Richard Foos: Rhino Records & Shout! Factory on the Reissue Culture and Rediscovering Creativity

Unlocking Your World of Creativity

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 27, 2026 24:29

On Your World of Creativity, we travel around the world talking with creative practitioners, entrepreneurs, artists, and innovators about how they get inspired, organize ideas, and turn imagination into impact.Today's guest didn't just build a successful business—he helped create an entirely new category within the entertainment industry.Richard Foos was the co-founder of Rhino Records and most recently of Shout! Factory, two companies that transformed the way music, television, and film archives are valued, distributed, and monetized. What began as a passion for out-of-print records became a movement that helped define today's streaming culture, vinyl resurgence, and the growing importance of content libraries.Richard's WebsiteRichard's Facebook pageWe'll explore creativity, entrepreneurship, cultural preservation, and what happens when you discover opportunity hiding in plain sight.Guest BioRichard Foos is the co-founder of Rhino Records, one of the most influential reissue labels in music history, and later Shout! Factory, a pioneering company focused on television and film distribution.Beginning with a small record store on Santa Monica Boulevard, Richard and his partner Harold Bronson built Rhino into a globally respected brand known for preserving, restoring, and reintroducing forgotten and out-of-print music to new generations of listeners. The success of Rhino helped establish what many now call reissue culture—a model that transformed entertainment economics by demonstrating the long-term value of existing catalogs. Rhino was eventually acquired by Time Warner and became the catalog development and marketing division of Warner Music Group.Richard later co-founded Shout! Factory, bringing similar innovation to television and film archives. Today he continues advising the entertainment industry while focusing on social impact through organizations including The Narrative Method, Volunteer Collective, Cedars Sinai, and other nonprofit initiatives. His career sits at the intersection of creativity, commerce, culture, memory, and preservation.1: Seeing Opportunity Where Others Saw ObsolescenceRichard, one of the themes we explore on this podcast is creative vision—the ability to see possibilities that others overlook.Back in the 1970s, most of the entertainment industry was focused almost exclusively on the next release, the next hit, the next trend. What led you to recognize value in out-of-print recordings and forgotten catalogs when much of the industry considered them yesterday's news? Was there a specific artist, album, or moment that convinced you this could become a business? How much of that insight came from being a fan versus being an entrepreneur?2: The Soul of the Rhino BrandLooking back at Rhino Records and now Shout! Factory:What was your focus? What work were you really doing beyond selling records and media?Who were you serving? What gave you credibility? What industry assumptions were you challenging? And what larger mission connected all of it?3: Reissue Culture Changed EverythingToday we take streaming libraries, catalog recommendations, and rediscovered classics for granted. But Rhino helped create the blueprint. How did the process of licensing, restoring, packaging, and reintroducing older content evolve into what has now become one of the dominant business models in entertainment? What resistance did you encounter from record labels and rights holders in the early days? When did you realize the model was bigger than a niche collector audience?4: What Audiences Teach Us About CreativityOne of the fascinating aspects of your career is that you've spent decades observing how audiences reconnect with older creative work. What patterns have you seen in how people rediscover music, television, and film from previous generations? And what does that tell us about human creativity, nostalgia, storytelling, and cultural memory?5: The Future of Creativity, Archives, and Cultural LegacyToday, entertainment companies increasingly view their catalogs as some of their most valuable assets.Streaming platforms are built on libraries. Vinyl sales continue to grow. Legacy content often outperforms new releases. What does this shift tell us about the future of creativity and content consumption? And what advice would you give today's creators about building work that remains valuable decades from now?If you enjoyed today's conversation, please subscribe, rate, and review the podcast.

