discovering a rare cache of 17th- and 18th-century Dutch Delftware. What unfolded was an incredible "who-done-it" that revealed the hidden, powerful history of women in the arts and financial history. From female pottery owners who grew up down the street from Vermeer to the Gilded Age wives who bypassed sexist museum boards to found their own institutions, this episode explores how decorative arts served as a gateway to independence for women throughout history.Get your copy of Beyond Blue And White by Genevieve Wheeler BrownAs an Amazon Associate, Now I've Heard Everything may earn a commission from qualifying purchases.Chapters:01:16 – Porcelain vs. Earthenware: The 9th-Century Imitation Game 02:02 – From *Antiques Roadshow* to a New York City Mystery 03:41 – The Secret Women Entrepreneurs of the Dutch Golden Age 05:14 – Craft vs. Art: From Everyday Tables to Royal Commissions 07:03 – Financial Literacy and Equal Rights in the 17th Century 08:12 – The Golden Age of Archiving and Connecting the Dots 09:14 – Gilded Age Rebels: How Women Built Their Own Museums 10:48 – A 5-Year Writing Journey Born Out of a Zoom Lecture 14:00 – Getting Lost in the Smithsonian: Childhood Inspirations 16:38 – The Centennial Exposition of 1876 and the Women's Pavilion 18:11 – Ceramics as a Gateway to Women's Suffrage and Independence 20:02 – The Science of Cobalt Blue: Technology Thinner Than Porcelain 21:46 – Is There Valuable Delftware Hiding in Your Attic? 22:51 – Wrap-up & Where to Find *Beyond Blue and White*Guest InformationGenevieve Wheeler BrownWebsiteSocial:Facebook Instagram 1988 interview with Alex HaleyEasier, more confident everyday conversation: "The Everyday What To Say"For more intriguing and engaging interviews each week, subscribe now on:Spotify Apple Podcasts YouTube
Mitchell Kennedy discusses what fabricators need to know about cutting porcelain for the countertop.
Hello voices from the bench community, John Wilson here and I wanted to share some news about the evolution of the Programill lineup. Most importantly, Ivoclar's new PrograMill 7. What stands out right away is the reduced air consumption this mill requires, but what you'll notice first is that impressive new touchscreen. For us, the biggest advantage has been increased spindle power. Next time you see your Ivoclar representative, be sure to ask about the PrograMill 7 and tell them John Wilson sent you. Thank you. At exocad Insights in beautiful Mallorca, we finally caught up with Felix from Imagine USA—and the timing couldn't have been better. As an exocad dealer on the front lines of digital dentistry, Felix shared his excitement about the strong turnout, the familiar faces, and most importantly, the innovation coming from exocad. What stood out most? The new exocad Hub and its cloud-based capabilities, along with powerful AI-driven tools inside DentalDB designed for efficient batch processing. For Felix and the Imagine team, it's not just about seeing what's new—it's about putting it to the test. By running new features through their own production facility first, they ensure real-world performance before bringing solutions to their customers. Fresh off the beaches and lectures of the beautiful island of Mallorca at the exocad Insights 2026 , Elvis and Barb sat down with three incredible women proving that digital dentistry is global, creative, and fueled by passion. First up is Andreea Bordea, a ceramist and lab owner originally from Romania who found her way into dental technology after narrowly missing acceptance into dental school. From analog waxing and staining zirconia with a single A2 shade to opening her own lab in Spain and building a digital workflow around exocad, Andreea shares the journey of learning everything the hard way. She talks about teaching herself digital dentistry, building a team, and how social media unexpectedly became her outlet while working alone in her lab. The conversation also dives into Ivoclar materials, zirconia, and the excitement around new products launched at Insights. Then the microphones turn to Denisse Ramos from for one of the most energetic conversations of the event. Denisse talks about her journey from Enterprise Rent-A-Car and Coca-Cola into the dental industry, eventually becoming a major force in digital workflows, 3D printing, and equipment sales. From Dentsply to Desktop Health and now leading sales at New Stetic USA, Denisse shares stories about mentorship, industry evolution, women in dentistry, and why labs need to charge for their expertise. We all talk about the rise of digital dentistry, treatment planning frustrations, social media, the future of dentures, and the importance of giving back through organizations like Ladies of the Mill and the NADL. Finally, Elvis met Daniela Torres, better known online as “Danny Designer,” a digital designer from Chile whose Instagram portfolio turned into a thriving business. Daniela explains how she taught herself exocad through YouTube before traveling to Madrid for advanced training, eventually working at the MOD Institute in South Carolina before returning to Chile to build her own remote design business. From designing full arch restorations and dentures to handling dozens of cases a day entirely through email and WhatsApp, Daniela proves how powerful digital dentistry and social media have become for technicians worldwide. The conversation wraps with excitement around exocad's newest updates, the exocad Hub, and what it means to be recognized as an exocad Hero.Special Guests: Andreea Bordea, Daniela Torres, and Denisse Lasso Ramos.
