POPULARITY
Around campfires North and South, many of the tunes played and sung during the Civil War were the work of a 35-year-old Pennsylvanian who was America's first full-time professional songwriter.By the time the war started, Stephen Collins Foster — who as a youth taught himself to play the clarinet, guitar, flute and the piano — had published more than 200 songs. His best ones — “Oh Susannah,” “Camptown Races,” “Old Folks at Home (Swanee River),” “My Old Kentucky Home,” “Jeanie with the Light Brown Hair,” “Hard Times Comes Again No More” — already were widely known throughout the country to amateur and professional musicians alike.About “Angelina Baker”This song, though, was not one of the famous ones. Foster wrote “Angelina Baker,” sometimes performed as “Angeline the Baker,” in 1850 for use by the theater world's Christy Minstrels troupe.Today folks know it primarily as an instrumental dance tunes performed by old-time and bluegrass bands, almost always with a lively fiddle leading the way. An early version was recorded for Victor in 1928 by Uncle Eck Dunford of Galax, Va. Meanwhile, West Virginia fiddler Franklin George called it "Angeline" and played it with Scottish overtones.Foster's original, though, was a bit slower and had lyrics that lamented the loss of a woman slave, sent away by her owner.Huntington-born music historian Ken Emerson — who in 1997 wrote a definitive biography called Doo-Dah!: Stephen Foster and the Rise of American Popular Culture — said that “Angelina Baker” entered the American consciousness during a period of great controversy between free and slave states. The Fugitive Slave Act of 1850 was among the hotly debated topics at the time of the song's composition, and, Emerson noted, Foster's lyrics obliquely acknowledge these controversies. (Angelina likes th' boys as far as she can see ‘em / She used to run old Massa round to ask him for to free ‘em…. Angelina Baker, Angelina Baker's gone / She left me here to weep a tear and beat on de old jawbone… )Our Take on the TuneThe Flood has always celebrated diversity. The guys often follow a folk blues with a swing tune or chase a 1950s jazz standard with some 1920s jug band stuff. And deep in The Flood's DNA are the fiddle tunes learned from Joe Dobbs and Doug Chaffin. This Civil War-era tune the band learned from fiddlin' Jack Nuckols, their newest band mate. From the Archives: How We Met AngelinaAs reported earlier, Dave Peyton and Charlie Bowen started 50 years ago trying to draw Nuckols into the band. On an April evening back in 1974, Peyton and Bowen trekked over to Jack and Susie's place in South Point, Ohio, for a jam session. It was during that session that they first heard “Angelina Baker.” Here from the fathomless Flood files is that specific archival moment. Click the button below to travel back 51 years and hear Jack on fiddle, Dave on Autoharp and Charlie on guitar:More Instrumentals? Finally, if all this has you wanting some more wordlessness in your Friday Floodery, tune in the Instrumentals channel in the free Radio Floodango music streaming service. There you'll have a randomized playlist of everything from folksy fiddle tunes to sultry jazz numbers without a lyric or vocal in sight! Click here to give a try. This is a public episode. Spend any time in the southern Appalachian Mountains and you are bound to cross paths with Galax urceolata. This wonderful little evergreen herb seems to be at home in a variety of habitats from forest streams to granite outcrops and everywhere in between. It is also culturally significant and even suffers from poaching in some areas. Despite its place in Appalachian ecology and history, Galax holds many mysteries, especially when it comes to its genome. Join me and Dr. Shelly Gaynor as we explore the polyploidy and evolution in Galax. SpaceTime Series 27 Episode 146*Supernova's Potential to End the Dark Matter SearchAstronomers are eagerly awaiting a nearby supernova that could finally solve the mystery of dark matter. A new study suggests that axions, hypothetical particles, could be discovered within seconds of a supernova's gamma-ray burst. The Fermi Gamma Ray Space Telescope might detect these gamma rays, offering insights into the mass of QCD axions. However, the rarity of such supernovae and the telescope's limited field of view pose challenges. Researchers are considering launching a fleet of gamma-ray telescopes, named GALAX, to ensure comprehensive coverage.*Magnetic Tornadoes at Jupiter's PolesA recent study reveals that Jupiter's poles are home to magnetic tornadoes that generate Earth-sized concentrations of hydrocarbon haze. These phenomena, visible only in ultraviolet light, are linked to the planet's strong magnetic fields. The findings, based on Hubble Space Telescope images, shed light on the unique atmospheric dynamics of Jupiter, contrasting with Earth's auroral processes.*Arrival of the World's Biggest Digital Camera at NASANASA's Goddard Space Flight Centre has received the Wide Field Instrument, the largest digital camera ever built, for the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope. This advanced camera will offer an unprecedented panoramic view of the universe, aiding in the study of dark energy, dark matter, and exoplanets. Scheduled for launch in 2027, Roman's capabilities will surpass those of current Space telescopes. The Science RobertA new study links prolonged sedentary behaviour with increased heart disease risk, even among active individuals. Research highlights the crucial ecological role of large sharks, threatened by overfishing and habitat loss. Palaeontologists use dinosaur faeces to trace the evolutionary rise of dinosaurs. Advances in lithium battery technology promise safer and longer-lasting power sources, potentially revolutionising energy storage.www.spacetimewithstuartgary.comwww.bitesz.com