Buddies! I'm back with another interview on Vinyl Community Podcasts, this time speaking with Richard Foos—the influential founder behind Rhino Entertainment and co-founder of Shout! Studios. Sometimes referred to as the "Godfather of Modern Reissues", the work from Richard's companies has been instrumental in the current "golden age" of vinyl, and have inspired reissue labels we know and love like Light in the Attic (LITA), Sundazed Music, and the folks in Salina, KS at Analogue Productions.  In this reflective interview, Foos shares the incredible journey from opening the original Rhino Records store in Westwood, Los Angeles in 1973 to building one of the most influential reissue labels in music history. From preserving lost music and comedy albums to pioneering deluxe box sets, archival releases, and collector culture, Richard Foos helped shape how generations of music fans experience physical media. With Rhino, he set a standard for quality and bonus essays, lost tracks, features, etc. that music fans have enjoyed for decades.  Topics include: The origins of his connection to music The early days of Rhino Records, the record store Building the reissue label and store through a couple "happy accidents" Legendary Rhino projects involving The Monkees, Ramones, James Brown and MORE! What goes into curating a reissue choice? from licensing to consumer desire to personal preferences Launching Shout! Factory and expanding into film and television preservation Why curation, community, and storytelling still matter What does he think of the "vinyl resurgence" of the past two decades? Moving away from the boardroom and into philanthropic projects like The Narrative Method and Volunteer Collective Did Dave Grohl "license" his name to when naming the Foo Fighters?   This conversation is essential listening for vinyl collectors, music historians, physical media enthusiasts, and anyone fascinated by the business and culture behind record collecting.   Often imitated, never duplicated, please join us for another fine interview courtesy of Vinyl Community Podcasts!

One of the events they offer is called the library dinner, which can happen at a library, in a public space or at someone's home.    “Everyone meets at this space and goes away for one hour and learns something, anything,” therapist Foos, MA/MFT/MS, explains. “[Then] everyone has a lovely dinner and goes around and shares what they've learned; it's a fascinating experience of just exchanging what seems to be impromptu knowledge and information.”    Foos, a former punk rock musician, radio and TV writer, comedian, university professor and co-founder of IKAR-LA, adds, “It's really fun, and it's a great way for people to get to know each other on a whole other level."     “I love what meals do,” she says. “Enjoying [food and conversations] with other people… is such a thrill.”   Foos talks about her connection to cooking and food, as well as the Library Dinner experience and how to curate your own. She also shares the recipe for Cinnamon Surprise Cake, which her son and his cousin created in 2001; they were six and seven at the time. Our conversation also delves into the celebration of her new book and exploring her writing process. With a background in theater, Katie has long been an advocate for helping women shift negative self-talk patterns, a theme central to her book. This week I spoke with iconic musician Moby, who has recently ventured into podcasting with "MOBY POD" alongside sustainability expert Lindsay Hicks. I met them both for the first time when I went to Moby's house to record this a few months ago. We talked for hours about everything from the sunk cost fallacy to attachment and aversion. He's candid about getting sober and his experience with fame and how that has impacted his perspective. A thread that runs through this conversation is perspective, nostalgia, and storytelling as well as attachment, connection, and self-awareness. In today's episode of the In the Lead Show, I have a conversation with Shari Foos, founder of the Narrative Method. We're all susceptible to a certain amount of influence that can negatively shift our self-perspective and our perspective of dissimilar cultures and people both near and far. Whether those influences come from our own community, popular culture, or artificial intelligence online, there's little we can do to avoid it. Shari's passion and mission with The Narrative Method is to help peel away participants' false assumptions and beliefs to help them refocus their perspectives and understanding. Through the modality of storytelling and a practice called “relational mindfulness,” participants are able to develop radical empathy, compassion, and understanding for those around them. Take your dominant hand and put it firmly on your heart so that you feel your heartbeat. That hand is kind of the most grown up and that part of you is telling your fears, your worries, it's cool, don't worry. But from the inside, you feel that pressure and you can relax. Because it is a way to signal to your unconscious. The way you know your mom or your dad or someone who loved you may have loved would say, it's okay. You don't have to worry and it can calm you down really fast.