The Haunted Porcelain Doll | Paranormal Podcast In this episode, we've got two listener submissions that both somehow involve grandmothers handing their family members something terrifying and then acting totally unbothered about it. The first, 16-year-old Lindsay staying alone with her grieving great-grandma, grabbing a fireplace poker after hearing phantom footsteps from a kitchen that should have been empty, and then walking into the living room to find a tall black cloaked figure with beady inhuman eyes sitting completely still in her late great-grandfather's chair. Then we got into Samantha's year-and-a-half ordeal with a Victorian porcelain doll her grandmother gave her for her birthday that started turning itself on the shelf, relocated from her bedroom to her bed while she was at school, gave her nightmares bad enough that she dreaded going to sleep, and eventually made a sound like porcelain scratching against the wall at 2am while she watched its head slowly turn toward her.

Cold Spring designer to exhibit at furniture fair Many interior designers understand lighting, but few know about electrical wiring, says Charles Burleigh, a Cold Spring resident who recently retired from the industry. Seeking to illuminate dollhouses as a child, he learned the basic engineering concepts from his father. Taking advantage of newfound free time, Burleigh developed a method for turning out flowing porcelain bowls that offered elaborate form and just enough function. Though he dabbled in other media, he always returned to the flowery bowls, figuring that their striking appearance could be put to a practical use. One night, an epiphany: "I figured I could turn them over or mount them on a wall as lamps." It was a simple concept that prompted many possibilities, including acceptance to the juried Launch Pad section for emerging designers at the International Contemporary Furniture Fair (ICFF) at the Javits Center in New York City, which debuted in 1989 to offer an alternative to the Salone del Mobile in Milan. Burleigh will man a 25-square-foot booth for three days at the prestigious annual trade show, which will be open to the public on Tuesday (May 19). "In the interior design world, OMG, you have to go," he says. Acanthus Ceiling Mount Acanthus Wall Mount Helianthus Table Lamp Helianthus Wall Mount Lisianthus Table Lamp Ranunculus Table Lamp Sabelica Pendants Standing in his Cold Spring studio across from Depot Square while constructing the booth, Burleigh contrasted his career and new pathway. "It's nice to have merit-based recognition," he says. "In my other gigs, it was always who you know." The goal is to get a gallery or showroom to represent his work. "I just want to make things and not deal with the business end," he says. Another eureka moment led him to the name, the Herbarium Collection, which is appropriate because the work appears to be organic. Green-glazed pieces resemble cabbage leaves. Others look like seashells or flowers. All are fragile. Some of his white-ish lamps, adorned inside with gold glaze, are ghost-like. The interplay between the glaze, the porcelain and the illumination makes each handcrafted work singular. "I started doing pinch-pots at the Garrison Art Center, little cups, and everything grew from that simple idea," Burleigh says of his textured collection. Raw porcelain consists of 10-pound clay-like chunks. Burleigh places the malleable material into a colander coated with a paper towel, then pinches and presses away, working the material into a translucent state. Deploying the latest LED technology, which uses the power equivalent of a nightlight but emits the brilliance of incandescence, he figured that for some pieces silvered bulbs — with tops coated in silver, gold and other colors to mute the glare — would spotlight the artistry and enhance the presentation. For now, he's sticking with the artisanal approach. "Some people come out of design school and present chairs at ICFF that can be easily replicated," he says. "My work is more involved because I'm showing one-of-a-kind pieces that could be roughly recreated. But if someone wants to mass-produce something based on the style, I'm all ears." ICFF will be open to the public at The Javits Center, 429 11th Ave. in New York City, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on May 19. Tickets are $250 ($35 students) at icff.com/fair/attend-register. Hey Voices from the Bench community! Jessica Love here, sending a shoutout from Utah! If you're passionate