For many of us who grew up in the the 90s, Julia Stiles was an integral part of our coming of age. Her portrayal of the clever, acerbic Kat in 10 Things I Hate About You was a radical reinvention of the blonde teenage female rom-com lead. Her roles in Save The Last Dance and Mona Lisa Smile spoke to our adolescent feminist awakenings and catapulted Stiles to stardom. And, just like the heroines she played, Stiles chose to do things a bit differently. At the height of her teenage fame, she went to study English at Columbia University, continuing to act throughout her degree, most notably in the first of four Jason Bourne films. Her latest project is her directorial debut - the feature film, Wish You Were Here, which Stiles also produced and co-wrote. As a mother of three, Stiles said that her parenting informed her ability to direct. Show Notes Episodes 482: Save the Last Dance For Me This week host Dave Bledsoe was criminal trespassed from Arbor Terrace Teaneck for slow grinding with Mrs. Maria Santamarino during the retirement village's Valentine's Dance. (Maria was into it!) On the show this week we remember the “fun” of high school dances in the 80's, so grab your ruffles, soak yourself in Aquanet and let's get ready to slow dance to Bon Jovi! Along the way we discover that Dave was asked out on a date by a girl, once.(We don't believe it either) Then we dive right into a quick history of “Prom” before we hit the dance floor. We cover all the big dances, Homecoming (Football prom), the Snow Ball (a euphemism Dave keeps trying to make a thing), Sade Hawkins (nerd prom) and finally Senior Prom. (Wedding practice) Relive the memories with a tick-tock countdown the Best Night Of Your Life ™. (Or, if you are like Dave, and never went to prom tell you what all the cool kids did that night.) Our Sponsor this week is The King of the Prom, who wonders if he can interest you in some life insurance. We open with a disastrous prom date and close with Selina Joycee who would like to make a reservation on your dance card. We're stepping and sliding back in 2001 for Episode 84: Save The Last Dance. We bring back a previous guest of the pod, Roomie to help us get into Juilliard. No chair was used during this the review, minus the ones we sat in but a lot were thrown, along with multiple shots. We made sure to hold a lot of these characters accountability for their behavior, if this movie could be made today, and took a trip down memory lane sharing some of our High School experiences. This episode does off the rails but will have you asking, Was It Good Though??
...before we were so rudely interrupted... This is a song that I'm long-overdue in covering, if only because of the backstory it has. It's simultaneously heart-warming and heart-breaking. It's a love letter from lyricist Doc Pomus to his wife. That's not unusual, of course. Many songwriters compose songs dedicated to a loved one. But this one has an extra special twist to it. I shan't spoil it here, though: you'll have to actually listen to the show. So in this episode we'll learn about the genius of Doc Pomus, the genius of Dick Clark, and a little bit about children's television. Click here to support the show as a Patron. Then, we discuss the movie's place within the lineage of late-90s films, how it adheres to the rebellious sensibilities of the era, and (notably) the ways it disregards them. Finally, we talk about a recent article in The Washington Post which, coincidentally, references the film in its examination of the current proliferation of celebrity veneers, unattainable standards of beauty, and how these trends desecrate the authenticity and natural beauty that once defined the genuine sexual energy in media from decades past. Read 'Have you noticed that everyone's teeth are a little too perfect?' by Jessica M. Goldstein at The Washington Post.....Our theme song is "Mirror" by Chris Fish.
Pittsburgh-based R&B singer-songwriter Landon Thomas stops by to talk about his latest project, an album called “R U Still Mad At Me?” In addition, we chat about his love for Black women, his creative process, and why he has so much disdain for the 2001 movie “Save The Last Dance.” At the 47:08 mark, Landon pays tribute to his friend and fellow musician Mike “Tomlinese” Tomlin who lost his life to gun violence earlier this year.

Fresh off the heals of guest judging on Canada's Drag Race, Hollywood Jade is here to channel the divine, honey! You may know him from Canada's Drag Race and 1 Queen 5 Queers but Hollywood Jade's stint in entertainment started way before that in movies like Save The Last Dance 2 and Hairspray and collaborating with artists like Snoop Dog and Rihanna. If you follow Hollywood on social media you know he is also very open about his spirituality. In this episode, we take a deep dive into what it means to be spiritual, queer, ambitious, and successful. The Superficial Spirit is a podcast that explores how pop culture affects our spiritual experiences and seeks to uncover unconventional ways people experience the divine…Every episode explores a different area of spirituality including tarot, crystals, psychics, manifesting, plant medicine and modern new-age trends. In the podcast, we ask questions like is modern spirituality a cult? Is Ayahuasca really that profound? Are psychics and tarot even real? What about fame, money, sex and social media? How do they affect our spirituality? Can the superficial really be profound? Ultimately, we believe in one thing: spirituality is real but the tools we use to define it may not be magical at all.The Superficial Spirit is hosted by Peter Breeze, a former club kid and underground pop star who found success in queer clubs across Canada and America. He believes that his time as a fame-obsessed, hard-partying club-kid was a conduit for his spirituality and is passionate to connect with people who've also had unconventional or scandalous experiences exploring their own spirituality. Peter shamelessly explores the spiritual power of celebrities like Britney Spears, Courtney Love, Paris Hilton and The Real Housewives.Guests include RuPaul's Drag Race Superstars, Reality TV stars, Scientists, witches, psychics, tarot readers, naturopathic doctors and regular people who've been affected by modern Spirituality. This is a public episode. If you would like to discuss this with other subscribers or get access to bonus episodes, visit superficialspirit.substack.com

It's time for another movie review episode and this week is about the love of dance. Justin travels to 1984 England to trade his boxing gloves for ballet shoes with his review of Billy Elliot (8:32). Then we move to the present with our reviews of Black Adam (47:16) and My Policeman (50:29). As always, we end with our SOTW (55:54).

“It ain't ova, b*tch.” But Donny's career in podcasting is, as he will ultimately be cancelled for his accent work and acting choices during this “Save the Last Dance” recap with Kendrick Tucker of “Reality and Comics Too” podcast. The dark (in more ways than one) opening makes Chelsea realize why she left sleepovers early, and her passion for Julia Stiles' pullout couch makes Donny realize he doesn't want to sleepover at her house anymore. Then, Chelsea reminisces about her time at the Thirsty Turtle while Donny reminisces about his time in the special gym class. Also, the Cuties send in their best stories of times they put their foot in their mouth. But mostly, the three just praise Bianca Lawson and Kerry Washington for an hour. Host and producer Leah Green is in the garbage vault this week with 2000's dance classic Save the Last Dance, a movie that has since become famous for having... sort of shitty dances? We talk about music video culture, Step Up, and the ensemble cast of Save the Last Dance that made it a covertly revolutionary movie. We also discuss whether "problematic" discourse has finally run its course, Kerry Washington's magnetic performance and whether we actually want Twitter movies.Leah Green is a content producer at The Guardian and the host of Death Land.
