The Money Wise guys kicked off the weekend by diving into Wall Street's numbers for the past week. The Dow fell 1,118 points (2.5%), the S&P 500 slid 102 points (1.7%), and the NASDAQ dropped 503 points (2.5%), even though year-to-date gains remain modestly positive—with the Dow at 2.1%, the S&P 500 at 2.2%, and the NASDAQ at 1.1%. The market also experienced a notable "Friday attack," with more sellers than buyers pushing the S&P 500 right to its 50-day moving average, a level that has framed a trading range since early December between roughly 5,775 and 6,100 points. The conversation then shifted to the cacophony of mixed signals driving market volatility. Amid escalating political noise and heated debates—ranging from conflicting messages on Federal Reserve policy to the media's relentless focus on tariffs and negative news—the team noted how such sentiment can amplify market jitters. Issues like United Healthcare's billing challenges, which affect nearly 10% of the Dow, only added to the uncertainty. The overarching takeaway? With a tug-of-war of opinions and a media environment steeped in negativity, investors should brace for continued volatility and keep a cool head in the face of fluctuating market signals. A Cacophony of Mixed Signals Amid the ongoing market gyrations, investors are bombarded with a cacophony of mixed signals that intensify volatility. One moment, promising year-to-date numbers and hints of potential Fed rate cuts suggest a stable outlook; the next, media narratives filled with political discord, tariff warnings, and healthcare stock debacles send shockwaves through the market. This constant barrage of conflicting information makes it increasingly challenging for investors to discern reliable indicators, fueling rapid shifts in sentiment and creating an environment where even minor news can trigger outsized reactions. In the second hour, the Money Wise guys divulge what Wall Street Won't Tell You. You don't want to miss the details! Trigger Warning: This episode was recorded on November 6th, so the opening bit is a lot of feelings about the US Presidential election. Today on the Hot Jazz Network Podcast, Dave Lopez and George Cole announced an important benefit/fundraiser for the Jason Becker Creative Care Project. Jason Becker's story, if you haven't heard it, is one you'll never forget—a tale of brilliance, talent, determination, adversity, and ultimate triumph. A child prodigy on guitar, Jason rose to prominence as a teenager when he was one half of the legendary rock guitar duo Cacophony (with his great friend Marty Friedman). After wowing audiences worldwide with his amazing guitar skills and deep compositions, Jason auditioned for—and secured—the coveted position with David Lee Roth, following in the footsteps of Eddie Van Halen and Steve Vai. He wrote and recorded the DLR album "A Little Ain't Enough" and was poised to take over the rock guitar world when a nagging pain in his leg was diagnosed as ALS, or Lou Gehrig's Disease, a debilitating and fatal condition with a life expectancy of approximately five years.Jason did indeed lose the ability to play guitar, walk, talk, and breathe on his own. However, he never lost his will to live or his desire to create music. Communicating through a series of eye movements with a system developed by his father, Jason spells out words as well as musical notes and chords. He imparts his musical vision to his team, who then input the notes into a computer, edit the parts to his exacting standards, and generate charts for session musicians. Through this remarkable process, Jason composes his profoundly beautiful music, rich in melody and counterpoint, brimming with emotion. His inspiring music and life story have been the subject of countless news articles, magazine cover stories, and an award-winning documentary, "Jason Becker: Not Dead Yet."Not only is Jason still alive, but he's busier and more prolific than ever. His release, "Triumphant Hearts," showcases his gift for melody and deep knowledge of classical composition and orchestral arrangement. The album features Jason's signature, amazing guitar playing (recorded in the '80s and '90s) as well as performances by a who's-who of guitar virtuosos, including Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Neal Schon, Steve Morse, Paul Gilbert, Joe Bonamassa, and many others.Jason Becker isn't just an extraordinary musician; he's also one of the most positive, upbeat, and inspiring individuals alive. "I really feel lucky," says Jason. "I am surrounded by loving people, and I can still make music."DAVE LOPEZ Born in Chile, David Lopez's musical journey began when his brother introduced him to the world of guitar, rock, and Latin music. Growing up in Richmond, CA, Dave developed a passion for the diverse sounds of hip hop and heavy metal. Learning from the legendary musician and composer Jason Becker, Dave further honed his skills and later worked in studio management at the renowned Jackson St. Studios and Sound Wave Studios with artists ranging from 2Pac to Metallica. In 2003, he formed Flipsyde and toured worldwide with acts such as Snoop Dogg, Black Eyed Peas, and Busta Rhymes. Flipsyde's success included platinum and gold records, such as their 2005 debut album, "We the People" (Interscope). Their song "Someday" was chosen as a theme song by NBC for the 2006 Winter Olympic Games and appeared on the soundtrack for the 2008 film "Never Back Down."Jason Becker Creative Care Project Launch Party Fundraiser Saturday, Nov. 9, 2024, 2:00 PM to 6:30 PM Baltic Kiss, 135 Park Place, Point Richmond, CA 510-260-0571 https://www.baltickiss.com/ https://jasonbecker.com/