about creating natural, beautiful smiles—but want to simplify your workflow without sacrificing aesthetics—this is for you. I'm honored to be part of Ivoclar's development team introducing a powerful new stain and glaze system featuring Structure Paste, IPS e.max Ceram Art. Create stunning depth and lifelike color in as little as one firing. Let's continue to innovate, simplify, and create meaningful change—one smile at a time. CAM has been a major topic lately, and a lot of that conversation keeps coming back to hyperDENT. But instead of just talking about the software itself, it's worth looking at real-world experience. Imagine USA has been using hyperDENT in their own lab for over 15 years. That kind of longevity says a lot—they're not just selling and supporting it, they're relying on it in their own production every single day. That's what really sets them apart. This week's episode brings it full circle as Elvis reconnects with one of the podcast's very first guests, Renata Bundy, now a longtime professor at New York City College of Technology. Along with her are two technicians who represent both sides of the journey—lab owner Roberto Rossi and workflow master Eugene Vega—creating a conversation that dives deep into education, mentorship, and what it really takes to succeed in today's dental lab world. Roberto shares his unlikely path from working sanitation in New York to building a thriving lab, Synergy Dental Studio, over nearly three decades. With a relentless focus on quality, constant improvement, and embracing digital (while still questioning it), he explains how his lab has grown into a tight-knit, high-level operation. Eugene adds perspective from inside the lab, describing his evolution from student to managing daily workflow, highlighting how important environment, mentorship, and work ethic are when transitioning from school to real-world production. Renata ties it all together from the educational side, reflecting on over 20 years of teaching and how the program has evolved alongside the industry—from analog fundamentals to digital workflows—while still preparing students for the realities they'll face after graduation. The group doesn't shy away from the tough truths either: low starting pay, steep learning curves, and the high dropout rate among new technicians. But the message is clear—stick with it, find the right lab, and the opportunity is there. It's a conversation about growth, grit, and the importance of surrounding yourself with the right people—whether that's in the classroom or the lab. And if nothing else, you'll learn that a little Italian lunch might just be the secret to building a loyal team.Special Guests: Eugene Vega, Renata Budny, CDT, TE, and Roberto Rossi.

Most people see the finished plate. Very few understand everything that had to go right before it got there. Episode 192 pulls that curtain back. John Marino, President of RAK Porcelain USA, joins the show for a conversation rooted in experience — from operations and manufacturing to leading a growing organization built on long-term thinking and real partnerships. This isn't theory. It's pressure-tested. From solving problems at the ground level to reshaping how a company scales, John breaks down what it actually takes to build something that lasts in an industry that often prioritizes short-term wins. Alongside him is Chef Thomas Mandzik — bringing the operator's perspective from inside a system where consistency, standards, and execution are non-negotiable. He understands the weight of decisions. The cost of mistakes. And the difference between a partner and a vendor. Together, the conversation moves beyond product and into alignment — where chefs, brands, and leadership either connect… or miss entirely. Because when it works, it changes everything. In the Studio Chef Thomas delivered two dishes that reflect both precision and restraint — built with intention and executed at a high level. Fish Mosaic - An intricate composition of king oro salmon, bigeye tuna loin, and squid ink–brushed sea bream, wrapped in nori and set in a green apple yuzu vinaigrette with smoked olive oil. Clean, technical, and layered — a dish that demands control. Strawberry Pavlova - Strawberry panna cotta, strawberry balsamic gel, and basil gelato. Bright, balanced, and composed — where acidity, sweetness, and texture all hold their place. This is a look behind the scenes — not just at the food, but at the thinking, the systems, and the relationships that make it all possible.