My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Patti Frye Meredith, author of the book South of Heaven. Patti's debut novel came out late in life and for her, that's right on time. She could not be happier. She grew up in Galax, Virginia. Most of her stories are set in her beloved Blue Ridge Mountains, but South of Heaven takes place in the North Carolina Sandhills, in Carthage where her family's roots run deep. Please know that the Carthage in South of Heaven was born from long ago visits to see her grandmothers, a Carthage formed from hazy childhood memories that have become more imaginary than real. If you know the real Carthage, she apologizes for misplaced landmarks and fictitious churches. After living all over over the South—Virginia, Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Alabama, Louisiana—she and her husband, Lee, have settled back in Chapel Hill with their Springer Spaniel, Maggie. Nothing could be finer. In my book review, I stated South of Heaven is a contemporary family fiction that is filled to the brim with amazing characters, as well as a delightful and though-provoking storyline. In fact, if you have family - and we all do - you'll relate to miscommunications, slights, white lies, bold-faced lies, and reinventions of the past that often occur between those we love. Fern made a poor choice when she was barely accountable for such things and has lived with the consequences every single day since. Except for her son, her aunt, and one friend, she has kept to herself, hoping to somehow atone for her sins. Her sister, Leona, on the other hand, seems to have it all, moving beyond their rotten childhood. But what happens when truth - old and new - becomes headline news? I love this story because it is one of redemption and love. We all make mistakes. We all try to cover those mistakes up, usually with disastrous results. We all find a way to love family, despite it all. This is a wonderful novel, and I highly recommend it. When people in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Southwest Virginia and North Carolina are heard talking about an incredible set of horns they just spotted in a field, most would assume they had just seen an impressive whitetail deer. Last week was the 87th annual Old Time Fiddlers Convention in Galax, VA. I joined 80,000 folks from around the world to experience my first Galax, the nick name for the festival for long time convention goers. Players from around the world compete on the historic Felts Park stage for different prizes. I arrived Thursday for the inaugural ‘Stories and Strings' event in downtown Galax.Featured in this mini episode are The Jack Tale Players from Ferrum, VA. I spoke with Emily and Rachel Blankenship-Tucker, long time members of the troupe. The main events begin Friday night, the first evening for full band competitions in the Old Time and Bluegrass categories. The Loose Strings Band opened the evening with The National Anthem; I walked around until I happened upon Trish Fore, the bluegrass banjo librarian for the Twin Counties. She was practicing with her band, Trish and the Wildcats, for their particular event. If you'd like to learn more about the festival, head over to oldtimefiddlersconvention.com!I can't wait until next years Galax, come say hi if y'all see me there:)Appalachian Vibes Radio Show from WNCW is listener nominated, you can nominate an artist by emailing Amanda at appalachianvibes@gmail.com. BUY NOW! http://www.cornerofthegalaxy.com/SHOP - SUBSCRIBE TO OUR PODCAST: http://cornerofthegalaxy.com/subscribe/ - COG LA GALAXY DISCORD: https://discord.gg/drr9HFZY2P COG STUDIOS, Calif. -- The start of the road trip was rough. The LA Galaxy played a lackluster first 45 minutes that saw them gift the Columbus Crew a two-goal lead. While there was an adjustment at halftime, the Galax's offense remains their most significant issue. On today's show, hosts Josh Guesman and Eric Vieira discuss the Galaxy's loss to Columbus, the likelihood that they'll lose again in DC against DC United, and why no one but Vanney has any idea what his lineup for the Tuesday match against LAFC will be. Did a rotated lineup against the Crew cost the Galaxy? What needs to happen to start scoring goals? And who wasted their big chance to get some more playing minutes? We've got a crazy show. Even little Guesman makes an appearance because everyone needs a hug at this point!