As a sought-after expert on the subjects of relationships and meaningful connections, Shari's writing and commentary have appeared in a range of online and print publications.  In this episode, Shari talks about The Narrative Method and how it's helping leaders today embrace our differences through sharing our stories.  Jump right into this powerful interview, and let's explore how to embrace diversity.  On this episode: Shari gives her background and how connection is, ultimately, what brings meaning to our lives.  Shari talks about networking and going from a "what you can do for me" mentality to understanding the importance and power of relationships.  What is the Narrative Method? Shari talks about her programs that connect people by sharing their lives' stories and how this level of vulnerability is impacting leaders today. Shari talks about the power of humor and how it can break negative thought loops that block us from moving forward. Take a bigger perspective of your mistakes and the mistakes of others.  It's time for things to become more human, open-minded, and more genius than ever before. If we could only embrace our differences, we could see innovation exponentially. There is a cultural shift people are going through to find meaning and purpose in their work. Shari breaks down how you can begin to find your purpose and what happens when you embrace new ideologies and methodologies.  Key Takeaways: Connection brings meaning to our lives  Networking is tapping into the power of relationships Sharing your story is a way to upgrade and reboot Being authentic is the gateway to building love Everyone has some level of empathy; we can inspire each other Embrace diversity of ideology to dream up a better future Tweetable Quotes: "We've all been programmed to think that it's not really safe to be who you are… You're restricting your ideas and your creativity. Those things do take a risk, and that risk is tied up in your vulnerability, and your vulnerability is tied up in your defenses." - Shari Foos "Every time you tie the not on tiny hanging pieces from old stories, there's a part of you that's got more clarity, and you have more space to do new things." - Shari Foos "I hope that more people embrace diversity… and thinking, not just how we can use the tools that we have, but dreaming about a better future, and creating tools based on those dreams." - Shari Foos Connect with Shari on https://www.linkedin.com/in/shari-foos-7b083214/ (LinkedIn), https://www.instagram.com/thenarrativemethod/?hl=en (Instagram), and https://twitter.com/narrativemethod?lang=en (Twitter).  SHARI FOOS, celebrated therapist and founder of THE NARRATIVE METHOD,a non-profit that connects diverse populations to themselves and each other through personal storytelling and other connective experiences. Learn how leaders can foster productivity and a sense of community by encouraging the development of meaningful human connections and more empathy in their workplaces. As a leader, driving productivity is only half the battle these days. As more and more employees prioritize working for companies whose values and missions align with their own, employers who make a concerted effort to develop a sense of community among their staff have never been in higher demand. Workplaces that emphasize building empathy and creating community have higher retention rates, healthier employees, fewer HR issues, and most importantly, fulfilled and motivated employees. Shari's passion and mission with The Narrative Method is to help peel away people's false assumptions and beliefs to help them refocus their perspectives and understanding. Through the modality of storytelling and a practice called “relational mindfulness,” participants are able to develop radical empathy, compassion, and understanding for those around them, which in turn creates meaningful human connections among dissimilar groups and encourages camaraderie. Shari's info below:  https://www.thenarrativemethod.org/sharifoos