Episode 186. What happens when one of Japan's most ancient art forms meets your favorite grab-and-go drink? This week on Sake Revolution, John and Tim crack open something truly special — a one cup sake housed in genuine Imari porcelain, the same fine ceramics that were traded to Europe as far back as the 1600s. The brewery behind it, Koimari Sake Brewery of Saga Prefecture, has crafted a series of five beautifully designed cups that double as collectible works of art. And when it comes time to actually taste what's inside, both hosts are caught completely off guard by a bold, bright acidity that nobody saw coming. Tune in for a tasting that's equal parts art history lesson, sake education, and pure delicious surprise. #SakeRevolutionSupport the show
In the heart of Rome's Jewish Ghetto, just opposite the Portico d'Ottavia and steps from the Teatro di Marcello, there is a staircase that leads down into history. That staircase belongs to Leone Limentani Rome, one of the oldest family-run shops in the city — founded in 1820 and still operated by the same family, now in its seventh generation. I first discovered Leone Limentani Rome decades ago when I lived on Via Giulia. I would walk along the Tiber and into the Ghetto, descend those stairs, and find myself in what felt like an Aladdin's cave of porcelain, crystal, and silver. Shelves stretched in every direction. Ginori plates. Limoges porcelain. Christofle cutlery. Baccarat crystal. Everything touchable. Everything real. And that tactile immediacy is still part of what makes Leone Limentani Rome so special today.
A 75 year-old man with severe aortic stenosis is deemed unsuitable for surgery on the basis of a porcelain aorta detected with cross-sectional imaging. The patient had, a decade earlier, been diagnosed with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy after presenting with cardiac arrhythmia. A dual chamber ICD was implanted at the time for secondary prevention and other comorbidities were managed. The patient is now being considered for staged alcohol septal ablation (for the HCM) and transcatheter aortic valve replacement (for the aortic stenosis), however, additional complications force an experimental two-in-one procedure.GuestProfessor Ross Roberts-Thomson FRACP (Central Adelaide Local Health Network; University of Adelaide)HostsAssociate Professor Stephen Bacchi FRACP (Northern Adelaide Local Health Network; University of Adelaide)Dr Alistair Leslie (Central Adelaide Local Health Network;)Key Reference (Spoiler Alert)* * * * *Two-in-one: Combined transcatheter therapy for hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and aortic stenosis [IHJ Cardiovascular Case Reports (CVCR). 2020] ProductionProduced by Stephen Bacchi and Mic Cavazzini DPhil. In this engaging Ask Away #23 episode of the Everyday Judaism podcast, Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe fields practical kosher questions emphasizing accessibility for all levels of observance. Key topics include acquiring utensils from non-Jews: new metal items require Tevilah (immersion in a mikvah) but not Kashering if unused, while repaired vessels over 3–5 ounces need re-Tevilah only if significantly renewed. Countertops like granite are easily Kashered with boiling water, but manufactured stones (e.g., quartz/quartzite) may pose absorption issues—consult a rabbi before purchase. Porcelain sinks can't be Kashered, favoring stainless steel; Formica Kashers via hot water pour-over or steaming iron. Grills reaching 600°F self-Kasher through Libun Gamur (full incineration), and oven self-clean cycles achieve the same.Callers explore nuances like rust (clean for health, not halacha), small vessels (exempt from re-Tevilah if repaired minimally), and non-kosher materials (wood, plastic, silicone can't be Kashered—dedicate new ones to meat/dairy/parve). Mikvahs are pristine via advanced filtration, with separate pools for women, men, and utensils to maintain sanctity. Sitting down with Jeff Hains has to be one of the biggest rewards I've gotten from being a podcaster. Not only is he well spoken, but we both share an affinity for drywall and we ask the question, Why? Like me, Jeff is an explorer and isn't afraid to wade into the deep end when it comes to trying new products. That was the case with Muddskip and why he's changed everything about his approach to the trade because of this product. He's now an ambassador for the company but he didn't start out as one. We both share an unquenchable thirst for mud and that becomes evident very quickly on this, the 152nd, episode of The Drywall Podcast. This episode was brought to you by Muddskip. When Marion pops up on Zoom with her curls blown out to smooth newscaster perfection, it's a hot topic and one that offers a perfect lead-in to the first poem up for discussion, “Your Hair Wants Cutting” by this episode's featured poet, Michael Montlack. The three poems we're considering take inspiration from the Mad Hatter character in Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. We discuss, Slushies, how much, if any, contextual framing is needed to guide the reader when poems refer to a character who resides in our collective imagination. We also talk about local and regional