This week Jeff, John, and Dave discuss Guardians vol. 3. After we make some jokes and talk about the Writer's Strike, we drink beer and try to keep it positive, having fun talking about movies! With writer/director James Gunn back and flying mostly solo, he gives the team the send-off we may want and deserve even if Marvel won't let him follow through on. Rocket Raccoon gets his backstory, Peter Quill shares the spotlight after all the stuff from 1 and 2, Mantis and Drax continue their awesome chemistry from the Holiday Special, Kevin Bacon doesn't get a single mention, Gamora and Nebula are still doing their thing, Adam Warlock and his… foster mom?… make a comedic appearance after drinking some of that Russel Crowe wine from Thor: Love & Thunder, and the villain does a great job as the 12th Marvel villain who wants to fix the world, not just destroy it (the writer of this didn't read the comics). Happy Valentines Day! C. David Gelly is a mystery suspense novelist hailing from the small town of Fancy Gap, VA where he draws inspiration from the tiny hollows and interesting folk that live in the gap roads off I77."For travelers along the Blue Ridge Parkway at Fancy Gap, the fog often hangs like an azure dreamscape over the rolling green hills. But when a madman abducts two children and disappears into the wisps with the young brother and sister, the landscape becomes a nightmare for the children's parents and local residents. The county sheriff remains under intense pressure to track down the predator, yet all leads come up cold and the officers are sickened when a horrific act at the Devil's Den challenges them all to act quickly. To solve the crime before the Labor Day Flea Market and Gun Show, sleuths Quinn McSpain and Louisa Hawke are drawn into the mystery and head into the hills and hollows of the southwestern Virginia mountains."-Amazon.comLearn more about the author and find Fancy Gap series here:https://www.amazon.com/Fancy-Gap-C-David-Gelly-ebook/dp/B008GWEXX4?ref_=ast_author_dphttps://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00T6TPAR4?notRedirectToSDP=1&ref_=dbs_mng_calw_1&storeType=ebookshttps://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B06XJ7CXL3?notRedirectToSDP=1&ref_=dbs_mng_calw_2&storeType=ebookshttps://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07NC4CRYJ?notRedirectToSDP=1&ref_=dbs_mng_calw_3&storeType=ebooksThank you to my guest this week, and a special thanks to Palmyra the band for the intro and outro music. Kandace Newman (AKA Emerald Pine Originals) is a painter, a wood burner and a single mom with an incredible story to share. In 2020 Kandace found herself in the middle of a break up with a brand new baby, at the start of what will forever be remembered as The year of 'Rona.Up until 2020, Kandace served as an EMT in her rural community of Galax, VA. With a new baby, a pandemic and the tumult of a breakup, Kandace found herself in the same play many of us did at that time, in the darkness of a mental health storm. In an effort to clear her head and begin to heal, she started hiking. During one of her hiking trips, as she reached the mountains' summit, she was suddenly struck with an image of the scene that sprawled before her: Appalachia's beauty painted in surreal Lisa frank-ish hues. She got an overwhelming feeling that she needed to paint the view she was looking at. She snapped a reference photo and quickly went home to paint the image she saw in her mind. From there Kandace's art took off, and now (January of 2023) she is a full time artist allowing her inner voice to lead her. She doesn't know where the path will bring her, but she's trusting the process and listening to her intuition and leaning on God to fulfill her purpose. The Loose Strings Band is an all women bluegrass quartet from Galax, VA. Comprised of Lindsey Nale (mandolin), Channing Combs (guitar), Grace Davis (bass) and Ashley Hultman (banjo). A few weeks ago I drove in a torrential down pour through mountainous curvy roads in my very well loved black Jeep Patriot to make it on time for the 11 o'clock service at Hillsville Church of the Brethren.