Find out what happens when we mix Executive Presence with Relational Mindfulness! Our guest: Shari Foos Shari Foos is a Marriage and Family Therapist, adjunct professor, writer and improvisational artist. After twenty years of private practice, she wanted to address the growing isolation and need for real connection in an increasingly technological world. While one-on-one therapy and counseling offer profound help, only groups can provide the sense of empowerment and belonging within a family or community. So in 2013, she founded The Narrative Method, a 501C3 with the mission to create group programs in which participants could see themselves in each other's stories, increasing empathy and mutual understanding. The effectiveness of hundreds of transformative workshops with at-risk populations including veterans, youth and disenfranchised women, was proven in a study by California State Northridge. “It's a profound thing to offer an apology. An apology is not dependent on forgiveness and has no excuses. An apology is me humbly coming to you and saying, “Oh, I see that I've hurt you; that I was inappropriate in some way.” And by the way, I may not have intended to hurt you. I may not even agree that it was something for which you should feel hurt. But that's not the concern of the apology. The apology is merely recognizing that you feel hurt based on something I did or said. I want to own own your pain, and apologize for it” - Shari Foos  To kick things off this year, we have with us Shari Foos, Marriage and Family Therapist and founder of The Narrative Method.  Shari's point of view on inclusion was honed while studying Narrative Medicine at Columbia University. The program was conceived as a way to teach empathy to doctors. “There was a huge perspective about social justice, and what does it mean for someone to speak for a patient and you can extrapolate that to what does it mean for anyone to tell someone else's story. And so I have always been a big fan of the group process since I was a teenager, when I was depressed and found myself in group therapy. And what was so powerful that and I see to this day is that as important as one-on-one relationships are, they cannot simulate a good family the way a group can. And when everyone is nodding, because they understand what you're saying, you feel normal, you feel good, you feel you belong. So that's why I decided to take all of the work I had done, and create a group process where people could have meaningful conversations, without small talk, based on inspirational art, or videos or music or something that evokes a prompt, and then they'll go into smaller groups and discuss those prompts. Or in the case of writing groups, they write about them.” - Shari Foos  Here's some of what Susan and Rohini discuss with Shari “We're natural storytellers, based on the professional lines that we have chosen (as marketers and PR leaders), but our ‘why' came from a personal and painful experience and the urge to make sure that doesn't happen to somebody else, or the urge, perhaps for somebody else to learn from the hard soul searching work that we had done”  - Rohini Mukherji 3:53   “What Shari said about that “squeaky wheel” kid usually being the creative kid stood out for me. I have a 10 year old daughter and she's definitely curious and challenging. She's very, very creative. I say often, well you're lucky, you're in the right place to be that squeaky wheel. I'm listening closely because I want to encourage that creativity. Because for me, the environment was much more “Don't ask too many questions. Be seen and not heard.” The person who's telling a story is being brave. How do we make make them more comfortable?” -Susan Diaz  8:03  For that and more on empathy, apologies, creating safe spaces. In the spur of the moment, a simple argument can go out of hand if we focus on proving that we are right rather than seeking to understand our partner's emotional needs. We basically just listen so we can rebut. Whilst it does seem to be clever, it is not the same as understanding. So, what can we do to change that? She is a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and her writing and commentary have appeared in a range of online and print publications, including Real Simple, Huffington Post, Women's Health, Fatherly, Thrive Global, The LA Weekly, and Bustle. Shari created The Narrative Method because she wanted to bring people from all backgrounds together to explore who they really are, separate from the things they had been told and had internalized about themselves. She wanted them to have the opportunity to connect through their stories so they could recognize themselves in each other and discover similarities over differences and new perspectives over the fear of the unknown. In today's episode, we talk about the power of sharing your narrative, the vulnerability, and the connection it generates with people…Let's get into today's episode. Shari Foos is a Marriage and Family Therapist and the founder of  The Narrative Method. She and I have a vulnerable and lively discussion about our shared experiences as therapists, children with trauma, storytellers, and humorists. Shari's work is fascinating and in complete alignment with my philosophy and passions. This was a thrill for me to connect with another human on such a deep level.  In this episode, you will learn about the power of a story from a new perspective. Shari first explains the difference between Narrative Therapy, Narrative Method, and Narrative Medicine, all of which are steeped in the values of storytelling, empathy, and inclusion.  We then talked about our traumatic upbringings and how we used humor to heal and how we now lead with vulnerability to connect with others. As humans, we have a desire to be known. If we mask or armor up and never show our authentic selves, we can not be fully known or loved, and we will thus feel alone. Share your pain and joys. Share your shame and laughter. Explore "Wonderland", the place inside of you where imagination lives, where you celebrate your most creative and truest self and then SHARE it with the world.   TO FIND OUT MORE ABOUT SHARI, VISIT HERE:https://www.thenarrativemethod.org/https://www.facebook.com/thenarrativemethodsharifoos@thenarrativemethod.orgBOOK YOUR FREE COACHING CALL WITH PASHA HERE:https://calendly.com/pashamarlowe/30minPASHA LOVES FEEDBACK AND THE CHANCE TO MEET HER LISTENERS: pasha@pashamarlowe.comTO LEARN MORE OR TO HAVE PASHA GUEST ON YOUR PODCAST, VISIT HERE:https://pashamarlowe.com/Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/pashamarlowe)