idioms, and for Kathy, how difficult they are to unlearn (shout out to Pittsburgh!). Marion accidentally bestows a new nickname on Jason. Dagne has an opinion about how speech is rendered within a poem: italics or quotation marks. She's team italics, Slushies, which are you? While thinking about the line in these poems; Marion refers to Jason's excellent essay on the history and theory of the line from his book Nothingism: Poetry at the End of Print Culture. Another poem in the batch has Marion recalling Jason's poem “Wester.” As always, thanks for listening! At the table: Dagne Forrest, Samantha Neugebauer, Jason Schneiderman, Kathleen Volk Miller, Marion Wrenn, and Lisa Zerkle Michael Montlack's third poetry collection COSMIC IDIOT will be published by Saturnalia. He is the editor the Lambda Finalist essay anthology My Diva: 65 Gay Men on the Women Who Inspire Them (University of Wisconsin Press). His work has appeared in Poetry Daily, Prairie Schooner, Cincinnati Review, Lit, Epoch, Alaska Quarterly Review, Phoebe and other magazines. In 2022, his poem won the Saints & Sinners Poetry Contest for LGBTQIA+ poets. He lives in NYC and teaches poetry at NYU and CUNY City College. https://www.facebook.com/michael.montlack https://www.instagram.com/michaelmontlack (website) https://www.michaelmontlack.com/ “Your Hair Wants Cutting” my grandmother would say, sitting there at her window, monitoring the restless crows. Her robe nearly as ancient as she. Since when are you concerned with fashion? I once dared to ask. I was seventeen, restless as those crows. I knew she wasn't talking about my curls. Plumage, she used to call it when I was a boy. Sit down, little peacock—your hair wants cutting. Even then I knew it was a cutting remark. Laden. Throwing cold kettle water on my fire. I reminded myself that she was a widow. And was glad that at least I would never cause a woman to suffer such grief. I reminded her how I donned a hat most days. She stared me up and down, her eyes like the ocean's green cold. Clever. Your kind seems to have a clever answer for everything … I swallowed the indictment. Why not make yourself useful, she said, putting down her tea cup, eyeing the trash on her tray. I was glad to oblige, happy to depart before she could notice the low waist of my trousers, let alone the height of my heels. Muchier Picture me on a grand terrace, tipping my hat. Crossing a bridge over the river of defeat— it's definitely a state of ascent. Being owed rather than owing. A blatant triumph against the conventional. A la Lord Byron. A monocle without glass, worn for style. It's an advance for a memoir about a life you haven't yet lived. Bound to be lost on some but admired by all. Likely absent during the lessons on common subjects: Algebra, Classic Literature, Biology. More devoted to the mastery of the quaintest arts: Porcelain, Calligraphy, Tapestry Weaving, Drag. As ephemeral and ethereal as a bubble. It's not something you adopt. It's something that abducts you. Enviers call it utter madness, but the muchiest of the muchier won't even fathom the phrase. Inheritance There wasn't much to leave—my sister, also suspiciously unwed, took the cottage and the wagon. But our mother had insisted that the tea set should be mine. “It's dainty and a bit chipped. Like you,” she chortled on her deathbed. I failed to see the humor but took it just the same. Knowing my sister would likely surrender it to the church, where the nuns might put it to good use but never appreciate its finery, as that would be vanity. I much rather hear my motley chums slurp from it as they sit steeped in my ridiculous riddles. I never admitted how I crafted them at night, alone in bed, in the quiet twilight, the hour I imagined reading bedtime stories to the children I never had. An apprentice son would've been nice, to hand down millinery techniques. Instead I had the ghost of one, there in my workshop, where imaginary fights erupted over whose turn it was to sweep up the felt or sharpen the scissors. Of course, I appeared mad, a much better impression to leave than the riddle of my bachelorhood. Sometimes I wanted to smash the porcelain cups, chuck them at that bloody caterpillar stinking up the forest with his opium. Why not? There was no one to inherit my pittance. No one to be trusted with my legacy… until the appearance of this girl, at once strange yet so familiar. I quite liked her. The way she held her own with me. If ever I had a daughter, I would have wanted her to be as brave as she. Defending the poor Knave of Hearts, accused of stealing the Queen's tarts. There in that courtroom, I almost lost my head but finally found a beneficiary.

Growing up in a small room with her siblings, bunk beds, and shelves full of porcelain dolls, this listener lived through a childhood filled with unexplained terror. From floating bedsheets and bruises from unseen forces to dolls that walked and moved on their own, the room they shared was anything but ordinary—it was horrifying. But one moment stands out: the day a My Size Barbie, stored on the left side of the closet, appeared on the right, staring straight at her. Now older, she still questions what haunted that room and why only their room seemed affected.