We're getting candid in our interview with Paris Paloma. Paris Paloma is an English artist who made a name for herself with her 2023 song “Labour.”  The song became a rallying cry for women, through its journal-like lyricism and dark folk-pop melodies detailing the women's emotional labour under a patriarchal society.  Now, Paris Paloma's debut album Cacophony is out August 30.  Through the 15-track album, Paris explores the human experiences of grief, love, patriarchy, and trauma through the imagers of Greek mythology, fantasy, and the literary gothic.  We talk to Paris about how her love of creative writing and fine art led to her unique way of storytelling, why she celebrates and explores the idea of womanhood as a rebellion to the norms of society we've all been raised in, and how her music has become a wildfire for women across the world to explore conversations of feminism and find community with each other. The Justice Insiders: Giving Outsiders an Insider Perspective on Government

Host Gregg N. Sofer welcomes Husch Blackwell partner Christina Moore to the show to unpack recent remarks made by Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco concerning a new Department of Justice whistleblower program. Monaco described a “90-day sprint” to stand up the new program, which purports to enhance DOJ's corporate enforcement efforts by offering financial incentives to individuals who come forward with information about violations of federal law.Gregg and Christina discuss the peculiarities of the program as it is understood presently, including questions regarding the anonymity of whistleblowers, the complications of multiple competing whistleblower programs, and the complexities of handling information in parallel proceedings.Gregg and Christina also explore the practical matter of how the newly proposed program should be addressed by corporate compliance professionals and the importance of properly staffing and resourcing such programs so that employees utilize in-house channels to surface potential instances of wrongdoing. Gregg N. Sofer BiographyFull BiographyGregg counsels businesses and individuals in connection with a range of criminal, civil and regulatory matters, including government investigations, internal investigations, litigation, export control, sanctions, and regulatory compliance. Prior to entering private practice, Gregg served as the United States Attorney for the Western District of Texas—one of the largest and busiest United States Attorney's Offices in the country—where he supervised more than 300 employees handling a diverse caseload, including matters involving complex white-collar crime, government contract fraud, national security, cyber-crimes, public corruption, money laundering, export violations, trade secrets, tax, large-scale drug and human trafficking, immigration, child exploitation and violent crime.Christina Moore BiographyFull BiographyA St. Louis-based partner on Husch Blackwell's Healthcare and White Collar, Internal Investigations & Compliance teams, Christina represents clients in a wide variety of healthcare litigation and compliance matters, including insurance questions, reimbursement disputes, regulatory matters, and Department of Justice investigations. Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for March 13, 2024 is: cacophony • ka-KAH-fuh-nee • noun A cacophony is a mixture of loud and usually harsh unpleasant sounds. Cacophony can also refer to an incongruous or chaotic mixture. // The sounds of shouting added to the cacophony on the streets. // A cacophony of aromas wafted through the air. See the entry > Examples: "In recent years, an array of findings have also revealed an expansive nonhuman soundscape, including: turtles that produce and respond to sounds to coordinate the timing of their birth from inside their eggs; coral larvae that can hear the sounds of healthy reefs; and plants that can detect the sound of running water and the munching of insect predators. Researchers have found intention and meaning in this cacophony, such as the purposeful use of different sounds to convey information." — Sonia Shah, The New York Times, 20 Sept. 2023 Did you know? If you're hooked on phonetics, you may know that the Greek word phōnḗ has made a great deal of noise in English. Cacophony comes from a joining of phōnḗ ("sound" or "voice") with the Greek prefix kak- (from kakos, meaning "bad"), so it essentially means "bad sound." Other phat phōnḗ descendants include symphony, a word that indicates harmony or agreement in sound; polyphony, referring to a style of musical composition in which two or more independent melodies are juxtaposed in harmony; and euphony, a word for a pleasing or sweet sound. Kakos is responsible for far fewer English words, but one notable descendent is kakistocracy, meaning "government by the worst people," which, we'll be honest, doesn't sound great.

“Throbbing, pulsating pain.” “Like a drill boring into your head.” “As though your head is gripped by a vise.” “Stabbing pain hammering through your brain.” There is no shortage of metaphors used to describe the horrific, incapacitating pain of migraines. But try as we might, can any of them truly convey what it feels like to be at the mercy of such pain? In many ways, migraines reveal our shortcomings: with language that fails to accurately describe pain, with empathy when we continue to dismiss migraines as “just really bad headaches”, with medicine as we struggle to find reliable treatments and preventatives, and with biology as we fail to understand the complete pathology of this condition. In this episode, we do our best to explore these shortcomings by deep diving into what we do know about the biology and history of migraines. Why do some people get migraines and others don't? How do certain medications work? What the heck is going on with aura? Have migraines always been around? How have people dealt with them or perceived them historically? What's on the horizon for migraines in the future? As always, we've got lots of questions and lots of answers for you, so tune in today!See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
